Central Girls . . . Hoops Domination

  On Jan. 23, 2008, Central High's girls' basketball team, coached by Frank Greco, defeated
visiting Martin Luther King, 86-41, to collect its 100th consecutive Public League victory (and
seventh of the 2007-08 season).
  They topped Frankford in their next game, raising the total to 101, and then fell to Northeast,
53-51, in the final game of the regular season.
  Below are some facts/figures concerning the streak, which included regular season games,
and playoffs. Colleges are listed next to those players who were seniors.

The Streak, Year by Year . . .

2001-02
PL regular season: 13-0.
Playoff victims: Fels, Franklin, University City, Franklin LC.
Starters: Nikkia Bright (Rosemont), Ashley Edwards, Sharae Middlebrook, Ashley Morris, La'Kia Stewart.
Key sub: Megan Ellis.
Championship game: Defeated Franklin LC, 61-39, on the strength of a 27-8 third quarter. Edwards had 17 points,
13 rebounds and three assists.

2002-03
PL regular season: 12-0.
Playoff victims: Prep Charter, Gratz, University City, Strawberry Mansion.
Starters: Ashley Edwards, Megan Ellis, Sharae Middlebrook, Ashley Morris, La'Kia Stewart (Kent).
Key subs: Meredith Lowe, Telisha McClure.
Championship game: Defeated Strawberry Mansion, 86-41, behind Stewart (21 points, eight rebounds) and Morris
(15, 10, 11 assists).

2003-04
PL regular season: 13-0.
Playoff victims: Masterman, Washington, Franklin LC, University City.
Starters: Ashley Edwards (St. Bonaventure), Megan Ellis (St. Bonaventure), Meredith Lowe, Sharae Middlebrook
(Cabrini), Ashley Morris (Temple).
Key subs: Gena Brown, Shannon Ellis, Sarah Jones, Mallori Lofton-Malachi, Telisha McClure.
Championship game: Defeated University City, 73-65, behind Edwards (19 points, eight rebounds) and Morris
(12 of 21 points in fourth quarter).

2004-05
PL regular season: 11-0.
Playoff victims: Penn, Frankford, University City, Engineering and Science.
Starters: Danielle Anders (Coppin), Gena Brown (NYU), Shannon Ellis (East Stroudsburg), Meredith Lowe
(Wesleyan), Telisha McClure.
Key subs: Sarah Jones, Mallori Lofton-Malachi.
Championship game: Defeated Engineering and Science, 79-56, behind Brown's 21 points and Anders' 18 points,
eight rebounds.

2005-06
PL regular season: 11-0.
Playoff victims: Dobbins, Gratz, University City, Engineering and Science.
Starters: Dominique Adams, Jillian Barrett, Sarah Jones, Mallori Lofton-Malachi (South Florida), Telisha McClure
(Wilmington).
Key subs: Brittany Harriott, Damira Holden, Karen Pankey, Janaa Pickard.
Championship game: Defeated Engineering and Science, 58-46, as Sarah Jones (16 points, four assists) and
Mallori Malachi (14, eight rebounds) led the starters and frosh sub Janaa Pickard mixed 10 points, nine boards
and four blocks.

2006-07
PL regular season: 9-0
Playoff victims: Overbrook, University City, Gratz, Engineering and Science. 
Starters: Sarah Jones (Villanova), Janaa Pickard, Dominique Adams (West Chester), Renee Deas, Jillian Barrett.
Key subs: Brittany Harriott, Rae'Shelle Drayton.
Championship game: Defeated Engineering and Science, 53-44, as Sarah Jones shook off an 0-for-9 start to
finish with 23 points and reel off 17 in a row. She added 14 rebounds and three assists. Janaa Pickard added
seven points, five rebounds and three blocks despite severe foul trouble. Help also came from Renee Deas
(nine points, six assists).

2007-08
PL regular season: 8-0 (lost in game No. 9, final game of regular season, to Northeast)
