Doubleheader at La Salle University
Frankford 7, Washington 0
Soph righthander Omar Cruz picked a great time to twirl his first
career shutout. He fanned five in a four-hitter and the Pioneers played
error-free defense. Ricky Alvarez (single) and Brandon Gonzalez (double) stroked
hits worth two runs apiece in a six-run second. Augusto Ortega went 3-for-4 with
a walk, two steals and two runs scored. Harrison Leal, who arrived in the third
inning after attending a funeral, had Washington's only extra-base hit, a
double. In the seventh, the 5-2 3/4, 121-pound Alvarez, the No. 9 hitter, became
one of the smallest players in world baseball history to receive an intentional
walk. Up next was Ortega. He swung at the first pitch and pounded into a
doubleplay, thus ending the inning.
Central 6, GAMP 3: Pete Rowe pitched two-hit, one-run ball over the
final four innings to gain the win, in relief of Kevin Pfeifer, and Mike
Cavallaro lashed a pair of RBI singles. Dan Quinn and Mark Gervasi also bagged
two hits apiece, as did losing pitcher Dom Raia (one was a triple). Central
suffered a late-game blow when Pfeifer, incorrectly called out (according to
still pics culled from a video) on a close play at first base, was ejected after
slamming his helmet and raging at ump Jim Carpino, "Are you kidding me?!" The
dismissal made him ineligible for the championship game.

Forfeit. A recent Prep Charter-Esperanza
regular season game ended with a benches-clearing episode. The umps gave
each squad a "team forfeit," meaning they'd have to forfeit their next game.

forfeiting that one, was allowed to participate in today's playoffs.
Esperanza did not have another pre-playoff game remaining and, thus, lost
this one by forfeit. MaST competes in a suburban league, but is inside the
city limits and competes in the Pub playoffs.
