June 7

Final
Judge 6, La Salle 4
        Eric Ruhland allowed three first-inning runs, but finished with a nine-strikeout four-hitter as the Crusaders gave 25-year coach Joe McDermott his fifth championship. Mark Dickson (RBI double) and Matt McKenna (two-run single) created a 3-3 tie in the third, Bill Reilly got home a run in the third on a fielder's choice, Kirk Bucholski lashed an RBI double in the fourth and Dennis Klinger homered in the fifth. Losing pitcher Bryan Harvey had an RBI double.

Semifinals
      Judge 4, Kennedy-Kenrick 2
      Eric Ruhland allowed eight hits and five walks, but survived because he struck out 10 and six K-K runners were erased on the basepaths. Ruhland's RBI double keyed a four-run third. The other three runs scored on bases-loaded walks. K-K's Jason Rowinski went 3-for-3 with a walk.

       La Salle 6, Carroll 3
      John Reifsnyder allowed four hits in five innings and fanned seven. Mike Lombardo got the save with two strong innings. Kyle Elliott provided a 4-3 lead in the fifth with a two-run double that was lost in the sun. Ryan Parfitt hit a solo homer in the sixth. Carroll's Tom Gardner had a two-run double.

May 31
Second Round
    La Salle 7, Conwell-Egan 1
    Bryan Harvey allowed just two hits in six innings, struck out six and went 2-for-4. No. 9 hitter Mike Manzi smacked a three-run homer in the second. Matt Michel added a two-run shot in the third.
    Kennedy-Kenrick 4, Roman 1
    Knuckle-curve specialist Matt Johnson pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and the run scored against him was unearned. No. 9 hitter Marc Wagner slugged a two-run homer. 

May 30
First Round
    Conwell-Egan 4, Ryan 3
    Gavin Beier pitched a seven-hitter and Kyle Lorenz drove in the winning run in a two-run sixth with a double. Ryan's John Price allowed no earned runs.
    Roman 8, SJ Prep 0
    Phil Terry pitched a three-hitter and Bob Drozdowski hit a double in the fifth to drive in twin brother John, who'd singled. Prep's Andrew Gambone had faced the minimum number of batters to that point. Later, Anthony Dabrowski, Tim Mahon, Todd Kiefski and Terry had RBI while Joe McCourt and Ray Tierney scored two runs apiece.

    North Preplayoff
    Conwell-Egan 3, North 0
    Making his first varsity start, Mike Pinto twirled a five-hit shutout and allowed no one as far as third base. Shawn Grassi had an RBI on a double, Tom Terry had another on a sacrifice fly.

FINAL
JUNE 5
    Frankford 5, GAMP 3
    Ed Durfor allowed seven hits, reached base three times (two walks, hit-by-pitch) and stole three bases as Frankford won its first title since 1981. Jim Connolly had two RBI on a groundout and double while Russ Pizzo and Mike Tritz had RBI singles. For GAMP, Joe DeRosa had two doubles and an RBI.

SEMIFINALS
JUNE 1
    Frankford 9, Central 7
    Ed Durfor persevered for the win despite allowing six hits and five walks and uncorking five wild pitches. He also had a two-run triple. Mike Tritz went 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBI. Russ Pizzo and Tom DiBello added two hits, one RBI. Central's Brian Schuster went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and one RBI. Ian Cohen did the near-impossible -- three RBI with no hits (two on sacrifice flies, one on a groundout).
    GAMP 10, Bartram 9 (8 innings)
    The Pioneers won it with one out in the home eighth as Danny Ferrazzano was hit by a pitch, stole second and was singled in by Mike Sacco. GAMP overcame 5-1 and 9-6 deficits. Sacco pitched 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Bartram's Bryan Hines went 2-for-3 with two walks, three RBI and four steals.

QUARTERFINALS
Thursday, May 25
    Bartram 5, Saul 4: Anthony Boyer allowed four hits and fanned 11 in 6 1/3 innings and got help from Steve Guida, who recorded a game-ending strikeout as Jon Ramos came steaming down the line, trying to steal home. Kelvin Rawlinson had a two-run triple in a three-run first. Saul's Steve McDowell went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Mike Jones, working on one day's rest, pitched a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts.
   GAMP 11, Northeast 8: Girard Academic Music Program scored eight runs (all unearned) in the visiting seventh to erase a 5-3 deficit and then held on to stun Northeast, the four-time defending champ, 11-8. GAMP’s rally included four errors and five hits and was capped by Chris DeMarco’s grand slam. Mike Sacco won in relief.
   Central 3, Lincoln 2: Brian Schuster allowed nine hits and four walks and plunked four batters, but forced Lincoln to strand 13 runners. Tony Figueroa went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
   Frankford 12, Roxborough 2: In a five-inning game played at Washington, Ed Durfor allowed four hits and no walks, struck out eight and went 4-for-4 with a triple, three steals and four runs scored. Jim Connolly homered and had three RBI. Roxborough soph Mike Gibbs had a double and a two-run homer.

ROUND OF 16
Tuesday, May 23
    Saul 3, Washington 2: Saul, a three-year PL member coming out of lowly Division C, registered a gigantic upset over the Division A champs by scoring three runs in the visiting seventh to erase a 2-0 deficit. An error and two bases-loaded walks brought in the runs. Mike Jones allowed five hits and fanned seven.
    Bartram 5, Olney 3: Steve Guida raised his league record to 9-0 in a five-hitter with eight strikeouts and went 2-for-4 with an RBI as Bartram advanced to a quarterfinal for the first time since 1983.
    Frankford 14, Mastbaum 7: Ed Durfor had four hits, including a double, and three RBI to help make Glenn Labadie a winner. Durfor had two hits and scored twice in a nine-run fourth. Mastbaum’s Mike Street homered and doubled.
    Central 10, Eng. and Science 0: Jeff Mihocko pitched a four-hitter over five innings with nine strikeouts and Gabe Givnish had a two-run double to end it.
   Lincoln 8, Bok 0: Miguel Morell pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and Brian Corbett went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Brian Kelly added a double and triple for one RBI.
   Roxborough 13, Edison 2: Steve Furtak pitched a five-inning three hitter with six strikeouts and Steve Horvat went 2-for-2 with three runs scored.
    Northeast 11, Franklin LC 0: Jon Stears pitched a five-inning one-hitter with eight strikeouts while Chris Hymes, Dave Firth, Cory Ford and Steve Josephson homered. Second baseman Jesse Bulicki caught a liner, stepped on the bag and threw to first for a triple play.
    GAMP 10, Overbrook 0: Rod Anello’s two-run double fueled a two-run first and Chris DeMarco went 3-for-4 with two RBI.


First Round
Thursday, May 18
    Mastbaum 14, Kensington 6: Sophomore righthander Mark Hansberry got the win with 4 2/3 innings of one-run relief. Leadoff hitter Rob Vose went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, Mike Street had a two-run double and Mike Smith (RBI triple) and Jasson Gonzalez (two-run single) had the big hits in a six-run fifth.  
    Franklin LC 6, Fels 4: Eric Rossiter pitched a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts and Joe Morris had a two-run single as the Bobcats grabbed a 4-0 lead in the third. Clinton Hackett tripled twice for the losers.
    Eng. and Science 7, Mansion 3: Tim Ennis pitched a four-hitter while Hector Martinez went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Steve Foglia went 3-for-4 with a triple and one RBI.
    Saul 12, Furness 2: Mike Jones went four innings in the five-inning game and had two RBI. John Ramos had a homer and three RBI and Steve McDowell had a double and triple for two RBI.
