The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Romans Varsity Football Team Won the Philadelphia CYO “O” Division Championship, as well as the Philadelphia Archdiocesan Championship, Saturday Night, 22-20, over St. Katherine (Wayne, Pa) at Villanova University.  The Championship is the fourth in the history of the program, but the first since 2002.  The game, which was the feature of the CYO Parade of Champions, did not disappoint.  The Romans overcame a 12-point, fourth-quarter deficit with two touchdowns in the final 3:30.  Entering the game the Romans brought with them a six-game winning streak, as well as a 27-quarter unscored-upon streak.  They faced off against an undefeated St. Katherine of Siena team who had not lost a game in the past two full seasons.
The Romans started the scoring in the game when fullback Weston French followed guard Guy Cook up the middle on a trap play 10 yards for a touchdown.  Connor McSherry then kicked the two point conversion to give the Romans an 8-0 first quarter lead.  The Romans then surrendered 20 straight points to the high powered offense of St. Katherine.  However, the Romans blocked two of St. Katherine’s extra point attempts keeping their chances alive -- one apiece by Connor McSherry and Luke Dahowski.  With just over seven minutes to go the Romans took control of the ball at their own 40 yard line.  The Romans drove down the field with tough running by Tailback Sean Reilly, and a screen pass to Ryan Arcidiacono.  The big play on the drive was a pass down the sideline from quarterback Ryan Whitney to Connor McSherry.  The drive was capped off by a 5 yard touchdown run by French, his second of the game.
After holding St. Katherine to a three-and-out capped off by a sack by Tom Reidy, the Romans got the ball back around midfield with 1:33 left on the clock.  After two running plays to Reilly and French, Whitney hit McSherry again, this time on a corner route, which McSherry took down the sideline to the 3. Sean Reilly finished off the drive with a 1 yard Touchdown run off the left side behind tackle Nick Walchonski, and guard Mike Moffa to tie the game 20-20 with 1:01 left.  Connor McSherry connected on the two-point kick to give the Romans the lead.  The Championship was sealed when McSherry intercepted St. Katherine quarterback for his second of two interceptions with 47 seconds remaining.
This was the second Archdiocesan Championship for Head Coach Tom White, who won his first championship in 1997.  The Defense was led by linebacker Kevin Hannings, defensive linemen John and Chris Saponera, and Luke Hutkin. Also, cornerback and wingback Sean Trymbiski added hard-nosed tackles on defense, and short pass receptions and tough runs on offense.  The Romans finished the season 9-1-1 overall, scoring 225 points, and allowing only 54 points.  The Romans include players from six parishes -- Our  Lady of Mount Carmel (Doylestown), Our Lady of Guadeloupe (Buckingham), St Jude (Lansdale), St. Martin (New Hope), St. Andrew  (Newtown), and St. Katherine ( Horsham).
