Doubleheader at Gratz
Dobbins 20, Mastbaum 12: The Mustangs overcame a 12-0 deficit to advance to
the final as Terrance Stafford (11-52) ran for two TDs and caught four passes
for 50 yards. James Glover (7-95) and Karon "Ron-Ron" James (16-42, clinching
TD) also ran well and Kevin Butler had an interception. For Mastbaum, Tyree
Stone-Davis, making his first appearance at QB, passed 7-for-20 for 190 yards
and one TD apiece to his twin brother, Tyrin (2-79), and Fermin Castellanos
(5-106). Sean Hubert managed a pick.
Gratz 12, Roxborough 6: QB Khalil Brown turned a pair of broken
plays into long touchdowns as the Bulldogs, Pub members for 81 seasons, claimed
just their second postseason win. Brown picked up a fumbled shotgun snap and
dashed 50 yards to the end zone, creating a 6-6 tie. Trapped on a right-side
keeper, he won it by stopping short just before the sideline and flipping maybe
a 10-yard pass to Aaron Rice, who went all the way (the play covered 64 total
yards). Antonio Murrell scored on a keeper for Roxborough while Akmed Greene ran
26 times for 131 yards and turned a bomb from Murrell into a 59-yard TD with
2:10 left. A no-doubt motion call (TWO backs were moving) erased it. Curtis Hunt
clinched the win by intercepting Murrell on the Gratz 24 at 0:26.

Gratz 8, Dobbins 2: Filling in
briefly for injured QB Khalil Brown, Michael Mobley ran 25 yards for a third
quarter TD and powered up the middle for a conversion run. He had not run the
ball since Week Two. Mobley also posted a late interception as Gratz captured
its first title since winning the overall Pub crown in 1949. Javonte Reed and
Jamil Morgan recovered fourth quarter fumbles. Brown had 72 yards on seven
carries. Dobbins scored when Terrance Stafford dropped Mobley for a safety.
Karon "Ron-Ron" James carried 13 times for 68 yards.

Leonard snagged two interceptions. Lamar

Doubleheader at Southern
Northeast 21, Frankford 9: Tyleel Taylor produced 171 yards on 23
carries, but the TDs went to Eric Hines (13-44) and Malik Stokes on runs and to
Deion Barnes on a pass from Stokes. Frankford's most productive players were
rusher Zaire "Bam" Anderson (13-95) and receiver Azario Frost (3-52). Keone
Berry booted a 36-yard field goal and Shawn Johnson managed an interception.
Washington 34, Bartram 6: The Eagles earned their ninth
title-game appearance in the last 10 seasons as Daquan Cooper turned his only
carry into a 34-yard TD after scoring earlier on a 23-yard pass from Aaron
Wilmer. English Peay (14-65), Chea Sloh and Wilmer all ran for TDs while Peay
added an interception. For Bartram, Al-Hajj Shabazz hustled for 123 yards of

FINAL
At Northeast
Washington 40, Northeast 0: Simba Sellers set an early tone in
the biggest rout in Pub finals history (breaking 42-6 by Frankford over Bartram
in 1986)
by posting a fumble recovery, an interception and 3 1/2 sacks
worth 24 yards. Sharrif Floyd proved worthy of his best-DL-in-the-country rep by
blocking a punt and making the deflection that led to Sellers' interception.
With his first of three TD passes, a 4-yarder to Nate Smith, Aaron Wilmer
claimed the PL mark for career TD passes; '95 Germantown grad Spencer Whetts had
owned it with 38. The Eagles led at halftime, 34-0, thanks to a 27-0 second
quarter. The win gave coach Ron Cohen his 11th PL title, breaking the record of
Frankford's Al Angelo. The Eagles were the first winners of three consecutive
crowns since Angelo's 1971-73 squads. With hopes of making the Pub look good on
a reality show featuring Northeast teacher Tony Danza, the former star actor,
the School District allowed all students free admission. On a drab day with the
threat of rain, the attendance was nothing special. And, yes, many Washington
people could not help but comment, "Guess we showed Tony who's the boss."

West Catholic 21, Bok 0: The Burrs entered with a 36.6 scoring
average, but found themselves trailing at halftime, 7-0, thanks to a TD pass
from Andre Frazier to Gary Jackson. John Ruppert, a starter on the defensive
line since his freshman year, then added guard duties and West again looked
somewhat like its usual self. Brandon Hollomon finished with 177 yards (149
beyond intermission) and two TDs on 29 carries. Jarred Evans ran for a 2-yard
score and passed 13-for-17 for 119 yards while eclipsing the school season
record (1,586, David Long collected 1,488 in 1982). For Bok, ends Chris Sherrod
and Jacqual Dobbs halved 14 tackles and combined for seven losses.

Wood 42, Gratz 6: The Vikings stormed to 28 points in the
second quarter, thus assuring the second half would be played with a running
clock. Charlie McCairns sparked the outburst by logging three tackles
behind the line and recovering a mishandled squib kickoff.
Jerry Rahill passed 11-for-14
for 180 and one TD apiece to Kevin Murt and Scott Adkins and turned shotgun
snaps into scores of 37 and 18 yards. Murt (10-55) also ran for two
six-pointers. Gratz' score came on a 46-yard run by Jamir Anderson.

La Salle 31, Washington 20: This one started like 2008's -- La
Salle chose to receive, Washington kicked off with wind and played good defense,
and scored a quick TD (on Aaron Wilmer's 47-yard keeper). The one big exception
-- Holding wiped it out. The Explorers not only regrouped. They coasted to a
31-7 lead before Washington posted a pair of fourth quarter TDs. Jamal
Abdur-Rahman made two interceptions, returned a fumble 36 yards for a score and
contributed 132 yards of rushing (40) and receiving (82, another TD). Drew
Loughery passed 13-for-21 for 188 yards and three TDs, with the other two going
to Sam Feleccia and Connor Hoffman (5-60). Mike Bennett hammered a 37-yard field
goal and sent four of his six kickoffs to the end zone. Shane Brady made 11
tackles. Wilmer accounted for 306 yards, passing 16-for-28 for two scores and
bagging another 140 on 18 carries.
