Once again, Catholic League ready to state its
case
By TED SILARY

Where state playoffs are concerned, could the third time be the full-blown charm
for Catholic League football?
We say full-blown because Years 1 and 2 of PIAA membership were not exactly
unproductive.
In 2008, as you'll remember, Archbishop Wood (Class AAA) and West Catholic (AA)
each advanced to state championship games in Hershey. Neither succeeded, but the
overall statement was rather loud.
Then, last year, La Salle not only made a state-final visit in AAAA, it "snowstormed"
to a 24-7 triumph over State College.
Can 2010 produce a three-headed monster? That's the talk behind the CL scenes.
With the see-ya-laters of North Catholic, Cardinal Dougherty and Kennedy-Kenrick
(RIP), the league is down from 17 to 14 schools and the divisional breakdown now
features five apiece in AAAA and AA with four in between in AAA.
No fewer than eight are maintaining ascend-to-the-top aspirations.
Realistically, even.
La Salle last Friday came within a point of doubling the score (27-14) on a
traditional power, North Penn, while Roman, thanks in part to NC-CD refugees,
and St. Joseph's Prep, under the league's only new coach, Gabe Infante, also are
showing stuff-strutting possibilities.
The headliners are scatback Jamal Abdur-Rahman (Villanova) for La Salle, two-way
handyman back Dennis Regan for Roman and quarterback-safety Skyler Mornhinweg
(Stanford; still just a junior) for Prep; all he did was account for five
touchdowns in a 36-25 win over Public League power George Washington.
Class AAA should be wildly competitive, with three of the four teams in the
hunt.
By transfer from Prep, Wood has added star rusher Desmon Peoples to dart/dash
behind impressive grunts. Cardinal O'Hara, which would have been productive
anyway thanks to passer Ryan Laughlin and rusher Adam Dempsey, boasts a
gobble-real-estate import of its own in Brendan McLaughlin (Avon Grove).
Monsignor Bonner, which like O'Hara has dropped down from AAAA, looks largely to
quarterback Sean Quarterman and receivers Jamie Juisti and John McGilligan.
Class AA will feature a two-horse race between West and Bishop McDevitt.
West's QB, Anthony Reid, arrived from North and has multiple quality playmates.
So many, in fact, that the Burrs' Great Eight features no linemen. McDevitt's
leader is do-it-all Matt Conroy, who by mid-October will probably be driving the
team bus.
This season could have produced a father-son showdown between O'Hara coach Danny
Algeo and his dad, Jim. Alas, while O'Hara dropped from AAAA to AAA, Lansdale
Catholic fell from AAA to AA and the schools are not slated to meet in the
mandatory divisional crossovers meant to flesh out the schedule.
Ten years ago this week, when Danny was the head coach at Phoenixville, their
teams did meet. LC won, 29-26, on a last-minute TD.
"We were both a little concerned that we'd have to play again," Danny said. "I
know I can speak for my father. He's as happy as I am that it won't be
happening." *
