Football Players of the Week, '11
Return to TedSilary.com Home Page
We are happy to announce a continuation of the
partnership between Get In the Zone
Inc. and TedSilary.com that will enable us to award T-shirts to all FB Players
of the Week
during the 2011 season.
GITZ is owned by former Malvern Prep FB player Brett
Antell, and we very much
appreciate his willingness to help honor the winners with more than an announcement
on
the site. Not that a mere announcement wasn't gigantic (smile). We hope you contact
Brett for the items/services mentioned above.
We'll usually get the T-shirts to the winners with the
help of the good, ol' United States
Postal Service (to the player in care of his coach), though Ted may some deliver some
in
person if he knows he'll be seeing a winner's team that upcoming weekend.
The regular announcement . . .
Every Wednesday, we will name six Players of the Week in
this space -- two apiece from
Catholic and Public (offense, defense), one from Inter-Ac schools (overall)
and a best performance
in defeat from any of the schools. We will take
nominations through Tuesday night.
Also . . . no
nominations for lines/groups of players. We name
an Offensive Line of the Week
each Tuesday in the Daily News
(from Week 3 forward)
and the members of our Offensive Line
of the
Season, to be
picked in December, will receive T-shirts.
Goofy nominations won't be posted.
We encourage coaches to make nominations, especially to
make sure we are aware of
special line play ("anonymous" is fine). Players can win just once through
the regular season;
everyone will again be eligible in the playoffs.
Send nominations, with the reason you're
nominating the player to silaryt@phillynews.com.
As always, thanks for your interest/help.
We will NOT post e-mails
after the fact concerning the Player of the Week choices, positive
or negative. Once the results are posted, the nomination e-mails will be
deleted. Performances by
players in competitive games, and/or those considered upsets, will generally carry
more weight.
Thank you,
Ted
Unless I hear from winners at silaryt@phillynews.com or 215-854-5814
(just leave word on this
voice mail by mid-morning each
Wednesday), I'll make strong guesses on
T-shirt sizes.

a AAA semi. (Also ran for 96 yards.)
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
OFFENSE
Chris Johnson-Cruz,

Forced into action because Michael Keir (injury) was unavailable, he
merely broke the city postseason record for TD passes, with five, and ran 62

Made two gigantic plays as the Lancers ended a nine-game losing
streak against their, um, disliked rival. Blocked a field goal attempt as the
first half wound down and returned a fumble for a 20-yard TD with 3:09 left,
breaking a 20-20 and sending his squad to a 28-20 triumph.
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
OFFENSE
Matt Magarity, La
Salle, QB
Accounted for 274 yards and passed for two TDs as the Explorers,
roaring back from a 17-0 deficit, stunned the Prep, 28-17, to claim the AAAA
regular season championship.
DEFENSE
Roberto
Barron-Harris, Roman, T
Admittedly, we don't pick guys from severe blowouts too often, but
this guy's performance in the Cahillites' 50-0 triumph over Conwell-Egan was
impossible to ignore. By halftime, he owned six tackles behind the line. As the
second half started, he made a stop AT the line and then recovered a fumble
before calling it a night.
INTER-AC LEAGUE
Chris DiBello,
Haverford School, C-LB
In snow, on slush, he returned an interception for a touchdown and
keyed the line to a blocking performance that netted 278 yards, leading the

Accounted for 214 yards of rushing/passing and three TDs as the Hawks
squashed Roman, 42-20.
DEFENSE

His blocking helped Hakeem Sillman run for 259 yards and two TDs in a
49-28 win over Northeast.

CATHOLIC LEAGUE
OFFENSE
Tom Murtha,
Bonner, T
Helped the offense churn to 300-plus yards as the Friars topped O'Hara,
20-13, for their first win against that arch-rival since 2001. (Also saw spot
duty on defense; one TFL).

Dan Wasylenko, La
Salle, DT
Though relatively new to defense, he has become quite the stalwart.
Helped to limit Judge's rushing attack to 40 yards in a 33-14 victory. (Also
continued to sparkle on offense as Tim Wade rushed for 235 yards.)
INTER-AC LEAGUE
Tyler Hightower,
Chestnut Hill, T-DT
Did yeoman work on both sides of the ball as the Blue Devils opened
the Inter-Ac season by surprising the defending champion, Haverford School, 7-3.
BEST PERFORMANCE IN DEFEAT
Jahreeson Caines,
Future, DT
Notched seven tackles in the Firebirds' 40-8 setback vs. Imhotep.
Four were solos, one was made behind the line and he notched a hurry, also.

"Day-Day" Brown, Dobbins, RB-KR
Posted three rushing TDs and another via a kickoff return as
the Mustangs bested University City, 43-12. Accounted for 184 yards from
scrimmage. Also kicked a PAT and handled all punting. (Oh, and he made
two interceptions on defense.)

Johnson, West Phila., LB
Returned two interceptions for TDs as the Speedboys flattened
Franklin, 40-13, to achieve a 6-0 start for only the second time since
1928 (also 1984).
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
OFFENSE
Bruce Mapp,
West Catholic, WR
His three catches against McDevitt, in a 45-7 win, didn't

(and he cha-chinged to 116 yards). Accomplished this in one half of
action.

Mancini, SJ Prep, LB
Hustled for eight solo tackles and recovered a fumble as the
Hawks muffled Ryan, 31-3.
INTER-AC LEAGUE
Matt
Galambos, Haverford School, TE-LB
Aside from making seven catches (most by a Ford since 2004)
for 52 yards and two TDs, he sparked a 35-16 win over Washington
by notching seven solo stops and one apiece of these goodies: sack,
interception, fumble recovery, blocked PAT.
BEST PERFORMANCE IN DEFEAT
Teron
Dobbs, Carroll, WR-RB-DB
Though the Patriots were thumped by Penn Charter, 41-21,
Dobbs created a night-long positive impression by scoring three TDs in
as many manners -- 80-yard punt return, 45-yard reception, 8-yard run
out of a WildPatriot formation.
WEEK FIVE
PUBLIC LEAGUE
OFFENSE
Hakeem Sillman, Washington, RB
Sped/bulled for 251 yards and five TDs on 32 carries as the

Twice scored untouched on wingback counters -- a play brand
new to the repertoire -- and
averaged 13 yards on five scrimmage touches as the Pioneers edged
Northeast, 20-19.
DEFENSE
DeAndre Hariot, Roxborough, DB
Though the
Indians fell, 6-0, to Franklin, in two OTs, we felt this guy deserved
the honor. He
made three interceptions and came within inches of a fourth, and that
would have tied the
city record.
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
OFFENSE
Mike Anusky, Ryan, QB
Accounted for five TDs and 209 yards of passing/rushing as the Raiders
topped Carroll, 42-14.
Passed for 162 and three. Ran for 47 and two. The win gave Ryan its
first three-game winning
streak since 1998.

of the Silver Division, pulled
off a 19-14 upset of Germantown, of Gold.

Broke a city record that had stood since 1969, amassing 276 receiving
yards (10 catches) and
two TDs in a 32-7 win over Chestnut Hill Academy.
DEFENSE
Mike Piscopo, La Salle, LB
In the same week he committed to Northeastern for baseball,
showed he's a not a bad football
player, as well. Two of his five tackles went for losses as the
Explorers blanked West Catholic,
24-0. (Also made two important catches at TE.)
INTER-AC LEAGUE
Ryan Dolan, Gtn. Academy, RB-LB
In a 23-20 win over Hill School, he produced two TDs and 118

14-6.
DEFENSE
Doug Osborne, Boys' Latin, DB
Picked off two passes -- both inside the 5 yard line -- as the Warriors
triumphed at Franklin, 14-0.
(And maybe he'll share the shirt with his brother, Sam Drummond, who
also made an interception
and returned the ball 39 yards for a touchdown.)
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
OFFENSE
Nate Smith, Wood, WR
Needed just five catches to accumulate an amazing 218 yards (school
record) and two TDs as the
Vikings vanquished West Catholic, 28-0. (Also played lock-down defense
at cornerback.)

dumped North Penn, 44-27. The four
TDs tied a city record and all came in the final 19 minutes, fueling a
34-6 explosion. He could have had
six TDs; was ruled out of bounds on two other catches of end-zone fades
(and they did NOT occur in
drives that resulted in scores).
DEFENSE
Taishan Tucker, Roman, FS
Notched six solos among eight tackles as the Cahillies

DEFENSE
Desmond Sams,
West Phila., E-LB
Registered 10 solos among 14 tackles as the Speedboys surprised Bartram,
12-6. Also had three sacks
and made a tackle on a conversion. Began the game at end. Later moved to
linebacker when the Braves
started running away from him. (Also contributed on offense, scoring
both TDs.)
INTER-AC LEAGUE
Zachary Rego,
Haverford School, RB-DB
