Washington at the head of AAAA class

Is the Public League's primary football race, the one in Class AAAA, basically over before it had a chance to build momentum?

Well, George Washington High looked very impressive last Saturday while besting Frankford in a Gold Division opener and once some line issues get resolved, coach Ron Cohen's squad could truly prove to be awesome.

The Eagles, who would have been good anyway, added quarterback Tony Smith from Father Judge, defensive end Claudy Mathieu from Olney and grunt Mike McGlashen from Abraham Lincoln.

Two senior headliners, guard/defensive end Brandon Chudnoff (projected as a linebacker) and beyond-speedy wideout Daquan Cooper, have committed to Temple.

"The players and coaches are working hard, and we do feel good about what we have," Cohen said. "But, hey, the ball's not round and it can bounce funny ways. I still think back to our '98 team, which had all kinds of talent yet didn't win it."

Though Frankford owns a bright-light rusher in Jeffione Thomas, the league's (state's?) top prospect can be found at Northeast.

Deion Barnes, a 6-5, 230-pound, two-way end with agility, ornery tendencies, hands the size of snowshoes and room to become bigger/stronger, has reduced his favorites list to Penn State, Pitt, Michigan, South Carolina and Georgia.

In Silver, the other AAAA division, don't be surprised if Horace Furness, making a climb from AA, creates a stir. The most fabulous Falcon is rushing workhorse Sharif Smith, a stud even last year as a soph.

The AAA honors will go to Simon Gratz or Murrell Dobbins Tech.

Gratz looks to quarterback Khalil Brown and speedster Spencer Moses. Rusher-linebacker Terrance Stafford is Dobbins' dominant force, but he has plenty of help. A year ago, Dobbins won the regular-season title, then was slapped by Gratz come playoff time.

As always, Edward Bok Tech is the AA favorite, though star quarterback Andre Frazier is out for the season due to an injury suffered during a Temple combine. In the rhyme-time contest, the Wildcats offer fullback-linebacker Khalil Neal, though the coolest name (ever?) belongs to two-way guard Maurice T-Toe.

Imhotep and Delaware Valley, a pair of charter schools, are hoping, even expecting, even knowing, they'll press hard. Their respective pass-happy QBs are Christopher Lewis and Keith Page.

The league's one new team, Boys' Latin Charter, is in AAA. Mike Rufo is the coach. William Penn is outta here.

Other new coaches: Mark Effendian, John Bartram; Ed McGettigan, Abraham Lincoln; David DiEva, Olney (Barry Strube is on administrative leave; Dennis Ginenthal won the squad's first two games and then retired); Brian Kelly, Thomas Edison; Ernest Diggs, Jules Mastbaum Tech; Lorrel McCook, University City; and Evan Scott, Thomas FitzSimons.

Coach: Evan Scott, 1st year; Education: Gratz, East Stroudsburg. Career: 0-0.

Last year: 0-4, 5th; 2-8.

Great eight: Richard Williams, QB-DB, 6-1, 165; Jeremiah Bullock, TE-DE, 6-3, 190; Jack Burris, FB-LB, 5-7, 150; Derron Gaines, RB-DB, 5-9, 130; Steven Pruitt, WR-LB, 5-9, 175; Angelo Chaney, C-NG, 6-3, 205; Lamor Pearson, FB-LB, 5-9, 180; Isaiah Gillman, L-DL, 6-3, 210.

Happy about: how team is coming together under new staff.

Concerned about: lack of size.

Scott's comment: "Since we're so small, this is a rebuilding year."
