Amauro's Corner Amauro "Amar" Austin is
another of our trusty observers. He is not to be confused with Ruben Amaro,
the Phillies' assistant general manager. Like "Huck" Palmer,
Amauro is a West Catholic graduate. He will make occasional reports on games he sees.

PUBLIC LEAGUE
West 26, Overbrook 0
Its always fun to return to my
backyard at 48th & Spruce Sts on Turkey Day to see the old Battle of West
Philly. This year's edition was not nearly as competitive as past seasons, but
the atmosphere was awesome, a sellout crowd with many familiar faces and former
players in the series. As the score indicates, the game wasn't close and
actually it could/should have been worse as West Philly lost a fumble & had 3
TDs called back (didn't score on any of those possessions) by their 12 penalties
(worth 89 yards). I hope there are better days for the Hill-toppers and there
should be with some a hard work as they have a few promising underclassmen. Srs:
WR/CB Sultan Sanders (7 solo tackles) & two-way tackle Daine Coombs
(6-3 300) will both have college futures in this game if they so choose. Sanders
is an aggressive, hard-tackling corner. His brother, Omar ('Brook 01-02),
is already starring at QB at Millersville. Coombs is very intriguing. He just
started playing the game last season. He is strong and mean too. A Prep school
year would do him much justice as he is still learning. The state schools should
be all over him. The two Speedboy stars were Sr. QB/WR/FS Gerald Dove &
Jr. TE Chuck Henryhand. Dove was directly involved in 62.7% of the
offense as he had a hand in 32-of-51 plays. He rushed for 48 yards and a score,
caught two balls for 39 yards & passed for 124 yards and a score on 8-for-19.
Another solid performance from one of the City's best. Henryhand caught 5 balls
for 122 yards and a score. He is one of the league's underrated juniors. He's a
good athlete with great hands and a strong work ethic. He'd be a great slot
receiver and may serve West that way in the future. Sr. WR Shelton Myrie
(6-2 180) caught his 2nd TD in as many games. He was suspended from the team for
most of the season, but returned late to salvage something. The West coaches say
(and I agree) that he would have probably been their top receiver had he done
what he was supposed to in the off-season. He's got good speed and athleticism.
He's also got that look. The leading Speedboy receiver on the year Sr.
Sheldon Ford was doubled for much of this one and didn't catch a pass, but
he did throw 3 times completing each for 85 yards and a score. The Speedboy D
was led by impressive JV call-up Soph. DT James Destouet (6-2 300, a
blocked punt, a TFL
& a sack). He must have manhandled JV players all over the city because he
manhandled varsity guys on Turkey Day. He and Soph. NG Lawrence "Juicy" Brown
(6-0 306) will be a feared tandem for the next 2 years in West's 4-4 defense.
Sr. LB George Davis went out with a bang with 11 total tackles, two of
them for losses & a blocked punt of his own. Srs DE Keith Goldwire & LB Omar McLaurin (5-11
222) shared a sack for a safety.
AA's Notes: West has about 6 impressive Soph. line-man, 3 up from
JV. The one with the most potential is 6-5 315-lb OT Darren Watson. He's still a
bit uncoordinated and has just returned from a broken foot, but he shows
flashes. He had one stretch of 2 straight false start penalties, then was
benched. He came back and muscled 'Brook defenders. He is one to watch... The is
the worst I've ever seen the Panthers. Maybe giving them their own home field
would help. I rode past Haddington (nee Shepherd, nee
Chamberlain) Rec (57th & Vine) and couldn't figure why Brook didn't use that
field/ maybe its too short, who knows?.. The comment of the day came from West's
field man as late in this one he jokingly claimed, "Guess what the O in
Overbrook stands for, ZERO."
NOV. 24
AA'S NOTES
Was it just me or
were this past weekend's Public League semis the best two games I've seen all
season and in some time for that matter? Well guess what, they were? Frankford's
win over Central was high-scoring and exciting. While Washington's besting of
Dobbins deep in the 4th quarter was a good old fashion nail-biter with big play
after big play. What a day... How about Central's Jr. QB Joe Marshall
(6-1 180)? In only his first start (only 1 pass attempt coming in on the
season), he was scintillating passing for 191 yards & 2 scores (9-of-13) &
rushing for 66 yards and another score. This guy burst onto the scene in a big
way paving the way for the Lancer future. Next year, "Joe-Joe" will have two
dangerous skill players returning as well in fellow Jrs WR Rodney Sykes &
wing-back Devon Johnson. Both are playmakers. All three should receive
solid college interest... Frankford took the Lancers best shots and never went
down. Eventually they brought the knock out punch on their way to victory.
Behind the rushing triumvirate of Srs Mullins (19-176, TD), Benson
(19-90, 2 TDs) & Norris (4-52, 2 TDs) the Pioneers eventually pulled
away. I must commend the "Future" Brandon Norris for his great sportsmanship
this year. From the looks of things, it looked as if he would sparkle this year
after becoming the man by the end of his Freshman season, but he deferred to
others and took a lesser role. This kid is special too. His feet move like a
ballet dancer, his frame is small, but super strong & to top it off when he
takes off his hat you see that million dollar smile that most of the great ones
have... How about the heroics of Sr. WR Michael "Big Play" Washington? He
is the top Pioneer? He just makes plays baby! Already scoring a 1070 on the
SATs, he is receiving next to no recruiting interest for the moment. He could be
a difference maker for the Temples, Rutgers, James Madisons, Lafayettes &
Villanovas of the world. This guy is only the top player on a loaded squad that
has 9-10 senior college prospects... A forgotten man on this Pioneer squad all
year has been rock-hard Sr. TE/ILB Joe Farina (6-1 225). He has made big
play after big play and should he not opt for the bat & ball, why not try the
gridiron somewhere... Then came Game 2, and there was Jerry Butler.
Butler is one of the more impressive athletes I've seen all season. He owns sub
4.3 40 speed, a hawk's vision & David's heart. He only rushed 22 times for 230
yards & 2 TDs. His second TD being the game winner with under 40 tics to go.
Butler, only a Jr. and also the reigning PL Sprint Champion (100 & 200, the
former which he captured last in 10.82 seconds on a wet track), will be
recruiting by I-A schools up and down the East Coast and should be one of the
top backs in the state. He is one of 9 very impressive juniors at G-Dub. The
others are: monster NG David Gonser (6-2 240), QB/FS Chuck Hughes
(saved his best game for the semis with 2 picks, a game changing fumble recovery
& a host of stops), athletic wing Jeremiah Pitt, TE/DE John McFillin
(6-5 200), super athletic TE/DE Dominique Curry (6-3 190), strong DT
Stefan Ruff (6-0 265), rangy WR/DB Raymond Roy & small, but tough CB
Mikal Sabree. This team could be next year's Frankford, but the time now
is to try and dethrone the defending champs... Boy I feel bad for the Mustangs,
who controlled this one throughout and led for all but 37 seconds of this game.
That's a harsh was to go out... One thing's for sure and that's that this
edition of the 'Stangs may have been the fastest high school team that I've ever
seen. Each member of their 4 x 100 relay squad that plans to qualify for the
Championship of America competes in football as well as about 6 others that run
4.5 in the 40 or better. That's amazing!.. I wish guys like Greg Myers &
Ariel Simmons the best. Both will continue their careers somewhere...
Look out for Jr. QB/CB Steven Sydnor (6-2 180). He'll be one of the Pub's
top performers next year...
Fellas its not too late to send me your info for my first PPL
Gridiron Report that will be sent out now in Mid December which is roughly 3
weeks from now. I need 40 times, bench maxes, legit heights/weights, current &
preferred positions, phone numbers, ect. This report will go out to 20-25
different schools at different levels. It'll be a great opportunity for
everyone. Not only will I profile seniors, but also my top dozen Jrs. I'll also
list 20 other top juniors & my top 10 sophomores.
Man I can't wait until Thursday morning as my favorite game
of the year between Overbrook & West Philly will be played once again as will
every other big game around the city. What a great day for football...
Oh and last, but not least, GO BURRS!
NOV. 20
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Roxborough 30, Bartram 20
The Indians were pretty much on
cruise control in this one as Bartram coach Frank "Roscoe" Natale
disciplined roughly 5 key starters. I hope they had somebody taping as this
would have been a good game to tape for college purposes for their seniors. RB
Dante Bryant was once again a beast rushing 28 times for 172 yards,
taking a screen pass 17 yards for a score & returning a kick 42 yards to set his
TD up. That's 231 All-Purpose yards. There's no doubt in my my mind that Bryant,
the Pub's top rusher, could play at the I-AA level. He has that perfect blend of
deceptive speed & deceptive power. He also has great size and toughness. His 945
yards (8 games, 1 to go) would be much more had two of their games not been
canceled. This also served as the coming out party for impressive Sr. TE
Keenan Hite. Hite caught 3 balls for 36 yards and 2 scores. He is listed at
6-3 240 (probably more like 225), but he could easily hold 25 more lbs and be a
very good pass catching TE at the D-II (possibly I-AA) level. Prep school could
also be a viable option for this intriguing prospect as another year of
seasoning would hardly hurt. Its ironic he wasn't a more used option this
season. These were only his 2nd, 3rd & 4th catches of the season. Sr. QB
Karon Hill (6-1 185) also has some promise. He passed 5-of-11 for 65 yards
and 3 TDs. His most impressive throw went on Hite's 2nd score only a 1 yarder.
It was impressive because Hill, a lefty, effortlessly rolled right and made a
perfect throw in heavy traffic. He also thinks pretty well & runs well. I like
the chances of Sr. WR Terrence Clark (6-1 175) as well. He missed some
plays he should have made today, but he has that FB look and all the tools to go
with it. He deserves looks. Strong Sr. LB Kyle Earls led the defense with
7 solo tackles. He, too is a nice prospect. He brings the pain when he hits. Sr.
FS Clinton Taylor (9 total stops, fumble recovery) & Jr. rover (SS/WLB)
Chris Mitchell (8 stops) also held down the fort. Taylor seemed to make
big stops on Bartram's top rusher Seku Kamara. His gyrations also made
for much comedy. He's one of the top talkers in the Pub. Mitchell (6-1 190)
should be the top Indian next year. He has good size, speed and strength. He
should step into Bryant's role. For the Braves, Kamara was once again
impressive. "Canada" ran for 161 yards on 17 carries including a 69 yard score
in which he burned the Indian DBs. I'd love to see him on the track. He can fly
down the field. Freshman FB/LB Tyrell Coleman (5-9 175, already built
like a rock) was very impressive and bears watching down the road. He ran for a
26 yard score & had a TFL on D. He was also in on a few other pretty good
sticks. Sr. FS Gary "Snoop" Carter was a defensive leader with 10 total
stops and a broken up pass. Sr. CB George Morse played inspired ball on a
bad wheel still producing a sack & another TFL. Sr. DT Kennis Jones had a
TFL amongst his 8 stops. While Sr. DE Marcus Macklin had 2 TFLs among his
6 tackles.
AA's Notes: I wish there were something that could be done for
Seku Kamara. Staying the in states and going to Prep School could make him a
common name for college coaches next year. He's been a pleasant surprise the
second half of this season... The Indians were very impressive even though the
circumstances made things easier for them. If they had better lines, they may
have garnered a playoff spot this year with their quality in the skill
positions... Its a shame that Dante Bryant had to suffer missing two games
because of nonsense this year. The Lincoln game was canceled due to a stupid
fear of a storm that never really developed. Then last week's West Philly fiasco
made for that game being missed. This guy is one of the League's top performers
and deserves looks... Speaking of West Philly, it seems that a few of Bartram's
starters tried to pull the same act. They were shut down pretty fast by Coach
Natale though. I hate to see stuff like that. Don't these guys realize that they
are hurting themselves more than anybody especially the seniors. This is just
one less game for them to get in for the experience of playing high school
football #1 & for building their resume for the next level (for those that have
a chance to get their) #2. It stunk to see some of those guys walk around with
the I don't care attitude and even be unsupportive of their teammates at
times...
NOV. 14
PUBLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINAL
Central 15, King 8
Boy did the Lancers get more than they bargained for on this
cold, windy afternoon as the tough Golden Cougars hung tough until deep into this one and
even held the lead until 6:19 of the 4th quarter. If it weren't for Sr. QB Marcel
Quarterman's late game heroics on both sides of the ball, we just may be talking about
a huge upset. An 8 yard TD strike on 4th and goal to Jr. WR Rodney Sykes was the
difference maker as Mr. Q led the Lancers yet again. Quarterman ran 13 times for 72 yards
and passed 5-of-13 for 89 yards and 2 scores (He also threw 2 picks) on O. He made two
picks of his own on D to go along with 6 total stops. I just hope that he'll be able to go
next week against Frankford as at the end of his second pick he took a hard spill after
fumbling and never returned. Some suspect it may be a badly sprained or even broken wrist.
Let's pray it isn't nearly that severe. Sr. FB/LB Quindel "Milky" Ladson
(12-43 rushing) came back after missing two games with an injury and didn't look like he
missed a beat. He led the game being in on 15 total tackles and often times King ran way
from him. He made plays all over the field. He punished jokers all afternoon. Stud Sr. WR Jordan
Anderson made 2 huge catches for 58 yards. One went for a score. He also manhandled
DBs during rushing plays as he always does. Sykes was also a defensive star with a TFL
amongst his 5 stops and the back-breaking INT deep in the 4th. Jr. weak-side LB Cornelius
Bunch was once again a menace with 2 TFLs among his 10 tackles. He also batted down 2
balls while rushing in the backfield. Somebody better block him one of these days. I swear
I haven't seen anyone do it yet. Sr. DT Okezie Onyeanusi (6-5 235) was once again
impressive with strong play at the line including a TFL. This King team WILL be a force
next year. Their nucleus is mainly juniors. I love the rushing tandem of Jared Williams
(5-10 175) & Tirrell Dekeyser (5-8 185). Both are strong, quick & tough.
They combined to rush 28 times for 103 yards with Williams going in for a score. Fast, Jr.
multipurpose-back Sammy Tranks ran 9 times for 63 yards of his own & caught one
ball for 7 yards. He is a dangerous threat and should return next year as one of the Pub's
top performers. He reminds me a lot of Frankford's Arnold Mullins. Jr. QB Jeff
Campbell (6-3 175) has a chance to be very good with hard work. He struggled today in
the cold, but there will surely be better days. Tranks had a pick & defended another
pass on D. Sr. FS Dave Thomas had the other pick. he also recovered a fumble. Sr.
DT Kyle Patillo (6-2 275) went out with a bang and could be a nice prospect (state
schools) at the next level. He was juiced all afternoon en route to 11 total stops with 2
going for losses. Sr. DT Joel Morris (10 stops) & Jr. Rodney
"House" Carroll (6-1 300) were also factors.
AA's Notes: Why in the world does Central have to play Frankford in the semis. It only
makes sense for the Lancers to play Washington and Dobbins to have to play Frankford
right? I guess that's why this is the Pub... The master of the option Marcel Quarterman is
my choice for the Pub's MVP, getting a close nod over G-Town's Omar McDonnaugh. Q
has passed for a league high 14 TD passes & leads QBs with 8 rushing TDs. He runs that
option as good as anyone at this level and should have much success at the next. I just
hope he's able to play next week... Two of King's 02' stars hard-hitting QB/FS Dion
"Flee" Whittington & tough-as-nails MLB Kevin Snyder were on hand
to root their squad on. They did a good job... There was a very nice crowd even with the
cold as start time numbers looked to be roughly 50 people. That quickly swelled to well
over 200. Ironically, there were no funny comments today and I purposely stood on the King
side. Maybe it was too cold for humor...

Roxborough 1, Wes Phila. 0 (Forfeit)
Yesterday, I made the trip up to the Hills of Roxborough arriving
around 2 PM. My hopes were to get another look at some of the Indian Seniors (Bryant, Hill
& Earls in particular) for evaluation purposes for the small courtesy Pub Report that
I plan on sending out in a few weeks to various college coaches. When I walked onto the
windy field, I knew something was up. No yard markers, clock was off, 3 people in the
stands, no teams on the field, ect. Finally after about 10 minutes of investigation the
field man pulled up and told me that the game had been forfeited by West Philly as of
yesterday afternoon. In my mind, I immediately thought, what the FREAK? I wished someone
would have told us something. We do cover these games mainly for the kids you know and
that was a long trip from my Delaware county home/office. Forget all that though because I
didn't mind any of that stuff. I had to find out what was behind all this and so I said,
let's go over to West Philly and see what they have to say. As soon as I walked into the
building, I see coach John R. Lay and we began to chat. In his words, he said,
"We experienced a bit of team mutiny. Only 14 of my 30 players showed for practice on
Monday & Tuesday. The sad part about it is that I suspect that my team leaders are the
ring leaders." If that is indeed the case this is bad in many ways. Guys like me live
to stick their necks out for these kids, but when stuff like this happens, it kind of
leaves a sour taste in your mouth. Many people got hurt yesterday. 1. The Roxborough kids
that I saw once in bad conditions and wanted to see again for my own records, maybe next
week. 2. The West kids who damaged their character by sending their coach to the edge and
making him do something he almost surely didn't want to do, but had to in order to show
who was boss. 3. Us, the guys that have these guys backs. We can't save a guy that doesn't
want it. That's the gist of what I'm trying to say. I've helped many kids in the last 4
years since I've been back on the scene, but my heart has hardened towards the ungrateful
ones and the ones who just don't want it. I want all the kids to do well and make it, but
some of the excuses are ridiculous. Let's get something straight. Read this and let it
register. THERE ARE NO EXCUSES FOR THE ONES THAT MAKE IT! I was sick so I didn't
come to practice does not count for crap in the real world. Nor does any other sappy
excuse. I hope these guys get their act together and soon because the seniors don't have
much time. This is just something to think about. I hope some of these guys read
this.

INTER-AC LEAGUE
Episcopal 31, Haverford School 7
Sorry for the delay with this one, but duty called an Amar had to
answer. This may quite possibly be a fixture on my schedule as EA-Haverford day seems to
be a festive event as 4 sporting events took place between the two friendly rival schools
over the course of the day. Tail-gating, children's games, ect. made for a carnival like
atmosphere. In this football contest, the Churchman were emotional and tough en route to a
surprising rout of the Fords. It all started with brassy Sr. QB Brian Shanahan who
threw for 83 yards and 2 TDs while also rushing for 44 yards. The TDs went to rock hard
Jr. TE Joe Rosati & Jr. RB Peter Wichman both in the first qtr. EA never
looked back. Wichman gained 94 yards on 15 carries and had another TD. Sr. FB Justin
Leake (6-1 195) ran hard 12 times for 51 yards and another score. Leake was also the
leader on D with 8 stops with 1 going for a loss and a broken up pass. Rosati (6-2 190)
was also a beast. He was in on 10 tackles with 2 going for a loss and played with constant
emotion/fire. He'll play D-I/I-AA one day, mark my words... I was also impressed with
rangy Sr. DB Joel Patterson (6-1 165). He made 5 solo tackles & broke up 4
passes. Jr. DB Dylan Brown made 2 picks with 79 yards worth of returns. This was my
first look at Wisconsin signee Bryan Savage (6-4 215). It may have been his worst
game of the year (9-for-24, 149 with a TD & an INT. He also ran for 43 yards), but I
was largely impressed. This kid has it all, the whole package. He has size, GREAT feet, a
very strong arm & a great persona. His TD was a bomb to Sr. WR Dan Coleman (6-3
170) for 69 yards in which he just out-jumped an EA DB and went home for the score.
Coleman is a D-I Prospect in his own right and I must say has improved greatly from when I
saw him last year. He seems a step or two faster and much more fluid. Sr. TE Pat Fisher
(6-6 215) caught 4 balls for 60 yards. He deserves looks as well. He has all kinds of room
to grow. Jr. T Will Barker (6-7 250) will get all kinds of looks in the next year.
He was the best HS lineman not to mention his intriguing size & build. Ditto for So. T
Dutch Gaitley. He is an inch, maybe two inches bigger than his listed 6-6 250.
Savage was tough on D being in on 2 sacks. Fisher made 7 stops. Coleman was in on 10. Sr.
LB Ben O'Brien was today's leader as he was in on 15 stops with a sack &
another loss included.
AA's Notes: I was largely impressed with Savage, but it wasn't for his vast
skills, but mostly for his grit & will. He never gave up though his squad was down big
and played from open to close. His career bares watching... This was one cold afternoon.
I've been waiting for this all Fall, real football weather... The cool moment of the game
came when HS deep sub Sr. DL Imani Hutty made a INT in the latter stages. The crowd
and sidelines went nuts. The smile on the kid's face when he came to the sideline was what
prep athletics was all about...

PUBLIC LEAGUE
Mastbaum 34, Franklin 12
Franklin made this one a game for a half before the Panther defense
woke up and put it away. The star of this game was indeed Franklin Sr. Multi-Purpose back Darrell
Fincher (5-9 175). Fincher just does it all. He is one of the top performers in the
Pub and a fine prospect possibly even at the 1-AA level. Its just a shame that the
Electrons are so young/less talented this season. Fincher, who led the Pub in INTs last
season as a junior with 9, recorded his first of this season today. He's been battling
injuries all season, but looked fully healthy today as he caught 5 balls for 92 yards and
2 scores along with 2 rushes for 26 yards while making 7 total stops, breaking up two
passes & recovering a fumble. Needless to say "Finch" had a busy day and was
IMO the best player on the field even in a losing effort. The Panthers were pretty much on
cruise control especially in the 2nd half. Back-to-back INTs for TD returns by Sr. FS Jovan
Pratt & Sr. OLB Anthony Shorts (in on 8 stops, 1 L & a defended
pass) put it away. Jr. FB Perrell Jones (5-9 200) ran hard 11 times for 75 yards
and 2 TDs. He's starting to grow on me as he's tough and cocky. On D, the Panthers were
led by Sr. DE Mark Brighter (6-2 245). He went for a sack & 3 other TFLs and
countless QB hurries. He's been a monster all season long. Jones made 2 TFLs from
his ILB position. Sr. NG Damien "Beefy" Waller (5-11 310) was also a
menace at the line with 9 total tackles. He is SUPER strong & deserves looks.
AA's Notes: Hopefully, Franklin will use this tape of Fincher to send to
colleges. He looked special out there. He has 4.4/40 speed and a sturdy build. He also has
those great FB instincts and that knack for making plays. What was most impressive, was
that he never quit and he could have... After a Franklin defender came back to the
sideline after being stiff armed to the ground by a Mastbaum rusher, a Franklin aide
yelled, "if he puts that hand out there again, BITE it." The other funny of that
day came from that Franklin rooters as they chanted at the cheerleaders, "Oh my God,
what is this, look at that girl wit them big @$$ hips." Only in the P.U.B,
baby...
NOV. 6
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Frankford 21, Northeast 0
This Frankford team dominated this one from start to finish in
cruising towards a 21-0 victory. They got it started behind Michael "Big
Play" Washington's (6-0 180, hardly no body fat?) blocked punt for a safety. Mike
also picked an INT and caught a ball for 20 yards. He's indeed a D-I prospect somewhere.
He has already scored 1000 on the SAT and his coaches say that he just may be the team's
best athlete. Some say he's their best overall football player! Sr. FB/DE Jeremy Benson
(5-11 230) was a man on both sides as he carried the ball 17 times for 73 yards and a
score & made 6 tackles with 1 for a loss on D. He's just one of the great handymen who
make for team glue. He should have a fine college career at some level (D-II?). Soph. RB Brandon
Norris had a 37 yard Td run on his own in which he was untouched. He also let loose
some hard pops in the secondary. Speaking of best overall FB player, that title could go
to tough Sr. LB Isaiah "Zeke" Thompson (5-10 200). He seems to be
everywhere all the time. He was in on 9 tackles with a sack & another TFL mixed in
there. Large Sr. DT Raymond Williams was in on 8 stops of his own with one for a
loss. Sr. OLB Ervin Hook (6-3 205) was also impressive with 2 TFLs. He, too is one
of the team's better athletes and has a tremendous upside IMO. Hook is the defensive
captain and has been playing through a broken finger all year long that has only allowed
him to play defense. Sr. LB Zaire Small even chipped in on D with an INT and a TFL.
He is normally strictly the center, but has been playing more defense for the last two
weeks. NE's ground attack produced 29 yards on 28 carries. Super Soph. WR Rockeed
McCarter seemed to be doubled & even tripled a few times all night long. It was
just one of those night for the Vikes. The defensive lead was Sr. LB Warren Bartlett
with 10 stops (1 L). Sr. DE Solomon Isom played his best game on both ends that
I've seen. He had a TFL amongst his 6 hard tackles. Sr. OLB Chris Zukowski had the
same line. He's an extremely hard hitter who deserves some college looks from IIs &
IIIs possibly as a strong safety or weak-side LB.
AA's Notes: Doing this game from the booth with the Puckster was
classic. He was vintage last night. Especially when a report from another paper tried to
beat him for info. The Puckster didn't lie, but he didn't tell him the whole truth either.
You gotta love the Puckster... Frankford has only given up 14 points all season and those
all came at Washington in a 26-14 win. They have been scary to say the least. This is THE
quickest defense that I've ever seen at this level. Each and every one of them could play
somewhere in college at some position, no lie... Something has to be done about these
Divisions. Maybe Penn will be added to the league and the Pub can go to a 3 7 team
Division (Southwest: Bartram, West, Overbrook, U-City, Southern, Bok & Roxborough.
Northeast: Northeast, Washington, Frankford, Lincoln, Edison, Olney & Mastbaum. North
Central: Central, Franklin, Penn, Gratz, Germantown, King & Dobbins) format. Everyone
would get 6 Division games and 3 non-league games before the playoffs. There's no way NE
shouldn't be able to play for a title. They are too good. Maybe things will change in
time. I feel bad for Bartram who is starting to play well that they have to run into a
buzz saw like the Pioneers. Will anyone score on them the rest of the way. I guess time
will tell...

Bok Tech 8, Roxborough 0
This was my first look at both of these squads and boy do I wish it
was on a dry field. I had to watch this one from the the press box at Southern/Bok and it
was hardly easy. Bok won this one behind a strong rushing attack that rang up 210 total
yards. Srs RB Kenny Major (19-89), FB Cedric Green (23-84, TD) & QB Allen
Major (9-50) were the culprits one this sloppy muddy field. The Wildcats also have Srs
WR Hakim Leach & SB Marcelluas Barnes. Both are even more dangerous
threats who haven't really been needed this year that could be keys against Washington
next week. Barnes (6-4 220) was just average on defense today. He did make one tackle for
a loss from his OLB post. He is being eyed by numerous D-Is & I-AAs as a weak-side LB.
Green was the star on D with 9 total stops, most of the walloping variety. Leach broke up
2 passes. FAST Jr. DB Cory Moultrie broke up a pass & made his 5th pick of the
year. He was hurt on the return and never returned. Sr. DB Tyreef Henry added
another pick. Sr. DT Archie Navarre (6-0 300) had 2 TFLs. The State Schools need to
check him out as he'd make for a great nose guard at the next level. The Indians had a
hard time all afternoon getting untracked. Their best player Sr. RB Dante Bryant
(5-11 185) had trouble getting a grip in the mud. He only went 17-49. I really like Sr. QB
Karon Hill (6-1 185), a lefty. He's slick and quick. He also throws a nice ball. He
passed for 83 yards with 75 going to Sr. slot-back Jamal Womack on 4 catches. His
longest a 41 yarder late in the 4th almost caused Bok trouble as he almost broke it for a
score, but Green chased him down and made the play. I also like Sr. LB Kyle Earls
(6-0 200). He had 3 TFLs worth 13 yards. He, too deserves looks at the D-II level. Bryant
played a quarter & a half on D, but still was in on 7 stops.
AA's Notes: Boy I hate rainy, muddy football. I'd really like another look
at both of these squads if for nothing else but to evaluate more of their prospects. Maybe
in the next few weeks... Bryant just may be the 'Boro's best player on O & D. He has a
bright future as he's one of the league's top performers. He has speed, strength & the
FB look. He's also very instinctive & tough... As I said earlier, Bok's Leach &
Barnes are both dangerous threats that may have to be used next week against G-Dub... Bok
converted 4-of-6 3rd down conversions in the 4th quarter and that was the
difference... The comment of the day came from my TS.com colleague "Froggy"
who called out tackles to me. Allen Major ran down the field 19 yards for a 1st down
before slipping, "Frog" commented, "He's still going in the NFL."
NOV. 1
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
Wood 17, Neumann 7
This was a bizarre affair as Neumann sat sat on a 7-0 lead with
ample opportunities to build upon it for two-thirds of the game. Wood accounted for 5
turnovers (3 fumbles, a muffed punt & an INT) during that span and the Vikes had only
accumulated 20 yards total until... That was until star Soph. RB Bryan McCartney
bursted away from the Neumann defense for an untouched 60 yard score to tie the game in
the 3rd. From there it was all downhill for the Buccos turned it over twice themselves en
route to two more Wood scores. The latter was the door shutter as McCartney got away again
untouched this time for 69 yards. He finished the day with 20 carries for 178 yards. He is
very sturdy and gets a pretty hefty workload for a Soph. He MUST be bigger than his listed
165. He's surely stronger, has good closing speed, toughness. In other words, he's a
prospect to watch for the future. Wood's 4-4 defense was one of the more solid ones I've
seen all year long. They made 15 tackles for losses including 8 sacks on the night. Jr.
OLB Bill Cross partied hardy as he was in on 13 total tackles with 5 (3 were
punishing sacks) going for losses of 24 yards. He made his living in the Neumann
backfield. Sr. ILB Michael Kruzits (6-1 225) is a STUD. He finishes guys off like
nobody's business, has serious quickness, a nose for the ball and has that great LB look.
He made 2 sacks along with two other TFLs of his own accounting for 26 yards. The
Villanovas, Rutgers' & Delawares of the world can't go wrong with a guy like Kruzits.
Sr. DT Mark Helmuth made 2 TFLS of his own. Jr. CB John McFadden made a key pick
with a 23 yard return that set up Sr. Kicker Tom Laurich's, a D-I Prospect at
either punter or kicker, 38 yarder to take the lead for good. The Pirates just blew
opportunity after opportunity. Things had to be tough as their best and most versatile
player Sr. Billy Canady was limited due to severe cramping and a case of
nautiousness. He seemed to give everything he had and if not for a questionable penalty
call would have kept them in it late in the 4th with a 42 yard TD catch in which he had
great concentration making the grab over two defenders. That penalty pretty much took the
wind out of the Pirates sails. Sr. runner Rich McMickens carried 14 times for 72
yards and a score. He could have had more if he didn't dance and prance so much. He has to
realize that most times he touches the field that he's the fastest guy out there. Jr.
wide-out Antoine Stout (6-3 180, length makes him look taller) has that look. He is
definitely one to watch. Wood had much respect for him as they doubled him and beat him up
down the field for most of the game. He is a definite big play threat every time the
ball's in the air. Neumann's D was led by Sr. LB Frank Baldino with 6 total stops
(1 for an L) and a fumble recovery. Soph. LB Daniel Chavis made two TFLs, both very
strong hits.
AA's Notes: Does anyone run anywhere near Neumann's stud Jr. G/DT Marques
Slocum (6-6 315) anymore. He seems to not get any action anymore. The one time
McCartney did run near him, he paid for it dearly. Slocum is already being projected as a
tackle at the college level and may still be growing. His father is 6-7/6-8. Michigan
State has said to have been already heavy on his trail... Wood Sr. K/P Tom Laurich
is terrific. He was nailing FGs from 50 yards out in warm-ups. He punted 4 times for an
average of 41 yards. He gets more hang time than M.J on his punts which is where I feel
his future may be... The heat on this day was ridiculous for November 1. It had to be
around 80 degrees at that start. Not my kind of weather for
November..
OCT. 31
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Washington 20, Lincoln 6
This battle of the great presidents was a weird one if I may say so
myself. Lincoln hung around until deep into this game despite not causing one turnover and
being out-gained by nearly 200 yards. It wasn't until the 2:39 mark when G-Dub's 3rd
string runner Jr. Courtney Williams ran off the right tackle an zipped down the
field 36 yards untouched for the score that put it away. Go figure... I was very impressed
with Sr. QB Rich McFillin (6-1 185). He was as sharp as I've ever seen him today
though he only threw for 109 yards going 5-of-14 he was his team's best player today. He
could have easily threw for over 200 yards, but at least 3 of his balls were dropped well
down field and 2 others were very catchable. He has grown on me more and more each time
out. He seems to have that born leader trait and he looks to be rising to the occasion at
the right time right before the playoff stretch. Jr. star runner Jerry Butler
played here with banged up ribs. He still accounted for 132 AP-Yards with 67 rushing, 34
receiving & 31 in returns. I sheepishly wised he was healthy as on a beautiful day
like this he could have went berserk. Talented Jr. TE Dominique Curry (6-3 190)
caught a 3 yard TD pass, but he knows he should have played much better. He's too good to
miss some of the plays on O and D that he missed. He'll have better days. The Eagle D was
led by Sr. CB Mark Banks with 8 total stops and a defended pass. Jr. DTs David
Gonser (TFL) & Stefan Ruff (2 TFLs) were both active and tough. They are
worth watching especially Gonser. For Lincoln, there wasn't much to say. I remember last
week when G-Dub coach Ron Cohen was giving his post game speech saying that
everyone plays their best game against Washington. Sr. MLB Otis Young (6-2 265)
must have heard him load and clear. Young was in on 15 tackles with 2 Sacks & 3 other
TFLs calculating 16 yards. His sacks were on back to back plays. He was a manchild in this
one. Jr. OLB Rory Stallworth made 6 stops with 1 for a loss. Sr. DB Bernard
Franklin defended two passes and made 5 stops. I always think that the Splitters don't
use bulldozing Jr. back Charles Whittington (5-9 255) enough. He'd be my feature
back and get the rock 15-20 times a game. he's just a load to bring down.
AA's Notes: In attendance were former Eagles and current Syracuse Orangeman
Freshman WR Kyle Bell & MLB Jameel McClain. Both are redshirting and
have good chances to start next year. They say that they'd like to get the likes of
Roman's Charron Fisher and West's Curtis Brinkley up to the 'Cuse with them.
Wouldn't that be nice... G-Dub has count 'em 5 O-Lineman hurt. Three are starters. The
most important of the mash unit is Sr. DL Alvin Percival who is probably their best
defender... The comments of the day came from the ref who I didn't get his name.
First he said, "WOO 32 almost crushed me, WOO, Holy Christ." Then he berated a
coach for being past the 30 around the goal line before a Lincoln punt deep in their own
zone and asked, "Are you a coach." The GW aide said, "No, I'm not a
coach." He said, "Well you've been coaching all game, GET DOWN THERE!."
OCT. 30
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Bartram 12, Gratz 9
This one could have went either way, but the Bulldogs offensive
play calls down the stretch gave the Braves the victory. The Braves came from behind after
being down 9-0 midway through the 4th behind little used Sr. speedster Seku
"Canada" Kamara (5-11 190). Kamara has been largely used as the kicker and
punter was the big timer here running 8 times for 101 yards and the game winning score.
Coach Frank "Roscoe" Natale says that Kamara, a Canada native is just
starting to get used to the American game. He is very strong and very fast. He also runs
hard. He is a college prospect believe it or not. A year of Prep school would be great for
this kid as his best days are ahead. He just needs game experience. Sr. FB Adrian
Jackson was also solid running 9 times for 51 yards and a score. On D, the Braves were
led by Sr. FS Gary Carter with 8 total stops and a pass defended. Sr. DT Kennis Jones
made 7 stops of his own. Sr. DE Isiah Cheeseboro (a TFL & a sack). For Gratz,
you have to love Sr. WR Eugene Wright (6-2 175). He caught 6 balls for 89 yards. He
also ran for a 31 yard score which made for the play of the game as Gratz called its
patented reverse and Wright looked like he was shot out of a gun covering about 50 yards
of ground untouched for the score. The most amazing part was after the run as Wright
didn't even look the least bit tired. A strong Juco like Lackawanna (Scranton, PA) would
be perfect as he could play a number of different positions (WR, CB, FS, ect.) at the next
level and move on to even great heights. Sr. QB/K Kyle Whiting was solid. He threw
for 96 yards and kicked a 32 yards field goal. I would have liked to have seen the
Bulldogs go for the field goal on their final drive, but they called for the reverse again
and lost 7 yards on 3rd down from the 14 yard line and with the ball placed in the middle
of the field. This put Whiting out of FG range which could have tied the game and sent it
to OT. Go figure. Once again, I loved Sr. LB Robert "Busy" Littlepage
(5-10 185). He was again his livewire self. NG Kazeem Sanders was also solid with a
TFL & a blocked punt.
AA's Note: On the Bartram sideline for now and beyond was former King and
most recently Chester boss Damond "Smash" Warren. Its good to see Smash
back where he belongs. Its a shame what happened to him down in Chester, but things happen
for a reason and I hope it was to bring one of our good coaches back to the City... It was
great to see Seku Kamara get his light. He's a huge crowd favorite as every time he did
something nice student supporters and the bench players yelled, "Ku, Ku & Yeah
Canada." He could be a serious X-factor next week for the Braves as they'll likely
take on West Philly with a playoff spot on the line... The comment of the day went
to Wright as Bartram Sr. RB Mustafa Crumpton ran a sweep. Wright met him a at the
sideline and gave him a hard pop and then yelled, "man you went down easy. He's light
in the cheeks fellas, WOO! We got him fellas, look he's shakin" On the next play
Crumpton was given the ball again and fumbled... Speaking of Wright, he has been one of
the reasons that has inspired me to start a Football report. That's right, I want to start
something for the Public League (District 12) so these kids can finally start to get their
just due. Maybe 2 issues a year, a Preseason in Mid August and a post season in Mid
December. Wright is one of those guys that really slips through the cracks because of the
lack of exposure the Pub gets. He has great size and speed to play at the next level and
he has the toughness and brass. I think in late November I'm going to send out a trial
report for college coaches. If anyone is interested. Let me know. I want the support of
coaches and players. So I'll need phone numbers (players & coaches), tackling stats,
40 times, bench presses, grades/scores, ect. If anyone is interested email me at
Thurlbough@hotmail.com...
OCT. 25
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Germantown 20, Gratz 14
This is third year in a row covering the Mason's Classic and again
I was not disappointed as again Gratz-G-Town turned into a classic. G-Town won once again
behind the heroics of Sr. FB/LB Omar McDonnaugh (11-56, 11 tackles on D) as he
scored the game winner with 2:10 showing in the 4th. He then ran in the conversion to take
the lead for good. Sr. RB Marcus Walton had his season's best game with 17 carries
for 128 yards and a score. IIs & IIIs should give the speedy Walton some looks. Very
fast So. RB Akeem Johnson set up McDonnaugh's final score with a 38 yard run deep
into Gratz territory. Sr. DB Gabriel Johnson was in on 6 stops and made the pick to
slam the door on the Dawgs. Impressive Jr. DE Don "Florida" Williford was
again impressive making 2 TFLs plus another sack while playing mostly on cruise control.
For Gratz, I liked Sr. RB Vondell "Squeak" Parson. The small back (5-10
170) did much work with 25 carries for 85 yards and a score. Sr. WR Stanly Sims
made some nice plays going for 75 yards on 4 catches and catching a conversion pass.
Effortlessly fast Sr. WR Eugene Wright (6-2 170) was also impressive. He has
serious instincts. More on him later. This was the best I've seen Sr. QB Kyle Whiting
(6-of-11, 114 passing & 5-45 rushing). He made some big plays in and out of the pocket
including a 29 yard Td pass to Wright. Gratz' D was led by Sr. LBs Randall Scott
(game high 12 tackles with 3 for losses) & Robert "Busy" Littlepage
(7 stops). Scott is also a track star and normally gets more touches at fullback. He could
be a good free or strong safety (6-0 195, 4.4/40) at the next level. Every team needs a
guy like Littlepage. He's just a live-wire who makes plays anywhere and everywhere on the
field. Jr. DB Kamal Dutton was in on 8 stops of his own and defended a pass. He
brings many of the same attributes as Littlepage. The Dawgs also boast two strong lineman
in Jr. C/DT Lamont Lee-Edgefield (6-1 275) & Sr. T/DT Brian
"Gooch" Simpkins (6-2 265). Both are prospects.
AA's Notes: Gratz Sr. WR/DB Eugene Wright deserves looks at some level. he
is said to run a 4.3/40 (I believe it). He's also long, rangy and has that gliding way
about him around the field. He'd be a perfect corner or FS IMO somewhere. A strong Prep
school/Juco (Valley Forge, Lackawanna, ect?) would be a good bet for him... McDonnaugh
didn't talk as much as normal in this one. He seemed to be a bit frustrated with his
teammates lack of effort at times. This guy gives 200%, 100% of the time. He is being
recruited at SS, but I still feel that he is a LB. I want him as close to the ball as
possible if I'm a college and weak side LB would be perfect. It'll be interesting how it
all develops... Many former Gratz players were in attendance including some stars from
last year's squad like FB/LB Voncell Harrigan, T/DT Kyle Hatch & star
RB/DB Tyree Watson. Watson is at a Juco in the D.C area not playing at the moment.
He says Temple has been strongly recruiting him...
OCT. 24
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Washington 25, Mastbaum Tech 8
This was my second look of the season at the George Washington
Eagles and mainly at their top-notch Jr. rusher Jerry Butler (5-9 165) and I was
VERY impressed with what I saw. This guys is THE fastest guy I've seen all season long.
However, he's also poised, skilled and tough. He is truly the "Iceman." In this
one, he opened the door by starting the game with a 76 yard punt return for a score and
then slammed the door on the Panthers with a 23 yards TD run. His finishing line was
19-138 plus 89 yards in returns. I also REALLY like Jr. TE/DE Dominique Curry (6-3
190). He has a bright future somewhere on the FB field as he makes plays. G-Dub also was
aided by the Panthers losing 2 fumbles and throwing 5 INTs one going for a 35 yard TD
return by fleet Sr. CB Marcus Banks. Sr. LB Zimeir McCloud led with 10 total
stops (1 for an L) and an INT. Sr. DB Ricardo Rivera was active in the secondary
with an INT and 2 defended passes. He also made some hard hits especially on special
teams. He's another solid prospect. Jr. TE/DE Jon McFillin (6-5 200), brother of
Sr. QB Rich, is also an important player for the Eagles. He also made some hard hits on ST
(1 went for a loss) as the long snapper, but did most of them while also doubling as the
long snapper. He also started and played the whole game at DE. Jr. FS Charles Hughes
made two picks and recovered a fumble. For Mastbaum, I really liked what I saw from Sr. WR
Jovan Pratt (6/72). He went out with guns blazing. He was punished going over the
middle, but he kept coming. Though Jr. QB Markies Tavares (8-of-14, 102) threw for
4 picks not all his fault, he still played tough and made plays. Sr. RB Kenneth King
got the brunt of the workload out of the backfield in going 13-84. Bookend Jr. LBs Perrell
Jones and James Baptiste (both about 5-9 200) were solid. Jones had an INT and
a sack. Baptiste had 7 total stops with a sack as well. Sr. DE Mark Brighter was
pretty much held in check which must have been a key for G-Dub.
AA's Notes: It seems like lineman are going down left and right for the
Eagles. Their top defender Sr. T/DL Alvin Percival (6-3 220) went down early in the
first with a knee injury. He's a strong prospect probably projected to play LB... I walked
into the field along with former G-Dub star and current Maryland feature back Bruce
Perry, who'll likely be drafted in April. I've known Bruce for 13 years now and teased
him about how they G-Dub had a guy just like him these days who may even be faster
(speaking of Butler)... Temple RB coach and former Frankford/Penn State star Blair
Thomas was also in the house no doubt getting another early look at Butler... This
wasn't the crowd that I expected for a Washington home game, but the fans were into it
though there was a biting wind throughout... The Eagles have several strong underclassman
that will make them a definite front-runner in the
future...
OCT. 23
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Central 46, Southern 12
This game wasn't much to talk about. It was typical Pub top dog
versus Pub bottom feeder. The Lancers jumped on the Rams early and often mainly behind 340
Total rushing yards. Sr. FB Quindel "Milky" Ladson was his normal bull
self with 16 carries for 126 yards and 3 TDs (1, 1 & 5). I don't remember him playing
much defense in this one and his services weren't needed for that matter. Prolific Sr. QB Marcel
Quarterman was just average. He didn't even complete a pass. He did run for a nice 18
yard score. On D, I was impressed with Sr. DT Marc Diana (2 TFLs), Sr. DE Okezie
Onylanusi (3 TFLs, 1 a sack) & Jr. OLB Corneilius Bunch (3 TFLs, 2 sacks
worth 33 yards). Sr. OLB Terrance McNeil took an INT 52 yards for a score. The 2nd
team played just about half the game on D. Bunch picked up right where he left off last
week and has become one of Central's prime playmakers on defense. "Double O" is
very intriguing. His dimensions by my eyes are 6-5 235-lbs and he seems to get better
every week. Yet another Lancer late-bloomer. The D-II State Schools should take notice
ASAP as this kid has much room to grow. The Lancers have another late bloomer to check out
in 6-5 308-lb Sr. OT Jordan Champion. Champion has great size and solid strength.
He was said to have missed all of last season with an injury. Folks, its needless to say
that the Lancers are for real and that they are not just the Big Three. The Rams problems
lie in their line play on both sides of the ball. The skill players are fine and would be
that much more dangerous with stronger lines. So. RB Lamone Fox (5-10 190) looked
good once again in rushing 16 times for 87 yards. 6 times he rushed for negative yardage
totaling 39. He also ran back a fumble for 50 yards. This kid has a SERIOUS future. He has
deceptive speed, a strong build, a blind man's instincts and a hawk's vision. I hope that
one day he reaches that vast potential. Jr. QB Jalil Harris is another who suffers
from mediocre line play. Harris is a talent behind center, but just never gets the
necessary time. In this one he went 4-for-10 for 91 yards with a TD (28 yards to Sr. WR Shamir
Kase) and an INT. His normal favorite target Sr. WR Steven Rudd (6-6 180)
reaped the benefits with 3 catches for 63 yards. He made 2 of the circus variety and
should be looked at by the IIs and IIIs as he has good size, hands and athleticism. The
Ram D was led by Kase at LB (7 stops) and Sr. MLB Gerald Terry (10 total stops).
You also have to love the way Jr. DB Amir Ryan plays the game. Sure at times he's a
little wacky, but he lives to hit & plays with fire and that can't be over-stated.
AA's Notes: 5 key Ram basketball players are strapping on the pads as key Fb
players. They are Ryan, Rudd, Harris, Sr. TE/DE Ryan "Poom" Williams
& Sr. DE Shawn Sabb. Or is it Sadd? Southern has new jerseys. Sabb's read Sadd
instead of Sabb... During the game, Southern Basketball coach George Anderson had
several basketball players including its top player Sr. (though he recently reclassified
himself as a Jr. academically and thus will surely do a year of Prep school) PG Antoine
"Doo Dirty" Brown running around the track. Southern does not yet have
Cross-Country as a sport so Anderson uses this as conditioning... I'm saying it again,
this Lancer team is legit! They have several seniors that are legit college prospects at
some level... Finally, it was great to watch Huck and Puck, both in
attendance for a few quarters, argue at halftime. The rivalry is surely heating up. Of
course and as always, "the Puckster" was confusing matters. So what else is
new...
OCT. 18
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Germantown 28, West Phila. 20 (OT)
Omar McDonnaugh Mc-did it again! Once again the 5-11 220-lb Sr.
FB/ILB and in my opinion: The Public League's very BEST player damn near single-handedly
beat a team. This guy is one of the best that I've seen do it as he seems to get more and
more juiced as the game goes on and seems to have more energy in the 4th quarter than he
does in the first, no lie. In this one he ran 11 times for 112 yards and 3 TDs. 9/103 in
the second half with all three TDs also coming after the midpoint. He made 10 total stops
on defense with 2 going for losses. He punished Speedboys on both sides of the ball
especially late. His best two plays were first his mangling of Sr. WR Shelton Ford
as he caught a pass in the flat and saw daylight. Un uh said McDonnaugh as he rushed from
God knows where to cream Ford for a loss of a yard. The second came on the game winner as
he rumbled 10 yards running over & through 4 would-be Speedboy tacklers on his way to
pay dirt in the OT. There was no chance that any one of them were going to bring him down.
He basically tied the Speedboys up, robbed them and left with their women. O's main help
came from tiny Sr. RB Marcus Walton with 19 carries for 85 yards and a score. I
REALLY like Jr. DE Don "Florida" Williford (6-2 235). This guy could be
next year's McDonnaugh, scaled down of course. (smile) He was in on 9 tackles with 5 going
for losses of 28 yards. Three of them were sacks. He had two other QB hurries. This guy is
well put together and very quick/instinctive. He also finishes guys off and lives to hit.
Guys like this don't come a dime a dozen and that's for sure. Jr. LB Robert Fisher
(6-0 205) was also impressive with 3 TFLs (1 a sack). The Speedboys pretty much
played their hearts out and had plenty of opportunities. They are still getting beaten,
but I've liked their competitiveness. Sr. QB Gerald Dove had his ups and downs in
this one as he passed 11-of-25 for 151 yards for 2 TDs. He also threw for two picks. Ford
caught 5 balls for 85 yards and a TD on a short pass play that he wound up breaking
up-field for 65 yards. Sr. WR Jero Taylor saw his first bit of light and caught
three balls for 39 and a score. Sr. RB/CB Elwood Braswood's 75 yard kickoff return
sent the game into OT tied at 20. The Speedboys problem lied in not being able to run the
ball as they cumulated -34 yards as a whole, Unacceptable! Dove was also a defensive
leader with 7 stops (1 for loss). He also broke up as pass and recovered a fumble. Strong
Sr ILBs George Davis (7 stops) & Aikeem Bradshaw (10 total stops, 1 L)
were the other leaders. Both played hurt thoughout. Davis saw no action from early in the
4th on. I also liked the fact that Sr. LB Omar McLaurin (5-11 222) made a strong
appearance coming from the dog house. He made an INT after a tip by Dove and made 4 key
stops with one being for a loss. I expect him to make a bigger impact in the coming weeks.
AA's Notes: For lack of a better term, I must say that Omar McDonnaugh is a
M'fer. He truly is the best the Pub has to offer. Catch his tour of the city now. He even
had many of the West fans and coaches ranting and raving about #44. He tells me that
Michigan State contacted him this week. Temple and Maryland are the other 2 D-Is in
involved at this point, but things are beginning to pick up. He also says that the phone
his been ringing every day... After the game, G'Town coach Mike Hawkins told me
that he couldn't even repeat what he said to Omar on the sideline going into the OT
period. It must have worked eh... In attendance were former Overbrook/West
Catholic/Kutztown standout Virgil Sheppard and former West 01' star FS/LB/DE Deshone
"Stink" Cotton. Cotton may well have been the only Speedboy in the vicinity
that could have brought down McDonnagh. The "Stink Man" used to deliver some of
the fiercest hits you'd ever want to see leaving guys limping and injured. He has had some
trouble the last two years, but is planning on getting his show back on the road by
getting his tapes together and sending them to a few places namely Lackawanna JC
(Scranton, PA) and Stevens Technical (Lancaster, PA). Both are strong FB Jucos. The
Speedboys are becoming a mash unit. Their biggest boy So. T/DT Darren Watson (6-4
310) will be out 4 more weeks with a broken foot. He has much potential... This game was
played in front of a spirited Sat. afternoon crowd with rooters from both ends That's
always a nice site to see...
OCT. 17
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Central 20, Dobbins Tech 7
This contest was not nearly as close as the score indicates as
Central dominated from the 11:48 mark (when Dobbins' super fast Sr. WR/return specialist Aaron
Gary sped to a 75 yard kickoff return) of the 1st quarter on to the end. In
comparison, Central gained a total of 376 yards to the Mustangs 72. The Lancers were led
in this one by their star Sr. QB Marcel Quarterman. "Q" did everything
except the windows today as he went 7-of-13 for 199 yards and 2 scores. He also ran 17
times for 64 yards and a TD meaning he was credited with all three of Central's TDs. The
quick/deceptive fast Quarterman is vastly underrated as a QB (possible I-AA). He's a
precise ball handler and has a strong arm. He also plays with great poise and savvy. He's
two Sr. mates (WR Jordan Anderson & FB/LB Quindel "Milky" Ladson)
are more touted, but this kid has been the 4-1 Lancers MVP to date, period. Anderson (6-2
200) caught two balls for 52 yards. His interest is really starting to peak from many of
the D-Is. Stay tuned. Jr. wing Devon Johnson caught 3 balls for 113 yards. The TD
strikes were to Srs. RB Duane Williams (24 yards) and WR Rodney Sykes (10
yards). On defense, the top Lancer was Jr. OLB Cornelius Bunch (5-11 210).
#42 seemed like he wasn't blocked all game long. That possibly could have been because the
rock hard ILB Ladson (5-9 220) was keyed on though he was still in on 7 stops with one
being a sack. Bunch was in on 11 tackles with 4 going for losses of 27 yards. He also
recovered a fumble and made for the game's most vicious hit when he clobbered QB Maurice
Whitaker (sacked 5 times) causing him to cough up the ball and maybe a few teeth in
the 4th when the 'Stangs still had a chance to stay in it. Quarterman broke up two passes
on defense. While Sr. DT Promarty Martinez recovered two of Dobbins' 4 lost
fumbles. I like the potential of Sr. DE Okezie Onylanusi (6-4 235). He's a late
bloomer of sorts with great size and with much room to grow. The D-IIs should surely give
him a look. For Dobbins it was a long afternoon. No one can claim to have played well on
O. On D, Sr. LB Greg Myers was king being in on 15 Tackles (3 Ls, 2 sacks) and a
recovered fumble. Myers was every in this one and tried hard to stop the high-flying
Lancers alone. The more I see him, the more I like Soph. DT Robert Williams (6-3
290). He's got great size and he's already physical and mean. He made 10 stops before
going down with a foot injury early in the 4th. He even made plays down the field and near
the sideline. That's pretty damn good for a young big 'un. He still has a long ways to go,
but I'd have to imagine that he'll have some big schools come knocking in 2 years. His
partner, Sr. DT Mike Roberts was in on 10 tackles of his own. Sr. FS Ariel
Simmons made a nice pick. He's another prospect to watch. I like Jr. K/P/WR/CB Steve
Sydnor (6-2 180). He'll be a headliner in time. Many times he was all alone with
Anderson and held his own.
AA's Notes: Its always good to get to a Dobbins game. Dobbins has long been
known for their school spirit. Back in my high school days, they were also known for
having the finest girls in the city too... Simmons, Gary & Jr. RB Rashaad
"Reds" Williams form part of one of the City's most feared track teams.
Williams is said to be the fastest of the three and in line for the Jr. Olympics. All
three are under 4.4/40s. Williams and Gary are well under... Central's big three may well
lead them all the way to the title this year, however this year's supporting cast is much
better. They are ultra-aggressive and they tackle people these days and do it very well...
I must commend the coaching job that Coach Frank Conway, Jr. did in this one. He
was masterful to say the least... Both Central and Dobbins have some late-blooming linemen
to watch in Srs T Jordan Champion (listed 6-6 306) & G Fred Pitts (6-3
300). The D-IIs should give both a look... Speaking of linemen, Dobbins' top OL from a
year ago Ronald Blue (6-5 300) was in attendance. He is red-shirting at
Shippensburg at the moment...

PUBLIC LEAGUE
Lincoln 43, Olney 0
This game was a pure D stinker. In my 11 years of watching high
school sports, this Olney Trojan squad just may be the worst team that I've ever seen. Get
this stat, Olney only produced 16 yards of total offense. They had 39 yards in penalties.
The saddest part was the unity of this squad. No one seemed into. The coaches screamed and
all the players did was complain and make excuses. No one was on the same page. Hopefully,
there will be better days. As for Lincoln, slim Sr. RB Bernard Franklin was
terrific in mostly running a power sweep. He rushed 13 times for 142 yards and a score on
the first drive. He also caught a pass for 9 yards, a conversion pass & even had 54
yards in returns, pretty busy day to say the least with 205 All-Purpose yards. I REALLY
like two of Lincoln's others primary rushers, both juniors in Terrell Denson (5-11
210) and Rory Stallworth (5-9 200). Both have super builds and good speed. Both are
also solid on defense and DB and LB. Its safe to say that both also have a future in this
great game. Stallworth (9-69) rushed for a TD and returned and INT 61 yards for a TD. On
defense, the leader is 6-2 265-lb Sr. MLB Otis Young. He was very disruptive all
game long. He made 5 solo stop with two being for losses, 1 of those a sack. He surely has
a future here likely at the D-II level. Jr. DE Joe DeGrazio played a strong game
with 3 TFLs (2 of them sacks). For Olney, the only guys that gave it their all for 48
minutes were Sr MP/DB Platini Michel (9 total stops and an INT) and Jr. DE Denzel
Devertevil (in on many subtle things that didn't show). I felt bad for both of them
that they gave their all and everyone else did not.
AA's Notes: It was a great moment when Lincoln tiny Soph. RB Joseph
Franklin ran for a 3 yards score late in this one. He is the next in line of the
Franklin family... Lincoln has a host of quality Jrs. Denson and Stallworth are both solid
college prospects, but the best is probably 5-9 250-lb battering ram Charles
Whittington. I think his future could be at tailback, no lie. If this were my team, he
would surely see more touches though Lincoln has 4 quality backs. Nice problem to have
eh... Something has to be done at Olney. This was one of the saddest only in the Pub
moments that I've ever had to witness. With all the athletes in their building, which at
one time or another has been the biggest high school in the state, a better football team
than this must be fielded. Only time will tell, but this can't continue forever. I just
hope its more on the sooner side than the later...

AA's NOTES
We are already almost halfway through the season so I decided that
this was a good time to do my first notes column and I must start with the colorful
Neumann Sr. do-it-all Billy Canady. As I've stated earlier, he's my favorite player
to watch in the city. No matter what nature says, he ain't 5-7 in my book. He's not 5-10
either as he plays more like he's 7-5 and he'll tell you all about it. What a kid... Is it
me or is the Pub becoming a passing league? In almost every Pub game I've been to this
year, it seems that the coaches are making more calls to the air than ever. With athletic
QBs like NE's Marcellus Sammons, West Philly's Gerald Dove, Central's Marcel
Quarterman & Frankford's long-limbed Jr. lefty Lamont Brown have stood out
while others like Jrs. Germantown's Brandon Cuff, Southern's Jalil Harris
& Mastbaum's Markies Tavares are all small with strong arms. This is great time
to be a receiver in the Pub... This week in the Pub is Big game Friday as this Friday
could make for a tell-tale sign for the entire season as in Div. C Mastbaum comes to King,
in Div. B Central travels to Dobbins and Frankford takes on Washington in Div. A. This
will be an interesting weekend... Lastly, in my travels this year I've noticed many strong
underclassman in the city. Philadelphia will be fertile for the next 2-3 years. Names like
Slocum, Butler, Slaton, McPherson, Norris, Fox, McCarter, Maddox, Hand, ect. will
prove to be prominent in the next few years and these aren't the half of it... Well until
this weekend...

CATHOLIC LEAGUE BLUE
Neumann 64, Dougherty 0
This game was in a word, abortion. Disgrace, an understatement. It
seemed that Neumann jumped on the Cards early and the Cards simply just laid down. I don't
have much to say here except that Sr. All-Purpose back Billy Canady had a career
game going for 265 All-Purpose yards (9-181 Rushing, 1/7 Rec., 3/77 on returns) and 6 TDs
(4 Rush, 1 Rec., 1 Return). The 5-10, 165-lb Canady is arguably the toughest performer in
the City and is my personal favorite to watch. He has that George Jefferson swagger
and cockiness that makes an athlete a winner. There really isn't much else to talk about.
I hope CD has better days. There is no way that they are this bad. This was unbelievable
and very hard to watch.
AA's Notes: Neumann's Head Coach Ed "Bubby" DiCamillo still
breathes fire despite being on crutches these days. The whole first half, he called the
game from the stands. The second half, he came down from his perch to get on his boys. His
best comment came after Jr. FB Michael Evans dropped a pitch. Evans came back to
the sideline claiming to be dizzy from the play before, "Bubby" said, "Yeah
Evans, you are dizzy alright. Dizzy for dropping that pitch." This guy is a true
football coach... Its always great to go to Neumann as a good friend of mine Will
Ferguson is now on their staff primarily as one of the freshman coaches. He's a recent
grad of Hampton University and has always been a gridiron guy to the core. With the nature
of the this affair, we had a chance to even reminisce about some of the good old times.
One being a funny story about current Dallas Cowboy lighting fast rookie return specialist
Zuriel Smith, a guy we came in with at Hampton. Its great to see a good friend and
person beginning to live one of his dreams...
OCT. 10
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Washington 14, Northeast 7
This was the game of the year in the Pub thus far this season with
a lot of hard-hitting action, emotion and excitement. The Eagles controlled this one early
on, but missed two prime scoring opportunities with costly mistakes keeping the Vikes
around being only down 7-0 at the half. The second half belonged to the Vikes as they went
to their newly implemented "Ace" Offense which features only one back, normally
Sr. FB Warren Bartlett with a wing or two TEs and 2 wide-outs and makes for much of
underneath short stuff. This surely threw G-Dub for a loop as NE has long been a
smash-mouth running team. It also was the coming out party for Sr. QB Marcellus Sammons
as he put the ball in the air 26 times completing 17 for 174 yards. He also ran 7
times for 36 yards including the 29 yard score to tie the game. This run was ALL heart
& desire as he took at least 3 hard hits, but was not to be denied in getting to pay
dirt where he eventually collapsed from cramps. He was easily this game's star. The Eagles
answered by quickly marching down the field on the next drive ending with Sr. QB Rich
McFillin running one in from 6 yards out which turned out to be the game winner.
Though Northeast contained superstar Jr. RB Jerry Butler (18-46, a TD), you could
still see that he has a Big Time future. He still has special possibilities and I surely
see coach Ron Cohen's comparisons to former G-Dub and current Maryland Sr. standout Bruce
Perry. Butler is THE fastest kid I've seen all year, even slightly faster than Egan's Steve
Slaton, no lie! Once he adds 10-15 more lbs of muscle to his 5-9 168-lb frame which
always seems to happen at G-Dub between Jr. and Sr. year he'll be that much more
dangerous. It seems like Butler moves a step, maybe two steps faster than everyone else
out there and is a threat to break one whenever he touches the ball. Jr. RB Jeremiah
Pitt is also a quality back for the Eagles. Its just a shame that he has to share time
with Butler. He'd start for most other squads in the Pub. On D, the Eagles were led by Jr.
DE Dominique Curry (6-3 185). He seemed to make many subtle plays while making 7
stops with 1 for a loss and making a key bat down at the line. Curry is very athletic and
much stronger than he looks. He has some great days ahead. He is a second generation
athlete being the son of Dobbins Tech All-Time Basketball player Dominique Stephens.
I also liked Sr. DL Alvin Percival (6-3 220), a North Catholic transfer. His future
is probably at LB, but he plays hard and tough on line and even makes many of his plays on
the outside. He made 7 stops of his own. Super-fast Jr. DB Mikal Sabree, a Franklin
transfer, also made 7 tackles. All of them were key. Jr. DT Stefan Ruff, who is a
sleeper and Sr. LB Zimier McCloud both made 2 TFLs. For NE, besides Sammons
Sr. WR Julian Alicea made 9 catches for 77 yards. He relentlessly went over the
middle and was the focal point of the O. That was probably because STUDLY Soph. WR Rockeed
McCarter had trouble getting open. He still made 5 catches of his own for 58 yards.
His best catch was one of the plays of the game on 4th & 10 of the Final NE drive.
Rock' was tripled this time, but Sammons still threw him the ball. A 4th defender even
came over as he caught the ball in stride and was crunched by all 4 Eagles simultaneously
and held on to the ball for a 23 yard pick up. This was a man's play that you normally see
on Sunday to say the least. FS Sammons, MLB Bartlett, hard-hitting Sr. LB Chris
Zukowski & Sr. MG Paul Franklin (2 TFLs, 1 a sack) led the defense. I feel
that Sr. C/T/DT Sam Chhat is very under-rated. He posted 6 solo stops including a
sack of his own. He's also playing Center while incumbent Peter Zoltowski still
sits out. Tiny Sr. CB Dwayne Gay (8 stops) was also very important as he seemed to
always get to Butler just in the knick of time. Jr. DE Solomon Isom was also
impressive.
AA's Notes: This was a very spirited game with a great crowd. I love
attending Football games like this. You felt the passion from beginning to end... After
one of McCarter's catches, Assistant Coach Phil Gormley turned to me and said,
"They are double teaming him and he's only a 15-year old Soph. That's scary."
He's damn right! That is scary when G-Dub has that much respect for a kid with their speed
and skill. Rock's one of the best that I've seen strap on the pads all season long...
Former Frankford/Penn State All-American and current Temple assistant Blair Thomas
was in attendance. No doubt, he must have liked what he saw from many players on the
field... Next week's big one will pit Frankford at G-Dub. Should be interesting as this
could decide if anyone at all can play with the Pioneers in the
Pub...
OCT. 10
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Frankford 40, Lincoln 0
This one was a laugher as the machine that is the Frankford
Pioneers steamrolled an undefeated Lincoln squad like they were chop liver. The biggest
topic of conversation was that the Railspitters earned the first 1st down of the season on
the Pioneers eventually getting 4 for the game. Frankford racked up 362 yards of total
offense. I really like Sr. Multi-Purpose back Arnold Mullins. He had a 93 yard TD
run called back, but was still impressive otherwise. He is a team leader to say the least
and runs a 4.3/40 to boot. He has a future in either track or FB. Jr. QB Lamont Brown
(6-3 185) is also extra impressive. The rangy lefty throws a nice ball and has great
dexterity. He went 7-for-12 for 180 yards and a TD. Sr. wide-out Michael Washington
caught 3 balls for 104. Sr. TE Joe Farina caught the Td for 21 yards. On D, I
really liked Sr. DT Henry Smith (6-2 280). He's strong and aggressive. Tag-teaming
with Sr. DT Raymond Williams (6-0 320) makes them even more dangerous. They split
12 tackles evenly. One of Smith's went for a loss. Sr. LB Isaiah "Zeke"
Thompson (8 stops, 1 a sack) makes his living off of heart and desire. He was in on
many plays. Washington made two TFLs from his OLB position. Nobody except Jr. FB Charles
Whittington (5-9 250) played well for Lincoln on offense. Though he still has some
kinks to work out, he is one of the Pub's best Jrs. His future just may be at tailback!
The defense was led by Srs DE Otis Young (6-2 265) & DT Phil Endicott (6-1
230) and strong Jr. LB Terrell Denson. All were in on multiple tackles.
AA's Notes: Frankford's Sr. WR/OLB Ervin Hook (6-3 205) sat this one
out with a broken finger. He should be back next week for the showdown with G-Dub. He's
one of the team's best athletes and a fine prospect... I don't know if anybody will be
able to beat this Pioneer squad if they play like this. They still haven't beaten a proven
squad, but they are Soooo... confident and so tough. They really execute too. They are
legitimately one of the top 3-4 teams in the city... Frankford is another one of my
favorite stops on the trail during FB and BB. There's always a lot of love here and its
long been one of my favorite sections of the city...
OCT. 3
NON-LEAGUE
Northeast 9, Mastbaum Tech 0
The marquee game of the weekend in the Pub turned to be not so
marquee after all as it was more defensive struggle than excitement. The Vikings dominated
this very good Panther squad for large portions of this one en route to a shutout. An
early 43 yard burner from Sr. QB Marcellus Sammons to STUDLY, So. WR Rockeed
McCarter was the difference maker. The Vikings used 5 ball carriers to rush for 165
yards led by Sr. FB Warren Bartlett's 12-48. Sammons also led the way on defense
with 6 stops and an Interception. Bartlett was in on two TFLs. He's one hell of a Middle
LB! Sr. MG Paul Franklin also impressed with 2 TFLs. For the Panthers, rushing
yards were hard to come by. Sr. RB Anthony "Bermuda" Shorts, who has been
on a tear rushed 7 times for no yardage. He'll have better days for sure. Jr. QB Markies
Tavares went 6-for-18 for 104 yards. He threw 1 pick. Sr. WR Jovan Pratt caught
4 balls for 76 yards. He was pretty impressive. The Panther D was led by Sr. DE Mark
Brighter (6-2 245) with 3 TFLs, 1 a sack. As I said earlier, he just may be a 1-AA
prospect. Jr. LB Perrell Jones (5-10 200) was in on 11 tackles including a sack.
Strong, Sr. two-way tackle Damien Waller was impressive on both lines. Rangy, Jr.
CB Sherrod Evers (6-2 165) was very active with a game high 12 total stops. While
his partner Sr. CB Steven Gilbert made 6 total and had a pick. It'll be interesting
to see what NE does next week in the night time showdown with G-Dub. I can't wait.
AA's Notes: NE Sr. C Peter Zoltowski (6-4 330) is out for the next
2-3 weeks with a partially torn ACL while he waits for a special brace to play on. He'll
be a key addition as Zoltowski is receiving widespread D-I/I-AA feelers... Sr. MLB Warren
Bartlett (5-11 230) says he already has a qualifying SAT score of 880 and will take it
again next week. he likes 1-AA power Georgetown a lot. They NEED to give him a strong
look... I know that NE's philosophy over the years has been run, run, run, but this year
and for the next few years they'll have to find a way to get SURE D-I prospect Soph.
wide-out Rockeed McCarter to ball. He's 6-4 190-lbs, super athletic and has very
good speed (at least 4.5/40). Maybe some students can campaign during this election season
to "Get Rock the rock..." I asked small, but good Sr. WB/DB Dwayne Gay
(5-4 155) if he was of any relation to my childhood sweetheart Tiffany Gay, he
said, "no." I asked if he was sure. He said positive. I said, "DAMN!"
I wish he was so I could send her a message. Maybe she reads my stuff, never know...

Simon Gratz 8, Southern 0
Now this was Football weather! Finally, we are over Indian summer
and its feeling like Fall. I was very impressed with this Southern squad even in defeat.
They are surely moving in the right direction as Coach Bill Edger is receiving much
more help these days and it shows. They gave the Bulldogs all they could handle on their
home field in this one. The Dawgs won this one behind the dual rushing attack of Srs RB Vondell
"Squeak" Parson (14-89) & first year player FB Robert
"Busy" Littlepage (15-106). Littlepage made the most of an opportunity to
start at Fullback as normal starter strong/fast Randall Scott was out with a hip
pointer. He ran hard and tough. The lone TD was scored on a perfectly thrown 23 yard
strike from Sr. QB Kyle Whiting to his favorite target ultra-fast Sr. WR Eugene
Wright (3/39), who effortlessly got behind two defenders. The Bulldog "D"
was led by very strong line-play with Sr. DE Jeff Pompey (a sack) & DTs Sr. Brian
"Gooch" Simpkins (strong/active overall play) and Jr. Lamont
Lee-Edgefield (a sack). CB Ryan Harris (in on 6 stops) made the game's most
important play by luckily picking off a sure TD in the end zone mid-way through the 4th
with Southern deep in Gratz territory. For the Rams, I left very impressed with the
two-way efforts of Sr. FB/MLB Gerald Terry (6-0 210), Jr. WR/CB Amir Ryan
(6-1 185) & So. RB/OLB Lamone Fox (5-11 180). Terry, a 4-year starter, was in
on 9 tackles and did a great job blocking on offense and caught a key 12 yard pass in the
final Ram drive. Ryan, known for being a D-I Basketball prospect, played hard and tough.
He made some tough stops and gave maximum effort at ALL times in making 7 tackles and
breaking up a pass. Fox has a chance to be very good. He ran for 52 yards and led in
tackles with 10 total stops. He's one to watch. He plays with a lot of juice. Sr. OLB Shamir
Kase made 6 tackles with one for a loss. Sr. DE Ralph Digneo made 2 TFLs.
AA's Notes: Southern Sr. TE/DE Ryan Williams, also a solid player on
the hardwood, has one of the coolest, yet longest nicknames ever. In South Philly every
one calls him "Monster" or "Poom," short for "Monster Poom-Poom
Cincinnati." To quote Ted, I don't make these up. I just hear as I go along... Gratz
Sr. FB Robert "Busy" Littlepage is a huge crowd favorite. All game long you
heard from the crowd, "Give the Ball to Busy." He seemed to feed off of it
too... Two other key ball players are keys for the Ram Football team in Jr. QB Jalil
Harris (5-11 175) and his favorite target 6-6 180 Sr. Wide-out Steve Rudd
(3/39). Both are prospects in FB. Rudd has a future at some level... Its great to still
have Coach Leonard Poole on the sideline. He's good for 3-4 quotables a game...
Gratz is always one of my favorite stops on the trail. During this stop, I turned around
and saw my girlfriend in the stands. She must have been spying on me (Smile). She's a
Gratz alum to the core...

NON-LEAGUE
Dobbins Tech 20, West Phila. 6
Another day in the Pub. For large stretches of this game the
Speedboys got the best of the Mustangs and seemed to be able to match them speed for speed
and tough for tough despite the fact that they have low numbers. The biggest differences
were mainly fundamental and that's why Dobbins came out on top in this one though it
wasn't easy. This one was put away late by an Arial Simmons (6-2 180) INT and 65
yard TD return with 5 seconds remaining. Simmons, a fleet Sr. WR/FS (and track star)
seemed to want to run out the clock, but saw an opening, aided by a vicious (AND I MEAN
VICIOUS!) block by Sr. DT Mike Roberts (3 tackles all for losses) on West Sr. T/DE Samir
Hill (6-5 230). The top Mustang on the day on both sides of the ball was Sr. RB/LB Greg
Meyers (5-11 195). He rushed 16 times for 92 yards and a score on offense and made 11
total tackles with 4 going for losses of 24 yards. Three were sacks. Meyers has the look
of a strong safety at the next level with good speed, strength & punishing hits. I-AAs
and IIs need to take a look. Sr. LB Brian Walls was also impressive with 7 Tackles
(seemed like more) with two for losses. Large So. DT Robert Williams (6, 1 for a
loss) has some promise because of his size, build (probably 6-3 290) and aggressiveness.
Small Sr. LB Kenny Robinson (in on 6 stops) gets the desire award. He must go 5-4
170, but he hits and plays hard. He scored Dobbins first TD as well. The BEST player on
the field in this one was Speedboy Sr. QB/CB Gerald Dove (6-0 185). He has that special
quality about him. His best position seems to be wherever you want to play him
(QB/RB/WR/CB/FS) and he is such a warrior. I don't remember him being out for more than 2
plays the whole game. He went 11-for-21 for 181 yards passing including a 39-yard score to
Sr. MP-Back Elwood Braswell (7 catches for 83 yards) after it was tipped by
Simmons. Dove even made 7 tackles with one for a loss on defense. He once had to just lay
down on the sideline for a few before going back on the return team. I'm sure he got a
good sleep last night. With his 4.4 plus speed, great athleticism and super toughness, the
sky is the limit for this soaring Dove. Stay tuned... Sr. WR Sheldon Ford (5-11
195) was also extra impressive making 3 catches for 86 yards. Two of them of the circus
variety. He has really bulked up and almost as fast as Dove. The Speedboy LBs were strong
in Srs. George Davis (6-1 205) & Aikeem Bradshaw & So. Atland
Williams (In on 7 stops, 1 for a loss). Davis and Bradshaw battled through injuries
and made plays all game long. Davis has down the road potential as he is said to be the
team's strongest player as part of the 300-lb bench press club. He's surely a prospect.
AA's Notes: This Speedboy team just may be the most dangerous team in the
Pub. They are super fast and super tough. They will be a tough out for anyone. Their
fastest player is Jr. WR Mike Ellis, a transfer from Miami, FL. The Gold-toothed
one is being worked into things slowly, but could prove to be a key at some point... This
group of Mustangs is no slouch when it comes to speed either though it'll be interesting
when Sr. WR Aaron Gary, one of the team's headliners starts to play a bigger role.
Right now he is being relegated to strictly returns duty, but he'll play a larger role in
the offense. He was said to have gotten a late start. He zipped down the sideline for an
untouched 64 yard Punt return that was called back by a block in the back... It can't be
understated how special Gerald Dove is. If you have the chance, get out to one of
his games ASAP. You will not be disappointed... I pray that West Jr. TE Charles
Henryhand is OK as he went down in the 2nd Qtr. with what may be a dislocated hip.
There was a 20-minute delay while the ambulance was on the premises... I always have a
good time when I go to West Philly seeing old friends and familiar faces. AD Pat
Cassano is one of the best. Many of the kids call her mom. She has thousands of sons
and daughters... Former Basketball star 6-10 Gerald Jordan (92' Morgan
St./Pittsburgh) was in attendance. He plans to be a key part of the basketball program
with former teammate Shawn Harvey this year... Lastly, I must commend the job that trainer
Marcus Owens (Temple Sports Medicine) is doing. This guy has been assigned 6 FB
schools and seems to be at 3 places at one time. He's been everywhere that I've been this
week...

NON-LEAGUE
Germantown 24, John Bartram 20
This was a very entertaining albeit wacky affair on a hot Indian
Summer afternoon in Southwest Philly as there were trick plays and blocked kicks and a
combined 17 penalties for 86 yards, a down right ugly affair to say the least. "The
G" came out on top behind the inspired crunch time play of Sr. LB Omar McDonnaugh
(5-11 218), Mr. Trash Talk himself. McDonnaugh recorded 8 of his 10 tackles in the 2nd
half, all of them key. Three of his stops came for losses totaling 9 yards. He did it
while flexing his muscles and have a going dialogue with the Bartram bench and crowd. Is
there anyone more entertaining than this guy? He basically made what was a high scoring
affair in the first half his personal defensive showcase in the 2nd. The funny thing about
him is that when he is playing, he just may be the Pub's best, no lie. He just knows what
to do to get a W and impose his will on the game better than anyone. The Bears other key
performer was precocious Soph. RB Akeem Johnson (4-86, 2TD). He took his first
carry to the house for a 68 yard untouched score. He then ran for the game winner in the
3rd, a 5 yard scamper. Johnson is very similar to Frankford's Soph. dynamo Brandon
Norris. I'd like to see them in a race. This guy is surely one to watch for future
purposes. Jr. QB Brandon Cuff (6-for-17, 88 yards, TD, INT) did a good job
considering he's playing with a green group of wide-outs. He throws a pretty nice ball and
many times his guys weren't ready for it. I really liked two other Bear youngsters in
Sophs: LB Andre Fisher (5-10 190) & DE Don Williford (6-2 235). Both are
very, very aggressive and have high field IQs. Williford has the look of a strong prospect
down the road. Sr. two-way tackle Dennis Hill (6-2 325) has much potential. He
could be a fine guard at the next level. The top Marooner on this day was Sr. FB/LB Adrian
Jackson (5-10 225). He ran for 52 yards on 6 carries including one of the day's most
impressive plays coming on a 31 yards score as he stiff armed Fisher on his way home. On
the other end, he made 5 solo stops with 1 for a loss. Fast, Sr. RB Mustafa Crumpton
had some success early on, but was held in check later. Sr. DT Kennis Jones was
once again impressive as was Sr. DE Isiah Cheeseboro (6-3 215). He made plays all
over the place en route to his 6 tackles (3 for losses and a pass defended. He has much
upside. The Wave had many chances in the 4th to take this one, but squandered opportunity
after opportunity. Case in point, one their final drive after Sr. QB Gary Carter
connected with Jr. WR Joel Ermilus for 11 yards and a 1st down on 4th down, Carter
went 4 and out from the G'Town 29 with 3 of his balls being perfectly thrown and dropped.
AA's Notes: Massive Bartram two-way tackle Julian Jackson (6-5 325 at
least that's what he is trying to sell me) says that he is putting his promising singing
career on hold as he is seeing some light on the field these days. He isn't bad either as
he must have dropped 30-40-lbs from last year... I had a feeling that this day wouldn't go
Bartram's way after early in the game Ermilus made a INT at the 50, returned it to the 25
and then was stripped by RB Marcus Walton who ran 75 yards for the game's first
score... I must commend the officiating crew of head linesman John Perry, back
judge James Smith & linesmen Al Gardner, Denny Williams & Mike
Downs for doing a super job in this one. The one positive that I've already seen with
the new PIAA rules is that the Pub schools don't get cheated with the clock anymore as
this game went almost 2 and a half hours... Finally, is there anyone on the planet like Omar
McDonnaugh. He talks a lot of smack, but boy can he back it all up. He has learned how
to win games mentally and that's scary. He's SO fun to watch! He even made for the
line/comedy of the day as he claimed himself to be and I quote, "I'm the best thing
since Superman, the closest thing to Batman." This is what Prep sports
is all about, seeing tomorrow's stars today...
SEPT. 20
NON-LEAGUE
Mastbaum Tech 14, John Bartram 0
Finally, the Pub season was able to begin action as the Panthers
and Marooners got after on this steaming hot September Saturday morning. The very
experienced Panthers (30 returning Varsity players) controlled this one throughout en
route to a good victory over a very inexperienced Bartram team that'll surely improve as
the year goes on. Sr. RB Anthony "Bermuda" Shorts was a pleasant surprise
as he ran for 84 yards on 9 carries and a TD. He had another called back by a clip. Shorts
was very hard to bring down once his legs got going and will only get better as the year
goes on. Sr. TE/DE Mark Brighter (6-2 245) was the top Panther today. He seemed to
be in on plays everywhere. He was king on defense as he made 5 stops with 4 going for
losses, 3 being punishing sacks. He also blocked a punt in the 4th quarter that set up TD
#2. On offense, he made a tough 3rd down catch in traffic for a 1st down in which he was
hit hard, but got up and did his Jeremy Shockey impression. Just a very good
overall effort for Brighter. Strong Sr. DT Damien Waller made 5 strong tackles
himself. The deadly combination of Jr. QB Markies Tavares (6-for-7, 51 yards) &
Sr. WR Jovan Pratt (4/32), the Pub's best wide-out, was just average in this one.
Tavares was bothered by a bum shoulder and sat out a few series. He should be O.K. This is
a very strange Maroon Wave Club as they are ironically without any experienced skill
position players which is almost unheard of for them. Their Big 4 are all strong defenders
in Srs: DT Kennis Jones (6-2 275), DE Marcus Macklin (5-11 245) & LBs Jeremy
Welzcher (6-1 225) and Adrian Jackson (5-10 225). Jones (5 tackles) is this
team's best prospect as he is strong, lean & mobile. He is also said to be an A-B
student who just may be a 1-AA caliber prospect at DT or possibly even DE. Welzcher (6
tackles, 3 for losses), another intriguing prospect, Jackson & Macklin (6 tackles, 4
Ls, 1 a sack) all have bloodhounds noses and are hard hitters. I did like the brass &
toughness of Sr. QB Terrance "Chooch" Murray (5-11 190). He got clobbered
a few times, yet still wasn't rattled in his first varsity game. he will be the permanent
starter at QB. Its good to see another kid I watched grow up do well.
AA's Notes: Mastbaum Sr. C Jermaine Booker (6-2 240), who is
receiving 1-AA interest, is out another 2 to 3 weeks with a broken wrist... I love the
versatility of Jr. Multi-purpose/OLB/K David Pough. He is a possible future D-I
prospect though I can't say at what position. He just does a bit of everything. He booted
two strong PATs and just may be one of the City's best kickers... Its great to watch how
coach John Murphy, one of the elder statesmen in the City coaching fraternity,
still gets after his kids like a young buck. He's much fun to watch at work... Many of the
Leach family was in attendance to watch reserve Sr. two-way lineman Brandon Leach
(6-3 275). He is the brother of former Bartram and current Texas A&M PG Bobby
and last year's Bartram star Bryant and the cousin of current Bok speedster Hakim.
Both the latter were in attendance along with the positive influence of the family Salim
who is Hakim's brother. He's a solid gold guy who supports his family to the end and works
tirelessly to steer them in the right direction.
SEPT. 3
CITY FOOTBALL PREVIEW
Ah, September is finally here and its time for AA to take hs show
to the Football field and looking inside it seems the more the years change and the older
I get, the more things actually stay the same. The Powerful Hawks of St. Joseph's Prep are
again on the prowl as they sport 3 D-I Sr. Prospects in speedy CB Danny Jones (5-8
170), quick DE Matt Parkhurst (6-4 245) & fierce ILB Brian Tracz (6'2
240). These 3 leaders along with a host of underclassmen are set to once again take the
city by storm. They've already handled the powerful Bethlehem Catholic and now barring
they follow the rules of the teachers strike will take on 2 more national powers in
Brooklyn's Poly Prep and Baltimore's Gilman School. That's pretty expeditious before
taking on the competition in the hard-hitting CL Red... Last year's runner up, Roman
Catholic looks to challenge with the likes of 2 D-Is of their own in athletic lefty QB Andre
Sloan-El (6-3 185) & 6-4 240-lb monster pass rusher Charron Fisher, who has
already garnered 5 division I offers for his exploits... O'Hara sports quite possibly the
league's top Sr. prospect in strong/fast Sr. RB Anthony Heygood (6-2 215) plus a
host of other talents... LaSalle should also be a factor as they have a lot back from a
very balanced squad in 2002... Father Judge plays the wildcard with a fun and gun passing
attack with many options on the end of it that will always prove to be dangerous.
The head of the Blue Division is none other than West Catholic's
franchise rusher Curtis "Boonah" Brinkley as he is set to shatter many of
the City's rushing records this year and garner a scholarship to a Division I school.
He'll have many options come February's signing day... Egan's Jr. rusher Steve Slaton (5-11
190) boasts some of the same skills and more speed (clocked at 4.3 in the 40). However,
they lost their heart and soul last year which could prove much on Slaton's broad
shoulders... Carroll's boasts 3 straight titles and balance of talent/confidence that
could make for a 4th. McDevitt is young, but boasts another top notch runner in the
gazelle-calved Jr. Lamar McPherson (5-11 195). He is a sleeper of sorts, but I feel
he could break out in a major way this year... The wildcard here is St. John Neumann as
they bring much size and speed to the table and are capable of beating anybody on any
given day. The Size: This comes in the form of star Jr. two-way lineman Marques Slocum
(6-5 315). This mean, chiseled big'un is IMO the city's top overall prospect for down the
road purposes. Sr. two-way tackle Joe Sandefur (6-4 315) is normally right beside
him on both lines. The speed comes in the form of two speedster Multi-purpose backs in
Srs: Billy Canady (5-8 165) & Richard McMickens (5-11 180). Both run a
4.4/40 give or take and can cause fits for their opposing defenses. The brassy Canady
particular may play a more important role than anyone on this squad.
The Pub will be very balanced at the top and the bottom which could
make for a fun season. Frankford is the top dog once again after winning the Title last
year and returning 7 starters on a stingy defense and 5 on offense. There are 5 Srs
standouts in tough-as-nails DE Jeremy Benson (5-11 230), strong/savvy ILB Joe
Farina (6-2 225), athletic OLB Ervin Hook (6-3 200), large two-way tackle Raymond
Williams (6-1 320) & speedy Multi-purpose back Arnold Mullins (5-9 165).
However, the best of this bunch is freakish Soph. tailback Brandon Norris (5-9
175). This guy took the city by storm last season with his untouched rushes to the house
and just may have been this team's best player by the seasons end. It'll be interesting to
see his progress... As always, it won't be easy in Division A as Washington is still a top
contender while both Northeast and upstart Lincoln are a year older and better. G-Dub
boasts effortlessly FAST Jr. sprinter Jerry Butler (5-9 170), the winner of the 100
& 200 meters in the Pub track championships last spring. They also boast speedy Sr.
RB/CB Marcus Banks (5-9 170) & Srs. LBs in Ricky Rivera (5-10 185) and
North Catholic transfer Alvin Percival (6-2 225)... Northeast boasts two Division I
prospects in Srs. FB/LB Warren Bartlett (5-11 225) and C/DT Peter Zoltowski (6-5
325). They also have another one of the city's top Sophs. in budding superstar end Rockeed
McCarter (6-4 190). Rock' snagged 2 TDs as a Frosh. There are a multitude of returnees
and other depth at other positions on Algon Ave... Lincoln boasts a strong line and
good speed which could make for some noise led by two-way lineman Srs Otis Young
(6-2 270) & Jason Smith (6-4 350).
Division B, was the toughest in the league last year will not be as
strong, but the balance will be even better as all 5 teams should be competitive. Central
has the most returnees of all the other teams and should be the favorite, but Dobbins was
said to be very impressive in the off-season. Central's big 3 are Seniors: mobile QB Marcel
Quaterman, dangerous/versatile Wing/End Jordan Anderson (6-2 200) &
punishing FB/LB Quindel "Milky" Ladson (5-10 200). All may receive 1-AA
recruiting interest. Anderson already has offers. The lines are also said to be bigger and
stronger... Dobbins lost all of their top dogs, but have some good replacements in Srs
vicious RB/LB Greg Meyers (6-0 195) & speedy WR/DB Aaron Gary (6-0 175)
to lead the charge... Gratz may have lost the most from last year, but they are still a
tough competitive bunch year in and year out with talent, size & speed returning in
abundance. They'll be led by Sr. runner Vondell Parson (5-11 175)... Germantown was
wiped out by 23 Srs, but does return some talent from varsity and a strong JV including
probably the league's top Sr in D-I prospect hard-hitting/trash-talking cocky FB/LB Omar
McDonnaugh (5-11 215)... Even Roxborough looks to have some promise with many
returnees at the skill positions and some size up front. They are led by the league's
biggest sleeper strong/fast Sr. runner/hitter Dante Bryant (6-1 190).
Division C should be ran away with by Mastbaum as they only lost 5 key
players. They return the Pub's top receiver in Sr. Jovan Pratt. Srs: C Jermaine
Booker (6-2 240), strong DT Damien Waller (5-11 280), savvy TE/DE Mark
Brighter (6-2 245) & Jr. Multi-purpose David Pough (6-1 185) are all fine
prospects among many others... Franklin is always a tough bunch. They return the Pub's INT
leader in Sr. FS Darrell Fincher (5-9 175, 9 INTs in 2002). This is always a
speedy/athletic bunch with many good players... King lost much of its personality, but
returns a strong line anchored by Sr. two-way tackle Kyle Patillo (6-3 280)...
Edison will live and die by an talented/ambitious group of Juniors maybe building toward
the future... Overbrook will look for their line to lead their skill
guys.
In Division D, Bok is head an shoulders above the rest with a strong
group of key returnees. Their top dog is one of the Pub's best in versatile TE/LB Marcellaus
Barnes (6-4 215), a D-I prospect. They also sport a pair of strong Sr. two-way lineman
in Archie Navarre (5-11 300) & Aaron Hayes (6-2 280). Sr. FB/LB Cedric
Green will also be a key as will Sr. WR/DBs Tyreef Henry & Hakim Leach...
The 2nd playoff spot will be up for grabs here and could come from either Bartram, West or
Southern as they could all beat each other on any given day. Bartram has 6 Sr leaders and
could be the pick if I'm a betting man, but they don't have the usual go-to guy or strong
offense. They do have the usual lack of depth. Their top dogs are two-way linemen Kennis
Jones (6-2 275) & Marcus Macklin (5-11 245), strong FB/LB Adrian Jackson
(5'10 225) and tough TE/LB Jeremy Welzcher (6-1 225). All others are unproven at
best... West is confident behind a host of depth at the skill positions. Defense will be
the big question here though that won't be because of speedy multi-purpose back Gerald
Dove (6-0 180), whose best position is corner. Three Sr. transfers will bolster the
line-up... Southern looks optimistic as they are in a similar situation to West, however
their depth is on the defensive. They, too will be bolstered by transfers, but led by
4-year starter FB/LB Gerald Terry (6-0 210), a fine prospect... UC lost a lot, but
has some good pieces in place. They have one the leagues best Lineman in two-way tackle William
"Central" Gray (6-4 325).
As you can see, I am very enthusiastic about the start of Fb in the
city. It seems like I've been waiting since Mid July. This should once again be a great
season. Good luck to all.
P.S - Sorry, I didn't get to the Inter-Ac. I didn't have enough info and didn't want to go
off of other people's opinions. I will be seen on that beat as well over the course of the
season.
