JUNE 3
PUBLIC LEAGUE FINAL
Frankford 6, Northeast 4: Joe Farina allowed seven hits, struck out
10, collected two hits and had an RBI on a bases-loaded walk as the Pioneers defended
their title. The championship was Farina's seventh in three years at Frankford (three in
wrestling, two apiece in baseball and football) and he finished with a 97-2 PL record,
including playoffs. Cory Shaeffer and Richard Jimenez had RBI on sacrifice flies. Jimenez
added a run-scoring single. Frankford had just 10 varsity players for virtually the entire
season. For Northeast, Brandon O'Malley went 2-for-2 with a triple, two walks and an RBI.
Chris Steinke and losing pitcher Andrew Lihotz added run-scoring singles.
CATHOLIC LEAGUE FINAL
Carroll 7, Ryan 3: This one was played over two
days. In the top of the seventh on Day One, Chris Cashman, after being granted new life
due to a dropped foul popup, delivered a grand slam -- the first in CL title history -- to
dead leftfield to erase a 3-1 deficit. The ball reached the loading dock of a building
beyond a driveway. Estimated distance: a shade over 400 feet. The next two batters reached
base and the skies opened big-time, forcing a suspension. The infield was a mess, plus La
Salle's groundskeepers finished their workday and headed home two minutes before the game
was halted. The Day Two resumption lasted just 12 minutes. It began as Ryan Stewart
delivered a bad-hop, two-run single. There was no activity thereafter. Brandon Gribbin won
in relief, just as he had in the semis. He pitched two perfect innings. Carroll staged
comebacks in all three playoff victories. Rob Fisher (single) and Anthony Carter (double)
had run-scoring hits in Ryan's three-run third.
MAY 29
CATHOLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINALS
Carroll 9, Conwell-Egan 8 (8 inn.): The Patriots rallied from a 6-1
deficit, forced extra innings at 7-7 with three runs in the visiting seventh (big hit:
Colin McHale's two-run double) and held on in the home eighth when Alex Szathmary was
rubbed out at the plate to end the game while trying to take two bases on a wild pitch.
Catcher Matt Lisowski could not locate Brian Rorick's wild pitch. Rorick wound up
recovering the ball at the base of the backstop and tossed to Lisowski at the plate. C-E's
Tim Carroll went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, walk and two RBI. Kurt Bruehl added three
hits, including a double, and two RBI. Of Carroll's eight runs over the last four innings,
six were unearned due to five errors.
Ryan 10, O'Hara 3: The Raiders completed the low seeds' sweep of the
doubleheader (first time since 1997) by erasing a 2-0 deficit with five runs in the fourth
inning and rolling from there. Rob Fisher had an RBI double off the top of the rightfield
fence in the fourth and squibbed a two-run single to right in the fifth. Tom Dolan
hammered a two-run homer way over the rightfield fence in the sixth and Nick DiEnno added
an RBI infield single in the seventh. Mike Szelagowski worked the first six innings.

Northeast 2, Central 1: Andrew Lihotz, a senior lefty, recorded his
first 11 outs on strikeouts (with three singles mixed in) and finished with 14 Ks, tying
the record for a PL semifinal, along with a six-hitter. He opened the home seventh with a
single, convinced coach Sam Feldman to refrain from inserting a courtesy runner, stole
second and third and, with the infield up, raced home as Jason Zitman's popup landed at
the edge of the dirt behind shortstop Jared Farbman. Chris McNamee scored Northeast's
other run on a steal-error combo. For Central, Andrew "Harry Potter" allowed
seven hits, Brandon Watson went 3-for-3 with a double and Mark Gillman had an RBI double
out of the No. 9 hole.

screaming liner and stepped on the bag for a game-ending doubleplay. Joe Farina pitched a
three-hitter with nine strikeouts. Carlos Rosado and Jimenez had RBI doubles in a four-run
first while Carlos Masip added a two-run single. Geoff Minetola, the No. 9 hitter, doubled
