JUNE 5
PIAA QUARTERFINAL
(At Spring-Ford High)
Hempfield 3, Frankford 2: All of the scoring took place in the
last three innings. Esteban "Shortie" Meletiche stole home in the bottom of the
fifth to get things started, then surrendered a two-run homer. Hempfield added
one more in the seventh, then Edwin "Tito" Rohena delivered an RBI single in the
bottom half. Frankford had the bases loaded with one away, but a forceout at the
plate and popout ended it. All five of Frankford's hits were singles, 12 guys
fanned and eight runners were stranded in scoring position.
JUNE 2
PIAA FIRST-ROUND PLAYOFFS
CLASS AAAA
(At La Salle University)
Frankford 3, Avon Grove 1 (8 inn.): Edwin "Tito" Rohena pitched a
three-hitter, struck out seven, picked two runners off first base and gave
himself the win with a one-out, two-run homer to dead rightfield in the home
eighth. Jon Bracero was plunked by a 3-2 pitch immediately beforehand. The
Pioneers, humbled by a combined score of 35-3 in three previous state
appearances, scored in the second as Frank Donato doubled and came around on a
pair of errors. Esteban "Shortie" Meletiche doubled for Frankford's other hit.
CLASS AAA
(At Ashburn Field)
Blue Mountain 14, Phila. Elec. 0 (5 inn.): The Chargers were
held to two hits, singles by Chuck Fitzgerald and Ricky Holmes, and had to play
most of the last two innings with just eight players. In the visiting fourth,
relief pitcher Luke Moscinski was almost knocked out by a knee to the head as he
scooped up a dribbler along the first-base line and tagged the runner. He could
not continue, but rightfielder Anthony Digneo, who had just yielded to sub Aaron
Casby, was unable to re-enter the game in Moscinski's spot in the order.
Moscinski would have led off the home fourth. PE was assessed an automatic out.
Over BM's last two at-bats, PE coach Mark Olkowski went with three infielders
rather than two outfielders.
CLASS AA
(At Blue Mountain)
Pine Grove 11, Prep Charter 1 (5 inn.): The Huskies' only hit,
Sean McGovern's RBI single, made it 1-0 in the visiting first after Kyle Stanton
walked and was bunted over by losing pitcher Sam Shipley.
CLASS A
(At Ashburn Field)
Christopher Dock 16, GAMP 1 (6 inn.): In game two of a
doublehaeder, the visitors exploded for eight runs in the visiting sixth and
GAMP had no answers. The Pioneers were limited to five singles. They scored in
the fifth as frosh Dom Raia singled and later tallied on Nick Coppola's base
hit.
MAY 28
PUBLIC LEAGUE FINAL
(At Campbell's Field, Camden)
Frankford 15, Central 5 (6 inn.): Under first-year coach Juan Namnun,
the Pioneers became the second Pub program in recent times (also Northeast,
1994-99) to win five championships in a six-year period. They did it the hard
way, too, in this night game, spotting Central to a 5-1 lead after 2 1/2
innings. Frankford changed the tide with a nine-run third. The first five runs
were scored without the benefit of a hit, then Jon Bracero (three-run double)
and Edwin "Tito" Rohena (RBI triple) added exclamation marks. Esteban "Shortie"
Meletiche pitched a six-hitter with as many strikeouts and cracked a pair of
two-run doubles for four RBI; the second ended the game with one away in the
sixth. Frankford upped its seven-year record vs. Pub opposition to 117-8,
counting playoffs. Central's highlights were RBI doubles by Tom Capewell and
Mike Braun.
MAY 27
CATHOLIC LEAGUE FINAL
(At Widener Univ.)
SJ Prep 5, Bonner 1: Kyle Mullen pitched a four-hitter and received
no-errors support from his fielders as the Hawks captured a second consecutive
title. Pitching coach Bob Blake had to leave town on business, so pitch-calling
duties were left to catcher Dennis Murphy. Aaron Haas (one-run) and Jeff Lynch
(two-run) smacked RBI singles in a three-run third, Brett Tiagwad posted a
two-run single in the sixth and Tim Edger registered six assists at shortstop.
The original shortstop, Steve Bruno, a returning first team All-City player, had
transferred to Gloucester Catholic in early April, forcing Edger to move in from
centerfield. Bonner lefty Conor Kerins, who'd fanned 13 Hawks in a regular
season meeting, suffered his first loss of the season while going on
shorter-than-usual rest (four days). The Friars scored in the sixth on
consecutive hits by Pat Warrington (double) and Rob Benedict (single).
MAY 23
CATHOLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINAL
(At Widener Univ.)
Bonner 11, Ryan 1: A pair of righthanders, junior Ryan Haley (2.2
innings) and senior John Condo, combined to pitch a no-hitter that covered six
innings. It was the second such no-no of the week in a CL playoff (though SJ
Prep's over Wood featured three pitchers for two innings apiece) and it earned
the Friars a spot in the championship game for the first time since 1989. Haley
walked three and struck out two; the run scored on consecutive errors in the
third. Condo walked one and fanned one. Condo, a closer all season, would have
enjoyed going to the mound for the seventh, but the Friars scored eight in the
home sixth on only three hits (just one left the infield). For the game, Bonner
had no extra base hits and half of its eight singles did not reach the outfield.
MAY 22
CATHOLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINAL
(At Phila. Univ.)
SJ Prep 5, Neumann-Goretti 1: On the strength of Mark Donato's
rocketed homer to dead rightfield (20 to 25 feet high; 346 down the line) and
pitching of Nick Piscitelli, N-G was giving the defending champs great cause for
consternation through 5 1/2 innings. Ten batters later, Prep owned a five-spot.
The big hit was Perry Russom's 400-foot, two-run double to dead center. Aaron
Haas and Kyle Mullen (two innings) did the pitching.
CATHOLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS
Bonner 8, Kennedy-Kenrick 1: Wet grounds forced a one-day
postponement and then a move from Bonner's new field to Neumann College. Conor
Kerins still felt right at home, allowing two hits and fanning 10 over six
innings (seven in the first three). Bill Hollingsworth's RBI double made it 2-1
in the third. Lou Tomasetti had a pair of RBI singles.
Ryan 3, Conwell-Egan 2: Rain halted this one in the fifth inning,
with the score tied at 2-2. In the resumption, Ryan scored one in the visiting
seventh as Jon Schmidt walked, went to second on a wild pitch and came around on
an infield throwing error. Bob Steffney got the win with three no-hit, no-run
relief innings. Nick Ferdinand (HBP) and Jerry Smith (walk) had Ryan's RBI. Sean
O'Hara (injured on Day One, unavailable for Day Two) and Pat Sevick had C-E's on
singles.
MAY 21
PUBLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINALS
(Doubleheader at La Salle University)
Frankford 6, Northeast 4: The Pioneers used a three-spot in the home
sixth to earn their sixth consecutive visit to the championship game. Jose
Burgos and Robinson Rodriguez scored on daring dashes that followed wild pitches
and Jose Gueits, the No. 9 hitter, capped the rally with an RBI single. Esteban
"Shortie" Meletiche smashed an RBI double and made a sensational, diving,
back-to-the-infield catch of a popup. Frankford junior Edwin "Tito" Rohena and
Northeast lefty Brian Susten allowed nine hits apiece. Susten added a triple.
Central 12, Washingon 11 (10 inn.): A double by Aaron
Esbensen (4-for-6, two RBI) and a single by Tom Capewell (3-for-5, three RBI)
gave Central a run in the visiting 10th. Capewell, the shortstop, gunned down a
runner at the plate in the bottom half on a fielder's choice. Central led, 11-1,
after 5 1/2. Washington scored eight in the sixth and Stan Borodyansky (3-for-4,
three RBI) tied it with a two-run single in the seventh. Stephen Schall got the
win with four scoreless frames. Plate ump John Jackson would have halted play
after the 10th due to rapidly diminishing sunlight.
CATHOLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS
(At home fields)
Neumann-Goretti 1, La Salle 0: Lefty Mark Donato, the first
soph MVP in league history, pitched a three-hitter to outduel junior lefty Shawn
O'Neill (also three hits allowed). In the home sixth, Aggie Osano reached first
on a bad-hop single, pinch-runner Anthony Pfettcher got to second on a caught
stealing/dropped ball combo and, after Joey Armata was issued an intentional
walk, soph Mike Riverso slashed an RBI single to center. This was N-G/Neumann's
first playoff visit since '97 while the 1-0 score was the first in a CL playoff
since 1999 (and eighth total).
SJ Prep 10, Wood 0:
Kyle Mullen, Kevin
Gillen and Pat Carbone (two innings apiece) combined to spin a six inning
no-hitter. They struck out eight; Mullen led with four. Brett Tiagwad went
3-for-4 with a double and triple for three RBI. Aaron Haas clubbed a two-run
homer. Perry Russom also had two RBI.
MAY 19
PUBLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS
Northeast 8, GAMP 5: A three-run triple by Jose Delgado capped a
seven-run first, but GAMP kept creeping back and loaded the bases with one out
in the seventh. A popup and lineout to rightfield ended it. Lance Lempert went
five-plus innings and then made a hairy sixth-inning catch in leftfield to start
a doubleplay in support of A.J. Logan. For GAMP, Eugene Aversa doubled and got
serious help from the wind on a two-run homer.
Central 15, Lincoln 0: Shane Meyer and Micah Winterstein had
matching performances (3-for-3, two RBI) and Aaron Esbensen turned his three
hits into one RBI as Central rolled, in four innings. Zach Magdovitz allowed two
hits and struck out six.
Frankford 7, Phila. Elec. 0: Esteban "Shortie" Meletiche went
2-for-2 with one RBI, scored three runs and pitched one-hit, 10-whiff ball over
five innings. Frank Donato finished up. Randy Pizzo singled twice for PET.
Washington 13, Prep Charter 3: Damien Wilmer went 3-for-4 with a
solo homer and three RBI in a game that went six innings. Wilmer's homer and a
two-run single came in a six-run third. Will McFillin went 3-for-4 with one RBI
while Dan Engelberg and Andrew Goodman stroked two hits apiece. Goodman added
two RBI. Engelberg settled for one. Eric Eder fanned eight over four innings and
Tom Radziak pitched no-hit ball in his two frames.
CATHOLIC LEAGUE PRE-PLAYOFFS
Red Division
(At La Salle High)
Ryan 4, N. Catholic 2: This one featured a major snafu. The
teams first met on Sunday, but the game was halted by rain in the bottom of the
third, with North up, 2-0. CL baseball moderator Fran Murphy was under the
impression that PIAA rules in this specific instance mirror the National Federation's, which call for a
restart. They don't. The game should have been resumed. By the time the mess was
untangled via assorted cell phones Monday afternoon, the Blue pre-playoff
featuring coach Murphy's Carroll team and host Wood (also halted Sunday after
one scoreless inning) was in progress. Murphy said Ryan-North, for consistency's
sake, had to restart since Carroll-Wood had already done so. Nick Ferdinand
pounded a solo homer deep into the leftfield woods and pitched three-hit ball
with eight strikeouts. Ferdinand and teammate Kevin Mack collected two hits.
Losing pitcher Ryan Etsell did so for North. Ryan's Jerry Smith had two RBI.
PIAA rules did not permit a protest.
Blue Division
(At Wood)
Wood 7, Carroll 3: Andrew Penecale and Kyle Schwab, the No. 9
hitter, slammed homers, Joe Nicholson added two RBI, and Pete Gubicza (no-hit
over the last two innings; nephew of ex-major league pitcher Mark Gubicza) saved
the win for Brian O'Grady. Jared Tuwalski and Mike Maerz halved four hits for
Carroll.
INTER-AC LEAGUE
Malvern 6, Penn Charter 2: Rick Kazigian fanned 10 in six innings and
Nick Busillo went 2-for-2 with two RBI as the champion Friars finished 9-1.
Gtn. Academy 16, Haverford School 2: Steve Boland went five innings
and Joe Conaway hit two homers, raising his season total to nine, for four RBI.
MAY 17
INTER-AC LEAGUE
Chestnut Hill 11, Episcopal 7: Mike Mattei (three-run) and Steel
Russell hit homers on consecutive pitches and Brandon Sady went the distance.
Gtn. Academy 4, Malvern 2: This result of a May 6 game has been
finalized. Due to a rules violation not detected at the time by the umps, GA had
offered to replay the final part of the game May 19. Malvern has already
clinched the title and a makeup with Penn Charter must be played May 19, so the
replay has been canceled.
MAY 15
