JUNE 8
PIAA SEMIFINAL
CLASS AAAA
At Spring-Ford
  Parkland 6, SJ Prep 2:
Three errors and a balk dumped the Hawks into a 3-0 hole in the first and they were no-hit through six innings. Pinch-hitter Bobby Della Polla led off the seventh with a single and Ray Toto followed with the first homer by a Catholic League player in PIAA playoff history. Pat Carbone pitched 3 2/3 innings of shutout relief (one hit, six whiffs).
PIAA SEMIFINAL
CLASS AAA
At Wenger Field, Fredericksburg
Abington Heights 9, Neumann-Goretti 4: Nicky Nardini gave the Saints a 1-0 lead with a second-inning single, but AH roared back with four runs and finished with 13 total hits. Al Baur went 2-for-4 with a two-run single, cutting the deficit to 7-4. Dom Riverso also posted two hits.

JUNE 6
PIAA QUARTERFINAL
CLASS AAAA
At Glen Mills
SJ Prep 2, West Chester East 1:
Following two postponements caused by rain, coach Chris Rupertus opted to bring back Kyle Mullen on four days' rest. The result -- a two-hitter (one was a misjudged popup) with seven strikeouts. The Hawks scored twice in the third without a hit as RBI went to Greg "Buddy" Brooks (fielder's choice) and Jeff Lynch (sac fly). Ray Toto collected two hits.

JUNE 4
PIAA QUARTERFINAL
CLASS AAA
At Spring-Ford
  Neumann-Goretti 1, Twin Valley 0:
Under gray skies and occasional rain, Mark Donato spun a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts and allowed no one beyond second base. The Saints scored in the third on a double steal as Reno Regalbuto thieved second and Marty Venafro ran home. As did some N-G parents, Regalbuto acknowledged afterward that he'd probably been tagged out (that call would have ended the inning). TV's players and coach convinced the second base ump to confer with his partner at first; the call stood.

JUNE 1
PIAA FIRST-ROUND STATE PLAYOFFS
CLASS AAAA
At La Salle University
SJ Prep 4, Garnet Valley 3:
Kyle Mullen struck out nine while yielding as many hits as the Prep built a 4-0 lead, then held on. The final out was recorded as Ray Toto threw out a would-be basestealer at second. Kyle Gillen drove home a run in the fourth. Toto (on a double) and Jeff Lynch (two-run single) had RBI in a three-run fifth. This was the CL's first win in a state baseball playoff, as the game started one hour earlier than Neumann-Goretti's. Lynch, leading off the second in the cleanup spot, posted the first hit on a line drive single to center. Greg "Buddy" Brooks, son of football coach Gil Brooks, was the Hawks' first baserunner (one-out walk in the first).
At Boyertown
Council Rock North 6, Central 2: The Public League champs were held to four hits. Their runs scored on Zach Magdovitz' solo homer in the fourth and Ian Lewis' double in the seventh.
CLASS AAA
At Stump Stadium, Pine Grove
Neumann-Goretti 8, Blue Mountain 4 (8 inn.): With two away in the home seventh, Al Baur served up a game-tying, two-run homer. His teammates had his back, though, witness their four-run eighth. Dom Riverso drove in two runs with a triple (he doubled earlier), Marty Venafro got another one home with a fielder's choice and Reno Regalbuto delivered an RBI single. Baur finished with 10 strikeouts in a five-hitter.
CLASS AA
At La Salle University
Tulpehocken 8, Kennedy-Kenrick 1: Christian "Ya-Ya" Walker stroked two of the five hits managed by the Wolverines, who whiffed 14 times. Coach Tom Sergio sent six subs to the plate in the seventh. Evan Basile led off with a single and eventually scored on a strikeout/wild pitch/bad throw trifecta.
At Memorial Stadium, Ephrata
  Brandywine Heights 17, Esperanza 2 (3 inn.):
Teofilo Bonilla (double) and Carlos Rodriguez managed hits for Esperanza. The runs scored on errors.
CLASS A
at Hershey High
Camp Hill 4, GAMP 0: The Pioneers were limited to singles by Tyler Criniti and Eugene Aversa.

MAY 28
City Title Tripleheader at Campbell's Field
CLASS AAA
  Neumann-Goretti 17, Franklin Towne 1 (4 inn.):
Reno Regalbuto struck out eight in a four-hitter and the top five guys in the order combined for 12 RBI -- three apiece for Regalbuto and Joey Armata (four hits); two apiece for Al Baur, Mark Donato and Mike Riverso. The City Title game had not been played since 1979 and Donato registered three of the resumption firsts (single, double, sac fly). His single was the game's initial safety and came with two away in the visiting first. Eight of N-G's 18 hits went for extra bases. John Myers posted FT's RBI on a single.
CLASS AA
  Kennedy-Kenrick 12, Esperanza 1 (5 inn.):
Joe Harvey went 3-for-3 with a double and five RBI and picked up the win by pitching a perfect third inning (two strikeouts). Ed Skilton (three hits) and Dave Custer halved six RBI. Christian Ortiz bagged Esperanza's RBI.
CLASS AAAA
SJ Prep 11, Central 1 (6 inn.): Central held a 1-0 lead after three innings, thanks to an RBI single by frosh Mike Cavallaro, but the Prep milked seven walks while scoring six in the fourth and posted a three-spot in the sixth, thus ending it, as the first five batters smacked base hits to all sectors. Ray Toto wound up 2-for-3 with three RBI and his two-run single was one of only two hits in the fourth. Kevin Gillen fanned eight in five frames while allowing two hits. Counting the Pub semi and final, and this game, Central's pitchers went 13 1/3 innings without recording a strikeout before Cavallaro fanned Dan Turner with two away in the fifth.

MAY 27
PUBLIC LEAGUE FINAL
At Campbell's Field
  Central 12, Northeast 2:
The final four guys in the order combined for eight RBI as the Lancers stormed to their third title of the decade. Their highlights were a solo homer down the leftfield line by Brian Burkett, a three-run triple by Graham Johnston and a two-run double by Zack King. David Kremer singled twice while drawing a walk and absorbing a plunking. Steve Schall performed the rare trick, especially for a winning pitcher, of going the distance without recording a strikeout. He allowed five hits and fell behind in the first on Julius Spann's two-run single.

MAY 26
CATHOLIC LEAGUE FINAL
At Widener University
  Neumann-Goretti 3, La Salle 1 (8 inn.):
Leaving behind the disappointment of five title-game failures along the way, the Saints (nee Pirates) won their first championship since 1960 with only two seniors among the 10 starters. Junior lefty Mark Donato spun a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts and pitched shutout ball over the final seven frames. The decisive run scored as Reno Regalbuto singled, stole second and raced home on Al Baur's single. Donato then managed a misjudged double, courtesy runner Blaze Cedrone moved to third on an obstruction call and Joey Armata beat out an infield single. La Salle lefty Shawn O'Neill also went the distance (seven hits) while trying to match his dad's accomplishment; Shawn Sr. pitched Judge to the '76 CL crown. Brendan McCoy singled home La Salle's run. In the fifth, catcher T.J. Burgmann posted both putouts on a wacky doubleplay -- 9-2-6-2 after Baur singled to right.

MAY 22
CATHOLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINALS
At Phila. University
  La Salle 15, Wood 9:
With Matt McAllister's grand slam serving as the obvious highlight, Wood scored five runs in the first one-third of the home first. Soph Brian Zielinski relieved and held the Vikings scoreless through six. He departed three batters into the seventh and wound up getting charged with two runs (one earned). Tyler Freeman went 2-for-3 with a double, homer, sac fly and intentional walk en route to four RBI. Brendan McCoy added three hits, two RBI. Mike Antoni managed two hits and one RBI and turned a huge doubleplay in the fifth, keeping the lead at 7-5. He caught a hopper, tagged out a baserunner who'd strayed off the bag, and gunned to first baseman Sean Abbott (also two hits, one RBI).
At Neumann College
Neumann-Goretti 10, SJ Prep 9 (9 inn.): The Saints suffered a serious blow in the home seventh when the Prep, with two away, mounted a four-run rally to create a 7-7 tie. Ray Toto (double for two runs), Jeff Lynch and Greg "Buddy" Brooks (singles) had the RBI. Reno Regalbuto pitched shutout ball thereafter and the winning uprising featured a walk to Dom Riverso, a stolen base and a groundball single to center by frosh Marty Venafro. Regalbuto also had two hits, one RBI. Riverso and his brother, Mike, combined for three apiece of hits and RBI, five runs scored and four stolen bases. Toto (three RBI) and Gio Morales (three runs scored) stroked four hits apiece for Prep. The game featured 27 hits (16 for Prep) and 45 baserunners. With 43, these two games broke the city record for runs scored in semifinals. There'd been 41 in '87 (CL) and again in '88 (PL).

MAY 21
PUBLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINALS
(Doubleheader at La Salle University)
  Northeast 11, Washington 1 (5 inn.):
Jose Delgado started an eight-run first with a triple and capped it with another three-bagger; this one was good for two RBI. Overall, Josh "Pudge" Rivera and Mike Stampone bagged two RBI apiece while Brian Susten pitched a four-hitter with eight strikeouts. Losing pitcher Aaron Wilmer went 2-for-2 with a double and walk.
Central 14, Frankford 9: Steve Schall toughed out a 12-hitter and went 2-for-4 with a double, sac fly and three RBI as the Lancers halted Frankford's bid to win a sixth title in seven seasons (and seventh of the decade). Brian Burkett, wearing glasses because an eye infection forced him to go without contacts, went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Zack King also posted three RBI. For Frankford, Dominican import Wander Nunez, using a wooden bat, launched a pair of solo homers over the 25-foot fence -- one to left-center (about two-thirds of the way from the leftfield line to dead centerfield) and another to straightaway left.

C-E's Pat Sevick, normally the catcher but limited to DH duty due to a compound fracture of his left index finger, had two hits.
Wood 14, Roman 13 (9 inn.): In the highest scoring one-run playoff in CL history, the Vikings rallied from deficits of 6-0 and 13-8 and won it in the home ninth on a no-out, bases-loaded hit by pitch (drawn by Kyle McCrossen). John Hildebrand (double) and Herbetko (another homer) slammed hits worth two runs apiece in a five-run eighth. Wood battled back on two-run doubles by McCrossen and Mike Kerns and Sean Duckworth's chopped RBI single over a drawn-in infield. Jeff Courter pitched one uneventful inning to win it. He was the only one of seven pitchers to yield no runs. Matt McAllister led Wood with four RBI. McCrossen and Kerns had three apiece. Hildebrand and Herbetko managed four apiece for Roman while A.J. Vagliani was the game's only player with four hits.
