JUNE 10
PIAA QUARTERFINALS
CLASS AAA
(At Boyertown)
Twin Valley 2, Wood 0: Jeff Courter allowed eight hits, but worked
out of several jams to limit TV to two runs. Alas, Wood managed just
one hit, Kyle McCrossen's first inning single. Thinking he'd
homered, McCrossen was slow out of the box. The ball hit the fence
and he was gunned down at second.
CLASS AA
(At Northern York)
Loyalsock 9, Kennedy-Kenrick 1: The Wolverines
went quietly in the final game of the school's 17-year existence.
Greg Guidone, immediately following one by Anthony Carr, rapped the
last hit in K-K history in the seventh. An error loaded the bases,
but the next two batters were retired. The Wolverines were held
hitless for four frames. Rob Barth posted the final RBI.
JUNE 7
PIAA FIRST ROUND PLAYOFFS
CLASS AAAA
(At Richie Ashburn Field)
Great Valley 4, Bonner 1: Matt Ruggieri's RBI single gave Bonner a
1-0 lead in the second inning. Josh VanHorn and Steve Markus had the
Friars' only other hits. Anthony DiGalbo took the loss. The final 14
Friars went down in order.
(At Glen Mills)
West Chester Henderson 11, Central 1 (5 inn.):
The Lancers were limited
to five hits, with two going to Dan Quinn. Gabe Buchanan launched a
sac fly to score Mike Cavallaro. Pete Rowe took the loss. Henderson
scored six in the home fifth to end it.
CLASS AAA
(At La Salle High)
Wood 10, West York 6: The Vikings spotted West
York a 6-0 lead, then roared back with five apiece in the second and
sixth. Kyle McCrossen's two-run single highlighted the second. In
the sixth, Matt McAllister barely beat the relay to prevent an
inning-ending doubleplay and drive in the tying run. Brian O'Grady
and McAllister then scored on a hit-error combo and Brady McNab
capped the outburst with a two-homer over the fence in dead
rightfield. Larry Brittingham won in relief. His 2.2 innings
included no runs, no hits and four strikeouts. The game started at
4. Wood's graduation had begun five hours earlier at Villanova's
Pavilion.
CLASS AA
(At Richie Ashburn Field)
Kennedy-Kenrick 2, Delone Catholic 1: In just
1:21, Joe Harvey kept the Wolverines' athletic program alive by
mowing down 10 in a three-hitter. Rob Barth (fifth inning) and Sal
DiPrinzio (one out in home seventh) delivered RBI singles. Barth
walked to start the seventh. Alex Frederick bunted him over, then
Cullen Rota (2-for-3) was issued an intentional walk before
DiPrinzio surfaced as the final hero. Before the game, Harvey used
tweezers to remove a small piece of broken glass from the ball of
his left foot. The night before, he'd walked barefoot around Ocean
City, N.J., while celebrating Senior Week.
(At Northern York)
Bermudian Springs 11, Esperanza 0 (5 inn.): Frank
Mejia collected two of Esperanza's five hits. Carlos Gil was the
losing pitcher.
CLASS A
(At Montgomery County CC)
Christopher Dock 15, GAMP 5 (6 inn.): The Pioneers
built leads of 1-0 and 3-2, but the end result wasn't too pretty.
Three innings apiece were pitched by Anthony DiVincenzo, who took
the loss but also homered, and Dom Raia. Sal Giafaglione, Joe
Coppola, Tyler Criniti and Jimmy Coin all doubled, while the first
two managed two hits apiece.
JUNE 3
CITY TITLE GAMES
CLASS AAAA
(At La Salle High)
Bonner 11, Central 4: As it had two days earlier in the CL final, the
Friars tumbled into a 3-0 hole in the first half inning. And this
was the fourth time in as many postseason games that they faced a
deficit. They survived mostly thanks to five runs in the third and
fifth. Triples by Matt Ruggieri (two-run) and Rick Reigner (one-run)
highlighted the fifth-inning uprising. Seven Friars total collected
RBI. Reigner, Alex Liberatore, Paul Shepherd and Mike Haley had two
hits apiece. Joe Nestor fanned seven over five innings. Matt Dolan
and Jim Bonner worked one hitless frame apiece in relief.
CLASS AAA
(At Richie Ashburn Field)
Wood 10, Franklin Towne 0 (5 inn.): Larry
Brittingham struck out seven while spinning a five-inning
one-hitter. Jeff Courter (two-run single, first inning) and Mike
Spahits (three-run triple, third) posted the big hits. Courter went
3-for-3 while Kyle McCrossen added two hits.
CLASS AA
(At Richie Ashburn Field)
Kennedy-Kenrick 11, Esperanza 1 (6 inn.): In the
second game of a doubleheader, Joe Harvey mowed down 10 in a
five-inning stint while allowing four hits. Jimmy Volpe then struck
out the side in the final frame. Dave Custer's three-run double
highlighted a five-run fourth. AJ Koscelansky bagged two RBI on a
fielder's choice and single. Esperanza led, 1-0, on Teofilo
Bonilla's RBI double.
JUNE 1
CATHOLIC LEAGUE FINAL
(At Widener)
Bonner 13, Ryan 3 (5 inn.): Ryan scored three in the visiting first,
but Bonner answered hard with four in the second and nine in the
third while storming to its first title since 1989 and raising its
scoring average for three playoff games to 10.3. In the combined
outbursts, Rick Reigner contributed two RBI on a double and single,
Josh VanHorn (double, second) and Steve Markus (single, third)
stroked hits worth two runs apiece, Alex Liberatore went 2-for-2
with a double, a walk and one RBI, and Mike Haley turned two singles
into one RBI. After allowing four hits in the first (Kevin Mack and
Steve Markle had RBI singles), Anthony DiGalbo settled down to
complete a six-hitter. Bonner's best post-game display: handing
6-year-old batboy George Nestor (brother of pitcher Joe Nestor) the
championship plaque, hoisting him high and serenading him with the
Happy Birthday song.
PUBLIC LEAGUE FINAL
(At La Salle University)
Central 7, Frankford 3: Julien Blancon snapped a
2-2 tie with a three-run double in the home fourth, then Central
sustained the momentum in the fifth by turning a tripleplay on
Augusto Ortega's comebacker to pitcher Pete Rowe. The putouts went
to third baseman Ricardo Tull (forceout), second baseman Gabe
Buchanan (as Ortega continued around first) and Blancon, the
catcher, as Ricky Alvarez, who began the play on first base, tried
to come all the way around. Rowe allowed seven hits and fanned six
while giving Rich Weiss a title in his first year as coach. Mark
Gervasi had two hits, two RBI. Buchanan and Adam Hoskins also bagged
two hits. For Frankford, Francisco Bonilla turned two safeties into
one RBI. Central had to go without starting third baseman Kevin
Pfeifer, ejected from the semifinal for slamming his helmet after
being called out by Jim Carpino on a close play at first. (Still
pics, culled from a video by Central parent Mike Cavallaro, showed
Pfeifer was safe.) Cavallaro's son, also named Mike and a soph
centerfielder, was the Lancers' only returning starter and he missed
roughly a month of action after pulling a hamstring in the very
first game.
MAY 29
CATHOLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINALS
(At La Salle High)
Ryan 9, Wood 8: The Raiders used an eight-run fourth to build a 9-2
lead, then held on -- yes, for dear life -- as Wood scored five in
the six and one in the seventh. With two away and runners on first
and second, Sean Kovacs replaced winner Kevin Mack and served up a
jolt caught right in front of the centerfield fence by a slightly
off-balance Pat Kwiatkowski (on his final step, his foot slid on the
warning track). Colin Budny had two hits, including a capping RBI
double, in Ryan's outburst. He also made a tag to complete a rundown
in Wood's sixth after Brett McCrossen's double brought in two runs.
Chris Zikmund's homer to left-center, which immediately followed,
thus was good for just two runs, not three. Mark Golic had a
three-run double in Ryan's fourth. Mike Spahits homered for Wood in
the first.
(At Widener)
Bonner 9, Neumann-Goretti 5: Proving their team
was in hackin' mode, Bonner's first four batters swung at the first
pitch and two runs resulted. The Friars crunched 13 hits, with seven
for extra bases. Matt Mullen went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four
RBI and his three-run two-bagger, high off the fence in left-center,
extended the lead to 9-5 in the home sixth after Matt Ruggieri's
sacrifice fly broke a 5-5 tie. Rick Reigner (double), Sam Christie
(two doubles) and Josh VanHorn (double, triple) thirded six
safeties. The win, in relief, went to Matt Dolan (no hits, no runs
in two frames), who'd pitched almost not at all over the previous
month. For N-G, Mike Riverso thumped a two-run homer over the
400-foot sign in dead center and Mike "Zoom" Zolk had two hits. The
31 runs scored in these semis were the most since 1987 (a record 41;
fueled by Bonner's 19-14 win over St. James).
MAY 28
PUBLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINALS
(Doubleheader at La Salle University)
Frankford 7, Washington 0: Soph righthander Omar Cruz picked a great
time to twirl his first career shutout. He fanned five in a
four-hitter and the Pioneers played error-free defense. Ricky
Alvarez (single) and Brandon Gonzalez (double) stroked hits worth
two runs apiece in a six-run second. Augusto Ortega went 3-for-4
with a walk, two steals and two runs scored. Harrison Leal, who
arrived in the third inning after attending a funeral, had
Washington's only extra-base hit, a double. In the seventh, the 5-2
3/4, 121-pound Alvarez, the No. 9 hitter, became one of the smallest
players in world baseball history to receive an intentional walk. Up
next was Ortega. He swung at the first pitch and pounded into a
doubleplay, thus ending the inning.
Central 6, GAMP 3: Pete Rowe pitched two-hit, one-run ball over
the final four innings to gain the win, in relief of Kevin Pfeifer,
and Mike Cavallaro lashed a pair of RBI singles. Dan Quinn and Mark
Gervasi also bagged two hits apiece, as did losing pitcher Dom Raia
(one was a triple). Central suffered a late-game blow when Pfeifer,
incorrectly called out (according to still pics culled from a video) on a close play at first
base, was ejected after slamming his helmet and raging at ump Jim Carpino, "Are you kidding me?!" The dismissal made him ineligible
for the championship game.
MAY 25
CATHOLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS
Neumann-Goretti 10, Carroll 4: Mark Donato became just the third guy
to register as many as 14 strikeouts in a CL playoff and just the
ninth to homer twice in the same game. Both were solo shots; he also
doubled. Marty Venafro went 3-for-3 with a three-run double and five
RBI. Mike Santoleri (double) and Seamus Finnegan (triple) hit shots
to chase home two runs apiece.
Wood 1, Kennedy-Kenrick 0: Matt McAllister pitched a three-hitter
with eight strikeouts, and Mike Spahits scored in the third as Jeff
Courter drew a bases-loaded walk. For K-K, which advanced just one
guy as far as third base in its final CL game, Joe Harvey allowed
five hits. Steve Zbyszinski singled twice.
Ryan 8, La Salle 7: Steve Markle's right-side infield dribbler
scored Eric Frain, who'd doubled, to win it with one out in the home
seventh. Frain went 4-for-4 with three RBI. John "Milk" Rizzo two
hits, two RBI. Kevin Mack worked one-third of an inning to get the
win. AJ Rodriguez' two-run single and Mike Piscopo's single drove in
the final three runs in La Salle's four-run seventh. Joe Forcellini
bagged three hits and scored thrice, as well.
Bonner 9, Judge 8: Bonner scored the first six runs as Rick
Reigner (solo homer, two-run single) provided much of the impetus.
Kurt Sowa's two-run single and Anthony D'Ambrosio's three-run triple
highlighted Judge's seven-run fourth. In the bottom half, the Friars
went ahead for good, at 8-7, as Alex Liberatore lofted a sacrifice
fly and Sam Christie, the only runner on base, daringly stole home.
Jim Bonner won in relief and faced, believe it or not, a
pinch-hitter with the name as the Friars' sister school, (Tom)
Prendergast.
PUBLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS
Washington 12, Esperanza 2 (6 inn.): Aaron Wilmer
went 3-for-4 with two RBI and as many runs scored, and his best shot
was a two-run homer to dead centerfield. Dean Grande also had three
hits, two ribbies. Tom Marano (two hits in 4 1/3 innings) and Dan
Meade (also two RBI) did the mound work. Luis Santos had both RBI
for the Toros.
Frankford 6, Franklin Towne 1: Edimil Brito's RBI single made it
2-1 in the home third while a two-run fifth featured a successful
squeeze by winning pitcher Brandon Gonzalez and an RBI single by
Francisco Bonilla (3-for-3). Gonzalez yielded nine hits and struck
out just three, but his teammates played errorless ball.
GAMP 11, Northeast 3: Jimmy Coin went 2-for-3 with four RBI, Dom
Raia went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI and Anthony DiVincenzo
fanned six while allowing eight hits. Luis Contreras managed two
hits for the Vikings, who failed to advance to the semis for the
first time since 2001.
Central 14, Edison 3 (5 inn.): Central scored five runs in the
first inning, then exploded for seven more in the second as Kevin
Pfeifer provided the highlight with a grand slam to center. The
Lancers scored their runs on just seven hits. Pete Rowe pitched
three no-hit innings and Pfeifer fanned two in one relief frame.
Edison's Joshua Fontanez collected two hits.
MAY 24
CATHOLIC LEAGUE PLAYOFFS
FIRST ROUND
Judge 5, SJ Prep 4 (11 inn.): Kevin Conroy smacked a mammoth solo
homer in the first, capped a three-run home seventh with an RBI
groundout and singled to plate the winning run in the 11th. He also
got the W with four shutout relief innings, escaping two hairy jams
to boot. Jim Delaney scored the tying and winning runs. Matt Stahl
(single) and Greg "Buddy" Brooks (double) delivered RBI hits for
Prep.
La Salle 7, O’Hara 0:
C.J. Burns went the distance, held the Lions to four hits and struck
out seven while walking none. On offense, the Explorers were paced
by T.J. Burgmann, who was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in.
Carroll 6, Lansdale 0:
Seamus Finnegan went the distance while striking out three, walking
none and holding the Crusaders to four hits. He also contributed
three hits and an RBI while Greg DiSanto added a pair of singles and
an RBI. This game likely helped to establish a city record for
biggest run turnaround in consecutive games between the same
opponents, at 22. Just four days earlier, Lansdale had hit seven homers
vs. Carroll while frolicking, 16-0.
Kennedy-Kenrick 5, Conwell-Egan 3: Jimmy Volpe pitched a
six-hitter with 10 whiffs (most ever in Kenrick/K-K's postseason
history), Joe Harvey went 3-for-3 with a double
and one run scored, Sal DiPrinzio laced a two-run single and A.J.
Koscelansky stole home after a pickoff throw was made to first. C-E
scored on Daulton George's two-run double and Matt Petrizzi's
sacrifice fly.
PUBLIC LEAGUE
CLASS AAA FINAL
Franklin Towne 4, Philadelphia Electrical 1: Ryan Kubacki
pitched all seven innings, held the Chargers to a lone single,
struck out seven and walked two. Kevin Racek and Tim Hart combined
for three RBI. Chuck Fitzgerald pitched five innings and struck out
10 while walking five and collected Philadelphia Electrical’s only
hit in the fourth inning.
CLASS AA FINAL

Carlos Gil tossed a complete-game two-hitter, struck out 10 and
walked two. Luis Santos went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, Felix

with a single, a double and an RBI.

sixth-inning, two-run double as the Blue Devils scored six runs.

Hubbard earned the win after pitching six innings with three hits,

strikeouts -- he walked five, plunked two -- and delivered an RBI
single. Joe Coppola's two-run single erased a 2-1 deficit in the
third. Masterman scored two in the first on a walk, HBP, wild pitch
and two-run infield error. This one doubled as the D-12 A final
while advancing GAMP to the overall Pub playoffs.
CLASS AA SEMIFINAL
