D-Blockk & Tackle Darnell
"D-Blockk" Harris, a former
basketball player for Northeast High (class of 2005), has become quite the
football fan. He has asked to cover games this season and, at the good, ol' dot.com,
that's all it takes. |

PUBLIC AAAA RED
Frankford 40, Northeast 34 (OT)
Well, this was the last division game of the season and the Vikings
had already
clinched 1st place by beating GW, Bartram and Overbrook. As for Frankford,
they were trying to move into third place with a win! With all that said, this
game turned out to be a classic overtime game and here is how it all went
down. The Vikings received the ball first and went three and out. Frankford
started at the 50 and all it took was a run up the middle for
RB Jeffione Thomas and he scored. The Vikings' next possession
ended by LB Taron Mills intercepting a pass from star QB Malik Stokes and
Frankford had the momentum. Frankford moved downfield quickly (all running
plays). It was 1st and goal on the 5 and QB Michael McGroarty went
for an option play. He was smacked by LB Gary Prince and the ball came loose,
and
S/RB Tyleel "TNT" Taylor darted downfield for an 87-yard fumble return
TD. The
Vikings led 7 to 6 due to a missed PAT by Frankford. Things got ugly
for the Vikings for the next 2 quarters as Frankford scored three unanswered
rushing TDs by RB Tyrell Martin, RB Zaire "BAM" Anderson, and McGroarty. At
the end of the third quarter the score was Vikings 7 and Frankford 28, as
Frankford relaxed and thought this game was over, the Vikings had other
plans as they showed a lot heart in the 4th quarter. Here's what happened: Stokes
threw a 17-yard pass to WR Eric "FLAV" Brundidge, then it was a 12-yard run
by Taylor and a 10-yard run by RB Eric Hines. Frankford finally answered
back with a rushing TD of their own and decided to go for 2 pts and failed.
The Vikings, still riding momentum, answered back with another TD to Brundidge and
the Vikings was a PAT away from an amazing upset. But the PAT was missed and
with 12 seconds left on the clock it was time for overtime. Frankford scored
on the first running play and the Vikings, after bad snap made for horrible
field position, went out on all passing
plays, and that was all she wrote!
Notes: Vikings lost for the first time in 5 games, which is bad because the
playoffs are next week. But they showed a lot of heart late in the game, as
they will get ready for a Friday night game against Martin Luther King. As
for the Pioneers, they won two straight for the first time all year and they
will be riding that in to the playoffs and they get ready for their matchup
with Germantown.

PUBLIC AAAA RED
Northeast 27, Bartram 16
This game was important for the Vikings as they beat visiting Bartram Braves
for their first class AAAA game and also the senior game for the Vikings.
Bartram received the ball first in good field position due to a failed onside kick
attempt, but the Vikings played good defense and got the ball back. They marched
downfield with the running of sr. RB Eric Hines and star D-1 prospect sr. QB
Malik Stokes, who went 7-13 for 95 yards and 9 carries for 45 yards.
They
got down to the 15 and Stokes called his own number and scored on a
keeper. Then the Vikings played good defense again and drove down to
the Braves' doorstep, on the 2, and Stokes again ran it in for a score. The Braves did march downfield on their next series and threw a
couple of passes and then, before you knew it, sr. Al-Haqq Shabazz ran it in from
6 yards out, and the Braves were a TD away from being tied. The Vikings
seemed rattled by the TD by going 3 and out, but that was when their stingy
defense (4 turnovers) came up big. Soph. RB Brandon Jones ran to
the outside and was met by fr. RB/CB Marquis Edwards. As Edwards smacked
Jones the ball came loose and jr. DE/TE Deion "I'm Catching Everything"
Barnes picked the ball up and ran it in from 16 yards out. NE was led on
the ground by the duo of Hines and sr. RB Tyleel "T.N.T" Taylor. Hines ran
for 109 yards on 20 carries and Taylor ran for 89 yards on just 8 carries;
all in the second half due to an ongoing injury. The Vikings sealed the deal
when Taylor got the ball and darted up the sidelines leaving everybody in the
dust for a 53-yard TD.
Notes: Vikings looked good running and passing the ball, but they won't celebrate
too much as they have to focus on their rematch with George Washington. They
lost in three OTs last year for the Pub AAAA title. As for the Braves, they
showed some heart in their loss to the Vikings, and they have a matchup with Frankford

NON-LEAGUE
Northeast 13, Bensalem 12
My first game reporting for the 2009 football season was a good one
for the Vikings as they beat Bensalem, 13-12. The Vikings were led by star SR.
QB Malik Stokes, who went 9-15 for 107 yards and 2 TDs; he also carried the ball
7 times for 40 yards. His first TD pass came in the 2nd quarter, a 12-yarder to
JR. WR Rashaun Sligh on a slant across the middle. The other TD came early in
the 4th and it was a 12-yard fade to JR. WR Deion "I'm Catching Everything"
Barnes in the back of the end zone. Leading the way for the Vikings on
ground was star SR RB Tyleel "TNT" Taylor, who had 36 yards on 8 carries
(all in the first half do to a injury). Bensalem did show signs of life after
getting the ball on their own 20 yard line due to a muffed punt by FR. RB
Marquis Edwards. QB Tim Farlow ran a 4-yard TD to make it a
game. Then they marched downfield and RB Lewis Vincent ran 2 yards for a TD,
only to see Bensalem miss the extra point. But the Vikings went three and
out and Bensalem was marching again. They marched to their 30 yard line and
Farlow dropped back for a pass and it was tipped up in the air by Barnes and
intercepted by one of the Vikings' D-linemen and that was all she wrote.
Notes: As the Vikings celebrate their first win of da season and first
win for new Head Coach Chris Riley, they will focas on their game
against Bartram under the lights on Friday night. That'll be their first class
AAAA league game of the season.
