NOV. 28
THANKGSGIVING RIVALRY
Neumann 68, Southern 0
  A complete mismatch. Not enough talent and not enough manpower for Southern.
Ram Coach Bill Edger knew this coming into the game. He told me before the
game that he would try and milk the clock and keep the ball on the ground as
much as possible. Southern went three and out on their first two possessions,
while the Pirates scored twice for a quick 14-0 lead. During the Rams'
possessions, Neumann Coach Ed "Bubby" DiCamillo repeatedly kept yelling out
to referee Tom Young that Edger's squad was taking too much time in the 
huddle. This made Edger smile, shake his head, and utter quietly, "Come on
Bubby, you gotta be kiddin' me." Finally, on Southern's third chance with the
ball, Young threw a flag for a delay of game penalty. After enforcing the
violation, Young walked over to Edger and said, "Maybe that will shut him up
for a while." Good job, Tom. That was the only delay of game penalty.
Question? Did Bill Gelman, from the South Phila. Review, and myself, really
hear someone from the Neumann sideline scream "hurry-up" to the Pirate
offense with just under two minutes left and a 68-0 lead? I hope not! Sr
FB/LB Jimmy "Trolley Car" Porreca, 15-177, 4 TDs, became the school's all
time single season rushing leader, finishing the year with 1667 yards. The
previous mark was held by Len Nelson in 1983 with 1,642. Exciting Jr RB/DB
Billy Canady returned the second half kickoff 77 yards for a TD. He finished
with 121 return yards. So FB/LB Alvin Dill, 8-48-TD, and So DE Alfred Meacham
each made 4 tackles, including a sack and a tackle for a loss. Neumann rushed
34 times for 321 yards. They did not attempt a pass, other than a 2 point
conversion, the entire game. The Pirates limited the Rams to 21 yards of
total offense, 14 rushing, 7 passing. Many plays resulted into negative
yardage. Sr RB/DB Darrell Horton, 13-43, paced the Rams. Sr RB/LB Mark Lee, 5
tackles-1 loss, punted 7 times for a 30.3 average. Jr LB Gerald Terry made 6
tackles for Southern. The Pirates did not punt all day. They attempted 3 PATs
from the 18 yard line due to two excessive celebration penalties and an
unsportsmanlike violation.

NOV. 21
NON-LEAGUE
Bok 24, Edison 6
   Bok's Sr RB Akeem "Feathers" Green, 29-227, set the school single game record
for yards, and also the season record 1,009. Green went 98 yards on the
games' first play from scrimmage, giving the Wildcats a quick 6-0 lead. The
score remained the same until Jr RB/DE Cedric Green, 9-52, scored from 18
yards out. Jr QB Allen Major's 7-52, 2-5-6, conversion pass to Jr End
Marcelluas Barnes 1-5, put Bok ahead 14-0 early in the second quarter. The
Owls answered quickly, marching 64 yards on just 7 plays. QB Keenan Nelson,
9-17-103, completed 4 of 6 passes in the stretch, capped off by his 7 yarder
to WR Devon Weston 5-56. (The P.A.T. failed). Neither squad could mount much
of a drive the remainder of the quarter and the half ended with the Wildcats
in front 14-6. After stopping Edison on downs at the Bok 39 yard line with
just over 8 minutes left in the third quarter, the 'Cats went 61 yards on 14
rushing plays. Feathers ran 10 times for 52 yards. The drive ended with Major
sneaking in from the one yard line. Green added the conversion run, giving
Bok a 22-6 advantage on the first play of the final quarter. Nelson would
intentionally run out of the end zone in punt formation with just over 1
minute left on the clock, giving the Division "D" champs a 24-6 lead. Edison's
Luke Torres, 9 tackles - 2 for losses, and David Eshun 7, paced the Owl
defensive line.
Linebackers Carlos Maldonado, 7-1 sack, and Jovan Acosta, 5-2 TFL, along with
DB Nelson, 6, also pitched in. The Wildcat denense limited Edison to 15 yards
on 17 rushing attempts. Cedric Green, 7-1, and Jr DB Kenny Major, 6-1, paced
the defense. Barnes (2), Sr T/DT Alex Montero and Sr LB Ethen Simmons all had
tackles for losses. Jr CB Tarif Henry had a sack. Bok rushed 48 times for 342
yards. There were no turnovers the entire game.
Roger's Ramblings:   When seeing the small number of players during Edison's
warmup. "They're too small and too few, similiar to Custer's Last Stand."

CATHOLIC BLUE SEMIFINAL
West Catholic 55, St John Neumann 48
  Joe McFadden, my able sidekick, and I, headed over to Northeast High to check
out our Alma Mater, the Burrs of West Catholic take on St John Neumann.
Having mostly covered the Public League I really haven't seen much of the
Catholic League. I did, however, see West play North Catholic early in the
season. I told Joe prior to the kickoff that I wanted to exclusively watch
West Caholics' RB Curtis Brinkley and DB Jonathan Jackson, two highly touted
players for the Burrs. That idea went out the window when suddenly an Arena
Foolball League game broke out. The game was too entertaining to just focus
on two players. Brinkley was very impressive, 26-240-4 TDs, in the open
field, creating numerous missed tackles. When thinking of great High School
backs I go no further than O'Hara's Kevin Jones. Jones had size and a very
quick "First Step" when he first touched the ball, two things that I feel
Brinkley is missing. However, take nothing away from this kid. His jukes and
moves are second to none. When I saw Brinkley early in the season most of his
yards were as a result of his ability alone. In the North game he received
little if any help from his offensive line. In this game the line was much
better and fullback Chester Roebuck also helped with his blocking. For the
Pirates, Jr QB Jon Brady, 15-29-236-3 TDs, displayed a nice accurate arm and
a nice "touch" when needed. Sr WR Jack Hatty failed to come up with a tough
catch early in the game, but brushed it off, telling Brady, "It's my fault,
but keep 'em coming, I'll get the next one." Well, he got more than one. He
grabbed 6 for 99 yards and 2 TDs. I liked fullback Jimmy Porreca's approach
to running. He basically runs straight, like a trolley car. He commuted 24
times for 159 yards and 3 TDs. He also caught a 10 yard TD pass from
Brady.

NOV. 14
PUBLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINAL
Central 23, Bok 14
  Central's Michael Yeiter returned Bok's Navy-style opening kick, off the foot
of kicker Cedric Green, and returned it 13 yards to Bok's 48 yard line. Seven
plays later it was 7-0 after a 12 yard run by Jr RB Duane Williams. Kicker
Ryan Abrams added the extra point. During the drive Jr FB/LB Quindel Ladson,
17-102-TD, carried the ball 5 times for 28 yards. Midway through the first
quarter Ladson would fumble the ball after being hit by Bok's Sr LB/G Ethen
Simmons. Simmons had 8 tackles including one for a loss. The Wildcats Jr
WR/DB Hakim Leach recovered the loose ball at his own 25 yard line. The Home
squad would then hold onto the ball for almost ten minutes and cap off their
75 yard drive on an Allen Major 5 yard TD pass to Leach. Bok failed on the
conversion run and trailed 7-6 with 8:32 remaining in the second quarter.
Less than three minutes later it was 14-6 after Ladson went in from 10 yards
out. Abrams once again added the P.A.T. Forty seconds after the Lancers
scored, Bok's Jr RB/LB Cedric Green, 6-103, raced 72 yards to the end zone.
Majors' conversion pass to Jr End Marcelluas Barnes, 2-22, knotted the score
at 14. The score would remain the same until the fourth quarter. With 7:37
remaining in the game Central's Stephen Moore blocked a Green punt. The
Lancers' Mark Savage appeared to catch the ball in the air and run a couple of
steps before being hit by a host of Wildcats. The ball came loose and was
recovered by Bok. Everyone on the sidelines and in the stands thought Bok
would retain possession on their own 45 yard line, because Savage became a
"runner" after catching the ball. The referees ruled otherwise, giving the
ball to Central, explaining that Savage had "muffed" the ball and never
really had possession. Bok coach Tom DeFelice went crazy after Referee Ernie
Gallagher explained to him that the official on the Central side of the field
ruled the "muff". DeFelice was upset because he felt Savage had his back to
the official and the ref couldn't possibly see Savage juggle the ball. Three
plays later Central Jr QB Marcel Quarterman faked on "option pitch" and fired
a 45 yard strike to a wide open Eric Heisler giving the Lancers a 20-14 lead
with 6:18 remaining. Abrams P.A.T. kick was blocked. Bok couldn't move the
ball on their next possession and was forced to punt. Central didn't do much
on their next series and was facing a third and 13 at the Bok 48. On third
down, Quarterman dropped back and then rolled to his right and found Sr RB/DB
Chris Williams, 8-43, on the right sideline, picking up 20 yards and a first
down with 3:25 left to play. Six plays later Abrams completed the scoring
with a  33 yard Field Goal that just made it over the crossbar. Central's Sr
LB Leon Richardson ended any Bok hopes by intercepting a Major pass with
just under a minute to play. Richardson had a good day with 7 tackles, 2 for
losses, and a fumble recovery along with his interception. The Lancer defense
tightened up in the second half, limiting Bok to just 19 yards rushing, on 10
attempts. Major completed just 2 of 11 passes in that span for 11 yards. Bok
had just one first down in the second half. It came on their third play early
in the third quarter. Along with Richardson, Linebackers Masai Lord, Dominic
Glover-Williams and Ladson combined for 18 tackles, with Williams adding one
for a  loss. For Bok, Cedric Green recorded 10 tackles at his End position
and Jr CB Tarif Henry had 7 with two for losses. Marcelluas Barnes, 3-2
losses, dropped a 24 yard Major pass in the end zone with 1:41 left in the
first half. Quarterman finished 3-5-1, 71 yards. Leach had the pick. Major
was 4-15-1, 11 yards. The Lancers were in punt formation just once all day.
They never got it off because of a bad snap. Boks' Cedric Green punted 4
times for a 22.5 average. Akeem "Feathers" Green, the 'Cats leading rusher
for the year, rushed for 60 yards on 18 attempts.
  Roger's Ramblings:  "Central has always been known as a brainy team. They
haven't made a mistake since 1945 and that was in an intrasquad game."

NOV. 9
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Bok 20, Southern 0
   The Rams gave the 'Cats a first half score as Bok led by just 8-0 at
intermission on a 1 yard sneak by Jr QB Allen Major, 6-23 2 TDs, and Akeem
"Feathers" Green's conversion run. Green had a big day carrying 22 times for
152 yards and a TD. His 1 yard TD came at the 5:38 mark of the third quarter
following a fumble recovery by Jr DB/DB Marcelluas Barnes at the Southern 13
yard line. Barnes had 5 tackles with 2 for losses. Sr T/DT Alex Montero made
6 tackles with a sack and Jr RB/LB Cedric Green, 8-41, registered 5 with 2
sacks. South Phillys' Shamir Kase, Akeem Moore, Ryan Williams and Mark Lee
all pitched in with 6 tackles apiece. Bok Coach Tom DeFelice said that
Southern's two defensive backs, Kase and Jr Steven Rudd, were the two best his
squad faced all year. Nine players ran the ball for Bok, the smallest being
Sr Vincent Vicchairelli. He's listed at 5'6" - 135, but appears to look
smaller. He bounced right back after being grabbed by his face mask and
thrown to the ground by the Rams Jr RB/LB Gerald Terry. A 15 yard penalty was
called. Bok had no returns the entire game, due mostly to South Philly's 
punter Mark Lee's high spiraling kicks. Lee punted 4 times for a 31.2 average
but had punts of 46 and 41 yards.

PUBLIC LEAGUE
Bartram 20, West Phila. 6
  Bartram's Chironn "Goober" Davis took the opening kickoff 73 yards down to
the West Philly 14 yard line. The long return seemed only appropriate as the
Return Category for the Braves would generate the most yardage (184) of all
the offensive categories by both teams. Bartram's Sr SE/DB Alvin Tate
returned a punt 59 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter to break
a 6-6 tie. Sr SE/DB Randall Eggleton intercepted Speedboy QB Jalil Harris' ,
6-15-4 74 yards, pass in the fourth quarter and returned it 48 yards for the
final touchdown. Harris had three other passes picked off. Tate had two and
Sr DB Hanif Long had one off Harris and one off Sheldon Ford (2-3-1) 25.
Bartrams' Davis would only rush for 40 yards in 15 attempts as he was tackled
repeatedly by Jr LB Akeem Bradshaw, 12 tackles, who had great success
shooting the gaps all afternoon. As it turned out, Bartram's Marvin Snipes
12-48 would be the games leading rusher edging out West Philly's Gerald Dove
8-48. The Speedboys would be credited with just 29 total rushing yards.
Harris' 3 (-30) dropped the number considerably. Bartram had 80 yards on 34
rushes while Sr QB Todd McCoy completed 4 of 9 passes for 76 yards. There were
17 penalties in the game. Bartram 9-75 and West Philly 8-60. West Phillys'
William Ortiz averaged 37.6 yards on three punts. Omar McLaurin caught a 28
yard TD pass from Harris for the Speedboys' only score.

PUBLIC LEAGUE
Bok 20, Mastbaum 10
  The Wildcats clinched the Division "D" title with the win. Sr RB/DB Akeem
"Feathers" Green (18 carries, school record 223 yards, 3 TDs), had a huge day.
Green had three first half TDs 64, 75 and 43 yards, while running 10 times for 197 in the
half. He also intercepted a pass. His first two TD runs were simple dive
traps, however his third was the most exciting. He took the handoff from Jr
QB Allen Major 2-6-23 and headed toward the right sideline. When he noticed
that area was all congested he ran to the middle of the field. There wasn't
much room there either and he appeared to be stopped by a host of Mastbaum
players. It was at this time that my able sidekick Joe McFadden called out
the numbers of the would be tacklers thinking the play about to be over. I
started to record the numbers when I heard a loud Whoooaah from the sideline.
I looked up and discovered that Feathers had broken free and was on his way
for a 43 yard TD. The one thing I really like about him is his vision when he
has the ball. He waits for his blocks and always seems to choose the correct
area to run. Bok's offensive line includes Sr Center Kenny Hartery, Sr RG
Vincent Trama, Sr RT John Brown, Sr LG Ethen Simmons, Jr LT Aaron Hayes and
So End Sean Jessup. Mastbaum So QB Markies Tavares 8-19-1, 129, TD looks to
have a bright future for the Panthers. He continuously found Jr WR/DB Jovan
Pratt 5-66 open in the middle of the field. Pratt registered 5 tackles on
defense. Jr DE/DB Marcelluas Barnes was productive at two positions for Bok
on defense. Starting the game at Defensive End, Barnes had 2 tackles for
losses in the first half and put plenty of pressure on Tavares. He had to
switch to Defensive Back when Jr WR/DB Hakim Leach went out with an injury in
the second half. Barnes did a good job there making 6 tackles. Four out of
the five scoring plays were as a result of a turnover. Mastbaum's 38 yard
field goal from David Pough was set up by a Pough fumble recovery. Their 17
yard TD reception by Jr TE/DE Mark Brighter, 4 tackles - 1 sack, occurred
shortly after Bok punter Joseph Desalis failed to handle the long snap from
center. Green's final two TD runs came after a blocked field goal by Jr CB
Tarif Henry, and a fumble recovery by Jr LB/DE Dauyon Burroughs on a kickoff
return.
  Roger's Ramblings: As mentioned in my last report, I will try to bring you
some comments made by Bok's number one fan Roger Durbano. While
re-introducing himself to Joe McFadden's Dad Joe Sr who he hasn't seen since
last football season: "I just want to let you know that my record is now
250-0 as a sideline coach". Sitting in the coaches office after the  game he
overhead Bok's star running back Akeem Green asking Coach Tom DeFelice for
tokens so he could get home: "You don't need tokens today, we got a limo
outside waiting for you."

OCT. 26
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Dobbins 35, Lincoln 14
  Local TV News stations have their "Friday Night Fly Bys" for High School
football games. How about a "Saturday Morning Swing By"? This weekend contest
was over in an hour and forty minutes. It featured just one assessed penalty
(5 yards Dobbins). The only other flags were a pass interference against
Lincoln, which was refused after Dobbins Jr WR/DB Aaron Gary made a 40 yard
reception. Two other flags were thrown when two kickoffs went out of bounds
and the ball was placed on the 35 yard line. Dobbins ran just six offensive
plays in the second half. Lincoln started the third quarter with a 13 play
drive against the Mustang's seond defense. But when they got inside the ten
yard line, Dobbins Coach Doug Macauley called for his goal line defense and
the drive was halted at the three yard line. The next play Dobbins Sr
RB/DB-K/P Khalif Boldin  7-166 went right up the gut for a 97 yard TD, his
third of the day. His ensuing successful extra point kick gave the Mustangs a
35-0 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter. Lincoln got
on the board with two fourth quarter TD's from Jr RB/DB Bernard Franklin
22-74, including a one yard run and a 59 yard reception from Sr QB Brahim
Bilal 2-5-1-68. Franklin also had 2 returns for 73 yards. Dobbins Jr QB/DB
Maurice Whitaker was a perfect 5 for 5 for 140 yards, 2 TD's, both going to
Sr WR Jamar Rowley 3-98. Dobbins PA Man Rich Yankowitz arrived in the booth
midway through the first quarter and greeted the crowd with "Hey, Hey, sorry
for the delay, the voice of the Mustangs is here to stay". Also, after a
Dobbins player (number 66) made a tackle late in the game, Yankowitz
discovered that he didn't have the player on his roster, so he just said
"Play is made by an unknown tackler". That unknown player was Akeem Brown,
who later broke up a TD pass intended for Lincoln's Daniel Tucker. Following
that play everone knew who number 66 was!

OCT. 25
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Bok 20, West Phila. 6
   People familiar with Division D football say that when Bok plays Bartram
there are always plenty of good hard hits from both teams. Justifiably so,
with the winner of that game usually ending up as the division champ.
However, as an observer of Bok football dating back to the early 1980s,
when the late Charlie "Pops" Guida was in charge, I say Bok vs West Philly.
Once again I wasn't disappointed. Bok limited the Speedboys to 34 yards on 24
rushing attempts. However, West Philly QB Jalil Harris had some success with
completing 7 of 18 passes for 107 yards with a TD strike of 23 yards to Steve
Pennycook. Harris also threw two interceptions. One was picked off by Bok's
Jr WR/DB Hakim Leach. Leach was covering Pennycook along the left sideline
when the ball arrived from Harris and both players leaped at the same time.
Leach wrestled the ball away from Pennycook in midair and went 65 yards for a
TD giving the Wildcats a 12-0 lead at the 6:14 mark of the third quarter. Sr
RB/DB Akeem "Feathers" Green 22-118 TD made the other interception. Bok's Jr
QB Allen Major completed just two passes for 52 yards. One was a 23 yarder to
his twin brother Kenny resulting into a TD. On that play Allen fumbled the
snap, but had the presence of mind to pick up the ball while not permitting
his knee to hit the ground. He then quickly avoided the rush and found his
brother alone in the end zone. Akeem Green's conversion run finalized the
score with 7:07 left in the game. West Philly's CB Omar McLaurin, 8 tackles -
2 loss, and DL Shane Foskey 7-2 led the defense.
   Now for the first time I present "Roger's Ramblings". Roger is Roger Durbano.
Durbano is a loyal supporter of all South Philly teams including Bok,
Southern, Neumann, or any other youth team, stick ball or wiffle ball squad
from the area. He also gave Bok's Akeem Green the handle of "Feathers". By
the way, he also is very funny and comes up with some quick one-liners. Here
are just a few: Commenting on all the clothes he's wearing on a chilly
afternoon, "I got more layers on than a Termini Bakery Wedding Cake". After
seeing that Bok would kick off with the wind, "Ahh, I see we're going with the
wind....Wasn't that a classic"? Speaking on his skepticism of Bok's pass
defense, "Our secondary is unbelievable, sometimes I can't believe what I see
(sic)". That's it for the time being, but I hope to bring you more from my
next South Philly game.

PUBLIC LEAGUE
Bartram 19, Southern 0
  With about three minutes remaining in the third quarter, Line Judge Dave
Parfitt said to me, "Man that job's tough enough (Stats) today it must be
like having dental surgery". The reason for his statement? A one sided game
and 22 total penalties accounting for 235 yards. In the third quarter alone
Bartram had 7 penalties- 90 yards and Southern registered 4 for 55. The 3
o'clock game ended at 5:15. Those familiar with the "Pub" know that most
games are less than two hours. On the day Bartram was penalized 12 times for
127 yards. Southern was penalized 10 times for 108 yards. The Rams could
muster only 18 offensive yards on 27 rushes. They had zero passing yards, but
netted 101 yards on returns, the longest being Sr TE/DB Akkeem Moore's 17
yard fumble return out of the end zone. Moore scooped up the ball after
Bartrams' Sr FB/LB Marvin Snipes, 9-59 fumbled near the goal line. For a
brief moment it appeared that Moore was going coast to coast, but he simply
ran out of gas at his own 37 yard line. Southern's Sr Punter Mark Lee was
very impressive with his foot. He punted 6 times - 30.5 avg. If you take away
his 11 yards, which was partially blocked by Bartrams' Sr OG/DF Kennis Jones,
his average would have jumped to 34.4. His towering 44 yards had me
considering bringing a stop watch to his next game so I could record his Hang
Times. (Note: I think I'm getting carried away with this Stat stuff). The
Braves Sr QB Tod McCoy completed 7 passes - TD in 12 attempts for 121 yards.
McCoy was 5-6, 106 in the first half. Sr RB/DB Chironn Davis 15-76, TD, also
caught 2 passes for 37 yards.Bartram Sr LB Kajaun Mack made 4 tackles but 3
were for losses with a sack. For some parts of the game I thought I had gone
back in time after hearing chants of "Ali, Ali, Ali" on the Bartram sideline.
The calls were for Sr OT/DT Ali Linder, 6 tackles - 2 losses. Snipes also
duplicated Linders numbers 6-2. For Southern, Sr LB Justin Digby led the way
with 8 tackles - 1 loss and So LB Maurice Carter hit all the categories with
6 tackles, a hit to cause a fumble, a fumble recovery and an interception.
Former Bartram player of the early '70s, Tom Schick attended the game. Schick,
who now resides in Texas, was in town due to the death of his fater. Being
from Southwest Philly myself, as was Tom, I knew that he had played for
Bartram and later played at the University of Maryland as an offensive
lineman. I assumed he also played the same position in high school. I was
wrong. Tom explained to me that then Coach Frank Conway had him at
quarterback, which never worked out for him. In his last year Conway switched
him to linebacker. He only played 4 games due to an injury. However, for some
reason a tape of one of the games showed up in Conways' office. Conway sent
the tape to the University of Maryland. The rest they say is history. Tom was
offered a scholarship on the spot. He later was rated first team All
Conference by the Atlantic Coast Conference Coaches. I believe he also was an
All-American Honorable Mention candidate.

OCT. 11
PUBLIC LEAGUE
Frankford 20, Washington 6
  On a fourth and goal from the six yard line, Frankford's Arnold Mullins
missed on a 23 yard field goal attempt. However, the Line Judge threw a flag
for Too Many Players on the Field against Washington. Apparently one of the
Eagle players was unable to reach the sideline before the snap. The penalty
gave Frankford first and goal at the three yard line. The Pioneers scored on
the next play. A three yard pass from Sr QB Darrell Turner, 6-13-71, to Sr TE
Adam Hartman 3-20, for the games' first score. Washington Coach Ron Cohen went
ballistic. He raced down the sideline screaming at the official, "You don't
make a call like that. Not in a game in these conditions." The game was
played in a steady drizzle all afternoon. "That's why you'll never do a big
game", he continued. I had to laugh. Isn't Frankford versus Washington one of
the biggest rivalries in Division A? Washington later tied the score on a 2
yard run by Sr RB/DB Andre Odom, 4-8, with 16 ticks left on the first half
clock. The second half began with a bang as Frankford's Sr RB Mikal Jones,
19-107, took the half's first handoff 70 yards for a TD. The two point
conversion was successful and the Pioneers led 14-6. The score stayed the
same until 30 seconds remained on the game clock. There was plenty of action
in between. Frankford's Jr DE Ervin Hook was a monster on defense. His
crushing hit on Washington Sr RB/DB Larry Turner, 15-83, caused a fumble
which Hook recovered. After the recovery, Frankford was able to hold onto the
ball for over 9 minutes. Although the 17 play drive ended on a missed field
goal, the Pioneers were 4 for 4 on third down conversions. The long stretch
seemed to take the starch out of the Eagles. Hook, who make 10 tackles, 2 for
losses, later intercepted Sr QB/DB Marcus Kennedy's (4-10-69) pass which set
up the games final TD. Watch out for Washinton's So RB Jerry Butler, 3-41.
Butler has great speed and should be a factor later in his career. Sr LB
Jameel McClain, 12 tackles, was very impressive moving his 6'2" 240 lb. body
all over the field. It caused one fan to holler out, "There goes that number
52 again", which is McClain's number. Finally, the Frankford PA announcer
needs a better vantage point to view the action. He constantly calls out
incorrect player numbers and yard markings.

PUBLIC LEAGUE
Bok 8, Bartram 6
  Bok took the opening kickoff and drove 60 yards capped by Jr QB Allen Major,
5 yard TD run. (9 carries - 22 yards and 2 of 3 passing for 30 yards on the
day). So HB Ralik Charity took a reverse handoff for the 2 point conversion.
Bartram answered quickly with a drive of thir own, scoring on a 44 yard run
by Sr RB Chironn "Goober" Davis (12-91). Bartram coach Frank Natale elected to
kick the PAT figuring the scoring on the day was far from complete. The
attempt by Kennis Jones was wide right. So, with just under five minutes
remaining in the first quarter, the scoring was done! Midway through the
second quarter, Bartram's Sr QB Todd McCoy (5-7, 56 yards) completed a 32 yard
pass to Sr SE/DB Larry Aikens for a first down on Bok's 13 yard line.
However, two plays later McCoy fumbled the snap from center and Bok's Sr DL
Michael Zanghi came up with the ball at the bottom of the pile. The Wildcats
never relinquished the ball until time expired to end the half. Sr RB Akeem
"Feathers" Green (22-62) carried the ball 5 times for 25 yards and the two
first downs during the stretch. The 'Cats failed to earn a first down in the
second half. Bartram had two in the later half. The Braves threatened late in
the second half, penetrating down to the Bok 9 yard line with 1:11 remaining
in the game. On third and seven Bok's Sr DE/TE Marcelluas Barnes, Jr NG
Manarre Archie and Jr LB/DE Cedric Green forced a McCoy pass to an ineligible
receiver, resulting into a penalty with a loss of down. Natale then called on
his kicker for a 36-yard field goal attempt. Jones' kick was short and wide
left. Bok finished the game with two kneel downs to kill the clock. Cedric
"The Other" Green was a monster on defense, playing both linebacker and
defensive end. He totaled 12 tackles with 3 for losses. He had help from
Barnes, 5-1 loss, Jr CB Tarif Henry (4-1) and Sr LB/G Ethen Simmons, who came
up big at the end of the game with 4 tackles, 1 loss.

OCT. 4
NON-LEAGUE
Northeast 20, Roxborough 8
   Roxborough's Jr LB Kyle Earls had 7 tackles in the game's first seven and a
half minutes. He had 15 for the game and 12 unassisted. He could have had
more, but missed some action due to a groin injury. Jr RB Dante Bryant took
the games' first handoff for a 65 yard TD. It was Roxborough's only TD.
Bryant finished with 104 yards on 7 carries. After that initial play, yards
were hard to come by for the Indians.They accumulated just 56 more additional
yards for a combined total of 121. Northeast's Jr LB Chris Zukowski advanced
an errant Roxborough pitchout for 26 yards and returned an interception for
25 yards. Jr LB Warren Bartlett led the Viking defense with 7 tackles,
including a sack. Anthony Campbell, Mike Donnelly, Solomon Isom, Bryan Adamson
and Khalid Berry were one big force on the defensive line, combining for 19
tackles, 5 for losses and 4 sacks. Roxborough's Jr QB Clinton Taylor 3-10-1,
38 yards, was on the run all afternoon retreating for -51 yards on 13
possessions. It was kind of strange to look on the Roxborough sideline and
not see long time head coach Cliff Hubbard. Cliff is just out of the hospital
recuperating from surgery. Get Well Soon Cliff!! We Miss You!!

NON-LEAGUE
Ben Franklin 28, University City  0
   The game was not much of a contest with not much offense.
University City accumulated just 5 total offensive yards in the first half
and 123 yards for the game. Franklin had only 64 in the first half and 147 on the day.
A blocked punt by Sr LB Ryan Coffey set up Franklin's first TD (A 6 yard run
by Sr RB/LB Jestin Brisbon, 8-47). Sr RB/DB Jesse Edney (3-33, TD) recovered
the ensuing kickoff and scored four plays later on a 22-yard burst.
University City's Sr RB Bruce Hill led the Jaquars with 58 yards on 7
carries. He was denied a long TD jaunt when he was caught from behind by the
Electron's Coffey. Sr TE/LB Bryant Jennings paced the Franklin defense with 5
tackles, including 2 sacks. So LB Anthony Williams registered 5 tackles for
U.C. The two big surprises of the day were the unbelievably good field
condition after the huge amount of rain. Also, the two point-after kicks by
So Michael Anderson raised some eyebrows.

SEPT. 19
NON-LEAGUE
Frankford 38, Germantown 32 (2 OTs)
   How does a team score 38 points and not run a play from scrimmage in the
first quarter. Easy! Return a kickoff in that quarter for a TD (Cornelius
Mosley, 77 yds.) and score 12 points in overtime. The Pioneers were led by Sr
RB Mikal Jones, 18-145, 3 TDs. Jones was spectacular in the second half
running 15 times for 132 yds. Sr QB Darrell "D.J." Turner, 10-13, 123 yds showed
plenty of poise in the pocket and uses his tall frame, 6’6”-210, as an
advantage to find receivers downfield. Scrappy Sr TE Adam Hartman -- 5 catches
81 yds, TD, seven tackles out of his safety position -- is a pleasure to
watch. Germantown Sr RB Taurean Filmore, 23-162, 2 TDs tried valiantly to
pace the Bears, who led 26-14 with 9:08 left in the fourth quarter, but
couldn’t hold on. Germantown showed plenty of energy
for three quarters, but appeared to be tiring the remainder of the contest.
Several G-Town players had to leave the field for a play or two with some
minor bumps, bruises or cramps. Sr OT-DT Dorian Brewer at 6’4” - 378 lbs had
some difficulty dealing with the heat. (83 degrees) Coach Mike Hawkins had to
use a timeout so Brewer could catch his breath. However, Brewer opened some
huge holes and pancaked some people early in the game. The Bears had a nice
16 play, 93 yd drive in the second half capped by a 1 yd TD run by Jr Omar
McDonnaugh, 6-30. The march consumed almost 9 minutes of playing time.
Frankford tied the game at 26 with 1:17 remaining in the fourth quarter on a
7 yd run by Jones. Both teams scored in the first overtime. Ryan Graves on a
1 yd run for G’Town and Jones again for Frankford on a 10 yd run. (Both failed
on their conversions) The Bears had first shot in the second OT, but Graves’ pass
intended for Sr End Akil Stokes, 2 catches for 72 yds and a TD was intercepted
by Sr LB Ervin Hook. It took Frankford just two plays to end the affair, finalized on a 3 yd
run by Jr FB Cristien Richardson.
