NOV. 8
PCL AA FINAL
Neumann-Goretti 32, West Catholic 14

Everything eventually comes to and end, right? But how many people outside of those close to the N-G football program thought that West’s 52-game Catholic League winning streak (8 straight league championships in Blue, then AA) would end on this night? Probably no more than a handful, if that, is my guess. In all, counting the regular season, playoffs, and two subregional contests the Burrs had frolicked their way to 54 straight league wins that stretched over parts of nine seasons. During the streak they outscored their opponents 2,284-to-478 (42-to-9 average). Their last lost came in the middle of the ’06 season at the hands of Conwell-Egan, 26-12. Even this season West had outscored their league opponents 204-to-40 (41-to-8 average) in five games played. In the teams’ first meeting West scored the games first 30 points before allowing a couple of fourth quarter scores in a, 30-13, victory. So, how did the Saints beat West for the first time since ’03 (10 games) and win their first football title since 1954? Simple! Their leaders played like stars and the complimentary players all made contributions. Was West overconfident, especially since star sr. QB Antwain McCollum returned to action after suffering a broken lower leg six weeks ago? Maybe a tad, but yours truly didn’t sense that on the sidelines prior to the game. Plus, thinking something on those lines might take away from N-G’s great night. Quite frankly, the Saints outplayed West for large stretches and when given the chance to do something that no team has done in eight+ seasons, they stepped on the Burrs’ throats and never let go. Ok, we’ll have more on the end-of-the-streak as the days go by, but for now it’s time to pay homage to the Saints. For my money, there were a handful of sequences that were instrumental in N-G’s win. First, West had started the scoring on a 27-yard run by soph. RB Calil Wortham after a muffed punt by the Saints (recovery by soph. DB Ahmad Kent). Then, on the subsequent kickoff another muff occurred and West’s jr. DB WR/DB Jameer Bryson made the recovery at the N-G 25-yard line. From here, three rushes produced a 1st-and-goal for the Burrs at the 8-yard line. Needing a play sr. DE Matt McKeown stripped the ball from Wortham and soph. DE/WR Emil Moody recovered and returned it 32 yards to the 47-yard line. If the Burrs cash in there and go up two scores then it’s possible that the mindsets of both teams change. The Saints didn’t score off of this turnover, as they stalled at the WC 26-yard line, but they tilted the field and it stayed that way for the remainder of the half. N-G tied the game early in the second quarter on a 1-yard sneak by sr. QB Ray Lenhart. They would grab the lead with 4:57 left in the half when jr. RB/DB Khalil Roane, who was sensational throughout, uncorked a 46-yard gallop. The next huge sequence for the Saints came after the Burrs had regained the lead to start the second half. West needed just six plays, all rushes, to travel 65 yards. Wortham unleashed a 47-yard rumble to begin the drive, then sr. RB/DB Kharee Ruley ended it with a 5-yard burst. Ruley also provided the conversion run to give West a brief, 14-12, lead. I say brief because the Saints only needed four plays to cover 86 yards on their next series. The key play here was a 55-yard pass between Lenhart and dynamic soph. WR/DB Aamir Brown on a 3rd-and-8 play from the 16-yard line. A roughing the passer call was tacked on and that brought the ball to the West 14-yard line. From here, jr. RB/DB Miles Brewer easily got the left edge and scampered home. Brewer added the conversion run and N-G took a 20-14 lead with 6:31 left in the third quarter. Another huge moment for the Saints came on WC’s next possession. The Burrs held the ball for twelve plays and had a first down at the Saints’ 19 yard line. However, a delay of game on West pushed them back to the twenty-four. Then, on third down Moody and jr. DL Amire Tyler combined to sack McCollum, who fumbled. N-G’s sr. Ol/DL Joe D’Emilio recovered. Soon after this, the Saints were faced with 3rd-and-8 early in the fourth quarter. They converted as Lenhart hit Moody along the left sidelines for 24 yards to the West 37-yard line. Next, N-G would have a 4th-and-5. Again, they made the play they needed to, as Lenhart calmly and perfectly found sr. WR/DB Takeem Ford down the right hash for a 32-yard score with 8:23 left. Great throw! West would fail to convert on fourth down from the N-G 48-yard line on their next chance. For the Saints there was only one thing left to do. Cement this baby! Again, on third down they came up with a gigantic play. This time Roane raced 40 yards to the West 5-yard line. Two plays later, Brewer slid in from the one. Hey, Brewer touched the ball three times and every time he found the end zone (One conversion). Talk about making the most out of your chances. West had a late chance to score, but failed to do so. As the final seconds began to wind off the clock it was easy to predict how the Saints and their fans would react. Extreme jubilation! And rightfully so. The Saints ran 54 plays and amassed 383 impressive yards on a Burrs’ defense that in five other league games only allowed a total of 393 yards on 204 plays. Phew! The 32 points scored by the Saints is the most scored against West in a league game since 2002 when they beat Neumann, 55-48, in a wild playoff game. This was a 87-game span! Only one other team had reached as much as 30 points against West in this time (Wood, 30-12, in ’05 final). As I said earlier, there are many headliners for the Saints on this night, but right at the top of the list is Roane, who used patience and savvy in turning 31 totes into 209 yards. Only seven times during the streak did West yield a 100-yard rusher and the top rusher here only went for 143 yards (Wood’s Bob DeLucas in ’07). Talk about getting hot at the right time, but Roane has set a season-high in rushing yards in each of the last four weeks; 110 (vs McDevitt), 162 (vs LC), 170 (vs LC), and the 209 tonight. Roane’s totals pushed him over the 1,000-yard barrier. The first N-G rusher since 2006 (Mark McPherson - 1,306) to accomplish this. Congrats! He had plenty of help from the boys up front in this one. I’m almost certain that the N-G staff would state that this was the OL’s best performance of the season. These members included: sr. C Mario DelVecchio, G’s jr. Rashid Saunders and jr. Naquise Childs, and T’s D’Emilio and jr. Pat Banning. Rugged sr. FB/LB Michael DiFrancesco blocked feverishly throughout, as did McKeown at TE before leaving with a knee injury. Best wishes to Matt. Lenhart finished 6-for-14 for 164 yards. He went 4-for-4, for 113 yards in the second half. He was in control and settled all night. The brassy Brown notched four catches for 108 yards. Defensively, DiFrancesco led with 8 tackles (7 solos). Jr. LB Fabian Matthews was solid and next with seven stops. The rangy Moody was active with 1.5 sacks, while forcing one fumble (Recovered by Ford) and recovering another. Also contributing were; Brewer (six tackles), Tyler and sr. LB Jack Taylor who evenly split eight stops, sr. DL Joe Herrin (injured in 2nd half) notched a sack, and Brown made three stops and had three pass defends in the secondary. For West, emotions really let out at the end of this one. In some cases it was tough to watch. The Burrs played without sr. WR/DB Ahkil Crumpton (school related issue) and it’s hard to imagine that his absence wasn’t felt. As mentioned, McCollum returned and though he looked healthy, rust was evident. He only managed a single yard on 21 plays where he was directly involved (1-for-10, 18 yards passing). He took the loss very hard, but needs to remember that he had a terrific career that witnessed him become the school’s all-time leading passer. Keep your head up, kid. Wortham paced the offense with 123 yards on 16 carries, while Ruley (9-49) and jr. RB Sharif Fennell (3-53) posted respectable numbers. Interestingly, West’s 14-season streak of producing a 1,000-yard rusher, easily the longest amongst city teams, came to end. Let’s stick the knife in a little further. Smile! Ruley ended the season with 881 yards. On defense, West was led by jr. LB Amir Postley and sr. DB Dave Swen who each posted nine stops. Jr. DL Tymir Oliver registered a sack and two other TFLs. Ruley added six tackles, while jr. DB Craig Jones notched five stops and four pass defends. Sr. LB Neil Satterwhite had a sack. Neumann-Goretti will play Prep Charter this coming weekend for the D-12 2A City Title.

This is the first time in the TedSilary.com era that every Inter-Ac team can boast of having a 1,000-yard passer. Over the last three seasons, out of 18 chances, the league has produced 15 1,000-yard passers. In the previous 12 years, that number was 23. Last year, I-A passing yards totaled 9,102. The next closest total was 7,023 in 2009. This year's total is already 8,919 (counting yards by subs).
Note from Ted: This is the first season ever for 1,000-yard passers at all I-A schools.

NON-LEAGUE
West Catholic 18, Ryan 7

Over the past three games, Ryan star sr. RB Samir Bullock had literally run wild over opposing defenses. He had amassed 856 yards rushing, including 674 in the last two weeks with a pair of 300+ yard outings. So, when he carried 9 times for 43 yards, and a 2-yard score on Ryan’s first drive, I’m sure many in attendance thought here we go again. Not so fast! The Burrs' defense adjusted and pretty much held the talented Bullock at bay for the next three-and-a-half quarters. Using a team approach, with spirited play, the Burrs made Bullock work for everything he got. Bullock did manage 99 yards, but needed 28 totes to do so, and only managed 56 yards on 19 carries after that first drive (11-26 in 2nd half). Also, just once did the speedy, shifty back manage more then 10 yards on a single carry. West’s defense was excellent in shutting out the Raiders over the final 42:49 and holding them to 132 yards on 53 plays. Rotation members on the D-line consisted of: Jr. Tymir Oliver (5 tackles), sr. Jeromy Reichner (6 tackles), soph. Savion Perez, jr. Charles Trabi, and sr. Greg Nathaniel. Linebacker members were sr. Neil Satterwhite, jr. Amir Postley (7 tackles), soph. Marque McDuffy (8 stops), jr. Curtis Fredrick, and sr. Demond Brunache (sack). In the secondary, they used sr. Kharee Ruley (8 tackles; 2 pass defends), sr. Dave Swen (9 stops, 8 solos, INT, & 4 pass defends), sr. Ahkil Crumpton, jr. Craig Jones, and soph. Ahmad Kent. This group earned their keep tonight. Well done! Offensively, the Burrs methodically churned out 291 yards. Jr. QB Josh Holsopple continued to fill in admirably for injured sr. Antwain McCollum, and most likely had his strongest performance of the season. He finished 10-for-15, for 112 yards. All three of West scores went to soph. RB Calil Wortham (12-41) on short runs of 3, 3, and 6 yards. The Burrs got on the board with 4:49 left in the second quarter. They started the drive at the Ryan 33-yard line after a fake punt went awry. Holsopple hit Jones for 13 yards, then ran for 8 & 3 yards to put the ball at the Ryan 9-yard line. Wortham scored his first TD two plays after this. The Burrs would have another golden opportunity to take the lead after Swen returned an interception to the Ryan 6-yard line. Alas, they were faced with a 4th-and-inches near the goal line, but a procedure call pushed the ball back to the five. Finally, a pass to the end zone was broken up/dropped and Ryan survived the scare. West’s go-ahead drive started late in the third quarter at Ryan’s 24-yard line. After one first down out to the forty-two, the Burrs were hit with a personal foul penalty which brought them back to the twenty-seven and facing a 2nd-and-19. From here, Ruley (13-116) ripped-off a 59 yard run to the Ryan 14-yard line. A horse collar and another personal foul at the end of the run brought the ball to the three-yard line. Wortham scored from here to make it, 12-7, with 1:23 left in the quarter. West’s game-sealing drive started with 6:23 left in the game and starting from their 20-yard line. Key plays included a 33-yard connection between Holsopple and Crumpton on a 3rd-and-6 chance. Crumpton (60 yards on 7 touches) made a terrific catch over a bigger defender in the middle of the field. Two plays later, Crumpton took a reverse for 13 yards to the Ryan 29-yard line. From here, Wortham rushed for 4 yards, Ruley for 5 and 14 yards, and then Wortham again for a 6-yard score with 2:06 left. Ryan would reach the West 40-yard line, but four incompletions ended the game with :53 seconds left. For Ryan, Romano went 5-for-18, for 39 yards. Defensively, sr. LB/FB Bobby McDevitt played a strong game with 12 tackles (9 solos; sack). Sr. DB Seneca Williams and jr. LB Jason Wagher evenly split 14 stops. Ryan will have week off next week before tangling with Bonner-Prendie in one 3A semifinal. The Burrs will take on Conwell-Egan next Saturday at O’Hara. It will be part of the PCL 2A semifinals; with Lansdale/Neumann-Goretti in the other game. Meaningful games are right around the corner. Man, where did this season go?

CATHOLIC AA
West Catholic 41, Conwell-Egan 0
Two major miscues at the end of Conwell-Egan’s first two drives spotted the Burrs a pair of touchdowns and from here they methodically pulled away in the second half. First, C-E’s jr. QB/DB Jarrett Patman fumbled while being sacked by sr. LB Neil Satterwhite with soph. LB Marque McDuffy making the recovery at the C-E 35-yard line. West did need nine plays to cover the necessary yardage, as sr. RB/DB Kharee Ruley trotted in from the one-yard line. Three plays earlier, Ruley converted a 3rd-and-10 with a 18-yard dash on a delay through the middle. C-E’s next possession ended with a three-and-out and a punt. The punt ended up being a good one with the ball rolling out of bounds around the West 30-yard line. However, C-E was called for holding on the play and had to punt over again. The Burrs brought the house and when the punter briefly bobbled the ball it forced him avoid the rush. West sr. DB David Swen tripped up the punter at the one-yard line, as the play lost 14 yards. On the next play, Ruley provided his second TD in as many possessions. From here, the Eagles hung tough into the second half. They actually forced a Burr punt to start the half. Then, courtesy of two West 15-yard penalties moved the ball down to the Burrs’ 20-yard line. Alas, the drive would stall here as jr. DL Tymir Oliver and jr. DE Curtis Fredrick combined to sack Patman and McDuffy batted down a fourth down pass. To start West’s next series Ruley raced around the right edge 48 yards to the C-E 25-yard line. Three plays later, West converted a 3rd-and-13 when jr. QB Josh Holsopple hit a wide open jr. WR Jameer Bryson down the middle of the field for a 28-yard score. The following kickoff produced a muff, as Swen belted the C-E return man trying to field the kick on a bounce. Jr. DB Justin Bryant made the recovery at the C-E 17-yard line. Four plays after this soph. RB Calil Wortham bulled in from the one to make the score, 27-0. Fourth quarter touchdowns for the Burrs were provided by sr. WR/DB Ahkil Crumpton on a 39-yard speed sweep and a 9-yard rush by jr. RB Sharif Fennell. The Burrs defense dominated throughout and held the Eagles to just 35 yards on 38 plays. C-E’s only passing yards came on the game’s last play, as Patman hit soph. TE/LB Brandon Cohen for ten yards. The Burrs had five sacks in the game and eleven totals plays that went for negative yardage. Sacks went to Satterwhite (two), McDuffy (6 total stops), jr. LB Amir Postley (5 tackles), and the one split by Oliver (6 tackles) and Fredrick. Swen added five stops, while jr. DB Craig Jones made an interception. Jones also went 5-for-5 on PATs. I’m pretty sure you have to go back to the ’08 season to find out when the last time this happened. West used a running back by committee and received solid production from Ruley (12-88), Fennell (8-56), and Wortham (10-48). Holsopple ended 6-for-15, for 59 yards. This marked the eighth straight season the Burrs have finished the regular season unbeaten in league play. For C-E, sr. RB/LB Joe Ruggiero played a solid game on both sides of the ball. He finished with 62 yards on 17 carries. He had a nifty 27-yard scamper in the early-going. Later he added roughly a 50-yard run on a reverse, but the play was wiped out on an illegal block. Only five other plays not involving Ruggiero went for positive yards and those only accounted for a total 17 yards. On defense, Ruggiero notched a sack amongst his six total stops. Sr. LB Wyett McLeod and soph. DL Keanan Baines (6’2”, 285-lbs) evenly split fourteen tackles. Meanwhile, jr. DB Danny Taylor and Cohen evenly split ten stops.

OCT. 17
CATHOLIC AAA
Wood 56, Bonner-Prendie 7

On the game’s first play from scrimmage Wood lined up in their traditional heavy look and ran a toss to star sr. RB/DB Jarrett McClenton. OK, so you see the final score and now you’re probably thinking that McClenton dashed in for a long score, right? Not so fast. He managed just a yard, as jr. DB Shaun Douglas and soph. LB Hunter Ragin combined on the stop to excite the home faithful. In hindsight, that was probably mistake. How so? Well, on the next play the Vikings and jr. QB Anthony Russo went to the air. Then they did it again. And again. And again... Man, what an assault this young man put forth. Russo went onto toss SEVEN touchdown passes. Yes, seven! All came in the first half. Phew! This tied a city record with Germantown Academy’s Sean Grieve in ’02 and Springside Chestnut Hill’s Paul Dooley last season. Interestingly, those guys did it over four quarters in shootouts. GA bested Hun School in Grieve’s, 55-44. While Dooley fell to Malvern, 63-50, in a wild one a year ago. I’m not sure what amazes me more. The fact that all of Russo’s TD passes came in one half, or that Wood’s powerful rushing attack actually went seven scores without finding the end zone a single time. There final score last week was also a TD pass. So, that’s a streak of eight via the pass. I can’t imagine that this program has ever had a string of eight consecutive touchdowns come on passes. Crazy, huh? Russo went 5-for-5, for 225 yards in the first quarter alone. Four of these completions went for touchdowns. First, he hit a WIDE OPEN Christian Lohin downfield for a 61-yard score. Next, he found soph. WR/DB Mark Webb with a picture-perfect strike on a 53-yard fly pattern. Touchdown #3 came on a 12-yard swing pass to McClenton (Tremendous block on the outside by sr. G Tom Cardozo). Closing out the first quarter carnage was a 70-yard heave to sr. TE/LB Jake Cooper. Two plays into the second quarter the onslaught continued, as Russo completed his sixth pass in as many tries for his fifth TD. And talk about spreading the love. This one went to jr. WR James Gillespie for 53 yards. If you’re scoring at home then you’ll notice that his first six completions went to six different players. The lone player not to find the end zone was sr. FB Alex Arcangeli on a 29-yard catch. B-P briefly restored some order when sr. QB Collin DiGalbo rumbled in from three yards  to make it, 35-7, with 2:53 left in the half. But any thoughts of a comeback were quickly squashed, as Wood went 77 yards on five plays on their subsequent drive. Again, the Russo-to-Gillespie combo found the end zone. This one covered 42 yards. Soon after, Webb was making a spectacular over-the-shoulder interception, his second of the game. This led to Russo’s final scoring pass of the contest with no time left on the first half clock. This time he found Lohin for 9-yards on a nicely executed drag route across the end zone. All total, Russo passed 11-for-15, 369 yards. Yes, that shattered a Wood passing record, which was previously held by Joey Monaghan (295 yards) in ’10. Their were major breakdowns in B-P’s secondary throughout the night, as many of Russo’s targets were running free. Still, he showed some nice zip and a dynamite deep ball throughout. It was almost effortless. Also, check these numbers out. In the last two weeks Wood has outscored their opponents 97-13 in the opening half. Russo has played three quarters in these two games and is a mind-boggling, 21-for-27, with 526 yards and 9 TDs. Gillespie ended with 4 catches for 111 yards. With the running clock going in the second half the Vikes found the end zone one more time. Soph. RB Shawn Thompson (6-40) provided this with a one-yard plunge. For the second straight week McClenton’s (6-21) exploits weren’t really needed. However, he did provide a terrific highlight-reel type play that was wiped out on a penalty. Showing excellent concentration and good hands, he calmly made a terrific over-the-shoulder catch on a deep punt. He bobbed and weaved 92 yards for the a score. Alas, an illegal block-in-the-back wiped it out. Wood’s line was once again beastly. this unit included:  sr. C Jack Kenney, G’s Cardozo and sr. Shawn Scroger, T’s sr. Ryan Bates and jr. Kurt Stengel, with sr. Dan Coyle rotating in. Defensively, jr. LB/DE Mack Scwartz (6 totals stops) notched a pair of sacks. Lohin also added a first half sack. In the second half, frosh. LB Adrian Lambert twice forced fumbles. One came on a sack that lost 20 yards. These recoveries were made by jr. DL Mike Hoelsworth and soph. DB Rhys Vaughn. Cooper and jr. LB Sebastian Silva evenly split ten tackles. For B-P, their do-everything DiGalbo only played in the first half and had sporadic success. He rushed 14 times for 45 yards, while only passing 3-for-12, for 17 yards. Defensively, jr. LB Ryan George, S. Douglas, and soph. DB Brandon Bettole each made four tackles. B-P only mustered up 89 yards of offense on 44 plays. Meanwhile, Wood rolled to 476 yards on 37 plays. Penn St. Head Coach James Franklin made a brief appearance and even had time to snap off a few pictures with people in attendance. Included in this were members of the Bonner baseball coaching staff: Joe DeBarberie, John “Lefty” McCauley, and others. I believe this pic is being sent to Ted for TS.com exposure. Smile.

CATHOLIC AA
West Catholic 39, McDevitt 6

So, Halloween is still a few weeks away, right? You would have never known it tonight as the Burrs and Lancers did battle at Cheltenham H.S. Man, did we have some strange, eerie, and bizarre-like happenings in this one. For starters, the underdog Lancers scored first. Sr. RB/DB Vincent DiLeo burrowed in from the five to cap a 10-play, 65-drive. Three Burrs’ penalties, including a pair of fifteen yarders (West ended with 13 penalties for 110 yards) aided the cause. However, the Lancers key play was a 20-yard pass play to a lineman. How so? A left-side wide receiver screen was blown up by a West defender almost immediately, but somehow the ball deflected right to frosh. OL Jayvonne Campfield, who rumbled down the sidelines for a 20-yard pick-up on a 3rd-and-16 play. Just like they drew it up, right? Ok, ready for a stat oddity? McDevitt would end up running 20 first quarter plays to just one for the Burrs. Yet, they somehow trailed, 12-6, after one quarter. After DiLeo’s score, West’s sr. RB/DB David Swen sped untouched 93 yards along the left hash for an easy kickoff return. McDevitt did drive to the Burrs’ 39-yard line on their next drive, but soph. QB Max Bryson fumbled while being sacked by sr. LB Demond Brunache. Ultimately, the ball was kicked backwards and when West jr. OL/DL Tymir Oliver fell on the rock the play had lost 31 yards. From here, West’s only play of the opening quarter was turned in by sr. RB/DB Kharee Ruley, who zipped 40 yards untouched for a score. As we entered the second quarter the bizarre took over. Each team had three possessions, and each of them ended with a punt. Ok, that’s not that off.  But did a extenuating circumstance play a part in offensive ineptness? You be the judge. For approximately 8-minutes of game time and probably 15 minutes of actual time all in attendance were treated to a fireworks show from nearby Arcadia College. It was McDevitt’s Homecoming and one report was that the fireworks were supposed to go off during halftime to enhance the celebration. Another had it as being Alumni Day at Arcadia. Whatever the reason it was extremely strange. It was loud and eventually smoke from the display staked claim to the field area. Believe it or not, but there were actually two fireworks shows in the area. The Arcadia one was the longest and extensive, but catty corner from them, and over the school, a nearby carnival shot some off, too. Needless to say there was no scoring in the second stanza. As for the second half, it was all Burrs. They got much needed separation after taking the opening possession of the third quarter 67 yards on 10 plays. Early on, Swen ripped-off a 21-yard run to the BM 39-yard line. Later, jr. QB Josh Holsopple found Ruley in the flat for 16 yards to the 9-yard line. Two plays later Ruley trotted in from the one. After a Lancers’ three-and-out and punt the Burrs were in business again. Wasting little time, Ruley took their first play of this drive 55 yards on a toss to the right. Holsopple found a wide open jr. WR/DB Jameer Bryson for the conversion to make the score, 26-6, with 5:08 left in the third quarter. The Burrs would cruise from here. Early in the fourth quarter Holsopple dumped a screen to Ruley, who motored 31 yards for his fourth score of the game. After their first series McDevitt’s offense really struggled. They managed a respectable 46 yards on that opening drive, but from that point only mustered up just ten yards on their next 32 plays. Sr. WR/RB/DB Stephen Leach broke this string of misery with a shifty 39-yard sprint to the West 6-yard line. With a feel-good score in sight disaster struck on the next play. DiLeo, now playing quarterback, casually tossed a flare in Leach’s direction to the right. However, a West defender stepped in front of the pass and easily picked it off and raced 89 yards for the final score of the game. I had to double-check who it was afterwards because by this time a thick, dense fog had taken over the stadium. Yep, just add this to the strangeness of the night. Alas, it was  Brunache, who earlier had the key sack and forced fumble, that made the pick-six. Oh yeah, but speaking of strange, the Burrs converted a point-after kick following the score. Jr. K/WR/DB Craig Jones did the honors, as he somehow had enough juice to get the ball thru the fog. Smile! This was WC’s first made PAT since Game #4 in the ’12 season. Also versus McDevitt. Since then they had played 25 games and scored 114 touchdowns without a successful PAT. West gained 248 of their 305 yards in the second half. Ruley finished with 136 yards on 10 carries. Jr. Shariff Fennell (4-39) and Swen (5-39) chipped in rushing the ball. Holsopple finished 5-for-9, for 74 yards. Defensively, West allowed just 105 yards on 49 plays. Oliver had two sacks amongst his ten total stops. Brunache hustled for 7 tackles. Jr. DE Curtis Fredrick added a sack and another TFL. Sr. DL Jeromy Reichner (five; 2 TFLs) and soph. DL Savion Perez (six; 3 TFLs) were active along the line of scrimmage. Sr. LB Neil Satterwhite chipped in with five stops. Swen blocked a PAT. For McDevitt, Bryson passed 8-for-12 for 53 yards. Leading rusher DiLeo had a tough night and could only manage 21 yards on 18 carries. Leach led with 3 totes for 48 yards. Defensively, jr. LB Tyler Shelton led with 7 tackles. Leach (sack) and Campfield evenly split eight tackles. Sr. K/P Brendan Hanagan punted six times for a respectable 34.0 average.

Wood 48, O’Hara 6

On the opening kickoff  a couple of Wood return guys struggled to get their paws on the the ball, and the Vikings were forced to start the game deep at their 13-yard line. Undoubtedly, the undermanned Lions viewed this as a positive start. Unfortunately, for O’Hara, good vibes would end there. The Vikings needed just six plays to travel the 87 yards for the game’s first score. They were just getting started, as they found payturf five more times in that opening quarter in building a insurmountable, 41-0, lead. During this foray three O’Hara turnovers and a misfire on a fake punt allowed the Vikes to grab very manageable field position. They had little problem covering the needed distances. As most know by now, the Vikings are a powerful running team. Quite frankly, they often foam at the mouths in slamming the ball down opponent’s throats. However, tonight it was work-on-the-passing-game time. Twelve of the fourteen offensive plays they ran in the first quarter were passes. To start the game, jr. QB Anthony Russo connected on 4-for-5 for 84 yards. From here, sr. RB/DB Jarrett McClenton sped in from the 8-yard line on a left-side toss. Sr. DE Jeff Panara forced a fumble on O’Hara’s first possession, with jr. LB Sebastian Silva making the recovery at the Lions’ 30-yard line. Two plays later Russo found soph. WR Mark Webb (3-46) alone down the middle of the field for an easy-as-pie 29-yard score. After a pass on a fake punt fell incomplete, once again the Vikes were in business at the O’Hara 34-yard line. On first down, Russo found sr. WR John Hall for 26 yards to the 8-yard line. On the next play, he hit Webb on a right-side fade for touchdown #3. O’Hara’s next two possessions ended with fumbles. First, sr. DL Ryan Bates made a recovery on a fumble forced by Silva. Four plays after this, McClenton scooted in from the 10-yard line. Then, when a backwards pass went awry, Panara easily scooped up the loose pigskin and rumbled in from the seventeen. Closing out the scoring was McClenton on a don’t-blink-or-you-might-miss-it 56-yard punt return. The speedy McClenton turned all three of his touches into scores. I’m not sure he was touched on any of them. Russo finished 10-for-12, for 157 yards in just quarter’s worth of action. Jr. WR James Gillespie made 5 catches for 42 yards. Wood’s back-ups would provide their final score midway through the second quarter. Soph. QB Collin Gillespie hit jr. WR Joe Davis on a 10-yard slant. Earlier in the drive, soph. RB/DB Dan Freeman ripped off a 47-yard run. With Wood reserves in the game, the Lions would avoid the shutout late in the first half. Sr. RB Max Ferguson (17-65) had runs of 16 & 13 yards, then soph. QB Tommy O’Hara hit sr. WR/DB Darell Jackson (3-33) for a 21-yard score. The second half flew by with the clock running. Defensively, the Vikings had some dominant moments in the opening quarter. Jr. DE Mack Schwartz made tackles (3 solos; 1 split) on four straight kickoff returns. He also added four other stops; including a half-of-sack in that opening quarter. Sr. DL Devon Cobb shared the sack with Schwartz. Freeman hustled for six stops (4 solos). Soph. LB Matt Arcidiacono and soph. DL Joe Broderick split a sack in the second half. Meanwhile, jr. DE Pat Carroll was active with six tackles (5 solos). For O’Hara, sr. QB/DB Brandon Laughlin dinged his wrist/hand early and left after only two incompletions. O’Hara relieved him and finished 5-for-10 for 46 yards. Jackson added an interception in the second half. Jr. LB Jimmy Tulskie notched a late sack. Soph. DL Des Holmes and sr. DL John D’Amico (2 TFLs) evenly split eight stops. Usual Wood kicker sr. Dan McDonald was missing due to a soccer game. Sr. Chris Baker handled the point-after duties and finished 6-for-7. Soph. RB Shawn Thompson (3-30) handled the kickoffs.

NON-LEAGUE
La Salle 35, Wood 31

Man, what a game! Playing before a massive crowd at William Tennent High School in Warminster, the Explorers and Vikings gave all in attendance a whale of contest. Quite frankly, it was simply a fantastic game and for my money one of the best these eyes have ever witnessed. For recap purposes let’s fast forward to the last play of the first half. Moments earlier the Explorers had deadlocked things (14-14) on a sr. QB Kyle Shurmur to sr. WR/DB Jimmy Herron 8-yard scoring pass. Ahem, these two were just getting started. Anyhow, only 24.2 seconds remained in the half. Soon after, Wood speedy sr. RB/DB Jarrett McClenton returned the ensuing kickoff to the 29-yard line. Then, he took a hand-off and zipped, bobbed, weaved, and dashed his way to the LaSalle 32-yard line with a 39-yard run. This gave him 229 rushing yards to this point. Just over a second remained on the game clock, so Wood Head Coach Steve Devlin summoned sr. K/P Dan McDonald onto the field for a field goal attempt of 49 yards. McDonald’s struck the ball well and somehow it found its way to the crossbar, where it clanged upward, and calmly toppled over the right side. Extremely cool moment. As you would suspect the Wood faithful erupted and one could sense that momentum was once again snatched by the home team. Guess what? This momentum thought was indeed correct. La Salle ran just nine plays (0-for-3 via pass; 6 rushes for 9 yards) on three possessions to begin the second half. The first two ended with short punts and with Wood having possession on the La Salle side of the field. Both times they capitalized by finding the end zone. First, the Vikings needed just four plays to cover 42 yards on a 30-yard pass play from jr. QB Anthony Russo to sr. TE/LB Jake Cooper. Next, they needed just four plays to cover 43 yards; capped by a McClenton 8-yard dash. This made the score 31-14 Vikings with 4:05 left in the third. So, when La Salle’s third possession ended with them in punt formation, one had to believe that Wood would ease into a convincing victory. But not so fast, for at this time the drama police entered the stadium. La Salle’s jr. P/K Mike Raczak lofted a punt down the middle of the field and when it landed it hit an unsuspecting Wood player, who had his back to the play. Jr. LB Sam Hardy pounced quickly and the Explorers were given new life. And boy did they seize the opportunity. First, they needed ten plays to cover 50 yards to make the score 31-21 on the first play of the fourth quarter. The scoring play featured Shurmur-to-Herron for 12 yards on a left-side WR screen. The Vikings did manage one first down when they took over, but a mishandle on a center exchange stymied the drive and soon they were forced to punt; their only of the game. Taking over at their 34-yard line, Shurmur found Herron going left-to-right, and the nifty Herron sped down the sidelines for a 49-yard gain to the Wood 17-yard line. A few plays later, the Vikings were called for a pass interference call on a right-side fade to Herron. Then, on third down, Shurmur hit Herron on a well-timed slant from the five to make it, 31-28, with 5:41 left. More good fortune would go LaSalle’s way on Wood’s first play of their subsequent possession. McClenton scampered down field for a gain of 20 yards, but at the end of the play fumbled on a hit by sr. RB/LB Jordan Meachum. Tough break for the talented McClenton, as he was otherwise brilliant throughout. I was situated on the Wood sideline at the time, so I have no idea how close the ball came to going out of bounds, or who made the recovery. All you saw was an erupting La Salle sideline. The officials huddled briefly, but promptly awarded LS the ball with 5:19 left. Guess who did the recovering? Yep, it was Herron. How many game-changing moments does this kid have in career? Good buddy, Matt “Cauls” McCauley was on hand taking clutch photos and offered to walk over to retrieve the recovering info. Good hustle, Cauls. Ok, so La Salle resumed play with the ball at their 44-yard line. It took them just two plays to snatch their first lead of the game. First, Shurmur connected with Meachum for 11 yards in the left-side flat. Then, he found a streaking Herron going from left-to-right across the middle. The picture perfect toss allowed Herron to get wide and down the sidelines thanks to some solid down-the-field blocking by teammates. The play covered 45 yards and LS led with 4:50 left. Wood started their final gasp at their 32-yard line. They reached La Salle’s 45-yard line after a pair for first downs. However, they missed a golden opportunity to get even closer, if not score. On a third-and-inches chance from LS’ 47-yard line, a play-action pass saw Cooper streak wide open across the field, and roughly at the LaSalle 25-yard line. Alas, Russo’s pass was off the mark and a few yards too long. They did manage to get a new set of downs on a Russo sneak on fourth down, but their last four plays were all misfires on passes. The sequence went like this. Jr. RB/DB Nick Rinella snuffed out a left-side wheel route intended for jr. WR/DB Gianna Cruel. Then, Herron and sr. DB Mike Crone tagged-teamed a post pass meant for soph. WR/DB Mark Webb. Next, a screen pass for McClenton fell harmlessly to the ground. Finally, a deep slant to sr. WR/LB Justin Rubin was broken up by Herron with 54 seconds left. Again, who else??? A couple of knees ended it. Shurmur finished 19-for-31, for 274 yards and four scores. He was 9-for-13, for 154 yards on La Salle’s final three scoring drives. Herron made 8 catches for 132 yards. Meachum combined for 70 yards of rushing/receiving and added a 4-yard rushing TD. Jr. WR Winston Eubanks was active with 4 grabs for 50 yards. Shurmur now has 4,088 career yards in just 17 games played. Herron became the 15th city player to catch four touchdowns in a game and is now just the 6th receiver to eclipse 2,000 yards (2,087) in a career. La Salle managed 317 yards of offense. Defensively, sr. LB Aiden Kerrigan made a game-high 10 tackles (8 solos) and was rock solid throughout. Meachum added eight stops (6 solos), while jr. DL Anthony Piscopo (six), sr. DL Fletcher Grady (five), and sr. LB Ryan Brady (four) were active. For Wood, McClenton finished with 293 yards on 27 carries. Last week, he eclipsed the 3,000-yard barrier. Amazingly, he is averaging 10.2 yards per carry for his career (330 rushes for 3,380 yards). Wow! Sr. FB Alex Arcangeli chipped in with 60 yards on 10 totes. Cooper turned his four touches into 61 yards and a TD. Defensively, Cooper was impressive with a team-high 8 tackles (two TFLs). Jr. LB Mack Scwartz notched a sack. Soph. DB Dan Freeman hustled for six stops, while Rubin and jr. LB Ryan Barrett evenly split eight tackles. Wood’s talented sr. C Ryan Neher was out with a break in the wrist area. Earlier today website leader Ted Silary posted one of his cool Tedbits.  This was the the first meeting by these teams since 1998. La Salle has now won 13 straight meetings between the teams. Also, he included yardage highs in the series since 1984. Tonight, new high marks were set in all three categories: passing, rushing, and receiving.

SEPT. 26
CATHOLIC AA
West Catholic 40, Lansdale Catholic 21

After four weeks of tough, to extremely tough competition, the Burrs were probably looking forward to the start of league play. After all, they had won 49 straight versus league foes dating back to the middle of the ’06 season. In the end, they were able to garner their 50th straight victory over a league opponent (36 regular season, 12 playoffs, 2 subregional), but it was not without a fight. LC is mostly a young squad, but they are well-coached and do a very good job of staying within themselves. Not too often will you see the LC staff put their kids in positions that really don’t suit their abilities. This mindset can typically give you a chance. So, even though the Crusaders never did lead in the game, they did enter the fourth quarter only down, 26-21. For game recap purposes we’ll start here. LC made it a five point game after an impressive 16-play, 64-yard drive that ate up 7:09 of game clock. During this series the Crusaders converted a 3rd-and-10 (13-yard run by frosh. RB Matt Casee), a 4th-and-1 (3-yard run by jr. RB/DB Ryan Quigley), a 4th-and-12 (23-yard pass to 2-yard line from sr. QB/DB Joe Pinzka to Quigley), and lastly a 3rd-and-8 when Pinzka hit sr. TE/LB Eddie McKee for an 8-yard touchdown. Alas, the Burrs would seize control for good some after. Sr. RB/DB Kharee Ruley, who ran outstandingly all night, ripped-off a 31-yard return to the LC 40-yard line on the ensuing kickoff. Soon after, on a fourth down play from the one-yard line, jr. QB Josh Holsopple was initially stopped on a sneak attempt. However, he neatly tossed the ball to soph. RB Calil Wortham (11-35), who pranced into the end zone. LC would advance the ball to the WC 24-yard line, but a fourth down Pinzka pass caromed off a lineman. From here, the Burrs would need just six plays to find payturf. Sr. RB/DB David Swen had a 13-yard run, while Ruley rumbled 22 and 30 yards before providing a 3-yard touchdown with 5:06 left. LC’s last gasp ended with a interception by jr. DB Craig Jones, who returned it 42 yards for a score, but an illegal blocked wiped it out. West used four more running plays to exhaust the clock. West was without dynamic sr. QB Antwain McCollum, who will be sidelined for up to 6 weeks with a small crack to the fibula. Everyone wishes Antwain a speedy recovery. The hope is to have him back by the time the PCL playoffs begin. Holsopple filled in and despite a few nerves managed the game respectfully. He passed 4-for-8, with 37 yards, including a 12-yard scoring pass to jr. WR/DB Jameer Bryson in the second quarter. West’s ground game was able to churn out 316 yards. Ruley (2 rushing TDs), who transferred into West from Furness last January, dashed and rumbled for 201 yards on 20 carries. Multiple times he carried would-be tacklers, as well as showing solid speed at times. Swen added 81 yards on 10 totes (7-yard TD run) to compliment him. The grunts up front included: sr. C Jeromy Reichner, Gs sr. Steven Wyant and jr. Charles Trabi, Ts jr. Tymir Oliver and soph. Savion Perez, and sr. TE Neil Satterwhite. Defensively, sr. DB/WR Ahkil Crumpton and jr. LB Amir Postley (forced by soph. LB Marque McDuffy) recovered fumbles. McDuffy added a sack amongst his six total stops. Oliver led with seven stops, while Jones (six), Reichner (six), and Ruley (five) were active. For LC, Quigley amassed 208 all-purpose yards, including an exciting 92-yard kickoff return. Prior to this he neatly accepted a 17-yard pass on a slant from Pinzka for a touchdown. Pinzka finished 5-for-12 for 103 yards. Casee paced all LC rushers with 30 yards on 7 carries, and added a 43-yard reception off a swing pass in the flat. Defensively, Pinzka added an interception and 6 tackles from his safety position. Sacks were had by jr. LB Marty Dolan (8 tackles) and McKee (9 stops) and soph. DE Tyler Scheetz (5 tackles) on a combo. Soph. LB David Saulino (eight), sr. DL Chris Sniscak (six), and jr. DB Dillon Molettiere (five) were active in the tackling department.

La Salle 27, Malvern 8

So, how can a quarterback who completes nearly 70% of his passes, throws for 243 yards, and leads his team to an impressive 19-point road win over a quality opponent disappoint? Easy. He only only threw for three touchdowns, instead of the four that he accomplished in each of his team’s first three games. Ok, I’m kidding. Yes, once again, LaSalle sr. QB Kyle Shurmur (Vanderbilt) was very good-to-exceptional in his efforts. But I’m a wacko, who loves those types of stat anomalies, so I was hoping for a fourth just a little. Smile! Through four games Shurmur now has 1,174 passing yards and 15 TDs. Whoa. Project those numbers over just a ten game schedule (LS is a team with a reasonable chance to play anywhere from 11-to-15) and we’re looking at a 2,900-yards, 38-TD campaign. Both would surpass current city records. Stay tuned! And while we’re discussing records, let’s move to sr. WR/DB Jimmy Herron, who today reeled in two of those scoring passes. Herron is as savvy and nifty as any player that I have ever covered. The kid just gets it and gets it done. His second score gave him 28 for his career and allowed him to pass Chris Lorditch (Wood ’06) for the Catholic League all-time record. It also tied him for the city record held by Brad Wilson (Del Val ’10). Hard to imagine that this one won’t get shattered. Also, at Herron’s current pace other receiving marks could fall by the wayside. Again, stay tuned! As for the game, La Salle was efficient and methodical throughout. With the wind at their backs the Explorers took their opening possession 53 yards in 10 plays for the game’s first score. Big plays on the drive were a 18-yard hook-up between Shurmur and jr. WR Winston Eubanks (4-57) on a 3rd-and-6 chance. Then, on 4th-and-6 from the MP 32-yard line, Shurmur found jr. RB/DB Jared Walls for 11 yards. Finally, a 3rd-and-1 saw Shurmur connect with jr. RB/DB Nick Rinella in the flat for a 12-yard score. Early in the second quarter, a promising Malvern drive stalled when sr. RB/DB Dymond Wright came up a yard short at the LaSalle 24-yard line on fourth down. From here, LS used 13 plays to travel 76 yards that produced their second score. Sr. RB/LB Jordan Meachum did the honors with a 1-yard run. Earlier in the drive, Herron made a nice 6-yard grab along the sideline on a 4th-and-two chance to keep the drive going. In turn, the Friars would once again mount a drive, but on 4th-and-5 from the LS 18-yard line, sr. QB Alex Hornibrook (Pitt) was combo-sacked by sr. LB Ryan Brady and jr. DE Isaiah Henrich. Going against the wind and understanding that they would receive the second half kickoff, I thought LS might take a conservative approach to close out the half. Not to be. Short completions from Shurmur to Eubanks and Meachum gave LaSalle a first down at their 38-yard line. Next, Shurmur found a WIDE OPEN Herron along the numbers on the right-side of the field. Simply an easy-as-pie score that covered 62 yards with 1:30 left in the half. It’s really hard to imagine how a player of Herron’s caliber is left that open. Anyway, this gave the Explorers a commanding 20-0 lead. To Malvern’s credit they would find the end zone before half. Hornibrook completions to Wright (20 yards) and jr. RB/DB Rashon Lusane (19 yards) sandwiched a 15-yard face mask call on La Salle to bring the ball to the ten-yard line. A Wright 9-yard run brought the ball to the one as time continued to tick off the clock. Malvern got a final play off and Hornibrook scrambled to his left before finding sr. TE/LB Ryan O’Neill for the score. Alas, the Friars were called for a procedure penalty wiping out the score. but since the half can’t end on a penalty they were given another chance from the six. From here, Hornibrook nicely lofted a right-side fade to sr. WR/LB Trevor Morris (Rutgers). Sr. WR/DB James Keating added the conversion run from the holder’s position to give the Friars some much needed momentum. However, this momentum would not last long. Going into the wind, the Explorers marched 80 yards in 16 plays to start the second half. They chewed-up nearly seven minutes of game clock in the process. The touchdown was a neat back-shoulder pass from Shurmur-to-Herron in the right-side of the end zone. The chemistry between these two is off-the-charts. Offensively, the Explorers netted 430 yards of offense. Shurmur finished 20-for-29, 243 yards. Herron hauled in 6 catches for 107 yards. Meachum rushed for 85 yards on 15 carries, while Rinella added 45 yards on 12 totes. The grunts up front included: Jr. C Jimmy Morrissey, G’s sr. Robert Skowronski and jr. Matt McDermott, T’s jr. Ryan Schutta and jr. Thomas Garvin, and sr. TE Charlie Hemcher. Defensively, Brady was everywhere. He finished with 15 tackles in the game, including 9 solos. Just an inspiring effort from this lad. Also contributing on that side of the ball were; sr. LB Aiden Kerrigan (six tackles), McDermott (five), jr. Anthony Piscopo (five), sr. DB AJ Greseszak (five), and Rinella (five). Herron added a late-game pick. Jr. K/P Michael Raczak unleashed a beautiful punt that covered 47 yards and settled at the Malvern 4-yard line. For Malvern, Hornibrook finished 15-for-27 for 149 yards. Most of his completions were within five yards of the line of scrimmage and some included solid YAC, but very little downfield action was had for the D-1 signal caller today. Malvern was able to muster 282 yards of offense. Wright (5-55) and Lusane (4-30) were Hornibrook’s most active receivers. Wright also added 70 yards on on 14 carries. Defensively, soph. DB Zac Fernandez made a pick and returned it 59 yards. Lusane (8 tackles; 7 solos) forced a fumble that was recovered by Keating (6 tackles). Other notables on defense were: Morris (six tackles), and jr. DB Phil DiTrolio, jr. S Ryan Murray, and O’Neill who evenly split fifteen stops. Back to Shurmur for a second. Even when he misfires with teammates his passes still get caught. In the second quarter he threw high towards the La Salle sidelines and the ball found ballboy Joe Conner, a freshman at Conwell-Egan. With another ball in his hands he calmly secured Shurmur’s pass for a 12-yard completion. Smile. Sorry, Joe, but we can’t give you credit on the stat page, but a mention in this report isn’t too bad, right? Joe’s dad (I believe same name? Sorry, I forget) was one of the side judges in the game. Oh yeah, good hands, kid!

St. John’s (D.C.) 37, West Catholic 6

Over the years West Head Coach Brian Fluck has never shied away from a challenge or two in his scheduling. This year is no different. The Burrs opened with a solid win over Haverford School, who have since thumped the likes of Ryan and Downingtown-East. In week two, they lost a heartbreaker to traditional 4A toughie North Penn in overtime. This week a VERY, VERY good team, St. John’s of D.C., came calling. The Burrs just couldn’t match the overall size and speed of the Cadets. Next week, the Burrs will take on Wood, who is arguably the best team in the state regardless of class right now. The hope is that these tough games will have the Burrs’ ready for a deep November run at the 2A level. We’ll see if that plan comes to fruition later this year, but for now the Burrs need to be survival mode before their league schedule starts in two weeks. In this one, the Burrs fell behind quickly, 16-0, at the end of the first quarter. Quality field position was an afterthought, as St. John’s stingy defense kept that at bay early. Meanwhile, the Cadets’ offense used prime field position of their own to score twice. These drives covered only 40 and 32 yards, and ended with scoring passes from soph. QB Miles Temoney to sr. WR Will Jackson (32 yards) and jr. WR Aaron Hansford (28 yards). Sandwiched between these scores, West sr. QB Antwain McCollum was sacked for a safety. As play entered the second quarter West finally had reasonable field position at their 35-yard line, and produced a nice 8-play drive that resulted in their only score of the game. This was also the first TD that St. John’s defense allowed this season. Early on, McCollum zipped 14 & 12 yards on runs. He later found jr. WR Josh Holsopple, who made a nice one-handed grab along the sidelines, for 17 yards. McCollum capped the drive when he took a direct-snap, keeper 25 yards for the score. The West defense fought all night and their best moments came at the end of the first half and the start of the second half. First, they made a goal line stand from the one-yard line, as jr. DB Craig Jones brought down sr. WR/DB Ayron Monroe (PSU commit) for a 6-yard loss on fourth down. Then, jr. WR/DB Jameer Bryson recovered a fumble at the SJ’s 35-yard line. With the score still 23-6, the Burrs had a chance to climb closer, but the Cadets’ held on 4th-and-7 from the 32-yard line. The Cadets would put the game away afterwards with a 10-play, 68-yard drive. Sr. RB Omar Garcia (13-103) would do the honors with a hard 13-yard run. With the score 37-6, West did unleash a good drive that started at their 9-yard line. They held the ball for 17 plays and reached as far as the eleven, but McCollum fade to Bryson on fourth down misfired. McCollum (17-51) passed 7-15, for 50 yards. Defensively, sr. DB Dave Swen (seven), soph. LB Marque McDuffy (six), Jones (five; 2 pass defends), jr. DL Tymir Oliver (five), and sr. LB Kharee Ruley (five) were active in the tackling department.

North Penn 19, West Catholic 16 (OT)

Even though the Burrs under Head Coach Brian Fluck have always taken on all comers it’s rare that you’ll ever see a large 4A suburban public school take on a team two classes below them. Really it’s three classes, as West is a 1A school by the numbers, but opts to play at the 2A level. The Knights are one of the bigger schools in the state and have long been a power in these parts. Their current prowess is probably a couple of notches below past standards, but this was still a very good test for a game bunch of Burrs. And for a lot of the night West looked to be in control. After falling behind 6-0 on two sr. K Matt Amendola field goals (37 & 21 yards), the Burrs would strike twice in a 4-minute span of the second quarter. First, sr. QB Antwain McCollum connected beautifully with sr. WR/DB Ahkil Crumpton on a 81-yard touchdown pass down the middle the field. The ball was delivered perfectly and after making the snag, the speedy Crumpton was off to the races. On NP’s next series, sr. LB/WR Demond Brunache forced a fumble with jr. DB Craig Jones making the recovery.  Six plays later, McCollum unleashed a zig-zagging 28-yard keeper for a score. Just a sensational run that brought back memories of former Burrs’ star Curtis Drake ’08. Both scores were followed by conversions and the Burrs held a 16-6 lead. Amendola would belt another FG (30 yards) before to half to make it 16-9. West received the ball to begin the second half and with soph. RB Calil Wortham (14-60) and sr. RB/DB Kharee Ruley (10-53) exchanging positive gains they were able to move the ball to the NP 18-yard line. Eventually the drive stalled at the 21-yard line after 14 plays and nearly eights minutes of game clock exhausted. Moments later, North Penn’s jr. FB Nick Isabella (6-73) took a guard-trap through the middle basically untouched. The play covered 59 yards and Amendola’s point-after tied the score with 1:24 left in the third quarter. West would get the ball three more times from here and twice marched into NP territory. Neither produced a score. NP had a chance to win it in regulation, but Amendola struck a low liner off the crossbar from 22 yards with 1:53 left. In OT, NP took the ball first. A procedure call pushed them back to the fifteen. Next, were runs of seven and minus-two yards. On third down, a fade was batted away by Jones. Then, for a sixth time in the game Amendola was summoned to the field. This time he did drill the 26-yard attempt. Now, West would only need a touchdown to prevail. On first down, Crumpton was dragged down by jr. DE Korey Thompson on a speed sweep for a five-yard loss. McCollum was chased on second down and narrowly got a pass away for an incompletion. On third down, McCollum rushed for six yards to nine-yard line. On West’s final gasp McCollum was given sufficient time, and then improvised for a even a little more, but no Burr receiver could find open space. I desperation lob to the left-side, back corner of the end zone eluded Crumpton. As you can imagine many of the Burrs were distraught afterwards. But this was good experience that most definitely will prepare them for later in the year when they hope to vie for not just a league title, but a district title, and a berth in the state playoffs. For West, McCollum was elusive throughout. He finished with 230 yards of passing (8-for-15, 149 yards) and rushing (16-81). Crumpton finished with 117 yards on four catches. All total, West ran 58 plays and netted 340 yards of offense. Defensively, jr. OL/DL Tymir Oliver (6’4”, 265-lbs) was force all night, as eight of his game-high 11 tackles went for solos. Numerous times the Division-1 prospect displayed serious motor by making tackles slightly downfield. Jr. LB Amir Postley dinged an ankle that forced him out of the game for some time, but he was next with six stops. Sr. OL/DL Jeromy Reichner was next with five tackles. Sr. LB Neil Satterwhite, soph. DL Savion Perez, and Jones each made four stops apiece. For NP, star rusher jr. Nyfease West finished with 102 yards on 18 carries. Jr. QB Spencer Jones went 6-for-9 for 75 yards. Jr. LB Justin Ostopowicz (8 tackles) made an interception. Soph. LB Nick Vasger (5 stops) recovered a fumble. Thompson added a pair of sacks. Jr. DE Keith Earle (eight), sr. LB Mike Burns (seven), and sr. DL Kevin Vandenplas (six) were all active in the tackling department. Amendola boomed all five kickoffs for touchbacks. His six field goal attempts in the game just have to near some sort of record for this area. I know I have never been at a game that saw that many by two teams, let alone only one.

West Catholic 24, Haverford School 19

From 2002 thru 2011 the Burrs had opened their seasons down at the shore with games against Roman. All but one of these contests took place in Wildwood at Maxwell Field. The initial game occurred in Lower Cape May. With the threat of possible school closings, schedules were in interrupted prior to the ’12 season and the Burrs and Cahillites stopped playing one another. Now, after a two-year hiatus, West was back in Wildwood against a solid and veteran Haverford School club. At the outset I’m pretty sure West wished they were someplace else, though. On the second play from scrimmage Fords’ star RB Phil Poquie sped left for a 65-yard touchdown just thirty seconds into the game. Then, after West was stopped on fourth down at midfield another Fords’ promising series started. However, penalties (HS amassed 12 penalties for 114 yards in the first half alone) thwarted this opportunity. Still, West’s next possession ended on a deep interception by jr. WR/DB Micah Sims at the West 23-yard line. From here HS used a 36-yard scamper by jr. QB Kevin Carter to put the ball at WC’s 41-yard line. Four plays later Carter found Sims on a nicely orchestrated wheel route near the left sideline. Right after making the catch Sims used a nifty move back inside to avoid a Burr defender and easily sped 42 yards to paydirt. West would settle down on their next possession and proceeded to march 80 yards on 10 plays. Third down conversions by sr. QB Antwain McCollum (12-yard run) and sr. Ahkil Crumpton (18-yard pass from McCollum) helped set-up soph. RB Calil Wortham’s 9-yard scoring run. West would go onto to strike two more times before the intermission. First, sr. DB David Swen made a pick at his own two-yard line. The Burrs only needed nine plays to cover 98 yards to make the score, 14-12, with 48 seconds left. McCollum was HUGE throughout this drive. He passed to jr. WR Josh Holsopple (26 yards) and sr. WR/LB Demond Brunache (12 yards) for first downs. His legs did major damage on the drive, too. He had runs of 11, 17, 9, and a 24-yard touchdown. Electing to not sit on the ball, Carter was intercepted by jr. WR/DB Jameer Bryson, who returned it 24 yards to the HS 36-yard line. Wasting little time McCollum found Crumpton (5-87) down the right sideline to give the Burrs a 18-14 lead with just 15.3 seconds left in the half. Talk about a momentum shift. A penalty on the second half kickoff and a three-and-out left West punting from their end zone. HS’s sr. LB Brandon Walker stormed in from the left to block the punt. West’s sr. RB/DB Kharee Ruley did well to recover the loose ball in the end zone and prevent a possible Fords’ touchdown. The safety made the score, 18-16. HS would start their next possession at the West 50-yard line, but it ended with an interception by sr. LB Neil Satterwhite. This spearheaded another West scoring drive. This one covering 68 yards on 9 plays. Wortham (15-71) provided his second 9-yard scoring play. West had a gigantic defensive stand early in the fourth quarter. A Poquie 20-yard run gave the Fords’ a first-and-goal from the one. With sr. WR/QB/LB Derek Mountain in wildcat formation he was brought down for a two-yard loss (Bryson) and no gain (Satterwhite). On third down, HS tried a keeper with Carter and Ruley tackled him for a five-yard loss back to the 8-yard line. The Fords had to settle for a 24-yard FG by sr. Jack Soslow (belted a pair of touchbacks) with 8:03 left. HS would get the ball back twice, but failed to threaten. First, Brunache sacked, forced, and recovered a fumble on Carter. Then, with 2:57 left HS had their last chance starting from their 10-yard line. A misplay on a snap saw them lose six yards on first down. Carter did have a 11-yard fourth down run to the twenty for a new set of downs, but after a short completion three passes went incomplete. West ran the final minute off the clock from here. For West, McCollum totaled 267 yards (11-26-157 passing; now up to 3,047 for his career!!) of passing/rushing (10-110). At times he was dynamic. West accumulated 352 yards of offense. The grunts featured sr. C Steve Wyant, T’s sr. Jeromy Reichner and jr. Tymir Oliver, G’s sr. Greg Nathaniel and jr. Charles Trabi. Defensively, West forced four turnovers. Leaders in the tackling department were: Ruley (eight; 6 solos), Swen (seven; 5 pass defends), Satterwhite (seven; 3 TFLs), jr. LB Amir Postley (six), Brunache (five), and Bryson (five). For HS, Poquie was excellent with 160 yards on 17 carries. Carter had a few moments, but was mostly uneven. He passed 7-for-24 for 88 yards, but completed just three of his final sixteen attempts. He added 34 yards on the ground. He’ll experience better days for sure. On defense, sr. DL Corey Richards was a force at times. Three of his seven stops went for losses. Sr. S Lane Odom made six tackles and forced a fumble. Jr. LB Mickey Kober registered six stops, while jr. WR/DB Dox Aitken
(5 tackles) recovered a fumble. The teams combined for 29 penalties (HS with 15) that totaled 249 yards. Phew...

Roman 38, Malvern 27

One of the better parts about covering high school athletics is having the opportunity to sometimes see kids get better from year-to-year. With this mind, allow me to introduce you to Roman jr. QB Phil DiWilliams. A year ago the Cahillites suffered through major woes within their passing game. The aforementioned DiWilliams played a small part in this when given two starts early in the season against quality opponents. Neither went all that well and combined with spot duty in another game, DiWilliams managed to go just 11-for-38, 82 yards, zero TDs in the season. Alas, we turn the calendar to now in a game played at Maxwell Field in Wildwood. All DiWilliams did in this one was match the total of Cahillites’ scoring passes from last year with three. To boot added a pair of 1-yard plunges to help his team race away with an impressive come-from-behind win. All Total, DiWilliams passed 15-for-25 and 279 yards. His scoring strikes went to sr. WR/RB/DB/KR John Chaney for 21 yards that got Roman within, 13-7. In the third quarter he found sr. WR/DB AJ Frazier on a lovely right-side sprint that covered 28 yards. Just a great hook-up here. This drew the Cahillites to within, 27-25, midway thru the third quarter. Next, he flipped a middle screen to star sr. RB/DB Dimetri Kelly for 43 yards that gave Roman the lead for good at, 31-27. Frazier (6-107) and Chaney (6-83, 4-39 rush; 188 all-purpose) were his main targets. Chaney, the grandson of Temple’s legendary basketball coach, is terrific and asked to do a lot for Head Coach’s Joe McCourt’s squad. He seems to enjoy the responsibility. On the ground, Kelly was his typical workmanlike, bruising self. Using good feet, balance, and a touch of patience he routinely gets most out of his totes. He ended with 131 yards on 30 carries. Twelve of these lugs came in the fourth quarter with his team protecting a lead. For his career, he now possesses 2,746 yards. Another back who provided a key moment was diminutive jr. Humza Basil who jetted his way 34 yards just prior to the Frazier touchdown. Contributions like this shouldn’t go unnoticed. Roman ran a staggering 65 plays and netted 476 yards. Amazingly, they only managed TWO yards on two first quarter possessions. So, 474 yards came over the last three quarters. Also, they accumulated 22 first downs over those last three stanzas. Time for some grunt love? You bet ya. Sr. 6’6” 275-lbs T Manny Taylor (Rutgers) made his first varsity start. joining him at tackle was sr. 6’4”, 280-lbs Gavin Wiggins (Youngstown St.). Jr. 6’4”, 245-lbs Robert Collins was at center, while the G’s were jr. Joseph Pody and jr. Jake Doyle. Jr. FB JP Schmidt chipped in with the big boys. Defensively, the Cahillites were led by sr. DB Kenny Avallon who made pair of timely/nifty picks. Sr. DB Joe Wilson also notched a pick that sent the Cahillites’ sideline into a frenzy. Sr. LB Sam Payne (2 sacks) made six stops total. Jr. LB Tom Stevens was feisty throughout with six stops, including three TFLs. Sr. LB Marques Wright added a sack amongst his five tackles. Chaney blocked a PAT. For Malvern, things looked just swell in the first quarter as they built a 13-0 lead. They held a 24-to-6 play advantage and had already gobbled-up 166 total yards. Sr. QB Alex Hornibrook (Pitt) tossed two first quarter scores in Malvern’s hurry-up attack. First, he found a wide open jr. WR Chris Brown for 9 yards. Then, a middle screen turned into a fantastic 65-yard score to sr. RB/DB Dymond Wright, who unleashed a wicked spin move downfield, then broke multiple tackle attempts before breaking free. Truly a thing of beauty. The Friars still maintained a leads at half and in the third quarter, but frustration set in from here. After holding a 27-19 lead, Malvern watched the Cahillites score the final 19 points. Malvern’s last five possessions ended with a punt, two turnovers on downs in Roman territory, and a pair of interceptions. The Friars , who used many two-way players, seemed to run out of gas. Roman was definitely the fresher team over the final 18 minutes. Hornibrook had some good moments with four passing touchdowns, as he finished 13-for-30 and 271 yards. However, the lefty was often chased in the latter stages and completed just 2 of his final 11 attempts. Wright combined for 161 rushing/receiving yards (16-85 rush). Sr. WR/RB/LB Trevor Morris (Rutgers) had a couple of spectacular, men versus boys moments with 6 receptions and 176 yards. He unleashed touchdowns of 60 & 69 yards. Malvern had three 60+ scoring passes. The Friars ended with 373 yards of offense. Defensively, sr. S James Keating had a pick and 7 tackles. Morris (seven), jr. DB Ryan Murray (seven), jr. S Rashon Lusane (seven), and jr. LB Patrick Finley (six) were active. Sr. LB Ryan O’Neill paced the defense with 9 total stops including a sack. The Teams combined for 122 offensive snaps and 849 yards from scrimmage. There were 1,036 all-purpose in the tilt. Nothing like providing a stat guy like myself early-season juice. Cool moment as they game ended. Just as the Cahillites were raising their helmets to celebrate the win the fireworks from the Boardwalk lit up the sky beyond the field.
