Huck's Weekend Forecast
Return to Home Page

wpeD.jpg (7279 bytes)     In this space every Thursday, I am predicting final scores for every game involving city-leagues teams.
The picks are divided into three sections --
1.) Huck's Gems. 2.) Best of the Rest. 3.) Others.
I am predicting a final score on every game, and giving a brief opinion on each game in Huck's Gems. I will post total and individual category records of my selections.
   ---- Ed "Huck" Palmer

MISSION STATEMENT
My primary focus here is not to just make predictions, but to have high school football fans get a look at some of the more interesting and compelling games going around the city for that weekend. Huck's Gems won't always pit the best teams versus one another.  On many occasions, teams may not be as talented as some of the upper echelon teams, but nonetheless go out and produce some of the more enjoyable moments of the football season. For example, a Huck's Gem might include teams or team that feature a neighborhood rivalry, a dynamic offense, a bone-crunching defense, or a team who has an individual player who can create magic whenever he touches the ball. Please don't take exception if I happen to pick against your team one weekend. Remember this is all in fun. However, feedback is always welcomed.
---- Thank you, Ed "Huck" Palmer

FINAL REPORT
Alas, the football season has come to an end. I would like to congratulate Carroll, SJ Prep, and George Washington on winning league titles. How much fun would it be if Carroll and Prep squared off next weekend for the Catholic League championship? Then a week later the winner could play GW for the city crown. Maybe someday this will happen again, let's keep our fingers crossed. I just want to mention that I had a great deal of fun doing Huck's Weekend Forecast, and am already looking forward to next year. On this last weekend, I finished up 2-1, winning the CL games and losing the PL tilt. However, I came dangerously close to almost nailing the PL final. My prediction was 9-6 NE, and with 4 minutes left they lead 10-6. What the heck? I take my hat off to GW for rebounding and winning their second consecutive title. My CL scores of 31-14, Prep over Bonner, and 27-7, Carroll over wood were also in sniffing distance. Once again, I thank Ted for the opportunity to contribute something to the site that was loads of fun week in and week out.  Who knows? Maybe they'll be a basketball forecast looming. The following are my final records for each category.

          PASSING:               64.9 (#3)              38.8 (#1)

FIRST MEETING: (Oct. 12, at Wood, won by Carroll 47-8)
---There was a lot of hype entering this game, but when Wood QB John Spinosa was suspended for infractions that occurred a week earlier, the excitement quickly dissipated. The Pats made quick work of the Vikings, and scored early and often. In that game the backup QB's for Wood attempted four passes. All four were intercepted, and two were returned for touchdowns. Carroll QB Pat Brochet was 10-for-16 on the night with 192 yards. WR/DB Maurice Stovall caught 4 (1TD) passes for 115 yards, and returned one of the INT's for a score. RB Chaz Scott carried just four times, but amassed 71 yards with a score. The lone bright spot for the Vikings was RB Antonio Troisi (4-64), who scored his team's lone touchdown.
PERSONNEL:
---Carroll boasts league MVP and high D-1 recruit in WR/DB/KR Maurice Stovall. Stovall as a wide receiver has produced 29 receptions for 695 yards, and 8 TD's. However, he has been even better on defense and as a return man. He has returned 4 punts for scores, and has returned five of his ten INT's for scores. In fact, with 10 INT's Stovall has equaled or made more interceptions than 31 of the 40 city league teams, amazing!!! WR/RB Chaz Scott is a poor man's Stovall, the highly athletic jr. has combined for 969 yards rushing and receiving on the season. QB Pat Brochet will be out to prove something. Brochet completed 50% of his passes and has thrown for 1589 yards, mixing in 15 TD's(also ran for 6). The senior QB was the odd man out when it came to All-Catholic voting, and will be looking to make amends. Bruising, jr. RB James Roderick (6-1, 260 lb) has rushed for 694 yards, and scored 10 TD's. He is extremely hard to bring down. Carroll will spread the ball around with their running game, as five backs have eclipsed 250 yards on the season. Also, TE Evan Dittler (11-213) is an option, especially around the goal line and on conversions. Carroll is a not a one-man band on defense. This unit has held 10 of it's 12 opponents to eight or less points. The get solid play from their horses in the trenches. D-lineman John Vanak and Pat Kelly are very steady, while LB's Vince Lynam and Paul Rambo fill the gaps. DB's Mike Malandra (3), and Jared O'Shea (5) also have been involved on the interception frenzy. As a team the Patriots have pilfered 22. The Offensive line is led by Vanak, Dom D'Alicandro, and Joe Cocco.
---The Vikings will only go as far as brassy all-league QB John Spinosa takes them. Spinosa missed the first meeting, and will undoubtedly be looking to show that he intends to make a difference. Spinosa a thrown for 601 yards and 8 scores, and has rushed for 442 yards, with 6 scores. RB Bill Hartley led his team with 573 yards. RB's Antonio Troisi and Bob Prieto have combined for 545 yards and 7 TD's, and do a good job of complimenting Spinosa and Hartley. WR Dave Lorditch (27-429, 6 TD) was a 1st Team All-Catholic performer. Defensively, Lorditch and Hartley lead a solid secondary, but it is DL Keary Packer who will lead charge for the Vikings. Packer is one of the best down lineman in the area, and is extremely hard to contain. Packer gets quality help from fellow lineman Anthony Mora and Brian Gallagher. Jason Howard will anchor the offensive line.
PICK:
---There is no question in my mind that Wood is better than the 47-8 shellacking they took earlier this season, especially with Spinosa playing in this game. The question is how much better are the Vikings? Well, in my opinion they are good enough to hang around for a while, but their chances of stopping the dominance of Carroll is a considerable task. They will need some help, in the form of turnovers, or maybe inclement weather. One thing I want to throw out there, Stovall has only handled the ball as a rusher on three occasions. So, if Carroll were to be in a tight game late, it wouldn't surprise me if they pulled out a reverse or something with the sprinter involved. Look for the feisty Vikings to hang in there, but for Mr. Stovall to break open a tight game leading to a rather comfortable Carroll win. Carroll crowns, 27-7.

PUBLIC LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP:
GEORGE WASHINGTON (9-2) v. NORTHEAST (9-1) (Saturday, 2, at NE)
STAT PACK:                          GW                NE

OFFENSE PTS:                      25.9 (t-#3)      25.9 (T-#3)
     TOTAL YDS:                     248.7 (#3)      247.6 (#5)
      RUSHING:                       145.0 (#8)      222.8 (#1)

     TOTAL YDS:                      107.9 (#1)      110.9 (#2)
      RUSHING:                         57.0 (#1)        61.9 (#2)
      PASSING:                          50.9 (#10)      49.0 (#9)

FIRST MEETING: (Oct. 26, at NE, won by NE 8-0)
---A real defensive struggle in the first meeting. NE DT Londale Walden scooped up a Ryan Gore fumble for a 12-yard touchdown return for the game's lone score. The Vikings held Gore to just 36 yards on 9 carries. GW's QB Marcus Kennedy threw for a respectable 78 yards, on 8-for-13 throwing. Most of his success was to WR Kyle Bell (5-69). NE, though they did not score an offensive TD did have some success running the ball. RB's Darien "Party" Hardy (19-100) and Chris Poindexter (13-66) did achieve some success. However, QB James Franklin attempted just three passes without a completion.
PERSONNEL:
---NE is led by their dynamic duo backfield, Darien Hardy (141-845, 6TD) and Chris Poindexter (141-952, 16 TD). I expect both of these guys to carry the load on Saturday. It is very difficult for opposing defenses to shut down both of the backs during a game. QB James Franklin has thrown for 7 touchdowns on the year. His favorite target as of late has been WR Maurice Slaughter, who is his last three games has made 5 catches for 139 yards. The defense is led by MG Londale Walden who has an uncanny ability to make plays sideline to sideline along the line of scrimmage. He flat out dominated in NE's semifinal win over Mastbaum. Other defensive stalwarts are DE David Montgomery, LB Harry Max, DB Ryan McMillian, DB Corey Sample, and DB Eric Clark (3 INT's). K/P Steven Sandberg could be a weapon for the Vikings, the Pub's best kicker has already won one game this year and it wouldn't surprise me if he does it again.
---The Eagles, like the Vikings are stacked with quality players on both sides of the ball. QB Marcus Kennedy (64-130, 1168 yards, 15 TD's) has had a sensational year, and has two quality receivers to throw to. WR's Kyle Bell (28-560, 5 TD) and Michael Van Allen (22-444, 7 TD) have big play capabilities, and are the league's best tandem. RB Ryan Gore can pound out the yardage when fed often. Gore (110-707) has reached the endzone 15 times this year. LB Maurice Bennett leads a stingy defense. The hard hitting backer was very impressive in his teams' victory over Bartram in the semi's. Gore and Bell also standout on defense. GW also gets good play from DB's Deron Dungee (4 INT's) and Brandon Scott (3 INT's). OL/DL Jason Bermudez is a good one on both sides of the ball, and one of the team leaders.
PICK:
---I expect a low scoring game that may mirror the first outing. The team that doesn't turn the ball over, and controls field position should put themselves in good position to win. I think for GW to win, Gore will have to have 20 touches. The Eagles could fall down early and still have a chance because of how well they throw the ball. However, if NE falls behind early they could be in more trouble. NE will probably try to control the field position by running Hardy and Poindexter a good part of the game. At the beginning of the year I picked GW to win it all, and that may still happen. However, after seeing both teams in the semi's last week I left a little more impressed by NE's performance. I think a Sandberg field goal will be the difference. Vikings victorious, 9-6.

CL RED CHAMPIONSHIP (Saturday, 7, at NE)
MONSIGNOR BONNER (10-1) v. ST. JOE'S PREP (9-3)
STAT PACK:                     SJP                    MB
OFFENSE PTS:
37.9 (#1)            27.0 (#2)
    TOTAL YDS:                 397.0 (#1)          309.6 (#2)
     RUSHING:                   274.3 (#1)          192.1 (#2)
     PASSING:                    122.8 (#1)          117.5 (#2)

DEFENSE PTS:                 9.8 (#1)              14.8 (t-#3)
   TOTAL YDS:                  166.3 (#1)           249.3 (#5)
    RUSHING:                     59.1 (#1)            116.5 (#2)
    PASSING:                     107.1 (#5)           137.8 (#8)

FIRST MEETING: (Oct. 20, at MB, won by SJP 42-21)
---The game ended with a three touchdown difference, but in actuality the game wasn't even that close. Both teams entered the game unbeaten in league play. The Hawklets set the tone early and racked up 478 yards in total offense. Led by RB Kyle Ambrogi (27-182) and QB Vince Gallagher (9-for-13, 187 yards) the Prep offense was unstoppable on this night. Gallagher threw for four scores, and Ambrogi also scored four times, twice via the run and twice on receptions. The Prep D was equally as impressive surrendering a -3 yards on just 10 carries. Bonner had some success late through the air, but it was too little too late. QB Mike Stauffer was 15-for-29, for 252 yards and three scores. Not to be unnoticed was the play of WR Kevin LeSage who hauled in 11 passes for 223 yards, and a couple of scores.
PERSONNEL:
---The Prep has many weapons, but their unquestionable leader is RB/DB Kyle Ambrogi. Ambrogi has rushed for 1577 yards and 20 touchdowns. He contributes on defense as well, and is in good enough shape not to have to come off the field if need be. QB Vince Gallagher has improved throughout the year, and has made himself into a viable option. Gallagher can hurt you threw the air, as well as with his legs. He has passed for 1531 yards, and thrown 17 TD's. He has also run for 6 scores. WR's Jim Lachman (37-585, 5 TD) and Pete Chromiak (20-607, 6 TD) compliment one another very well. Lachman is the possession receiver, while Chromiak can burn you deep. Bonner found this out first hand when he torched them for a 75-yard touchdown in the first meeting. Jr. RB Pat Kaiser is a very capable backup to Ambrogi. He has run for 464 yards, and scored 7 touchdowns in mostly mop up duty. Kaiser also handles the kicking duties for the Hawklets and has been consistent. The Prep has a solid corps on the O-line, led by all-catholic John Connors. Impressive junior John Quinn and Steve Mair have also fared well in paving the way for Ambrogi and company. Defensively, DT Mike Mailey is an ox, who is extremely strong. Mailey lines up in the middle, but occasionally will rush from an end position. LB's Adam Hepp and soph. Brian Tracz are solid in the middle. Hepp is used a great deal on blitzes. Sophomore DB's Solomon Paterson (4 INT's) and Danny Jones are good cover guys, with a ballhawking mentalities. Jones is also a threat as a returner.
---The Friars started out the season throwing more than running, but since that Prep game that has changed. RB's Paul Kollhoff (178-826, 4 TD's) and Jason Smith (111-640, 8 TD's) have each rushed for over the century mark in the last three games. As a tandem they have averaged 243 yards a contest in these games, and did so against quality opposition. QB Mike Stauffer missed part of the season, but has still thrown for 918 yards, and 11 touchdowns. Stauffer is big, and has a solid arm. WR/DB Kevin LeSage is a playmaker, he has caught 39 balls for 728 yards on the season, reaching the endzone 8 times. K Chris Schrader is the league's best kicker, and has belted 7 field goals on the year. The Friars have an opportunistic defense that plays extremely hard. This unit has accumulated 21 INT's on the year. Lesage (4), also DB Chris Eccles (5), and Frank Nunan (4) are the secondary's leaders. DL Mike Kozak anchors a gritty d-line. LB Dom Armideo is a tackling machine, and always around the ball. LB/TE Joe Boland is a smart player, who sees the game very well. The Bonner O-line is led by Kozak, and all-catholic Mike Whalen.
PICK:
---This game should have a tremendous atmosphere, with plenty of support from each school's student bodies. The Friars will be looking to repeat a similar performance of O'Hara last season. Where O'Hara was thrashed in the regular season by the Prep, but rebounded nicely to win the crown in convincing fashion over the Hawklets. One problem with this scenario, I don't think the Prep will be caught off guard. This is a determined group of players and coaches who have a nasty taste still in their mouth's over last season's finale. I am looking forward to seeing Co-MVP's Ambrogi and LeSage wage war against each other, this could be legendary. I'll look for Prep to use a balanced attack to move the ball on offense. The key for Bonner will be to see if they can manage some kind of running game. They have no chance if they have solely rely on the pass. Since the Prep loss, Bonner has ran the ball and beaten three quality opponents (Judge (2), & O'Hara). The Prep is unquestionably the better team, but they were probably the better team last season. I think the game will be closer than the first, and an upset by Bonner wouldn't surprise me. However, I think the Prep wants this ring in the worse way, and with so many weapons they will be hard to stop. Prep parades, 31-14.

HUCK'S GEMS:
GEORGE WASHINGTON (8-1) v. BARTRAM (8-1) (Saturday, 1 approx. at NE)
   INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Eagles are in the top third of every statistical category in the Public League. They avg. 26.3 ppg and 256.6 ypg, both good for the #3 offensive ranking. They are #2 in throwing the ball. Defensively, they only give up 6.7 ppg (3#), 110.4 ypg (#2), 64.9 rushing ypg (#2), and are 6th against the pass. The Maroon Wave are not to shabby themselves on defense. They allow just 9.3 ppg (#5), and are 6th in total ypg giving up only 151.1. They are extremely tough in defending the pass at 36.7 ypg (#3). The teams met early this season in a game I attended. The Eagles held on for a 28-20 win at Bartram. GW held the Maroon Wave to just 16 yards on 16 rushing attempts. Bartram scored on two long returns, an 89-yard KO return by Alvin Tate and a 52-yard fumble return by Julius Caple. Bartram has only managed one TD in regulation in it's last two games. GW racked up 245 yards in total offense in the teams' first meeting. Bartram has played back-to-b! ack OT games, both victories. The Maroon Wave squeaked by King last week in OT, 6-0. While GW pasted a good Germantown team 38-14.
PERSONNEL: GW is led by the throwing of QB Marcus Kennedy (55% completion rate, 957 yards, 12 TD's) and the running of Ryan Gore (640 yards & 13 TD's). Both players had strong games against Bartram the first time around. Gore ran for 98 yards on 11 carries, and Kennedy was 7-for-12, for 113 yards. The WR tandem of Kyle Bell and Michael Van Allen has combined for 37 catches for 795 yards, and 9 TD's. LB Maurice Bennett, LB Gore, DB Bell, and DB Deron Dungee (4 INT's) are defensive leaders for the Eagles. The Maroon Wave have been without polished QB Philip Evans for a few weeks, and their offense has struggled for the most part. RB Chironn "Goober" Davis has been a bright light though. Davis has rushed for 453 yards, and 8 TD's this season. WR. Romar Drake (13-288) is a big play receiver, but has not caught a ball in the last two games. DE Joseph Smith and LB Julius Caple anchor a strong defense.
PICK: The teams did play a tight ballgame early this year, where Bartram had a halftime lead. I expect Evans to try and play, but after what I saw last week I don't know how much the ankle will be heeled. He had quite a noticeable limp. With a healthy Evans, and a strong defensive effort I think Bartram can hang around awhile. However, GW have a few more horses in their stable, and after seeing how hard the Bartram kids play firsthand, they won't be caught off-guard. Look for Bartram to struggle offensively, and for the Eagles to pull away late. Eagles erupt, 21-0.

MASTBAUM (7-1) v. NORTHEAST (8-0) (Saturday, 10:30, at NE)
   INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The thing to watch in this game will be the Panthers high potent offense do battle with the Vikings superb defense. NE holds the #1 rankings in pts allowed, total yards, and rushing yards per game in the PL. NE only gives up 3.5 ppg, and has only given up a total of 28 points all season. They have not allowed more than 8 points in any single game. Offensively, NE is not bad as well. They avg. 26.1 ppg (#4), and are the leagues #1 rated rushing the ball team at 218.5 ypg. Mastbaum offense has been flying just about all season. They are #2 in ppg (28.1), #1 in total offense (270.1), #3 in rushing (189.8), and can throw the ball with the 3rd rated passing offense in the PL. Defensively, they only give up 9.5 ppg (#6), and are 4th against the pass. The teams have one common opponent, Dobbins. Last week NE beat Dobbins 21-7, and early this season the Panthers lost to them 24-18 in OT, for their only loss of the season. Mastbaum had to go to OT to! beat Bok last week, 12-6. The Vikings have posted four shutouts this season.
PERSONNEL: NE is led by RB's Chris Poindexter (97-677) and Darien "Party" Hardy (105-696), who have combined for 18 TD's. The defense has been dominant throughout the season. They are led by MG Londale Walden, LB Harry Max, LB Adam Bostick, DE David Montgomery, DE Joe Tizol, and DB Eric Clark. They are fast and aggressive. Matbaum relies heavily on RB/LB Chris DeShields who is one of the best players in the city. He has rushed for 1140 yards this season, and scored 21 total TD's. Last week he propelled his team into the semi's with a 14-tackle performance. QB Mark Hansberry is also capable. He has completed over 55% of his passes for 631 yards. His favorite target is WR Tony Dyches (23-349). LB Troy Gillard, LB Mark Hobbs, DL Russell Kubach, and DL Sean Straub stand out on defense.
PICK: The Panthers possess probably the league's best player, but from top-to-bottom NE may have the best team. Playing on their home field will not hurt the Vikings. Mastbaum has put points on the board all season, but have not seen a defense such as the one they are about to see. NE is battled tested, and has quality wins over Frankford, GW, and Dobbins. Northeast numbs, 28-6.

NEUMANN (6-5) v.  CARROLL (9-1) (Friday, 7:30, at PW)
   INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Pats bested the Pirates 28-0 down in south Philly early this season. They dominated defensively holding SJN to 14 yards on 20 rushes, and just 39 yards in total offense. Carroll could only muster 96 rushing yards themselves, but produced 160 yards through the air. To say that Carroll has dominated the CL Blue would be an understatement. They hold #1 ranking in all eight offensive and defensive statistical categories. They score 37.3 ppg, and only give up 2.9 ppg. Total yardage they avg 316.3 yards on offense, but only give up 87.3 on defense. The numbers are staggering!!! Neumann can play defense, as they give up just 15.3 ppg. They are tough against the run, allowing just 93.8 ypg (#3). Carroll has four shutouts on the year, and their defense has picked off 17 passes.
PERSONNEL: AC is led by one of the finest players in the state in WR/DB/KR Maurice Stovall. Stovall (26-614, 23.6 avg, 8 TD's) has excelled at the WR position. However, he can hurt you in many ways. He has 7 INT's, returning three for scores, and has returned 4 punts. AC have four RB's that have gained over 200 yards this season. James Roderick (87-449) and Chaz Scott (57-463) are their leaders. Scott is a poor man's Stovall, he has also caught 22 passes for 387 yards. QB Pat Brochet has sparkled at times, completing 50% of his passes, and already throwing for 1382 yards. He has also either thrown or ran for 15 TD's. Stovall, Roderick, DB Jared O'Shea (4 INT's), DE's Vince Lynam and John Vanak, and DL Pat Kelly lead a dominate defense. SJN's RB Chris Scott Peters (134-796, 12 TD's) is the Bucco's leading rusher. QB Ed Lego is tough, and can make plays. WR Mike Moody (16-329) is also dangerous as a returner. The strength of this team is on defense where, LB! Mark Meighan and Bryan Navin (4 INT's) anchor a solid unit. Les Durkee also has 3 picks. Two-way lineman Ed McDuffie will need to turn in a strong performance.
PICK: The Pirates are a tough team, but will need a ton of breaks to take this one. Carroll is too good on both sides of the ball. In the teams' last meeting a punt and INT return by Stovall broke open a close game. If Neumann can contain him to some degree, and force a turnover or two they can stay in the game. The Pirates believe they can win, and that is a good start, but Carroll has shown no signs of letting up on the overmatched CL Blue. Carroll cruises, 24-0.

MCDEVITT (8-2) v. WOOD (8-2) (Friday, 7, at NE)
   INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
These teams played into OT in their earlier meeting this season. The Vikings came away winners, 6-0, in a defensive struggle. These teams are either #2 or #3 in many statistical categories within the CL Blue. BM averages 25.5 ppg, while Wood is at 22.4 ppg. AW is #2 in total ypg with 248.6, BM is #3 at 211.9. Defensively, McDevitt only gives up 9.3 ppg (#2), and Wood 12.6 (#3). BM only passed for 13 yards in the teams first meeting. Wood is coming off a bye week, while BM beat West 35-0 last week. Wood ran for 100 yards and passed for 83 yards in the first meeting. McDevitt did run for 131 yards.
PERSONNEL: Wood is led by brassy QB John Spinosa who has thrown for 491 yards, and run for 366 yards on the years. He has also either thrown or run for 12 TD's. RB Bill Hartley (561 yds, 4 TD's) is the Vikings main threat running the ball. WR. Dave Lorditch (18-376, 6 TD's) is averaging over 20-yards a catch. DL Keary Packer is a serious force, and just may be one the five best defensive players in the area. Also, DL Anthony Mora will need to be contained for the Vikings. QB Bill Holden is very capable of making plays. He has combined throwing and running for 11 TD's, and has thrown for 638 yards on the year. RB Demetrius Oliver (611 yards, 7 TD's) has regained his form since a midseason injury. WR's Mark Finley and Robert Henderson have combined for 22 catches and 545 yards. DB Finley (7 INT's), DB P.J. Chipman (5 INT's), and Tariq "TBCB" Boston (2 INT's) lead a strong secondary unit. DL Brian O'Meara anchors the D-line, and LB's Brandon Edwards, John McKeever, and Andrew Kovach are nasty linebackers.
PICK: I expect another low scoring, defensive struggle in this one. A replay of the first tilt would not surprise me. These teams are heated rivals, and their fans will be out in full effect. Whichever teams forces that key turnover will put themselves in prime position to win. This time I think it might be the Lancers. Lancers outlast, 13-7 (OT).

JUDGE (8-3) v. BONNER (9-1) (Saturday, 7:30, at PW)
   INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Three weeks ago the Friars mauled the Crusaders in the second half and went on to win 38-14. MB is ranked second in scoring offense and total yards at 26.9 ppg and 305.9 ypg. They are the #1 ranked passing team in the CL Red at 128.9 ypg and the #3 ranked rushing team at 177 ypg. Defensively, Bonner is #2 versus the rush, allowing just 113.1 ypg. Judge is #2 against the pass, allowing just 75.5 ypg. FJ is #2 throwing the ball at 115.8 ypg. Bonner's defense has picked off 20 passes this year.
PERSONNEL: The RB combination of Jason Smith and Paul Kolhoff erupted against the Crusaders to the tone of 237 yards and 4 TD's on just 25 carries in the last meeting. The duo have combined for 1232 yards and 10 TD's on the year. QB Mike Stauffer has thrown for 880 yards and 11 TD's, and is capable of having big games. His favorite target is WR Kevin LeSage (38-721, 8 TD's), the Co-MVP is a playmaker and will need to be double-teamed throughout. Bonner is led by LB Dom Armideo, DB Chris Eccles (5 INT's), LeSage (4 INT's), DB Frank Nunan (3 INT's), and LB Joe Boland on defense. Judge is led by RB Justin O'Brien who amazingly has scored points 7 different ways this season. He is equally as dangerous running and catching the ball. He has rushed for 882 yards, and has made 21 catches for 207 yards on the season, scoring 17 TD's. With efficient QB Greg Hennigar hurt, QB Mike Eaton will make his 4th start of the season. Eaton is completing 51% of his passes, and ! has thrown for 293 yards. WR's Mike Haigh (45-570) and Derek Talley (19-232) are the leading receivers. The defense is led by DB Dan Graf (3 INT's) and hard-hitting LB Tom Lynch.
PICK: The Friars frolicked a few weeks ago in beating the Crusaders. I do expect a much closer game. Without Hennigar things are that much more difficult for Judge, but they still have enough to beat Bonner. Will Smith and Kollhoff be able duplicate the 237-yard performance that had last time? This should be a dandy of a game, and the LeSage versus O'Brien matchup is worth the price of admission. In a much closer affair, Bonner bests, 17-7.

O'HARA (8-3) v. SJ PREP (7-3) (Friday, 7, at NE)
   INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Prep manhandled the Lions in an earlier matchup, 35-14. They scored everytime they had the ball, except the last, when they ran out the clock. Included in that scoring, were two 16-play drives that took off huge amounts of time. Prep rushed for 378 yards, and only attempted one pass. The Prep are #1 in ppg (38.3), ypg (391.3), rushing ypg (276.7) offensively, and are #1 ppg allowed (10.3), ypg allowed (163.3), and rushing ypg allowed (59.4) in the CL Red. O'Hara did manage 182 yards of total offense in the first meeting. Statistically, the Lions are near the top of several categories. Including, #3 ppg (26.0), #3 total ypg (295.3), #2 rushing ypg (203) offensively. Defensively they are #2 in points allowed (13.0), #2 in total yards allowed (214.5), and #1 passing yards allowed (67.6).
PERSONNEL: Co-MVP RB/DB Kyle Ambrogi leads the Hawklets. Ambrogi has rushed for 1303 yards, and scored 18 TD's. In the first game he rushed for 197 yards on 29 carries, including an 80-yard TD jaunt to open the scoring. QB Vince Gallagher (72-for-130, 1251 yards, 13 TD's) is a talented passer, but it was his legs that did the damage in the teams' first meeting. Gallagher rushed for a season high 116 yards, and two scores. WR's Jim Lachman, the possession guy, and Pete Chromiak, the deep threat, have combined for 45 grabs and 827 yards, with 7 TD's. Defensively they are led by DT Mike Mailey, DB Danny Jones (also KR threat), LB Adam Hepp, LB Brian Tracz, and LB Dave McDermott. OL John Conners is as good as it gets up front. The Lions will need to keep their fingers crossed and hope that  soph RB Anthony Heygood is recovered from his concussion that he suffered two weeks ago against Bonner. All Heygood has done this season is score 20 TD's, and rush for 1447 yards. He was his team's lone shining star in the first meeting, as he rushed for 125 yards on 27 carries. QB Colin Smith is as precise as they come. Smith has completed nearly 64% of his passes, for 1109 yards and 13 TD's. His favorite targets are WR's Harry Dougherty and Tom Convery who have combined for 765 yards, on 59 receptions. They have scored 9 TD's between them, with Convery scoring three last week against LaSalle. FB Pat Gallagher is a blocking machine, but has managed 436 yards this year. LB's Andrew Wood and Matt Mascio lead the defense. OL Mike "Tuna" Bucella is a good one on the O-line. First team All-Catholic G Pat Sweeney will be sorely missed, out with a leg injury.
PICK: The Prep had been rollin', then came an off week. It will be interesting to see if they can pick up where they left off. Last season O'Hara was trounced in the regular season against the Prep, then they came back and beat the Hawklets rather easily in the finals. I'm not so sure that can happen again. The beating the Prep took last season is still fresh in their minds. Before the CL Red portion of the season started I said that the only way the Prep would lose was if they beat themselves. I expect them to be prepared, and they'll need to be against a sound O'Hara football squad. Prep parades, 34-10.

HUCK'S GEMS:
GEORGE WASHINGTON (7-1) at GERMANTOWN (7-0) (Friday, 2:30)
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Both of these squads are in the top #5 of numerous offensive and defensive statistics. The Eagles are the highest rated defense in the Pub in both total and rushing defense, giving up only 50.5 yards on the ground and 92 yards per game in total. The Bears are only giving up 92.9 yds per game in total defense, and hold the #2 ranking in that category. Offensively, the Eagles are #3 in total offense, while the Bears are # 2. GW's opponent's record this year was (29-29). GT's opponent's record was (16-34). GW defense has posted 4 shutouts. The teams have one common opponent, Franklin, with both winning. GW by a score of 19-0, and GT 36-12.
PERSONNEL: The Eagles are led by RB/LB Ryan Gore, for them to win he has to be involved on two-thirds of the offensive plays. Gore has scored 11 TD's, and is averaging 8 yards per carry. LB Maurice Bennett is the GW defensive leader, and opens holes from his fullback position. He is a bull, and an aggressive defensive player. WR/DB Kyle Bell might be the Eagles most athletic player, who is capable of making game breaking plays on both sides of the ball. QB Marcus Kennedy has thrown for 11 TD's, and has completed 55% of his passes, he has also thrown for 824 yards. Michael Van Allen and Bell have combined for 33 catches for 667 yards. Germantown is led by DB/RB Jeffrey "JT" King who has accumulated three straight 100-yard games. RB Aaron "Cheez" Calhoun is a nice compliment to him in the backfield. This combination has racked up 1135 yards and scored 14 TD's. QB Raymond Massey has completed 50% of his passes. WR Akil Stokes has only caught 6 passes, but is avg. 38 yards ! per catch, he has big play potential.
PICK: GW was my preseason pick, and they could very well win it all. To some degree Germantown has been a surprise. Both teams are well coached, and I expect a tight affair. Whether or not the Bears have been tested is a concern for me. GW has quality wins over Bartram and Frankford, and a 8-0 lost to NE, where their defense did not allow a point. Gore has to continue to get the ball, if for some reason he is shackled again his team will be in trouble. Eagles elevate, 16-6.

NEUMANN (5-5) v. CONWELL-EGAN (3-6) (Saturday, 7:30, at Norristown)
   INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
In CL Blue play the Eagles were the #3 ranked team rushing the ball at 183.4 yds per game. The Pirates were the #3 ranked team in stopping the run at 93.4 yds per game. The Pirates' defense has picked-off 14 passes this season. Last week, CE surprised SJN down in South Philly by the tone of, 17-0. This was their first shutout of the season. In that game Neumann was held to 114 yards of total offense. The Eagles also passed for a season high 88 yards.
PERSONNEL: The Eagles will rely on the defeasive play of LB Joe Lamina, LB Vince Salvatore, and DE Phil Brazil. On offense, RB Lamina and freshman RB Steve Slaton have combined for 15 touchdowns. Slaton, his team's lone speed threat, has rushed for 759 yards this season, and averaged 7.7 yds per carry. QB Derrick Savage had his best game of the season last week against SJN. For SJN, bruising RB Chris Scott-Peters (691 yds, 8 TD's) should get the brunt of the work. Whether or not QB Ed Lego will be able to play might be a game-time decision. It will help his team immensely if he can give it a go. Defensive leaders are a couple of good ones in play-making DB Bryan Navin and gritty LB Mark Meighan.
PICK: I'm having a tough time deciding on a pick here. Something tells me we won't see a repeat of last weekend. That doesn't mean that CE won't win the game. I think SJN took the improving Eagles a little lightly. I expect a hard-hitting game, with both defenses controlling throughout. Both teams have had trouble passing all season, so whoever can control field position should win. Pirates parade, 7-0.

LASALLE (3-5-1) v. O'Hara (7-3) (Saturday, 7:30, at Plymouth-Whitemarsh)
   INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Lions are posting 26.7 pts and 291.7 yards per game, both good for a # 3 ranking in CL Red play. On defense they are only giving up 216.7 yards per game, good for a #2 ranking. The Explorers have the #2 rated scoring defense at 13.4 points, # 3 rated defense in yards per game at 225.9. LS has scored 69 points in it's last two contest, both wins. O'Hara beat LaSalle on the road 20-6.
PERSONNEL: O'Hara is led by soph sensation RB Anthony Heygood who has rushed for 1447 yards and 20 TD's, both impressive numbers. However, his status for this weekend's game is uncertain, and my sources tell me he may be a a no go. If Heygood does not play, look for the Lions to rely on RB Bob McAndrews who had some impressive moments in mop-up duty this season. QB Colin Smith who completes passes at a 63.2% clip, may be asked to throw more often if Heygood can't go. Smith has thrown 10 TD's, and thrown for 925 yards this season. His favorite target is WR Harry Dougherty (31-455) who has a tendency to make acrobatic snags. LB Andrew Wood will anchor the O'Hara defense, as will DB Craig Haywood. The Explorers offense has been in a shambles much of the season. However, QB Joe Winning has taken over the helm and has put up 69 points in the last two weeks. RB Sean Miller ran for 153 yards against Ryan last week, and is a threat out of the backfield as well. If Winning were to struggle, look for QB Brian Donohoe (567 passing yds) to step in. LB's Ed Sabia and Dan Waters are as good as they come from the linebacker position anchoring a stingy defense.
PICK: In the teams' last meeting, Heygood erupted for 209 rushing yards. If he is unable to go that will be extremely hard to replace. LaSalle is a dangerous team right now, while O'Hara has had two straight setbacks to SJ Prep and neighborhood rival Bonner. Will they be able to put that behind them and move forward. I think they can win the game, even without their star back. Also, they are the defending champs and that has to count for something. Lions roar, 14-7.

RYAN (3-6) v. FATHER JUDGE (7-3) (Saturday, 7, Northeast)
   INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Ryan loves to throw, and are the # 3 ranked passing team at 113 yards to game. Judge can stop the pass with the league's # 2 ranked pass defense (72.6 yds). The Crusaders blanked the Red Raiders 14-0 in the teams' regular season meeting. The Crusaders only give up 15.0 pts per game.
PERSONNEL: With QB Greg Hennigar (1014 yards, 6 TD) the Crusaders are a complete football team, without him and there is a considerable drop. I hear that there is a chance he could play this weekend. Well, that would be good news for FJ, bad news for AR. Mulit-purpose back Justin O'Brien is the other constant for the Crusaders. The elusive back has scored 16 touchdowns this season, on four different ways. You never know when he is going to hurt you. If Hennigar is unable to play, QB Mark Eaton will fill in. Eaton has played well at times during Hennigar's absence. WR Mike Haigh is the team's leading receiver with 41 catches and 532 yards. Ryan is led by QB Joe DeLeo, who has thrown for 937 yards, and 7 TD's. His favorite targets are WR Kyle Gallagher (24-539, 5 TD's) and Chris Kozole (19-241). The Red Raiders have been using a runningback by committee system, but injured PJ Varanavage may be back this weekend. This could be important for them if they have a lead. Varanavage can chew up the clock with his running when healthy.
PICK: With a healthy Hennigar the Crusaders slid by Ryan only 14-0 earlier this season. If he plays, I see a similar kind of result. If he can't, then an upset wouldn't be out of the question between these longtime rivals. O'Brien is head and shoulders the most dynamic player on the field, this alone should provide relief for the Judge faithful. Crusaders contend, 21-7.

BEST OF THE REST:
   DOBBINS (6-1) at NORTHEAST (7-0) (Friday, 2:30)
   INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Each team relies heavily on their defenses, both squads have posted 4 shutouts this season. They rank #1 and #2 in points allowed, with NE giving up just 3.0, and Mustangs allowing 4.3 a game. The Vikings may carry a little more weight on offense. They lead the Public League in rushing at 223.3 yards per game, and are # 3 in points scored at 26.9. Northeast boast quality wins over Frankford and George Washington.
PERSONNEL: The dynamic duo of RB's Darien "Party" Hardy and Chris Poindexter have combined for 1184 yards and 18 TD's, while getting 7.3 yards per carry. The Vikings have been very effective with this tandem this year. QB James Franklin has not been asked to throw much this year. Eric Clark is a leader on defense with three interceptions. As a core, NE defense might be the most athletic and quickest in the league. They are extremely hard to move the ball on. For the Mustangs, QB Barren Grier has had some very good moments this year, but has been somewhat inconsistent. RB Khalif Boldin is Dobbins main offensive threat, and has posted three 100-yard games this year. FB/LB Lateef Ferguson is a force on both sides of the ball. He is his team's hardest hitter on defense, but will give out just has much punishment from his fullback position on lead blocks.
PICK: Both squads love to run, but both have had great success in stopping the run. These teams would have met in week 1 of the non-league portion of the schedule, but was canceled because of Sept. 11. The Vikings have a little more firepower on offense and that should carry them over the top. Northeast numbs, 19-0.

BOK (4-3) at MASTBAUM (6-1) (Friday, 2:30)
   INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Mastbaum offensive as been rollin' up the numbers as of late. They are putting 30.4 points on the board, good for second best in the PUB. They also are grinding out 203.7 yards on the ground per game. They lead the PUB in total offense as well. Defensively, the Mustangs are not shabby either, as they rank 5th overall in total defense allowing only 138.7 yards per game. Bok has a (0-3) record against playoff teams, but this may not work against them. These games may have prepared them. Mastbaum has not had that strong of a schedule, as their opponents have only a (18-34) record. No Bok receiver has over 100 yards in receptions.
PERSONNEL: The Mustangs have probable Public League MVP in RB/LB Chris DeShields. DeShields does damage on both sides of the ball. He has rushed for 1043 yards, with 17 offensive TD's. He has also scored two defensive touchdowns. He is a coach's dream, or an opposing coach's nightmare. Mastbaum QB Mark Hansberry has quietly put up some solid numbers. He has completed 55.7% of his passes, and when been asked to throw has done a quality job. WR Tony Dyches (19-293) is a quality receiver and return specialist. Bok has had an up and down season, and is coming off a disappointing loss to divisional rival Bartram in OT. QB Kareem Jeffreys has had a nice career, but has been inconsistent in his final season. RB's Kevin Cheely and Will McCall share the load in the backfield. LB Shawn Jeter is an aggressive defensive player, and the Wildcat leader.
PICK: DeShields is too good a player to not have his team advance to the semi's. Bok has some talent, but are young is some crucial areas. Panthers party,   25-12.

ML KING (6-2) at BARTRAM (7-1) (Friday, 2:30)
   INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Maroon Wave are ranked 5th in passing offense at 77.3 yards per game and their defense is stingy only giving up 8.3 pts per game. MLK can pound the ball, and are the 3rd ranked team in doing so at 194.6 yards per game. Defensively, they are tops in the league in pass defense at 24 ypg, and 4th overall at 120.4 ypg. Bartram beat King in the first game of the season 24-18, in OT. King has posted three shutouts on the season. King rushed for 230 yards in that game versus the Marronn Wave, but could not manage a single yard through the air. In fact, no King receiver has more than three recptions on the year.
PERSONNEL: The key this week willbe the health of Bartram QB Phil Evans. Evans has thrown for 532 yards and 9 TD's. Evans can't go, Hanif Long who has filled in the last two weeks will once again get the nod. WR/KR/DB Romar Drake is a quality player and can make plays all over the field. RB Chironn "Goober" Davis gutted out 112 yards on 27 tough carries against Bok last week. FB/LB Julius Caple gets the tough yards for the Maroon Wave. MLK is led by the running of RB Donald Jefferson who has 796 yards on the year. QB Dion Whittington does not throw much, but has had some success running the ball, and scored three TD in the teams' first meeting. He has scored 9 TD's on the year through on runs. RB/KR Michael Leslie is averging 7.5 yards per carry, and has returned two kickoffs for TD's. HE can be dangerous in the open field.
PICK: If King falls behind it could be in trouble, their passing game is non-existing. They have been a pleasent surprise this year, but I think Bartram has a lot to prove and wants that chance at one of the bigger schools. Both teams can stop the run, but Bartram with a healthy Evans has other options. Then again turnovers and field position will play a huge part in the outcome. Bartram battles, 20-8.

WEST CATHOLIC (3-7) v. BISHOP MCDEVITT (7-2) (Friday, 7, Northeast)
   INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
The Lancers are the #2 ranked team in both scoring defense (10.6) and scoring offense (24.1). McDevitt blanked the Burrs 26-0 last weekend. West did hold McDevitt to only 112 yards on 32 carries last week.
PERSONNEL: QB Bill Holden is the glue that holds the Lancers together. All this kid does is win. He has 603 yards passing on the season, and has run or thrown for 11 TD's. RB Demetrius "Meat" Oliver (543 yards) is a pounding, tackle-breaking back. WR Robert Henderson is hauling in 32 yards per reception, while Wr Mark Finley has 16 receptions on the season. DT Brian O'Meara is a force on defense, and is hard to contain. K Brian Dwyer has booted three FG's, including two last week against the Burrs. West is young, but does have a trio of burners. RB/DB Curtis Brinkley is capable of breaking one at anytime. He has rushed for 1311 yards, and has scored 12 TD's on the year. RB/DB Robert Ramsey (351 yards, 7 TD's) is also a threat, and is the team's leading tackler. Ramsey also has 4 INT's. WR/KR Jonathon Jackson (18-270) might be the fastest of the three.
PICK: The Burrs are probably too young to win a game like this. McDevitt plays smart, and has a very good defense that should offset West' speed. McDevitt is also tougher. The one reason that West could have a chance in this game is their speed. If Brinkley, or one of the other two can break one it could make things interesting. McDevitt won't overwhelm you offense, and that is another reason this one could stay close. The Lancers will cause turnovers, and the Burrs are a year away from making a serious run. McDevitt manhandles, 20-0.

FRANKFORD (5-1) at GEORGE WASHINGTON (6-1) (Friday, 2:30)
---Win this game and you put yourself in the mix to make a serious run at the
PL crown. Lose, and you go home saying, on any given day we might be the best
team in the PUB, but we failed to make the playoffs.  This game will probably
mirror the games each of the teams played against Northeast. I expect a low
scoring game, and whoever controls field position should prevail. Last week,
I mentioned that I thought GW RB Ryan Gore needed to touch the ball 18-to-22
times. What happened? He got it only 9 times. His team lost!!! Unless he
suffered an injury, there is no excuse for this. I am pleading with the GW
coaching staff, give him the ball more, and you shall be rewarded. The Eagle
combination of QB Marcus Kennedy and WR Kyle Bell has shined at times this
year, and will need to make a few plays to keep the Pioneer defense honest.
Frankford will rely heavily on RB Marcus Waddy who has great open field
speed. He will need to break one, because I don't see the Pioneers pounding
the ball with the diminutive back. QB Darrell Turner has averaged over 110
yards passing in the last three games. In the beginning of the year I made GW
my preseason pick. So picking them to lose here would go against my original
thoughts. However, I expect a very tight game, that could get pushed to OT.
Eagles eliminate, 13-7.

BONNER (8-1) at O'HARA (7-2) (Sunday, 1)
---One of the games of the year in Delaware County this weekend. On paper
these two teams look to be evenly matched. The winner of this game should
give themselves a first round playoff bye. The Friars rebounded nicely last
week with a pasting of Father Judge. The Lions fell hard to league
front-runner SJ Prep. The key here will be Bonner's run defense against Lion'
soph sensation Anthony Heygood. The impressive back leads the city in
rushing, and has an experienced offensive line paving the way. Bonner has
allowed back-to-back 100-yard runners in the past two weeks, and cannot
afford to let the bruising Heygood run wild. The Friars once again used the
clutch play of WR Kevin LeSage to set the tone last week, and then turned to
RB's Jason Smith and Paul Kolhoff to put the game away, as both backs ran for
over the century mark. Can Bonner have this success on the ground once again?
If so, they will be extremely tough to beat. I see a close game that will be
highly emotional, and what should be a tremendous crowd onhand. Bonner's K
Chris Schrader gives the Friars a fourth quarter lead, only to see O'Hara QB
Colin Smith orchestrate a winning TD drive. O'Hara ousts, 21-17.

BARTRAM (6-1) at BOK (4-2) (Thursday, 2:30)
---The winner will take home the PL Division D title, and a home and easier
playoff game. So to say that a lot is at stake for these to heated rivals
would be an understatement. The big question is, will Maroon Wave QB Philip
Evans be ready to go after suffering an ankle injury that kept him out of
last weeks win over Olney. My feeling is that there is no way this kid misses
this game. With him, the Maroon Wave has a legitimate shot at a victory.
Without him, things could be extremely difficult. Until someone takes it from
them, this division still goes through Bok. Wildcat QB Kareem Jeffreys
entered the season has one of the league's more polished quarterbacks. Due to
the events of his teams' games he has not been asked to throw much. That will
have to change for his team to win this week. In fact, both of these teams
will need to have some success throwing the ball. That is why the health of
Evans is so critical for Bartram. Look for a hard fought, physical game where
nothing will be left on the field. Bok battles, 12-8.

SJ PREP (6-3) at FATHER JUDGE (7-2) (Saturday, 7)
---"And the beat goes on, and the beat goes on." To steal a quote from that
60's dynamic duo Sonny and Cher seems to be appropriate here when it comes to
the Hawklets. The Prep pummeled both Bonner and O'Hara in the last two weeks,
and has left notice it is taking no prisoners. Three weeks ago, I would have
given the Crusaders a reasonable chance in this game. After what I witnessed
in person last week, I hate to say it to the Crusader faithful, but keep the
bus running. No shot!!! Especially without QB Greg Hennigar. RB Justin
O'Brien will do everything he can, but he will be hard pressed to stop this
machine. Coach Gil Brooks will not let his troops relax, so don't expect a
letdown. He wants this title in the worse way, and has the horses to get it.
Prep pounds, 35-7.

UNIVERSITY CITY (0-6) at SOUTHERN (0-6) (Friday, 2:30)
---What? How did this game make it into the Gem package? These teams have
been picked apart like a carcass by vultures on the African plains. Now it is
time for one of these teams to taste the fruits of victory. The numbers are
not pretty here, but the desire and love for the game are what counts. The
members of each of these squads know this might be their last chance for a W,
so they will leave it all out on the field. I don't know a ton about each
team except that, Southern can't run, but can throw a little. UC can't throw,
but might run some. I'll give the nod to the team that runs better. Jaguars
are jubilant, 18-14.

HUCK'S GEMS:
GEORGE WASHINGTON (6-0) at NORTHEAST (5-0) (Friday, 6)
---If the Vikings win here they will finally secure that playoff berth that
has eluded them the last few seasons. NE already owns a win against other
Division A heavyweight Frankford. These teams own both the number one and two
ranked scoring offenses and defenses in the league, while outscoring their
opponents by a combined 58.2 points per game. NE will use the solid tandem of
RB's Chris Poindexter and Darien "Party" Hardy to try and control the ball.
For GW, RB Ryan Gore is a stud averaging over 10 yards per carry. He'll need
at least 18-to-22 touches in this game for his team to win. Due partly to his
teams routing-type wins he has not carried more than 11 times in a game this
year. That will have to change Friday night. One difference that could play a
pivotal part in the game is that GW has had much more success via the air.
They lead the PUB in yards through the air, and have a legitimate threat in
WR Kyle Bell. In turn, NE has only attempted 32 passes all season. I don't
see them having a ton of success if they try to exclusively run the ball down
the Eagles throat. I expect a hard fought defensive game. I'll be very surprised
if the teams combines for more than thirty points. I see GW forcing a key
turnover late in the game, either leading to a winning score or preventing
one. Eagles edge 15-12.

O'HARA (7-1) at SJ PREP (5-3) (Friday, 7:30)
---I'll get to view this one in person Friday night, and what a dandy it
should be. Both squads have been rolling as of late. This is a rematch of
last year's CL Red championship in which the Lions somewhat surprisingly
easily handled the Hawklets. O'Hara has been riding the legs of soph RB
Anthony Heygood and an experienced offensive line. However, they'll have
their work cut out for them this week. The Hawklets are giving up just 1.6
per rush in league play. The Prep will like to build off their thrashing of
previously unbeaten Monsignor Bonner last week. The Hawklets left no doubt
who was in control, and will be looking to do more of the same. Sr. OL John
Connors, who is arguably the city's best lineman, may be a no-go because of an
ankle injury. If that is the case, yards may be a little harder to come by
for RB Kyle Ambrogi and QB Vince Gallagher. O'Hara is much more balanced
offensively than Bonner because of Heywood, so this should be a much closer
game. I still think the Hawklets have a lot to prove, and in front of a huge
crowd are at least 10 points better. Prep parades, 24-14.

BONNER (7-1) at JUDGE (7-1) (Saturday, 1)
--- Two questions will need to be answered in this one. Can Bonner rebound
from the shellacking they received from the Prep last weekend? Also, will
Judge be able to overcome the loss of efficient QB Greg Hennigar? I expect
the Friars to come out on a mission. They will be trying to prove that their
7-0 record to start the season was not a farce. However, I do expect them to
struggle to gain yards on the ground as they did last week. The passing
combination of QB Mike Stauffer to WR Kevin LeSage will once again be counted
on heavily. For the Crusaders they will follow the lead of multi-purpose
player Justin O'Brien. Hennigar, who has an injured collarbone, will be sorely
missed. It is quite difficult to replace a team's leader this late in the
season, especially against a quality defensive opponent like Bonner. I expect
a nip and tuck game throughout, but I envision the Friars making a late
defensive stand sending them back into the win column. Bonner battles, 13-10.

McDEVITT (6-1) at CARROLL (7-1) (Saturday, 7:30)
---Battle for first place in the CL Blue will take center stage Saturday
night. The Patriots have been ripping through league play like a hot knife
through butter. They have outscored their opponents 191-14 in league play,
and lead in every statistical category on both offense and defense. They will
continue to use the runningback by committee on offense to control the ball.
Also, they posses possibly the areas ultimate weapon in WR/DB/KR Maurice
Stovall, who is very difficult to contain for 48 minutes. It wouldn't
surprise me in the least bit if the Lancers hung tough for a while, and then
Stovall took over. McDevitt does own the division's #2 ranked offenses and
defenses so by no means should this be a cakewalk for the Pats. I expect a
semi close game early on, but Carroll will eventually pull away. Carroll
clamps, 24-6.

WOOD (5-2) at NEUMANN (5-3) (Sunday, 1)
---What should be a highly competitive game takes place down in the heart of
South Philly on Sunday afternoon. The winner of this game should lock up no
lower than a #3 seed come playoff time. This could be important if either of
these teams are looking to avoid a semifinal matchup against division bully
Carroll. Both teams are very good stopping the run, so turnovers should be
the difference in this one. Whichever team can take care of the ball, and
control field position should leave with the W. One difference could be at
the QB position, where the Eagles have emotional leader John Spinosa who will
undoubtedly fit right in South Philly. I expect a hard fought and intense
affair. Wood wins, 20-14.

HUCK'S GEMS:
ST. JOE'S PREP (4-3) at BONNER (7-0) (Saturday, 7)
---The premier matchup in the city this weekend. These two schools haven't
been this evenly matched since that brawl they had in the 700 level of a
Phillies home opener a few years back. This game has been talked about since
that start of the season. The Friars are led by a turnover forcing defense
and an opportunistic offense. QB Mike Stauffer has gotten a couple of games
under his belt since his early season medical woes, and will need to be on
top of his game in this one. I think Bonner will have to pass on first and
second downs, and not wait for third and long situations. Stauffer is not
that mobile, so if put in these situations it may be a long night for the
Friars. Expect Bonner to set up the run through their passing game. WR Kevin
LeSage is Bonner's biggest weapon and will have to be featured throughout.
Don't let the youth in the Hawklets secondary fool you, Soph DB's Danny Jones
and Solomon Patterson are legit. Prep's DL Mike Mailey is a big game player,
and will need a double team to be contained. On offense, look for the
Hawklets to use a balance attack with the running of Kyle Ambrogi and the
passing of Vince Gallagher. The three losses the Prep suffered early in the
season could help them in this one. I think Bonner would have had a better
chance if Prep came into this game also undefeated. However, the Hawklets
have a bad taste in their mouths from the early season setbacks, and will be
looking to make a statement. I expect a hard hitting contest, with neither
team taking any prisoners. The difference is that the Prep has more firepower
on offense, with a stud back. If the Friars can continue to cause critical
turnovers they will be in it. They have already escaped two potential losses
(Carroll and LaSalle) by playing this way. Something tells me that this will
be the Prep's night in front of a huge crowd. Prep prevails, 20-6.

ROMAN (2-5) at RYAN (1-5) (Saturday, 7)
---The winner here will have the inside track at that sixth spot in the CL
Red. Both squads have been getting pounded by the better teams in the league.
They have been outscored 273-63 thus far, OUCH!!! That shouldn't take away
from the spirit and will to win for either of these teams. A playoff spot is
on the line, and each team will want that extra game. Red Raider QB Joe DeLeo
has been the lone source of offense for his team, and will need to do more of
the same. Roman soph QB Andre Sloan-El is capable of making big plays. The
difference could be Roman's Mr. Do Everything Kevin Dolan who goes full
throttle all the time. The team that takes care of the ball will prevail. I
see a Dolan TD return being the difference. Roman remains alive, 25-21.

WEST PHILLY (3-2) at BARTRAM (4-1) (Thursday, 3)
---This a huge game for both teams in Division D of the Public League, but
more important for the Speedboys. WP's loss to Bok two weeks ago has put them
behind the 8-ball for a playoff berth. The Maroon Wave had played well so
far, and wants a Division D title in the worst way. Their defense has been
superb the last three weeks holding their opponents to a combined six points.
WP's QB Elijah Cosby-Jones will provide a stiff challenge this week, and is
very capable of making big plays. Bartram will have to run the ball
effectively, but with the injury to RB Chironn Davis that might not be so
easy. Look for QB Phil Evans to have a big game, and for the Maroon Wave to
stay perfect in division D. Bartram beams, 26-12.

JUDGE (6-1) at LA SALLE (1-4-1) (Sunday, 1)
---Don't let LaSalle's record fool you, they have three quality losses to the
Prep, Bonner, and O'Hara. To some degree they were in all three games, and
should make this one interesting. Judge with upcoming games to Bonner and
Prep on the schedule is in prime position to be upset. The key for the
Explorers will be to contain RB Justin O'Brien who has been scoring
touchdowns like the St. Louis Rams. LaSalle won't dazzle you on offense, but
can feed off a stingy defense at times. Playing at home should help LaSalle.
Judge is the better team, but the better team doesn't necessarily win all the
time. It is easy to always go with the favorite. I am smelling upset this
week. Explorers eke, 14-13.

HUCK'S GEMS:
CARROLL (5-1) at WOOD (4-1) (Friday, 7)
--- What might be the premier regular season matchup in the CL Blue, has taken
somewhat of an unfortunate hit. Wood's confident leader, QB John Spinosa, has
been suspended a game for infractions committed in last week's win over
Kennedy-Kenrick. He will be sorely missed. Whether or not the Vikings can
replace him is up for debate. One thing that is not up for debate is
Carroll's Maurice Stovall. The high D-1 prospect has broken games open the
last two weeks, and will look to continue his assault on CL foes. Playing
with Spinosa the Vikings would be underdogs. Playing without him is just too
much to ask. Carroll cruises 24-7.

GERMANTOWN (3-0) at DOBBINS (3-0) (Saturday, 2:30)
---The Bears and the Mustangs take center stage as the key matchup in the Pub
this weekend. Both teams post undefeated records, and both have a Division B
crown in their sights. G-Town's backfield duo of Jeffrey "J.T." King and Aaron
"Cheez" Calhoun averages nearly eight yards per carry between them, and have
combined for nine touchdowns in three games. The Mustangs are led by RB
Khalif Boldin and QB Barren Grier, who have been as effective as any tandem
in the Pub thus far. Dobbins owns quality wins over Central and Mastbaum,
while G-Town's opposition's record is a meek (1-9). However, I look for a highly
spirited and competitive game. Dobbins delights 19-13 (OT)

JUDGE (5-1) at N. CATHOLIC (2-4) (at Lincoln, Saturday, 3)
--- These neighborhood rivals are at again, and both will look to be taking
home the Tucker Trophy. Unfortunately, the talent levels between the two
teams are a bit skewed. The Crusaders continue their march for a chance at a
CL Red crown. They have won in many fashions, using both the running and the
passing games. Eleven different Crusaders have caught passes from highly
efficient QB Greg Hennigar. Now that RB Justin O'Brien looks to have recovered
from a wrist injury, they are that more explosive. The Falcons will scratch
and claw all afternoon, but they are young and too inexperienced to stay in
it for long. Crusaders control, 34-6.

NEUMANN (4-2) at McDEVITT (4-1) (Saturday,7)
--- Interesting matchup in the CL Blue this weekend. I'll be eager to see if
the Buccos are ready to make that next step into the upper echelon of the
Blue Division. The Lancers don't throw too many surprises at you, and
rebounded nicely last week after suffering their lone loss to Wood. Neumann
may have uncovered a gem in RB Chris Scott-Peters, who rushed for 215 yards
last week against West. McDevitt will rely on even-keel QB Bill Holden who has
been steady all season. The Lancers have always relied on a strong defense,
and this season is no different. They already have 9 picks this season.
Look for McDevitt to crowd the line of scrimmage to take away Neumann's
ground game. If the Pirates can get sound games from the QB tandem of Ed
Lego and Pat McLaughlin, they have a serious chance. Pirates parade, 14-13.

PENN CHARTER (1-3) at MALVERN (4-0) (Saturday, 2:30)
---This game will set the tone on how much better are they than the rest of
their Inter-Ac opponents. The Friars are the consensus TedSilary.com # 1
team, and I don't see this changing anytime soon. Only so much can be said
about being a marked team or playing against a rival. The fact remains that
when you are that much more talented, like Malvern is, compared to their
opponents, then the results will continue to be ugly for opposing teams. The
Friars are averaging 32.0 ppg on offense, and are only giving up 7.0 ppg. PC
has a promising QB in Jr. Matt Ryan and have averaged over 30 pts a game in
its last two outings. However, if they can muster two scores against Malvern
it would be a successful afternoon. Malvern manhandles, 35-7.

HUCK'S GEMS:
BOK (1-1) at WEST PHILLY (2-1) (Friday, 3)
--- Even though we're still early in the season, it's been a long time since
the Speedboys have found themselves in a big-game environment. WP is much
improved this year, but a Division D title still goes through Bok. The
Wildcats are coming off a disappointing loss to Northeast where they were
handled easily. The Speedboys have closed the gap considerably, but my feeling is they
still fall short. Bok battles, 20-16.

CENTRAL (1-1) at DOBBINS (2-0) (Friday, 3)
--- I expect an entertaining affair in this one. The Mustangs are coming off
an OT win over a good Mastbaum team. Conversely, the Lancers were torched by
King in a game they surely expected to win. Both teams posses athletic
quarterbacks who should excite throughout. I sense a nice rebounding effort
from Central, but Dobbins is on a nice roll at the moment. Mustangs
make-believers, 28-22.

LA SALLE (1-2-1) at BONNER (5-0) (Saturday, 7)
--- The Friars are on a roll right now, and sr. QB Mike Stauffer is back in
the lineup. Sr. WR/DB Kevin LeSage has been awesome on both sides of the
ball.  The Explorers are a defense-oriented team, and will fight you to the
last whistle. I question both teams' offensive prowess, so points may be hard
to come by. One constant the Friars have proven all season is the fact that
their defense always forces a key turnover. Either setting up a score or
preventing one. Look for more of the same. Friars fly, 14-3.

NEUMANN (3-2) at WEST (1-4) (Saturday, 2)
--- Not the best game on the circuit, but intriguing nonetheless. The Buccos
are coached by Ed "Bubby" DiCamillo, who coached the Burrs 1984-1989.
Something tells me he takes special pleasure in beating his old squad.
Neumann is built around a strong defense, and an opportunistic offense. The
Burrs are young, but do have some speed. Soph. RB Curtis Brinkley can break
one at any time. Neumann numbs, 19-7.

NORTHEAST (2-0) at FRANKFORD (2-0) (Saturday, 11)
--- Certainly the premier game in the Pub this weekend, if not the entire
city. NE is still smarting from not making the playoffs last year. In my
opinion, on any given afternoon the Vikings were just as talented as GW and Frankford
last season. Unfortunately, with three quality teams in Division A only two
will compete in the playoffs. The team that losses this tilt will have its
back against the wall immediately. Right now I think the Vikings might be
the hungrier team. Vikings victorious, 19-14.

I-A TEAMS: 2-3

HUCK'S GEMS:
LA SALLE (1-1-1) at ST. JOE'S PREP (1-3) (Friday,7:30)
--- The Hawklets finally hit the win column last week, and will look to
improve upon that against their fierce rivals. Posting 47 points against a
decent Ryan team was the statement they were looking for. The Explorers
struggled somewhat last week, but managed to get the W anyway. They will need
yet another stellar defensive effort to pull off the upset this weekend.
Something tells me that Gallagher, Ambrogi, and co. will pull away late. Prep
prevails, 28-7.

BOK (1-0) at NORTHEAST (1-0) (Friday,3)
---The premier matchup in the Pub this weekend. Both teams had cakewalks a
week ago, but this week should give each team an idea of where it stands.
The Vikings are rapidly moving closer to GW as one of the Pub favorites. On
the other hand, the Wildcats are not to be taken lightly. Coach DeFelice
always prepares his team well, and it is led by seasoned QB Kareem
Jeffreys. NE will be led by the backfield tandem of Pub player of
the year candidate Darien "Party" Hardy and Chris Poindexter, who combined for 190
yards last week on just 11 carries. Vikings victor, 26-18.

RYAN (1-2) at FATHER JUDGE (3-1) (Saturday,7)
--- The Crusaders have shown that they should be taken seriously in their
quest for a CL Red crown. This week they will have to fend off longtime
nemesis Ryan. The Red Raiders will be out to improve upon the shellacking
they took last week against the Prep. Meanwhile, Judge will have to be on
guard against a letdown. Under the leadership of QB Greg Hennigar, Judge
should continue to roll. Crusaders conquer, 27-13.

CARROLL (3-1) at NEUMANN (3-1) (Saturday,1)
---The trip to South Philadelphia can be hazardous one. I'm sure that the
Patriots are well aware of that, especially with the bad taste of being
outscored 83-6 in two meetings last year looming in the back of the Pirates'
heads. However, a few things have changed since last year. One, this Carroll
squad is not as dominant as last year's. Also, Neumann has shown it can
unleash an occasional big play this season. Look for the defenses of both
squads to play a pivotal role in this one. A late score secures the victory for
the Patriots. Carroll controls, 21-7.

McDEVITT (3-0) at WOOD (2-1) (Saturday,1)
---This should be a highly competitive game. Last season, these two teams
waged war against one another with two dandies. The Lancers took
both, including a regular season 16-13 overtime affair, and then a spirited
28-21 playoff victory. This game should be no different. Expect a defensive
tone, with scores being set up primary by the defenses. I see Wood's brassy QB
John Spinosa staging a late-game rally. Wood wins, 14-13.

BEST OF THE REST:
DOBBINS (1-0) at MASTBAUM (1-0) (Friday,3)                          Mastbaum, 26-13.
PENN CHARTER(0-2) at INTERBORO (Friday, 7:30)                  Interboro, 23-7.
MALVERN (3-0) at WC EAST (1-2) (Friday,7:15)                         Malvern, 31-7.
BARTRAM 1-1) at LINCOLN (1-0) (Friday,7,at NE )                   Bartram, 20-12.

ROMAN (2-2) at O'HARA (3-1) (Sunday,1)                                  O'Hara, 28-13.

OTHERS:

UNIV. CITY (0-1) at FRANKFORD (1-0) (Friday,3)                     Frankford, 42-0.
GERMANTOWN (1-0) at OVERBROOK (0-1) (Friday,3)            Germantown, 26-6.
WEST PHILA. (0-2) at OLNEY (0-1) (Friday,3)                             West Philly, 26-12.
SOUTHERN (0-1) at WASHINGTON (1-0) (Friday,3)                   Washington, 48-0.
BONNER (4-0) at NORTH (2-2) (Saturday,11)                               Bonner, 27-0.
CONWELL-EGAN (0-3) at DOUGHERTY (0-4), (Saturday,1)       Dougherty, 36-18.
KENNEDY-KEN. (1-3) at WEST (0-4) (Saturday,2)                      West, 32-16.
GRATZ (0-1) at FRANKLIN (0-2) (Saturday, 1)                              Franklin, 34-12.
HAVERFORD SCH. (1-2) at BOYS LATIN (0-0) (Saturday,1)       Havf. Sch., 14-7.
HUN SCH. (NJ) (0-0) at GERM. ACAD. (0-2) (Saturday,2)            GA, 23-16.
HILL SCHOOL (1-0) at EPISCOPAL (1-1), (Saturday, 2:30)          Episcopal, 24-7.

SEPT. 20
HUCK'S GEMS:
GEORGE WASHINGTON (1-0) at BARTRAM (1-0) (Friday, 3)
---The Eagles are just about everyone's Public League preseason favorite.
While the Maroon Wave have high aspirations for a playoff berth. GW with the
likes of Kyle Bell, Ryan Gore, and Maurice Bennett will pose many problems
for the opposition on both sides of the ball. Bartram QB Phil Evans is
highly athletic and could cause some havoc before this one is over. Eagles
soar, 26-8.

DOWINGTOWN (2-1) AT MALVERN (2-0) (Saturday, 1)
---PIAA power Dowingtown could cause some serious problems for the
tedsilary.com consensus #1 team. A contrast is styles is putting it lightly.
The Whippets are averaging a lusty 35.0 PPG. While the Friars are equally as
stingy on D. This could be Malvern's last hurdle to a perfect season. Playing
at home should help immensely. Malvern marvels, 21-20.

O'HARA (3-0) AT JUDGE (2-1) (Friday, 7)
---This game features to capable QBs in Judge's Greg Hennigar and O'Hara's
Colin Smith. An aerial display should be expected. Judge has a size
advantage, but Lions will likely counter that with speedy soph sensation RB
Anthony Heygood, the city's current rushing leader. A key to the Crusaders
success may be the health of versatile RB Justin O'Brien. The Lions rule, 26-21

ROMAN (2-1) AT BONNER (3-0) (Saturday, 7)
---The Friars just may very well possess the city's stingiest defense.
Led by Dom Armideo and Kevin LeSage they have been very difficult to score
on. Though the Roman soph combination of QB Andre Sloan-El and Rec. Charron
Fisher have promising futures. My feeling here is that inexperience will come
to the forefront. Bonner bullies, 17-0.

RYAN (1-1) AT SJ PREP (0-3) (Saturday, 7:30)
---The Hawklets are the best (0-3) team in the country; that is an
understatement. SJP has all the ingredients to make a run at a CL Red crown.
The Red Raiders will scratch and claw you to the bone on defense.
Unfortunately, I don't think they have enough firepower to keep the Hawklets
out of the win column. Prep pounds, 27-0.

FRANKLIN (0-1) AT CENTRAL (0-0) (Friday, 3)
---This is a rematch of last years Pub quarterfinal tilt, in which the
Electrons handed the Lancers a 18-8 defeat. Both squads have lost some
offensive personnel from last year. However, enough talent remains for this
to be an entertaining early season contest. Keep an eye on Franklin's Boe
"Big Boe" Davis (6-4,290). Davis has the agility, size, strength, and
quickness to be one of the better lineman in the area. Central contends, 18-14.

BEST OF THE REST:
OLNEY (0-0) AT BOK (0-0) (Thursday,3)                          Bok, 22-8.
