CATHOLIC AAAA
Roman Catholic 29, Judge 14
The game
between Father Judge and Roman Catholic was sure to be a battle for a
playoff spot in AAAA division. On a cold, rainy night with the temperature
in the 30’s both teams came out with one goal -- to get their second victory
for their league records. After the coin toss the Crusaders received the
ball and punted after going against the Cahillites' tough defense. With
Roman’s first drive they got to a 4th & 1, but were stopped short
turning the ball over back to Judge. The 1st quarter ended with
no score by any team, they headed into the 2nd quarter playing
very good defense against each other. Early in the 2nd
quarter, Roman drove down the field only to get a 30-yd. FG by jr. K/P Kyle
Haber. After taking a 3-0 lead the Cahillites drove down the
field again with some big gains by jr. FB/LB Christian Seagrave, which
led to a 1-yd. TD run by sr. QB/LB Kevin Regan. This took us into
halftime with Roman leading, 10-0. There was a good pep talk in the locker room
by Crusader head coach Tom Coyle, who led them to realize that this game
wasn’t over till the clock reached 0:00 in the 4th quarter. At
the start of the 2nd half, Roman came out strong until what was a
big run by Kevin Regan turned out to be a bone crunching moment, literally.
He came out of the game thinking it was only a minor injury preparing to go
back in suddenly found himself in more pain and then it was discovered that
something was wrong with his collarbone. It was broken. So backup jr. QB Kyle
Gibbons had to take over. Suddenly things looked to be starting to
turn towards the Crusaders' favor until Kevin’s brother, jr. RB/DB Dennis Regan,
made some plays. Going into the 4th quarter Roman led 17-0; things began
to look dim for the Crusaders until jr. QB Tony Smith connected with
jr. WR Matt Gies for a 4 yd-TD. Sr. K Owen Radtke missed
the extra point. Score: Roman 17, Judge 6. As the Crusaders lined up for the
kickoff Radtke managed to get a good bounce for an onside kick that was
recovered by jr. WR. John Donohoe. The Crusaders were down but not
out. On a critical pass play Smith threw an interception to sr. DB Michael
Gramlich, who nearly ran it back for a TD but was stopped short. Not
long after Gibbons flipped the ball to jr. WR/DB Kawaun Chavis for a
19 yd TD. The 2-Pt Conversion failed. Then Christian Seagrave busted a 50-yd rushing TD. The last scoring play of the game
was by the little speed demon, sr. RB Curt Wortham. Smith then
added a rushing conversion. When the whistles blew to signal end of
the game the scoreboard read this: Roman 29, Judge 14. Roman had 339 yds.,
of
which 109 came from Seagrave. Overall this was a cold, hard-fought game but
Roman came out with its 2nd victory in the Catholic League.
Next Saturday Judge plays Bonner; my prediction is 28-7 Judge comes out
victorious. Roman goes on to play Ryan, and I predict 45-3 in favor of
Roman.
