Tom "Hockey Puck/Nutman" McKenna has worked as a
statman with Ted since 1977. He swore in mid-2003 that he could pick games better than
Huck, so the challenge was on! (And he finally backed up his boasting in
'05!) Puck is a legend and known by sports figures throughout the city and elsewhere. Everyone considers him a friend. The pic at the right was taken in 2001. Here's a link to explain it. |

WEEK 14
Puck's comment: "Weally, I feel like the season over once Thanksgivin'
games played. But here we go . . . Liberty real good. I hate to say this, but
Frankford probably get crunch. I gotta take them, 34-14. Now, for the other
game. Here what I'm gonna do, Huck. My big goal is to whip your butt by 10
games for the season. I know you probably copy all my picks from last week
-- just admit it, boy -- so I'm only pickin' the score for West-Wood. I'm sayin'
17-14. You make your pick, then I take the opposite team. Ha, ha, ha. Pretty
smart, right? No conflict that way. Oh, wait. That IS a conflict. But that's
what
I want. So, go ahead, Huck. Make your pick in the "B" Division. That what
"Blue" stand for. They use "Red" for the other division because that start with
"R" -- it's the "Real" Division. Yo, Ted. Use those in the standings. The "Real"
Division and the "B" Division."
WEEK 13
(Thanksgiving Stuff Plus One)
Puck's comment: "Still got a nine-game lead over Huck. He still the
toughest guy ever to beat. I just got lucky. Luck, that the magic word.
(Two year in a row.) Last week we was both 5-1. Neumann almost
gave me the upset. The 1-yard line kill 'em. Next time jump over that
wall, please . . . The more you see Lorditch, he such a great player."
THE PICKS
Chester 24, Gratz 16
Malvern 37, Bonner 16 "Bonner should play Interboro and Malvern
should play SJ Prep. Better matchups."
N. Catholic 21, Frankford 17 "Game of the year for the Falcons and
Pioneers. They have great shot at goin' to state final. Maybe I can
make 'em overconfident again. Ha, ha, ha. Yo, I coach basketball
at Norf. Who you 'spect me to pick?? I do like Frankford, though.
That 'Cap' a cool guy. He funny."
Ryan 24, Washington 20 "This good rivalry game, too. Don't ever
get rid of it. McFillin vs. McFillin in this one with Frank helping
to coach Ryan and his son, Will, kickin' for Washington. Oh, yeah.
His other son, Colin, the waterboy, too. Thanksgiving dinner could
be rough in that house, right?"
Judge 35, Lincoln 10 "Judge need to come away with big win."
Neumann-Goretti 42, Southern 6 "Better walk to this game. Just
parkin' your car in South Philly get you a ticket. That place cwazy."
Roman 38, Roxborough 7 "Best Roxborough team since days
when Curtis Brinkley was there. Only pwoblem, Roman mad as hell
from last week getting crunch by La Salle. Look for Roman to score
a lot. Bill Wettstein gonna get tired runnin' up and down
sideline."
Univ. City 23, Mastbaum 15
Olney 35, Fels 6 "Next year, please."
Germantown 24, King 14
Dobbins 19, Franklin 14 "I love this North Philly battle. Defense
gonna win it."
Northeast 19, Central 7 "Defense win this game, too."
Overbrook 23, West Phila. 14
Imhotep 28, Freire 12
Conwell-Egan 38, Truman 7 "Truman basketball school only."
W. Catholic 28, Penn Wood 12
SJ Prep 28, La Salle 21 "You can't go against Whitney. Too good."
WEEK 12
Puck's
comment: "Please, Huck. Three weeks in a row. Give me some
competition. I'm up nine. I do feel bad, though. You are still the champ
even though you lost two years in a row. Really, it not over yet. Your
comeback might happen."
THE PICKS
CL Red
SJ Prep 31, North 24 (OT)
"Norf will hang with Pwep
on defense. Let's hope their speedboys
can run with them. Yo, Norf should borrow that nickname from West
Philly. The Speedboys. Daryl and T.O. can RUN. Norf punter need to
do good job. Field position gonna be important."
La Salle 34, Roman 33
"Look for the game of
your life after last week's Thrilla in Manila.
I know it was at Germantown. Don't sound as good, though. Brett
Gordon show a lot of guts goin' for two against O'Hara. How can you
go against Brett? Roman might not be that sharp after a week off."
CL Blue
West Catholic 31, Conwell-Egan 17
"This is West year for a
championship. When Huck go down, West
go up. Too much speed and a little revenge in the making."
Neumann-Goretti 22, Wood 20
"Hottest team in the
Blue. Mark Hatty too dangerous for me to go
against. The defense get better every day. Hey, they more scary than
the basketball team. That's a good remark, right? Ha, ha, ha, ha. Wait
'til (basketball assistant) John Mosco see that on the webline. He gonna
laugh like cwazy."
Public League
Frankford 24, Washington 14
"Frankford have too many
weapons. They can win the state crown.
Teams from other districts just OK. I need Frankford to win. Take
off pressure for North-Frankford game."
Class AAA State Playoff
Garnet Valley 34, Bok 20
"GV biggest scoring
machine around. But they also give up a lot of
points. Their QB very good. Makes a lot of good decisions."
WEEK 11
Puck's
comment: "I'm still goin' for the kill. Now I want to win
by 10 games. No playin' defense. All offense. If you had pick West
these last two weeks, you be two games closer. Talkin' trash two
weeks ago. Where'd that get you? Losing. I'm not even talkin'
trash. I just want to win."

Must go forward, please. Think kids know about Jim Marshall? If
not, they can
look it up on the webline. Make 'em smarter.")
WEEK 10
Puck's
comment: "Huck, I'm givin' you three steals. Take 'em and run.
I feel like I'm a fraud, like Huck said 2 weeks ago. I'm slippin' my lead
away slow but sure. I feel like Huck got all the advantage of winnin' the
contest this season."
THE PICKS

Frankford 49, Olney 6 "Sorry, Public League. Why you even

WEEK NINE
Puck's comment:
"Huck, please start givin'
me competition. It
gettin' borin'. Like I'm Prep and you're everybody else. People gonna
start callin' me 'Gil Brooks.' How can you go against your boy Fluck,
one of the best coaches in the game? You got what you deserve. Just
to make interestin', I gave you a couple freebie this week. You smart
enough to figure 'em out?"

WEEK EIGHT
Puck's comment: "Sorry, last week not over. I can still
tie you if
G-town and Gratz play again sometime and G-town wins. Huck must
have been the ref for that game. He knew G-town was ready to win it.
And, yo, Huck, I don't want to hear I lost on points. Nobody care about
that crap. I'm still owning a 2-game lead. Not too many close ones this week.
Upsets possible, but not likely."

open spots in the

WEEK SEVEN
Puck's comment: "No braggin' from me,
Huck. I'm takin' my win with
class. Ain't gonna get on you at all. I was lucky with some of them games.
Overtime with Malvern. Two goal-line stand with Episcopal. This could
be YOUR week. Yeah, I know I up three games overall, but that lead could

WEEK SIX
Puck's comment:

WEEK FIVE
"Puck's comment:
"I'm gettin' kill with Pub teams. West,
Overbrook and
Germantown let me down. I don't know how G-town lose to Bartram by
about 40. Bartram not Neshaminy, Coatesville or DeMatha. I have to
wonder did G-town quit the season? Please come back with a lot of heart.
. . . The whole Pub crazy this year. Wild, too. And we need more games
on Thursday. Too many on Fridays! How we gonna get enough guys to
cover all these games? . . . Oh, about Huck. It gonna be difficult to catch
him. Think he got my number this year. Most of this week pick look obvious.
Maybe not too many differences. After he give you his picks, I might quick
change some at the end. Ha, ha, ha. That smart, right? . . . (On Thursday

WEEK FOUR
"Puck's comment: "I was lucky, lucky, lucky; make that five
'luckys.' Roman
save me. Phew. No way it looked like they was gonna win. Then they pull it out
in
OT. If I fall three games behind Huck, that tough . . . Know what? Even though I
pick Wood, I do like Carroll for the upset. But only a nitwit can pick against
Wood
and I ain't no nitwit."
(Note from Ted: At this point, I asked Puck what makes him think
he's not a
nitwit. His response: "Uh, I don't know." Ha, ha, ha.)
Back to Puck . . . "It's good to see Germantown playing somebody
they can have
a chance to score against, and beat. Them first three weeks was brutal. They

Puck's comment: "I'm not even tryin' to win again this year. This just for
fun. Huck probably gonna win. If it get close down the end, I'll try hard. But
with all these goofy non-league games, I could be 20 games out after the first
three weeks. I hear that hurricane comin' up here. Might be good. Wipe out
all these games with teams nobody know about, right? I'm just goin' on
hunches, mostly . . . Huck gonna have a fun year. I hear West tremendous.
