Tom "Hockey Puck/Nutman" McKenna has worked as a
statman with Ted since 1977. He swore in mid-2003 that he could pick games better than
Huck, so the challenge was on! (He finally backed up his boasting in
'05 AND '06! -- Yikes!) Puck is a legend and known by sports figures throughout the city and elsewhere. Everyone considers him a friend. The pic at the right was taken in 2001. Explanation. Return to TedSilary.com Home Page |

WEEK 14
Puck's comment: "I know I got
Huck beat. It's a gweat feelin',
but you know what? He still the best game-picker. Public League
teams and Egan kill him. He kill me in actual scores. Phew, I'm
hahhhhhhible wit dat."
OK, HERE WE GO FOR (PWOBLY) FINAL TIME DIS YEAR
SJ Prep 35,
Roman 21: "You have to be cwazy, nuts
or on some
kind of dwug to against Pwep. I wouldn't mind if Roman wins,
though. That'd make the Widley Gween Waiders No. 1 in Top
15. I like them. They cool. Pwep wouldn't wanna face Widley
defense. They hit like Mack twuck."
Wood 21, West 20 (OT):
"Sorry, West. I have to have at least
one game different from Huck. I wanna beat him one last time.
I know West too good -- QB, RBs, defense . . . I will take chance
wit da Vikings. Just gotta make sure my boy Mike Cattolico -- I know
his dad from reffing -- throw ball to guys in same jersey."
Parkland 49, Washington 7:
"Frankford went to Crum Stadium two
years ago and got smoke. This place got a cool atmosphere. You can
sit way up high. Plus, there a place right down street with gweat ice
cweam sundaes. Know what? They should make a late change and
send Pwep to play Parkland. Let Roman play Washington. Pwep
woulda had great chance in state tournament this year."
WEEK 13
Puck's comment: "Three-game
lead for me. But anythin' can
happen and usually do. I gotta be careful. Ten tough games to pick."
FOUR GOODIES
Norf Catlic
21, Frankford 17: "This like Frankford
championship
game. They definitely comin' out to play. Norf gotta keep composure.
Very difficult game for Falcons. Pancakes at 7 a.m. on Turkey Day?
Who bright move was dat? Gotta keep belly empty for later."
SJ Prep 21, Malvern 14:
"Clinic No. 2. Last week DeFelice vs. Cohen
and now Brooks vs. Gamp. Just go to dis one to learn about the game.
Huck beat me out again for this coverin' this tilt because of the damn
webline. Ted say, "Huck gets it because people wanna read about it on
site." Just my luck. Nah, I understand. This too 'portant not to send Huck."
Dobbins 15, Franklin 14:
"Toughest game to call. Please, Ted, don't
send me there. I don't need my pocket bein' pick. I ain't got no cwedit
cards anyway. Just a lotta girl phone numbahs. Ha, ha, ha. Think people
believe that one?"
Truman 14, Conwell-Egan 10:
"Good chance for Mike Tos to get a win.
Could be his last game wit Egan. He should move to another school where
they treat him with respect and dignity. He love Egan like nobody else."

WEEK 12
Puck's comment: "Lotta good
game dis week. Time for me to make headway
on Huck. Hope we weady. I'm comin' at him. Gotta set myself up for
Thanksgiving week, when I can smack him 'round again. Ha, ha."
Roman 24, Judge 21:
"I like to take Judge, but Roman too explosed." (Ted's
note: That's what he said. "Explosed.") "They can score from anywhere. They
still better at each position. If cold weather, put they put eight man in box on
McHale. I know Roman wanna get back at Pwep for that manhandle defeat
on TV. Another reason for me takin' Roman: Huck pwobly won't."
Wood 21, Carroll 17:
"Will definitely be close. Stake my wep on that. Carroll
playin' better now than last game against Wood. Carroll can score. I'm just
worry
about they defense. Having Eckel back make them better. He Mr. Clutch."
West 35, McDevitt 7:
Pleeeeeeease. West too good for McDevitt. Four TDs
will be tough to get for Jason and Schley. West like Roman. Score from
anywhere."
SJ Pwep 31, O'Hara 14:
"Until Pwep lose, can't go against them. With Savage
or without, don't make a diffwence. Might as well put Big Willie at QB."
Washington 17, Bok 10:
"Everybody wanna see Bok win. Only people that
don't is connected to Washington. Where for $10 can you see a coachin' clinic?
Will be intrestin' to watch Cohen and Tommy D match idea. Even pwactice
would be fun to watch. Only problem with dis whole thing: Bok coulda beat
Pottsgrove."
Pottsgrove 26, Franklin 13:
"Long wide for Franklin. Please, guys, this is a
free game for you. Nothing to lose. You got a fweebie playoff visit. Take
'vantage
of it, OK? I wootin' for you."
Springfield Montco 21, Pwep Chahtah 0
WEEK 11
Puck's comment: "You must have
luck of Irish, Huck. 72-yard
drive for Overbrook to win game?! That luck, folks! My lead
down to one game. I have to take the right team in two games
that weally scare me -- North/Roman and La Salle/O'Hara. John
Harrison scare me a lot and so do Terrell Oglesby. I figure Huck
will go with same two I pick. He gonna play defense. Huck beat
me three of last four week. My luck must change."

tough to go 'gainst."
Malvern 24, Chestnut Hill 23 "CHA new kid on block. Malvern always
had bye this last
week. Probably wish they had bye this week, too. Might be tough end
of season for Friars.
First these guys then the REAL Pwep at Thanksgiving."
Penn Charter 14, Gtn. Academy 13 "This don't look like great game
this year, but this rivalry
still the grand-daddy. Same for Episcopal-Haverford, when you come
down to it."
Episcopal 20, Haverford School 7
Roman 10, N. Catholic 7
McDevitt 26, Kennedy-Kenrick 7
WEEK 10
Puck's comment:
"Two-game lead not much. Tough picks. I
can't have West-Wood bein' a conflict. Huck is hot. I feel him
comin' closer every week in standing. Well, not this past week
'cause I crunch his ass, 1-0. Ha, ha. This a tough week. Need
lotta difference games. Make it more interestin'."

Judge 28, N. Catholic 10 "I like red. But Norf just get beat in
every position
on field. Can you honestly tell me what position they win when match up
wit Judge? MAYYYY-be running back. But weally, Judge got the Hesiman
winner wit Andrew McHale. Move over, Balial. That dude from West also
a possibility, but he run against Blue defenses. Not same. QB: No
contest.
Dennis Logue must play better. OL: Judge lead dere. WR: Norf guys too
young. DL: Judge tough to move outta dere. LB: Close because of Chris
James, but must favor Judge. DB: Judge weally gettin' good dere, too.
Ryan
Fenningham best-kept secret."

Malvern 21, Penn Charter 17
Gtn. Academy 17, Haverford School 10
Ryan 26, Bonner 23 "Give Bonner a lot of cwedit. Tough situation.
One thing
positive. Coaches always have same face at end of games. Was coaching up
to last play of Pwep game. Most coaches give up after three qwuaters. You
can talk to these guys easy after a loss. Some coaches you can't go near.
That
team stay nameless. If Bonner keep it up, they gonna be fine. Good
people!"
W. Catholic 34, Wood 21
WEEK NINE
Puck's comment: "I'm gettin'
like Mets. Big lead down to one game.
I am sweatin'. Can't take it no more. I feel I'm at HersheyPark on the
roller-coaster. I was up. Now I comin' down. I feel dizzy. Worse than
ever before. Know who doin' it to me? Teams like Gwatz, North and
Episcopal. Their play makin' me cwazy."
Special note:
"Yo, please start playoffs today. If you don't got three
win, don't deserve to be in postseason. They should combine divisions
for playoffs. West could still be team to beat. Huck gonna love that.
Here my seeds: 1, Pwep; 2, Judge; 3, Roman; 4, West; 5, O'Hara;
6, La Salle; 7, Wood; 8, Carroll or maybe Norf-Wyan winner. That
would make for good matchups, right? People'd be excited. Now they
bored. Waitin' for Wood-West and the Red semis."

Chestnut Hill 34, Haverford School 10

Episcopal 14 "What's with Episcopal?
Play well against
the power Malvern, then lose to GA?"
SJ Prep 42, Bonner 7
Conwell-Egan 24, Neumann-Goretti 6
WEEK EIGHT
Puck's comment: "Yo, I was stupid last week, taking two
team that got
beat by 30-0 and 30-6. Thank you Ovahbwook for beatin' Bahtwam. That
let me stay three up on Huck. Huck is missin' this week West game. That could
kill West because everybody know he really the offensive coordinator for
Fluck. Ha, ha. Hope Fluck got a Halloween bag. He gonna have to pull
some twick out of it. Huck have to go to some wedding. Wonder how
many calls he gonna make to see how West doin'? He knows Burr could
be in trouble. Maybe Fluck gonna be callin' Huck. 'Hey, it third and 8
at the Dougherty 35. What play should we run, Huck?' That funny, right?"
GOOD GAMES
Neumann-Goretti 14, Kennedy-Kenrick
13: "This could be the Super Bowl for
these two team. By the time they done playin', it gonna look like 1 vs.
2."
Frankford 13, Northeast 10: "This the runner-up bowl. Washington kids gonna
be sittin' in the stand, laughin'."
Judge 38, Bonner 7: "Don't forget anything on the way up to Lincoln, Bonner.
You playin' the second best team in Catlic Lig. Better have good practice
all
week. Put gas in you tank. Don't get a flat on way up there." (Ted's
note: What
the heck does this mean?? Ha, ha.)
Norf Catlic 41, La Salle 38: "Might be a free-for-all in passin' with Harrison
vs.
Logue. Lots of points on the scoreboard. No defense, please. Fun game to
watch. The ball will be movin' faster than your eye. Don't blink."
GENERAL NOTE
"Please start the playoffs next
week. We know who gonna be in top 6.
Everything going true to form."

WEEK SEVEN
Puck's comment: "Sorry, Huck.
I had my best record ever -- 23-1.
You was right behind my butt at 22-2. You said last week's Catlic
games was too easy. They pretty easy this week, also . . . What with
the Pub and Inter-Ac? It like only one really good team in each league.
Washington and Malvern are edge and shoulders" (Ted's note: that's
what he said, "edge and shoulders" -- ha ha ha) "over rest of league.
Fwankford just didn't belong on same field with Washington."
BEST GAME
Roman 24, Judge 21 "If Paul Volpe
play"
Roman 24, Judge 7 "If Paul Volpe don't play"
"Sorry, Tom Coyle. You my boy and I ain't even gonna ask you if
Volpe gonna play. Won't make enough of a difference. They are too
good at RB with a superstar. They QB a big-time player, too. And
they got a sneaky-fast receiver. Oh, and a Mack twuck at safety. You
get hit by him, could be out for season. Oh, and a big-time DL. He make
all the stops. Also, the kicking game a plus. That dude good from 40
yard. This Roman team might be too good for Pwep, also. So don't
feel bad losin' to them."

WEEK SIX
Puck's comment: "This for
Huck: I have to start takin' the team that going to win
and not play with my heart. Pickin' O'Hara woulda given me a 4-game lead over
your butt. How do Huck take all those blowouts every week? I almost did it with
Wood. That mighta kill me. Please, we need some games. I have no good read on
West or Wood. Put them in the Red."
Puck's additional comment, after being informed of Huck's
picks: "Man, I
must be getting a genius head now. How Huck gonna make all same picks as me
in Catlic Lig when there are at least four good game? Guess that mean I'm pretty
smart. Whatever in Huck head must be in my head, too. Put that on the webline.
People gonna be rollin'. Puck and Huck got same head. Ha, ha, ha, ha."
GAME OF WEEK
Norf 14, Bonner 10: "Big game
for Norf to get their offense moving and not on
the slow gas." (Ted's note: Huh?) "One TD in two game. Please, this could be the
season for makin' playoffs and we know Bonner a very good defensive team. They
also have a pwoblem gettin' in the end zone. Bonner/North/Ryan have total of two
TDs in two games. Those teams maybe get a chance to fill up their tanks this
week.
And gas expensive. Ha, ha, ha. That sound good."
ANOTHER GOODIE
Judge 21, La Salle 17: "This
could be toughest game to pick. Ain't sure about
Volpe, Judge QB. Is he playin'? Who knows?"

WEEK FIVE
Puck's comment: "I'm
humble. That why I'm not gonna bust Huck b---s. Wait, yes I am. Ha, ha.
C'mon, Huck, I sweep you! What happen, buddy? It like you a baby and I take your
candy. You know
I'm just messin' around. You the man on all this stuff. I'm just Lucky Pucky . .
. Yo, the schedule
horrible this week. They shoulda made Irish Week this weekend. Everybody could
go down shore and
not miss nothing. I have a feeling one of us gonna go 26-0. This week too easy."
MORE THOUGHTS FROM PUCK
"I can't believe Norf playin'
O'Hara on practice field behind school. Why pick on Norf for this? You
coulda played at Widener on Friday night. West/K-K won't draw. They should be at
Penn Wood. Don't
matter where Neumann play Wood. They could play that one on the moon. Weally,
the Blue standings
already set. West 7-0, Wood 6-1, Carroll 5-2 . . . down from dere."

WEEK FOUR
Puck's comment: "Yo, Huck,
let's knock off this tie cwap. Three week
in a row. I can't believe I won on points. Maybe you feel guilty for
jobbin' me through the years with the formula junk? Ha, ha. Kinda
curious that I win on point right after I bust on you about it. Yo, this
Irish Weekend down da shore. Maybe I go down there and have a few
beers instead of going to football games. Could you picture that? People
not believe it, if that happen. They faint right onto floor."
TOP THREE GAMES
Roman 27, Norf Catlic 21: "This
is a TV game. Lotta emotion. Frankford
Stadium not too big, though. TV cameras gonna take up lotta room. I'm
only takin' Roman because of Balial Lewis Sloan-El. Nobody stop him yet.
His numbers weal impwessive. Not even Steve Slaton have those numbers.
Ha, ha. Mike Tos gonna like that one. Maryland coaches made mistake on
Steve. He the real deal. Heisman winner, pwobly. Also dangerous on Roman's
offense is the QB, Johnson, and No. 85 (Albert Desiderio.)
Judge 28, Ryan 24: "Judge scare me with their shaky schedule so far. Ryan
play a better schedule. Might be more prepare in tight game. Tested better.
Like I tell Ted, four team shoulda switched opponents last week. Shoulda
been Episcopal-Judge and Bonner-Neumann. Woulda help Judge get weady."
Malvern 27, McDonogh (Md.) 14: "Won't be a 3-0 game this week, like
McDonogh game with Penn Charter. Dom Damico (McDonogh's coach),
that's my boy. 'Member when he used to coach at Dougherty? Malvern
tough. They good for 27 points. Dom, I hope you bring your offense.
You ain't playin' Penn Charter. You playin' No. 1 team in area! Ha, ha.
Dom gonna like that."

WEEK THREE
Puck's comment: "I ain't worry
about the point cwap with Huck. All matters is wins-losses. It ain't like it
really penalize me when he beat me that way. End of season, it come down to
total wins-losses. I only doin' this for fun, 'member? If I tooked Bosco, I
could have won for the week. I'm OK this way. It was fun wootin' for Pwep. Huck
can have his win with Bosco. Hope he enjoy it. Pickin' against a great pwogram
like Pwep. Pretty soon, I'll be able to bust on him again. Gotta get in fwont,
first."
TOP FIVE GAMES
Dobbins 19, Roxborough 18: "Payin' the Bills gonna be in his glory
with this game. Two of the best newer coaches in the Pub. I'm goin' with the
tradition Dobbins have recently, but I do like Roxborough chance."
Norf Catlic 28, McDevitt 14: "Terrell Oglesby is weally comin' into his
own. Scoring off offense and defense. How cwazy this? He might be more dangerous
than D.R. Yeah, use just initials. Everybody know who he is."
Judge 34, Neumann-Goretti 13: "Most entertaining team in the city. Judge
Crusaders. Can run and pass. It a "pressure" (Ted's note: that's what he said,
not "pleasure") watching them play on both side of ball. But I won't be there.
Gotta wait 'til they face a stronger opponent."
Wood 21, Ryan 20: "Steve Devine (Ted's note: that's what he said, not
"Devlin", even though we've had this discussion MANY times already this season
-- ha ha) might get lost on way to game. Remind him where Washington is.
Somebody give him direction. Steve a Ryan grad, but been away for a while. A lot
of emotion in this one."
Don Bosco 42, O'Hara 17: "I give O'Hawa credit for playin' Bosco. Danny
Algeo will play anybody . . . Hey, 'member last year when somebody was playin'
Bosco the same week somebody else was playin' Hershey? I had a good line about
that chocolate connection. That was funny. 'Member?"

WEEK TWO
Puck's comment: "Yo,
this tie cwap drive me cwazy. Anybody in this world know the formula Huck use?
He sure never explain it to me. Maybe we should make agreement to use one of our
difference games as tie-breaker. That fair, wight? I gonna talk to Huck . . .
Wait, should I leave it this way? What if he beat me a couple time in a row wit
da tie-breaker? That'd make me mad. Know what? I just have to pick more game
wight than him."
TOP FIVE GAMES
Dobbins 14, Lincoln 13:
"Hardest game to pick this week. Goin' with tradition. Yeah, Lincoln used to
have it. Now Dobbins do."
Glen Mills 21, Gratz 16: "This should be great one. Fans gonna have lotta
fun. Just tell everybody to stay cool."
Episcopal 21, Overbrook 16: "Yo, I know (Episcopal coach) Bill Gallagher
didn't see enough of 'Brook vs. Carroll. He and his assistants only stay about 5
minutes. Weally. I was lookin' all over. Couldn't spot them anywhere. Please
stay longer, OK? 'Brook QB threw for over 200 yard. Had none when those guys
left." (Ted's note: I told Bill about Puck's goofy rant. He said his staff
didn't stay longer because they had someone filming the game. By the way, Bill
goes WAY back with Puck. They were classmates at St. Matthew, in Mayfair. Man,
don't you wish Bill had taken pictures back then? They'd be worth millions! Ha,
ha.)
N. Catholic 26, Con.-Egan 10: "How do Norf get 48 points without Daryl
Robinson? That unbelievable. Please. What, T.O. think he the new Daryl? Ha, ha,
ha. C'mon. Only one Daryl. Wish they was only one T.O., too. THIS one. That guy
that used to be on Eagles a nut. Terrell Oglesby cool."
SJ Prep 24, Don Bosco 21 "I
went to this game last year on my birfday and this year they playin' on my
birfday again, Sept. 8. Refs took over and gave Bosco the win on couple bwutal
calls. I hope Philly zebwahs 'member that WE the home team this year. Prep want

WEEK ONE
Puck's comment: "Phew, this
been a rough summer. Reading about Tim Donaghy almost
every damn day not help. Tim, that my boy. 'Member that NBA ref jacket I used to
wear?
Tim gave me that. Other stuff, too. He was always good to me. Anyway, I'm glad
football

be hard.
How many times I gotta beat him? People know who best picker is. Yo, what wit
the Pub?
Three more new school? FitzSimmons" (it's FitzSimons, but that's what Puck said
-- ha ha)
"and Prep Charter and Furness all got team now? Man, this cwazy. Ted, tell these
people.
Not enough player for all these teams."
TOP FIVE GAMES
North Catholic 24, Neumann-Goretti 14
"How North gonna be without their do-it-all guy,
Daryl Robinson? And how Neumann gonna be without their old coach,
Steve Smith?"
Upper Darby 28, Bonner 14 "What idiot gonna fire a coach two day into practice?
Jim
Burner one of my favorite people. No way that cwap make any sense."
SJ Prep 24, North Penn 21 "That gonna be a warpit." (Yes, that was the word he

Roman 28, West Catholic 10 "I keep hearing this gonna be one of Roman's best

year for Germantown.
Last year they open with DeMatha, one of country top five team. Now
