Randy's Weekly Honors, '08

Return to TedSilary.com Home Page

Randy Seidman is a constant at Washington games and this year is again giving out college honors to Philly Guys playing college baseball. Very cool!  Randy graduated from Washington, which his two sons also attended. Randy is an award-winning producer of televised sporting events and now works for CN8, in addition to doing free-lance work for major networks and The News Gleaner. His career highlight -- producing games, on back-to-back days, when Julius Erving scored his 30,000th point and Mike Schmidt slammed his 500th homer. He may be reached at rseidman9@aol.com.
Check out Randy's awards from 2006 and 2007.

Welcome to the third season of the Hometown Philly Awards! When Ted Silary started this site some 5.2 million hits ago, it was devoted to the athletes of the Philadelphia Public, Catholic and Inter-Academic Leagues. Through this decade, Ted and his merry band of reporters have kept the fans in and around Philly informed on the exploits of these players. For those former high school baseball players who have gone on to play in college, they receive the unprecedented honor of being mentioned in Ted’s site for up to an additional four or five years. So in the spirit of levity, and probably not brevity, buckle up and enjoy the ride.

2008 Hometown Philly All-Star & All-Rookie Selections
The third annual Hometown Philly awards were announced appropriately enough on July 4th in Philadelphia. The region was well represented in college baseball throughout America once again. At least 187 players were on season opening rosters, representing 73 different schools. Many teams enjoyed success, thanks to the Philly connection. The University of Virginia would not have reached the ACC championship series against top-ranked Miami if not for the play of freshmen Phil Gosselin (Malvern Prep) and John Barr (Germantown Academy). Temple enjoyed a nine-win improvement over last season, partly due to the contributions of North Catholic's Stan Orzechowski, and Cardinal O'Hara's Sean Barksdale. And the list goes on. Many were selected All-Conference, but for the majority it was the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level, whether it was Division I, II or III, or in junior college. Congratulations to all players and their families, especially to the seniors who just recently finished their college careers. The third annual Hometown Philly Awards include first, second and third Team All-Stars, and All-Rookie selections. In addition, 2008 statistical leaders and previous award winners are included. That is an official wrap for season three. We will reconvene next spring, under either President Obama or President McCain. Wow, should be an eventful summer and fall!! As always, thanks to the daddy of tedsilary.com, the man himself, Ted Silary, for always touting the accomplishments of "our guys."

Hometown Philly News and Notes
This is the next to last posting of season #3 and includes all of the final stats for the Hometown Philly players, and a complete list of home runs. The final posting will announce the All-Hometown Philly All-Star Teams and Player and Rookie of the Year, and it's coming soon.
They Played Thru Mid-June
The final Hometown Philly team to finish its season was the Stanford Cardinal. What an amazing run through the regionals, super regionals, and College World Series. Although un-seeded Stanford fell two wins shy of playing for the championship, they eliminated top-ranked Miami and #5 Cal State Fullerton along the way. Germantown Academy's Billy Vernon made just one early season appearance for Stanford, but he was on the team, making the roster the hard way. He was a walk-on, and impressed the coaches during the 2007 fall workouts. "Everything went better than I expected," Billy said from New York, where he is currently playing for the Saratoga Phillies of the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
Vernon will be one of many battling for pitching time in '09 at Stanford. Spending a season with a national power boasting All-Americans, Billy learned a lot as a freshman. "The most important thing is to keep the ball low," he said. "Throw a strike. Speed is over-rated in the college game. The defense is so much better in college, you really want to let them just put it in play, but keep it low."
As far as his days at Germantown Academy, Billy said his senior season was a lot of fun. However, his freshman season also was memorable. "The 2004 team when I was a freshman was great. We were ranked 6th nationally," Billy said. Among the seniors on that team who went on to play at the College of William and Mary, and recently graduated were Phillies draft-pick and signee Sean Grieve, and Pete Vernon, Billy's older brother. Both just finished stellar careers for the Tribe, and Pete, a sr LHP, finished as the school's all-time leader with 96 appearances. Pete is currently doing well with the New York City Region of the nationally renowned Teach for America.
Concerning next season, Billy said he will give it his best shot, and he'll be OK, after all, he was the 2007 Germantown Academy recipient of "The Juice Award," honoring that senior who led through enthusiasm, example and effort.

No Draft Dodging:
It's June, that means it's time for the Major League Baseball draft. This season, one Hometown Philly player was chosen, ironically by his hometown team. William and Mary sr LHP Sean Grieve (Germantown Academy) was chosen by the Phillies in the 21st round of the 50-round draft. Sean split his first three seasons as a starter and reliever, but in 2008 made 31 appearances, all out of the bullpen. He posted a 4-1 record with six saves, a 3.71 ERA, and 56 strikeouts in 53.1 innings. The six saves represent the sixth most in a season at The College of Billy and Meg. A two-time Inter-Ac League MVP, Sean was named Player of the Year by the Philadelphia Daily News in 2004, when his GA Patriots finished in the top 20 in several national rankings.
In 2007, three Hometown Philly players were selected in the MLB draft: Mike Antonini, Georgia College and State LHP (Cardinal O'Hara), New York Mets 18th round ..... Frank Gailey, West Chester LHP (Archbishop Carroll), Toronto Blue Jays, 23rd round ..... Shane Erb, Hillsborough Community College RHP (Father Judge), Washington Nationals 38th round.

Final Notes on The Draft:
University of Virginia freshmen John Barr (Germantown Academy) and Phil Gosselin (Malvern Prep) saw six of their teammates taken in the draft. Three pitchers and three infielders (1B, 2B, SS) were selected. One of the Cavalier pitchers taken was not a former cast member of Friends, as the Phillies chose 6'8" pitcher Michael Schwimmer in the 14th round.
Monmouth University had two players selected. Look for Ryan Buch's name to appear on the draft board in the next year or two. Through his first two seasons, Ryan (so RHP, Conwell-Egan) has a 15-3 record.
Arizona Diamondbacks 1st round pick (26th overall): pitcher Daniel Schlereth, son of former NFL player and ESPN analyst Mark Schlereth ... Arizona Diamondbacks 38th round pick: RHP Jesse Orosco, Grossmont College (CA), son of the former reliever who at age 51 couldn't be worse than Aaron Heilman or Scott Schoeneweis for the also-rans of Willie Randolph. Other Grossmont alums include Mike Jacobs (Florida Marlins), Marcus Giles (formerly of the Atlanta Braves and San Diego Padres), and the late Joe Kennedy, who played most recently for the Toronto Blue Jays, before his sudden death while celebrating 2007 Thanksgiving with relatives in Tampa, Florida.
University of Miami had five players taken among the first 101 draftees, including three first rounders: 1B Yonder Alonso, the Cuban-born power hitter - 7th overall to Cincinnati ... 2B Jemile Weeks, 12th overall to Oakland (younger brother of Milwaukee Brewers' Rickie Weeks) ... RHP Carlos Gutierrez, 27th overall to Minnesota. Could the 'Canes finish higher than the Washington Nationals in the NL East? Their payrolls are probably similar!
Still to Come:
In the next few weeks, final stats will be posted, as well as the announcement of the 3rd annual Hometown Philly All-Star Teams and Player, Pitcher and Rookie of the Year selections.

The Hometown Philly Player and Rookie of the Week usually lead off the festivities in here, but a big special recognition gets top billing this week. A Philly local did everything he could to bring a national championship to his school.

NCAA Division III World Series, Appleton, WI, May 23-27
* Johns Hopkins was within three outs of their first national baseball championship, but a pair of ninth inning bases loaded walks enabled Trinity (CT) to win the Division III World Series. But if it was not for the efforts of Hopkins pitcher Chez Angeloni, the Blue Jays would not have even reached the championship game.
Winning the South Regional and advancing to only their second World Series appearance (other in 1989), JHU won their opener against unranked Adrian College (MI). In their next game, against the top-ranked team in the nation, Chapman (CA), the starting pitching assignment went to Angeloni, who was the winning pitcher in the regional championship, allowing just one run in 7.1 innings of relief. Against Chapman, the junior righty pitched a complete-game, and earned the 5-4 victory against a team that suffered only its fourth loss of 2008. Angeloni continued an already fantastic season running his record to 8-0, but he was not done just yet. In a battle of World Series unbeatens, Trinity College defeated Johns Hopkins, and advanced to the championship round with a perfect 44-0 record. Playing in an elimination game, JHU then beat Wisconsin-Whitewater, sending the Blue Jays to the Division III championship for the first time in school history.
Needing to beat Trinity twice in the same day, when they had not lost at all this season, seemed like a daunting task. But there was Chez Angeloni, once again getting the starting nod, and once again pitching a complete-game, and recording the win, as JHU held on and spoiled Trinity's perfect season. Hopkins still had unfinished business, and needed a win in game two. After a two-run 8th inning triple gave the Blue Jays a 3-2 lead in the finale, the thoughts of the national championship trophy flying back with the team to Maryland was now a strong possibility. But that's why sports are so great. You usually never know what the outcome will be (especially if Tim Donaghy is not involved in the officiating). With Trinity's walk-off walks providing the tying and winning runs, Johns Hopkins was denied the championship, but as a small comfort, Angeloni was named as the Division III World Series Most Outstanding Player. Chez finished his junior season with an unblemished 9-0 record, and will go down as the only pitcher to defeat Trinity College in their 2008 championship season.
Reached at his hotel room in Wisconsin, Chez was gracious enough to give me a few moments. "It has been a long day," he said. "I am emotionally drained. It is truly unbelievable to come so close and to be leaving with second place. I am disappointed to lose the way that we did and truly feel for our 17 seniors who are just now coming out of shock and beginning to remember some of the more enjoyable moments of this amazing season."
"I've been going through this championship in my head for about a month now and each time we came out on top,'' he continued. "We couldn't ask for a better opportunity to prove ourselves champs than to beat the unbeaten Trinity Bantams twice. When we got the lead in the 8th I couldn't contain myself. I felt the same way when we won regionals as well as the Centennial Conference, like we could not be stopped. When they came back, I was humbled. I thought we would taste the win and close the door hard. The noise and pressure was enough to bleed ground balls through and to inch fastballs out of the zone."
After pitching back-to-back complete games on just two days of rest, Chez is still recovering. "I am quite sore but I have been taking good care of myself," he commented. "I have dealt with short rest in the past so I don't feel anything out of the ordinary. My whole body aches, my hips and legs most, then my neck and back." Chez should have ample time to refresh his system before he continues playing in the Texas Collegiate League. "I will be staying with a host family in Dallas,' he stated. "I am due in Dallas on June 8th and I am very excited to get back on the hill."

STAN ORZECHOWSKI
TEMPLE UNIVERSITY
(NORTH CATHOLIC)
HT: 6-0     WT: 190        SR OF
PHILADELPHIA, PA
The Temple Owls made their first trip to the A-10 Baseball Tournament since 2002, after posting a school record 16 conference wins in the regular season. The Owls lost their opener against Rhode Island, bounced back to knock out St. Bonaventure, and were then eliminated by Duquesne. Senior center fielder and leadoff man Stan Orzechowski had a memorable tournament, a fitting end to a successful college career split between Temple and Gloucester County College. In the three tournament games, Stan batted .583 (7-12), with 5 RBI, 5 runs, a pair of triples and a stolen base. For his accomplishments, Stan was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Tournament Team. This was his second selection as Hometown Philly Player of the Week this season.
On the season, Stan led the Owls with 57 runs, 4 triples and 7 home runs. His 57 runs rank fifth on the single season list at Temple. Coach Rob Valli's squad finished overall with 27 wins, the most at North Broad Street since 1999, and posted a nine-win improvement over last year's win total.

JOHN BARR
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
(GERMANTOWN ACADEMY)
HT: 6-2      WT: 190     FRESHMAN OF
IVYLAND, PA
It was a whirlwind week for John Barr and the Virginia Cavaliers in the ACC Baseball Championship at Jacksonville, FL. Fighting for the chance to be selected to the 64-team NCAA Tournament, the Cavs more than earned their ticket by defeating #1 North Carolina, then two days later beating #3 Florida State. This was a team that was not on people's radar to reach the ACC championship game, but there they were with a pair of Philly freshmen in the starting lineup: Barr and Malvern Prep's DH/SS Phil Gosselin. Although Virginia lost to a potent #2 ranked Miami Hurricanes for the ACC title, the NCAA selection committee rewarded the Cavs with an at-large berth in the 4-team regional hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
Barr hit safely in all four games of the ACC Tournament (.333, 5-15), and also made a game-saving catch with the bases loaded in the 11th inning in a victory against top-ranked North Carolina. In that game, John led the Cavaliers’ offense with two hits, three runs scored and two stolen bases. With little power in their lineup, the Cavs have played small-ball, and are fifth in the nation in steals per game. Barr has 4 steals and Gosselin has 6 of the team's single-season record (134).
Third-seeded Virginia's tourney opener is against #2 seed UCLA this Friday night at 7:00. It was be UVA's first-ever appearance in California. Their second game, on Saturday night at 7 or 11 pm will be against #4 seed Rider or #1 seed Cal State Fullerton in the double-elimination format, with the winner advancing to the Super Regionals.
John has now won back-to-back Hometown Philly Rookie of the Week honors. In the three year history of the awards, the only other player selected in consecutive weeks was Bloomsburg's Kevin Ward (Monsignor Bonner), who was the top rookie for the weeks ending April 23 and April 30, 2006. Ward just completed his junior season with the Huskies.

Hometown Philly's Player of the Week
for week ending May 18, 2008

CHEZ ANGELONI
JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY
(LaSALLE HIGH SCHOOL)
HT: 6-2     WT: 190       JR RHP
JENKINTOWN, PA
Thanks to a six-run first inning, and an impressive relief stint by Chez Angeloni, the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays are going to the College World Series for just the second time in school history. Their only other appearance was in 1989. Johns Hopkins (38-6) advanced to the Big D-3 Dance in Appleton, Wisconsin, by winning the NCAA South Regional title, played in Danville, VA. The Blue Jays turned to Angeloni in the second inning, leading by a 6-3 count. He made 9 of his 12 appearances as a starter this season, so Chez is accustomed to giving his team innings. He would allow just two hits and three total base runners from the fourth inning on, as the Blue Jays prevailed with the 9-4 win against a Salisbury team that was ranked fourth, and finished its season with a gaudy 40-4 record.
Angeloni pitched the final 7.1 innings, yielding one run on six hits, with no walks and four whiffs. He remains unbeaten in 2008, as he ran his record to 7-0, and lowered his ERA to 4.56. His control has been a big factor to his success this season, as he averaged 2.1 walks per nine innings, while fanning three times that many, 6.4 per nine. The 5th-ranked Blue Jays will fly out to Cheeseland later this week, as plays gets underway on Friday, May 23. Their opening round game will be against unranked Adrian College (MI).
In 2005, Chez helped LaSalle HS win the Catholic League championship. He was also named as their Most Outstanding Senior Athlete that season.
Honorable Mention:
* Sean Barksdale, Temple jr OF (Cardinal O'Hara) 4 GP last week: .471 (8-17), 6 RBI, 6 R, 4 SB (current 13-game hit streak)
* Josh Eidell, Villanova jr RHP (Kennedy-Kenrick)  earned 4th win, 4 scoreless innings in relief vs St. John's as Wildcats clinch postseason berth
* Tom Elliott, Georgetown soph SS (St. Joseph's Prep)  Final 3 games: .500 (5-9), 3 RBI, 2 doubles, Season: .325 Avg, .392 OBP
* Brian Meagher, LaSalle soph SS (Monsignor Bonner) Walk-off double, walk-off single in sweep over St. Joe's to end the season
* Josh Rickards, Marist jr LHP (Cardinal O'Hara) May 15 vs Siena: 6.2 IP, 1 ER, 2-1 loss (Last 4 starts: 1.10 ERA, 32.2 IP, Season: 2.60 era)

Hometown Philly's Rookie of the Week
for week ending May 18, 2008
JOHN BARR
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
(GERMANTOWN ACADEMY)
HT: 6-2      WT: 190     FRESHMAN OF
IVYLAND, PA
Virginia head coach Brian O'Connor is hoping that freshman John Barr can continue his late-season batting surge. By collecting 8 hits in 17 at bats over the last five games, John saw his batting average climb over the .300 mark. As the Cavaliers prepare for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship this week, Barr's season average stands at .311. In four games last week, John batted .429 (6-14), with 2 runs, 2 RBI, and a .500 OBP. On May 15, he led the #28 Cavaliers with a career high three hits in a 4-2 win against #25 Georgia Tech.
It has been a hot and cold campaign for the outfielder. He started and ended his first collegiate regular season on high notes, with a couple of bumps along the way: first 8 games: .444 (8-18), next 10: .000 (0-14), next 6: .467 (7-15), next 8: .192 (5-26), last 5: .471 (8-17). In 37 games, he made 28 starts, including the last five games, and 16 of the last 18. John has split his time between playing left field and center field, and also DH'd on several occasions. UVA begins play in the ACC playoffs on Wed., May 21 with an 8pm game vs the #2 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. Miami (FL) is ranked 1st.
Last season, John batted .464 for Craig Conlin's Germantown Academy Patriots. The three-time All-InterAc selection (MVP in 2006) also hurled a perfect game in last season's opener.

* West Chester (45-16) won three of their first four games, and reached the championship round of the North Atlantic Regional against Shippensburg, the team that handed the Golden Rams their only loss.     Johns Hopkins (38-6), the #5 team in the nation will play their opening game against Adrian College (MI), the upset winner of the Mideast Regional. STAN ORZECHOWSKI
TEMPLE UNIVERSITY
(NORTH CATHOLIC)
HT: 6-0     WT: 190        SR OF
PHILADELPHIA, PA
The Temple Owls are hoping to reach the postseason for the first time since 2002. They are currently in fifth place in the conference, entering the final weekend of the season. The top six teams in the league will advance to the A-10 tournament, which begins May 21 at Campbell's Field. Doing his part to help his team is senior center fielder Stan Orzechowski. He is finishing up his collegiate career, playing as a freshman and sophomore at Gloucester County College, and his junior and senior seasons with the Owls.
Moved to the leadoff spot early this season, Stan posted a .388 on-base percentage, and scored 50 runs in the Owls' 49 games. In four games last week, Stan was on base in 7 of 17 plate appearances, and scored another five runs. He connected for his 5th and 6th home runs of the year against Delaware and Dayton, and has now gone yard in three of his last five contests.
Stan was a first team All-Catholic selection as a junior and senior at North Catholic. As a senior, he smashed 11 homers.  He was also a four-year letterman in ice hockey.

Hometown Philly's Rookie of the Week
for week ending May 11, 2008
JARED FARBMAN
PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY
(CENTRAL)
HT: 6-4   WT: 175     FRESHMAN RHP
PHILADELPHIA, PA
Philadelphia U's Jared Farbman must enjoy the big stage. He was the starting pitcher in each of the last two Public League championship games at Campbell's Field, home of the independent Camden Riversharks. As a collegiate freshman, he was given the starting assignment in last week's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) playoff opener at William Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, home to the Carolina League's Wilmington Blue Rocks. The 6'4" righty got the job done with flying colors. With the Rams offense scoring in each of the first four innings, Jared was staked to an 8-0 lead, and he pitched a complete-game six-hit shutout, as Philly U rolled to a 13-0 romp over Felician College. It was Jared's third shutout of the season, and he ran his record to an eye-popping 6-0, with a 2.89 ERA. The freshman led his team in wins, shutouts, appearances (14), and strikeouts (54, in 62 innings). Farbman held opponents to a .223 batting average.
Although the Rams lost their next two games, and were prevented from reaching the NCAA regionals, they finished with a 22-22 overall record, and captured a share of the CACC regular season title with a 19-8 conference record. Not bad considering they last their first eight games of the season.
For his achievements, Jared was a CACC honorable mention All-Conference honoree. This was also his third selection as Hometown Philly Rookie of the Week this season.
Honorable Mention:
* John Barr, Virginia OF (Germantown Academy) led #24 Cavaliers with 2 hits in 5-4 win vs #2 North Carolina, May 11

Going to the Big Dance:
It's been a long time since the Columbia Lions last won the Ivy League baseball championship 31 years ago. But the Lions will advance to the NCAA Division I championship regionals from May 30-June 2. It's quite a thrill for the Haverford School's Noah Cooper to play his last collegiate game in the NCAA tourney. The senior center fielded batted .329 in 47 games this season, and hit a home run in game one of the best-of-three championship series against Dartmouth. Seedings and sites will be announced on May 26.
Sick of Each Other:
A pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) rivals will play each other in the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional at Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The West Chester Rams lost to the Kutztown Golden Bears in the PSAC title game. But based on their successful season, West Chester (41-14) received the regional's #1 seed, while Kutztown (30-24) gets the #8 seed. For the Rams, senior center fielder Frank Nunan (Monsignor Bonner) has had a stellar senior season, batting .342, and stealing 17 bases. Kutztown sophomore lefty Ryan Cassidy (Archbishop Wood) played a major role in the PSAC playoffs, making three appearances, recording a win, with a 1.50 ERA in 6 innings. Regionals winners will meet in the 41st annual D-II championship, to be held in Sauget, Illinois on May 24-31. By the way, these two teams recently played each other seven times over a nine-day span, with Kuztown holding a 5-2 advantage.
The Ultimate D-III Destination - Cheeseland:
Four teams with Hometown Philly players have been selected to play in the NCAA Division III Regionals to be played May 14-May 18. Johns Hopkins (34-5), the 10th-ranked Blue Jays received the #2 seed playing in the Danville, VA regional. Junior right-hander Chez Angeloni (LaSalle HS) will try to improve on his 6-0 record for Hopkins. Three teams will play in Newark, NJ in the regional hosted by Kean University, also the top seed: Rowan (30-12), is the #2 seed. Rob Ritterson (Washington) has played first and DH'd for the Profs this season; DeSales (24-18-1) earned an automatic bid by winning the Freedom Conference championship. Junior 1B Zac Hess has been a force this season with a .338 avg, 8 HR, 38 RBI in 42 games; Gwynedd-Mercy (21-18), the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference champion features ten Hometown Philly players. A trio who provided key contributions this season are Nick DiEnno (Archbishop Ryan), a second team All-Conference selection, Kyle Reynolds (Cardinal O'Hara), who has shattered school career records for saves, appearances and games finished, and soph OF Albert DiDomenico (Neumann-Goretti), who batted .286, with a .390 OB%.
Eight first-round winners will advance to the double-elimination championship on May 23-27 at Appleton, Wisconsin.

Hometown Philly's Player of the Week
for week ending May 4, 2008

MATT ZIELINSKI
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND
(LaSALLE HIGH SCHOOL)
HT: 6-3     WT: 200        SOPH LHP
SOUTHAMPTON, PA
Repeating what he had done as a freshman, Matt Zielinski is mowing batters down in the latter part of the season after a slow start. Last week he earned a win against Saint Louis, by pitching 7.1 innings, allowing four hits and one run, while fanning six and improving his season record to 5-1. Overcoming early season injury problems, Zielinski has really turned it on, and his Spiders will need a late push to gain a berth in the upcoming A-10 playoffs. Over his last 4 starts, Matt has a 3-0 record with a 1.23 ERA. In 29.1 innings over that span, he allowed 24 hits and recorded 21 strikeouts. Two starts ago, he won at Dayton, 5-0, twirling Richmond's first nine-inning, complete-game shutout since 2004.
Last season, Matt was selected the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, becoming the first Richmond freshman ever to win that honor. He was also named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team, and was a freshman All-American.
Matt was a first Team All-Catholic as a junior and senior at La Salle College High School. On June 17, 2005, he was the starting and winning pitcher as the Catholic League won the Carpenter Cup championship at Citizens Bank Ballpark. Another local product playing in Virginia's capital, is Anthony Cafagna, a freshman righthander from Chestnut Hill Academy.
Honorable Mention:

BURLINGTON COUNTY COLLEGE
(NORTH CATHOLIC)
HT: 6-5     WT: 210        FRESHMAN 1B/OF
PHILADELPHIA, PA
For a player who has been ripping the ball all season long, it makes sense that he would step up in a playoff series. Derrek Etsell helped Burlington County College defeat Middlesex County in a Junior College Regional last weekend, enabling the Barons to advance to a double-elimination bracket later this week. Burlington won the best-of-three series two games to one, as Derrek batted .333 (5-15), with 2 HRs and 9 RBIs. Since April 12, he has been on a 14-game hitting streak, batting .419 (26-62) during that span. That is just slightly higher than his very robust .407 season batting average. There are a pair of Catholic Leaguers on the Barons roster: sophomore RHP Matt Compton (Father Judge) and soph 1B Pete Fischer (Roman Catholic).
Last season, Derrek was a Second Team All-Catholic selection, as North Catholic reached the semifinals for the first time since 1995. Derrek's younger brother, Ryan Etsell, is a sophomore standout for the Falcons this season.

ERICH ENNS
MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE
(GERMANTOWN ACADEMY)
HT: 6-3     WT: 180      SOPH OF
LANSDALE, PA
It was a record-setting week for Middlebury College's Erich Enns. In game two of a doubleheader last Saturday against Hamilton College (NY), Erich went 5-for-6, with a pair of singles and a school single-game record three home runs and eight RBIs. In five games last week, the sophomore hit .500 (9-18), with seven walks (.640 OB%). Of those nine hits, six went for extra bases (1 triple and 5 HRs), as he drove in 14 runs and scored nine times.
For his exploits, Erich was also selected as the conference player of the week. Middlebury belongs to the New England Small College Athletic Association (NESCAC). The school, founded in 1800, is located in the Champlain Valley of central Vermont, nestled between Vermont's Green Mountains and New York's Adirondacks. With an enrollment of approximately 2,350 students, class size averages to 16 students per class. Other schools in the NESCAC are Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Connecticut College, Hamilton, Trinity, Tufts, Wesleyan and Williams. There are three other local products playing in the conference. Penn Charter's Jim Entwistle is a sophomore infielder at Williams (MA), Haverford School's Nick Tom is a sophomore outfielder at Bowdoin (ME), and Erich's high school teammate from Germantown Academy, Mark Shimrock, also attends Middlebury. By the way, Shimrock, a junior, has put up huge numbers this season for the Panthers, sporting a .411 batting average with 4 HRs and 37 RBI in 27 games.
Erich was a first Team All Inter-Academic League selection in 2006, as Germantown Academy won their third Inter-Ac title in four seasons.

JARED FARBMAN
PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY
(CENTRAL)
HT: 6-4   WT: 175     FRESHMAN RHP
PHILADELPHIA, PA
The amazing turn-around continues at Philadelphia University. The Rams started the season with a tough non-conference schedule and lost their first eight games, and won only once in their first 13 games. But since that point, Philly U has been on a torrid pace, and even took possession of first place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) with a 16-7 league mark. Freshman pitcher Jared Farbman was able to help his team in a variety of roles last week. In the Rams' 9-3 win against Chestnut Hill College last Tuesday, Jared started and pitched seven innings, allowing three earned runs and fanning five, while running his season record to 5-0. Four days later, Farbman came out of the bullpen and notched his first career save as Philly U defeated Felician College, 10-8, in the first game of a doubleheader. In the nightcap, the athletic Farbman pinch-ran and scored a run in the 11th inning, but the Rams fell 4-3. By the way, Farbman scored on an RBI single by fellow Public Leaguer Brandon O'Malley (Northeast).
Philly U started the season 0-8, record since 18-11
This was Jared's second selection as Hometown Rookie of the Week this season.

HANEEF HILL
VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY
(GERMANTOWN)
HT: 5-8     WT: 180      SR RHP
PHILADELPHIA, PA

It has been a long journey from the streets of Germantown to the campus of Virginia State University for Haneef Hill. The senior right-hander is wrapping up his career with the Trojans in style. He was the winning pitcher in his final home game as VSU won the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Baseball Tournament. After posting victories in the first two games of the tourney, head coach Merrill Morgan handed Haneef the ball for the CIAA championship game, and he did not disappoint. The Trojans won the title, 14-7, against Saint Augustine's, as Hill recorded his fifth win of the season. It was also his third complete-game of the season. The senior Sports Management major allowed eight hits in his nine innings, with four earned runs and three strikeouts.
The title was the 24th CIAA crown in the history of the VSU baseball program, which began in 1923. VSU has an enrollment of 4,300, and is located in Petersburg, VA. Other CIAA members: Saint Augustine's (Raleigh, NC), Bowie State (MD), Elizabeth City State (NC), Saint Paul's (Lawrenceville, VA), Virginia Union (Richmond, VA), Fayetteville State (NC), Johnson C. Smith (Charlotte, NC), Livingstone (Salisbury, NC), and Shaw (Raleigh, NC).
Haneef was a First-Team All-Public honoree in 2004, and was on that year's Public League Carpenter Cup roster, coached by Frankford's Bob Peffle.

RYAN TERRY
MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY
(CONWELL-EGAN)
HT: 6-0      WT: 190        3B
LEVITTOWN, PA
The Monmouth Hawks have been having a blast for about 6 weeks now. That's when they went on an amazing, extended run of solid baseball, winning 24 of their last 25 games. Monmouth started that stretch with a school record 15-game winning streak. Starting with the third game of that streak, Ryan Terry has been in the starting lineup, mostly at third base, and has been an offensive force. In four games last week, he batted .600 (9-15), with 7 runs scored. In addition, he hit his 5th homer of the season and stroked three doubles. Through games of April 25, Ryan is batting .349. After the Hawks record setting win streak was snapped (at Wagner, Apr. 12), they reeled off another 9 straight wins, and sport a 26-9 record.
First 10 Games:  Monmouth   2-8     Ryan Terry .222  (4-18),  0 HR,   2 RBI
Next 25 Games: Monmouth  24-1    Ryan Terry .374 (34-91), 5 HR, 24 RBI
This was Ryan's second selection as Hometown Rookie of the Week this season.
Honorable Mention:
* Sean Quigley, Neumann IF (Roman Catholic) last week at the plate: 3-7, and made 1st pitching appearance, recording the win in 3.1 IP
* Mike Martinelli, Scranton OF (LaSalle HS) April 16 vs Kings: 3-4, 4 R, April 20th vs Juniata: 1st collegaite pitching appearance: 1.1 IP, 2 R

First to Finish:
There are 73 teams that feature the talents of players from the Catholic, Inter-Ac and Public Leagues. The first of those teams to finish its season are the Lincoln University Lions. The Hometown Philly Awards accentuate the positive, so there is no need to even mention Lincoln's 1-22-1 season record. However, one guy stuck it out for four seasons, put up some pretty numbers, and will get his degree in Business Administration. West Catholic grad Duane Wyse finished his career at Lincoln with a .291 batting average in 78 games, with a remarkable 77 stolen bases in 82 attempts (94%). He was among the top five in NCAA stolen bases per game as a soph and junior. Josiah Barnes, a senior from Overbrook High has also played his last game. He appeared at five positions (1B, 3B, RF, C, P). As a pitcher, he was often asked to "take one for the team" against much stronger opponents, therefore some of his pitching totals were askew. However, although not a Hometown Philly product, teammate Peter Reyes (Bronx, NY) deserves the Purple Heart. He was the starting and losing pitcher in a 30-0 shutout on April 13th against Briarcliffe. His line: 2.2 IP, 24 H, 26 R, 16 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 2 HB.
The second team to wrap it up for this season was Guilford College (NC). Chestnut Hill Academy's Mike Braverman saw spot duty in his just completed junior season. The Guilford Quakers final record was 17-22 overall, 6-12 Old Dominion Athletic Conference. In the spirit of the 76ers NBA playoff appearance, what former Sixer (actually still with the team), went to Guilford, and eventually finished as the NBA's second leading scorer in back-to-back seasons with the San Diego Clippers? Answer later on - I lied, the answer is now - its Lloyd B. Free, now known as World B. Free, currently the 76ers Director of Player Development/Basketball Ambassador)

Celebrating John Marzano

All of the family, friends, former teammates, colleagues and fans of the late John Marzano are feeling an emptiness. He brightened the lives of so many, yet he was just one of us. A native son of Philly. A Public League star at Central. He played at Temple under the legendary master, Skip Wilson. He went on to play major league baseball, the dream of so many, but a reality for so few. Yet there he was spending ten seasons with the Red Sox, Rangers and Mariners. And then to become such a popular fixture in the local media, most notably with his work on Comcast SportsNet's Phillies Postgame. John Marzano is the epitome of a Hometown Philly player - a scrapper, a real blue collar kind of player, who persevered and was successful in a game he loved, and then came back home to give a piece of himself back to the community ...

(MONSIGNOR BONNER)
HT: 6-3   WT: 210   SOPH OF
DREXEL HILL, PA
  Steve DeBarberie
would not mind if Alvernia could schedule Eastern University more than the 3 games they played this season. In his 20 games played prior to the 3-game weekend series vs Eastern, Steve was hitting .164 with 0 HR and 6 RBI. After the series sweep, his season average ballooned to .333, to go along with s 5 HR and 20 RBI. Other than T-ball, I couldn’t ever imagine anybody hitting .882 in a series, but that’s what 15 hits in 17 at bats will do. He homered in three straight games, and reached base safely in 10 consecutive plate appearances. Phew! My keyboard is burning up!
The Crusaders are hoping this will jump-start Steve for the remainder of the season. After all, he did hit .339 (42-124) in 38 games as a freshman last season, and was named to the Honorable Mention All-Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Team.
Steve was a second team All-Catholic selection as a senior at Bonner in 2006.
The numbers (thru 4/13) - they don't lie .....
1st 20 Gms:  .164   (9-55), 0 HR,   6 RBI,  5 R,  1 2B

Hometown Philly's Rookie of the Week
for week ending April 13, 2008
JARED FARBMAN
PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY
(CENTRAL)
HT: 6-4   WT: 175     FRESHMAN RHP
PHILADELPHIA, PA
Philadelphia University Head Coach Mark Heineman has been at Campbell's Field to watch the last two Public League championships games between Central and Frankford. Jared Farbman started both games for Central, and he and the Lancers won in 2006, with Frankford winning in 2007, their fourth title in five years. Apparently the coach liked what he saw in the lanky righthander, and it is paying big dividends for the Philly U program.
Last week, Jared tossed a 3-hitter in a 10-0 shutout against Bloomfield College. He walked two and struck out ten, in his second shutout of his freshman season. In his most recent start, he allowed three hits and no earned runs in 5.2 innings to run his record to 4-0. For the second straight game, Farbman notched 10 strikeouts. Most importantly, his four wins have all come after Philly losses. Jared's first win came when his team's record stood at 0-8, his second win when they were 1-12. The Rams and their emerging ace have turned it around, and their record through April 16 is 10-16.
Honorable Mention:
* Kevin Culbert, Widener RHP (Cardinal O'Hara) last week: 2 GP, 1-0, 6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 9 K (season: 0.96 ERA, 6 SV, 28 IP, 4 BB, 34 K)

* Pete Greskoff, Brown 1B (Malvern Prep) last week: 3 GP, .667 (6-9), 2 HR, 8 RBI, 4 R, 2 doubles
More Central Casting:
Two of Jared Farbman's teammates from Central are also performing at a high level. Brandon Watson is a senior outfielder from Elizabethtown College. Last season, he batted .350, and was named to the First Team All Commonwealth Conference team. Career stats: .311 BA, 78 G, 79 H, .395 OB%. Junior Andrew Reynolds has been in the starting lineup for three seasons for Eastern University. He has been a valuable and versatile player (3B, DH, RHP), and has batted 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th this season. Career stats (very comparable to Watson). .314 BA, 76 G, 70 H, .418 OB%.

RYAN BUCH
MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY
(CONWELL-EGAN)
HT: 6-3      WT: 195      SOPH RHP
YARDLEY, PA
Ryan Buch is no sophomore slumper. After an award-filled freshman season, Ryan is not resting on his laurels. Not only is he 3-1 on the season, but his Monmouth Hawks just tied a school record with their 13th consecutive win. This past weekend, Monmouth swept Sacred Heart in a 4-game series to open Northeast Conference play. In game one of a Sunday doubleheader, Ryan got the start, and pitched a gem. Monmouth's 17-0 drubbing of Sacred Heart was Ryan's first collegiate shutout. He pitched a seven-inning complete game and allowed just one hit and struck out a career-high 14. Ryan had a no-hitter through 5.1 innings, and for his exploits was chosen as the Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week.
In 2007, Ryan recorded nine wins, setting a freshman record at Monmouth, and was chosen as the Conference Rookie of the Year. The Hawks were eliminated in the NCAA Regionals after losing to #5 Arizona State and Nebraska. Ryan started the Nebraska game and had a 4-2 lead when he was lifted for a reliever in the 7th inning.
Ryan was a member of the undefeated 2006 Catholic League champions. Conwell Egan finished the season No. 1 in Pennsylvania, No. 4 in the East and No. 29 nationally.

MIKE COLEMAN
SAINT JOSEPH'S UNIVERSITY
(MONSIGNOR BONNER)
HT: 5-9      WT: 170      OF/DH
DREXEL HILL, PA
Freshman Mike Coleman is currently getting his chance to shine for Saint Joseph’s. He appeared in 13 of the Hawks’ first 26 games, mostly in spot duty, and totaled just 13 at bats. However, after making four straight starts last week, and helping ignite the St. Joe’s offense from the top of the order, Mike might not be coming out of the starting lineup anytime soon. In those four starts, the redshirt freshman batted .357 (5-14), and was on base in 11 of 20 plate appearances. With Mike’s efficient week, his batting average rose to .333 and he went over the .500 mark in on-base pct (.514).
Mike batted .426 and .460 in his last two seasons at Bonner. He also captained and was a three-year letterman of the ice hockey team.
Honorable Mention:
* Ryan Kreider, Mercer Community College RHP (Father Judge) 2 scoreless relief appearances: 4.1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K

More Monmouth
Monmouth won the Northeast Conference championship last season with two area freshmen: Conwell-Egan's Ryan Buch and Archbishop Carroll's Andy McDonnell. I guess word must have filtered out that they had a positive experience, as four more Delaware Valley natives have joined them at the West Long Branch, NJ campus. New to the team are two more players from Conwell-Egan, Ryan Terry and John McDonald, and a pair of Malvern Prep graduates, Matt McEndy and brother Tim McEndy, who transferred after redshirting last season for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. The Hawks travel to Staten Island to play Wagner on Friday afternoon, in hopes of setting a school-record with their 14th straight win.

SEAN MURPHY
HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY
(NORTH CATHOLIC)
HT: 6-4      WT: 190      SOPH RHP
PHILADELPHIA, PA
It really was a high point for North Catholic alum Sean Murphy when he took the mound last Saturday. The sophomore Salem Community College transfer was making his 7th appearance, but just his third start at the D-I level for the High Point (NC) Panthers. Locked in a pitchers' duel, Sean emerged with a 2-1 win against Big South Conference foe UNC-Asheville. He went 8 innings, allowed just 3 hits and 1 unearned run, with a walk and a season-high 7 strikeouts, in picking up his first win of the season. Season numbers: 4.08 ERA, 28.2 IP, 32 H, 7 BB, 20 K. Sean is making his case for staying in the rotation. He has been impressive in his last two outings, allowing just one earned run in 13.1 innings.
A couple of interesting tidbits about High Point’s win against UNC-Asheville: 1) UNC-Asheville is home for gargantuan 7’7” 360-lb Kenny George. The junior center from Chicago led the basketball team to an NIT berth. His ‘07-08 stats for the Bulldogs: 28 games (1 start), 12.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.3 blocks, 19.8 minutes, 70% FGs, 65% FTs, 0-0 3-PT FGs ... and 2) Sean Murphy's manager at High Point is Sal Bando, Jr., the former college All-Star. At the Univ. of Arizona, he played with Trevor Hoffman, Scott Erickson, and JT Snow. He also played at Oklahoma State, a fourth place finisher in the 1993 College World Series. Sal, Jr. played a few seasons in the Cardinals system. His brother Chris Bando, spent 8 seasons as a catcher for the Cleveland Indians. Of course, the old man, Sal Bando, Sr. played 16 major-league seasons with the Oakland A’s and Milwaukee Brewers. Bando, Sr. captained the A's to three consecutive World Series Championships, and later was the general manager for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Honorable Mention:
* Chez Angeloni

RYAN TERRY
MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY
(CONWELL-EGAN)
HT: 6-0      WT: 190      IF/OF/DH/C
LEVITTOWN, PA

A player’s versatility is a key factor when any baseball coach fills out his lineup card. Ryan Terry has earned increased playing time in his freshman season, and has produced. In Monmouth’s first 15 games, Ryan has been in the lineup at third base, left and right field, catcher and designated hitter. In a 3-game sweep of NJ Tech last week, Ryan had 7 hits in 14 at bats, with 7 runs scored, his first collegiate HR, and 4 RBI. In 10 games this season (7 starts), Terry is batting .324 with a .410 OBP.
Ryan was a key contributor in Conwell-Egan’s 2006 Catholic League championship season when he batted .431, as his team went 14-0 in league play and finished 22-5 overall.
Honorable Mention:
* Jared Farbman, Philadelphia U (Central) complete-game 2-hit shutout vs Univ. of Sciences (2 BB, 5 K)

What's In a Name?

While going through college rosters from Missoula, Montana through the University of South Florida, many interesting names popped up. Here are some of the highlights:
* Brooks Robinson, Georgia College and State. No relation to the Orioles' great - career goal: be a pro athlete - position, third base, where else?
* Chuck Boring, Pitt-Johnstown jr RHP, not much to say about this uninteresting player, other than he hails from Dilltown, PA, Hey, I don't make this stuff up, OK?
* David Huey, Pitt-Johnstown sr RHP, this Boring teammate doesn't have a wacky name, but he resides in Glen Campbell, PA. This Rhinestone Cowboy attended Punxsutawney High School (with Gus the Groundhog?)
* Matt Helm, Marshall sr IF, Downingtown, PA native has the same name as Dean Martin's private eye from a series of 1970s James Bonds wanna-be movies, with sizzling co-star Stella Stevens. Matt's dad, Jack Helm, played baseball and football at Penn ... and has a sense of humor!
* Tony Bernazard, Jacksonville soph IF - Princeton, NJ star playing in the south. His father, Tony, is the New York Mets VP for Player Development. He also chairs the Mets committee on "How to Avoid Another Late Season Meltdown."
* Vinny Dammann, Pace (NY) soph OF - ex-Gloucester Catholic player - Vinny really is "De Man"
* Angelo Bruno, Stonehill (MA) fr IF/P - I am not saying anything bad about this guy!!
* But this season's favorite goes to an outfielder from the University of Alabama-Huntsville. This 6-3 junior bats and throws right-handed, and although he steals a lot (12 SB), claims that he did not chop down ANY cherry tree - yes, it is George Washington. For the season, GW is batting a very presidential .312 in 22 starts for the Chargers.

DAN METAGUE
DELAWARE VALLEY COLLEGE
(CARDINAL DOUGHERTY)
SENIOR RIGHT HANDED PITCHER
SOUTHAMPTON, PA
For his complete-game shutout win against Utica College on March 20, Dan was chosen as the Hometown Philly Player of the Week. Delaware Valley College won the game, 12-0, in Fort Pierce, Florida, during their spring training visit. Metague yielded consecutive singles with one out in the third. Those would be the only base runners he would allow. He walked none, and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts.
On the season, the Aggies are 8-7 through March 27. In 4 appearances, Dan sports a 2-0 record, with a 2.94 ERA, and 21 strikeouts in 15.1 innings.This was not Dan's only accolade of the week. He was also named on campus as the Delaware Valley College/Pete's Pizza Athlete of the Week. Pretty heady stuff, huh? Dan was a First-Team All-Catholic selection at Cardinal Dougherty in 2003, and played for that season's Catholic League Carpenter Cup team.

FROM THE PUB TO THE BIGS
For the last three seasons, Chris Calciano, the former Lamberton High star, coached the Georgia College and State Bobcats. He guided his team to the Peach Belt Conference championship and reached the NCAA Regionals in each of the last two seasons. At GCSU, Calciano coached Mike Antonini (Cardinal O'Hara) and Brett DeFelice (Chestnut Hill Academy). Antonini was selected by the Mets in last season's draft, while DeFelice is a sophomore batting .327 for the Bobcats.
Last October, the college announced Calciano's departure to become a scout for the Boston Red Sox. He will oversee the Mid-Atlantic Region, covering Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and parts of Pennsylvania for the defending Major League champions. His career record at GCSU was 132-48 (.733), including a nine-week run atop the Division II polls during the 2006 season. “I'm excited about the transition from coaching college baseball to professional scouting and looking forward to identifying and signing the top amateur talent in the Mid-Atlantic region for the Boston Red Sox," said Calciano.

The West Chester Golden Rams are one of the early-season success stories in area college baseball. With a 16-game winning streak to start 2008, and a consistent spot in the Top 10 national rankings, West Chester is poised and ready to enter conference play. Their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener is March 28 vs Millersville. An ingredient of West Chester's quick start, are the quick feet of centerfielder Frank Nunan. The senior Temple-transfer has solidified the Golden Rams outfield defense, and has been a source of production batting ninth. During a recent five-game stretch, Nunan went 10-for-14 (.714), with 5 runs, 5 RBI and 3 steals. His stats thru March 20: started all 21 games (Golden Rams record: 19-2), .328 BA, .414 OBP, 10 runs, 10 RBI, 5 steals. Frank was a First-Team Hometown Philly All-Star in 2006, when he was a sophomore at Temple, and hit .306. (CARDINAL O'HARA)
HT: 5-10    RIGHT-HANDED RELIEVER

Joining West Chester as one of the top teams in the Delaware Valley, past and present, are the Widener Pioneers. Winning 14 of their first 16 games this season, Widener is also positioned to start conference play, as their Commonwealth Conference slate gets underway with a three-game series against Elizabethtown, March 28-29. Putting out the fires this season is freshman Kevin Culbert, who has been unhittable in the early going. Let me re-phrase that, almost unhittable. He has allowed 6 hits against 48 batters faced for an opponent batting average of .125. In his first seven collegiate outings, Kevin sports a 2-0 record, with 4 saves. In 13.2 IP, he has allowed just the 6 hits, no earned runs, 1 walk and 20 strikeouts! In his most recent appearance, Culbert pitched 4 scoreless innings, yielding 2 hits, no walks and 7 K's, as Widener defeated Gwynedd-Mercy, 7-6, in 12 innings. Kevin was a Second-Team All-Catholic selection last season, and pitched 6 innings of shutout ball for O'Hara in a 6-0 win in the second round of last year's playoffs against Archbishop Carroll.

2008 HOMETOWN PHILLY AWARDS
Delaware Valley teams usually travel in February and early March to more baseball-friendly locales. Obviously, most of the destinations are in the south. Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas all host college tournaments and visitors from up north. One of the more popular places to play is Virginia. Ironically the first players honored this season are playing in Virginia.
--------------------------------
Hometown Philly's Top Player, First Month of the Season
TYLER STAMPONE
COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY
(GERMANTOWN ACADEMY)
HT: 6-3      WT: 215        JUNIOR THIRD BASEMAN
JENKINTOWN, PA
Although he is currently at William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, Tyler played his first two seasons of college ball at Holy Cross in frosty Worcester, Massachusetts. Yeah, yeah, it’s pronounced Wooster. Maybe all of the championship fever from New England Nation has had an effect on speech patterns. Like we would refer to West Chester as Wester.
Anyway, Tyler transferred down south, and has been reunited with former Germantown Academy teammates, Pete Vernon and Sean Grieve, both senior lefties for the Tribe. Stampone made his presence felt right away, and in 14 games through March 9, was hitting .396, with a .476 OBP, 13 runs, 6 doubles and 4 steals. More importantly, his new team won their first six games, and posted an 11-3 record with a couple of close Colonial Athletic Association losses to James Madison University, and a 10-2 defeat at the hands of #2 North Carolina. After starting the season batting seventh, Tyler moved to the leadoff spot in game four, and has been there ever since for the College of Bill and Meg.

Hometown Philly's Top Rookie, First Month of the Season
ANTHONY CARDONA
WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
(CHESTNUT HILL ACADEMY)
HT: 5-10      WT: 175        FRESHMAN OUTFIELDER
LOWER GWYNEDD, PA
This rookie has gone country. Leaving the big city, Anthony quickly found a new home at Washington and Lee, in cozy Lexington, Virginia. The CHA grad started his collegiate career off with a bang, going 3-for-6, with 2 runs scored, and a solo home run. Anthony batted ninth in that season opener, but after hitting safely in his next 8 games, moved to the number two spot in the order. For the season, he is batting .426 in 13 games, with 19 runs and 12 RBI. In the field, he has played in left and right field with no miscues. Family and friends should probably not call or text Anthony for a few days, considering he just played 24 innings in a doubleheader this past Sunday. W&L won the first game in 16 innings, and had their nine-game winning streak snapped in the nightcap, dropping their record to 11-3. And now for a rarity on tedsilary.com, here is a history lesson: Washington and Lee is a private, liberal arts university that lies between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains. It certainly is a small school, as its enrollment of 2,200 includes undergrads and law school students, as well. It is the ninth oldest institute of higher learning in the nation. Coincidentally, Tyler Stampone’s William & Mary, is the second oldest school. Of course, you all know which is the oldest. It is revealed at the end of the posting. No flipping!
Honorable Mention:
Kevin Culbert, Widener fr RH (O’Hara) 1-0, 4 saves, 7.2 IP, 0 ER, 11 K
Ryan Kreider, Mercer County CC fr RH (Judge) 3 games, 1 save, 3 IP, 5 K

OK WITH VIRGINIA ALREADY
Player and Rookie of the Month playing in Virginia. Germantown’s Haneef Hill at Virginia State. Neumann's Billy Canady at Norfolk State. But perhaps the biggest splash being made in the Cavalier State is at the University of Virginia, where 25% of the starting position players hail from right here! Phil Gosselin has anchored the left side of the infield, alternating between shortstop and third, while carrying a .371 BA. John Barr has played mainly in left field sporting a .444 BA. On Feb. 28 against Coppin State, John went 2-for-5 with a triple, 3 runs, and 5 RBI. Their contributions have helped the Cavaliers reach a #12 national ranking. UVA won its first 11 games of the season, before dropping a pair of weekend contests against ACC foe NC State.
I KNOW YOU PEEKED
Oldest college? Washington and Lee is the ninth oldest college, Willie and Mary are the second oldest, and the Crimson of Harvard take the honor of the oldest school. What’s with New Englanders and pronunciation, anyway? Must be a real treat to hear them refer to parking their car in Harvard Yard.
