COMING UP ON HOMETOWN PHILLY
The college baseball season has been over for the last few weeks, and congrats once again go out to the Vanderbilt Commodores, the Division I World Series Champions. Germantown Academy’s Chris Harvey, a reserve catcher contributed in the postseason, and parlayed that into a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Junior College Wrap-Up for 2014
Three teams featuring local players made it to the Junior College World Series, and two of those teams came within one win of playing for a national championship.

* In Division-I, Miami Dade College had to sweep a pair of games against mighty Iowa Western to be crowned a national champion. Alas, they came up just shy of that goal, but something great happened along the way. An injury to starting center fielder Jose Gomez thrust Malvern Prep's Nick Bateman into the starting lineup, and all he did was make the All-Tournament Team. What an incredible timeline! Miami-Dade won their second straight game in the tournament, beating Blinn (TX) 11-2. In the second inning, pinch-hitting for the injured Gomez, Nick fell behind 0-2, then went ahead in the count 3-2. He then fouled out five straight pitches, and on the eleventh pitch of the at-bat, smashed a deep fly ball over the Blinn center fielder's head, to the warning track. Maybe that CF had vertigo from the blast, because his relay throw went about 15 yards and rolled to the relay man. Nick sped into high gear and was waved home by his third base coach. The result ... a 2-run pinch-hit inside-the-park home run! Miami-Dade was shut out in the next game 10-0 against Iowa Western, as Nick had one the Sharks' four hits, a triple. One day later, Bateman's heroics continued in an elimination game against Spartanburg Methodist. In the third inning, Nick hit a liner to center. The CF laid out trying to make the catch, but he didn't, and the ball rolled all the way to the warning track. Incredibly, another inside-the-park home run. Bateman was not finished yet, as he slugged a more conventional HR, over the wall, way over the wall, down the LF line in the fifth. Funny sight, the LF took two steps, stopped and watched, as Dade won via the mercy-rule, 13-2.

Needing the sweep against Iowa Western, the dream ended for Miami-Dade, but not before Bateman collected a single, double, and run scored. In the tourney, he batted .583 (7-12), with a double, a triple, three HR and four RBI. WOW! Iowa Western has now three of last five JUCO World Series championships.

* In Division-II, Mercer County Community College lost its opener, 3-2, to Pasco-Hernando State (FL), but staved off elimination with a 5-2 win vs. Vincennes (IN). Joe Santospago (Archbishop Wood), led the way with a solo home run, and two runs scored. The Vikings run ended in their next game, another loss against Pasco-Hernando State. Although they were eliminated, Nate Vahedi (Masterman) and Tommy Cockill (La Salle HS) played in the final game. What a thrill! Mercer finished the season with a 40-8 record.

* In Division-III, Cumberland County College won their first two games, but lost in a memorable game three against eventual champion and host Tyler (TX) College. That game was delayed a few hours by rain, and did not end until after 2 AM, eastern time. Cumberland trailed 6-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth, when they plated three runs. Cumberland added another run in the ninth, as Tyler College was self-imploding, including a error by their first baseman, who dropped a throw from his shortstop! Tyler did prevail, 6-5, sending Cumberland into an elimination game. The Dukes rebounded with a 7-5 win against Herkimer (NY). That set up the championship round with the top-ranked Dukes needing two wins against Tyler. This time, Tyler played error-free ball en route to a 6-3 win, and a national title. Devin McCann (Cardinal O'Hara) hit safely in four of the five tournament games, and ended 2014 with a .314 batting average. Cumberland finished 49-10, shattering the school record for wins in a season.

NCAA Division I Recap through June 5, 2014
Six teams and seven Hometown Philly players entered the NCAA Regionals last weekend, but only three teams advanced to this weekend's best-of-three Super Regionals.

* George Mason, A-10 champions, played two games in the Houston regional, losing to host Rice, and Texas A&M. Mick Foley (Penn Charter) ended his career going 2-for-5, with a walk, RBI, and sac in the NCAA Tournament. Mick hit safely in five of the six postseason games for the Patriots. He also led the team with four triples and 12 sac bunts this season. Ray Toto, jr C (St. Joseph's Prep) went 2-for-6 in the tourney, with a walk and a sac. Ray played in 47 of Mason's 56 games, with 44 starts.

* Florida was the overall #2 national seed, and hosted the Gainesville Regional as the #1-seed, but the Gators became Gator-bait! They were knocked out with losses against the College of Charleston and North Carolina. Charleston was the only #4-Regional seed to advance to the final 16 Super Regional participants. Although jr RHP Keenan Kish (Germantown Academy) is injured, he stayed with the team as a student assistant.

* Bucknell, the Patriot League champs, lost their opener against Virginia in the Charlottesville Regional, then rebounded to beat Liberty in an elimination game. The Bison were sent roaming with a 10-0 loss against Arkansas. Ryan Otis (La Salle HS) is a sophomore reserve outfielder at Bucknell.

* Vanderbilt hosted the Nashville Regional, and will host the Nashville Super Regional with a best-of-three series against Stanford. The Cardinal upset Indiana sweeping a pair of games against the host and top-seed of the Bloomington Regional. Play starts on Friday, June 6 at 1pm on ESPN2. Chris Harvey, jr C (Germantown Academy) batted .302 as the back-up catcher for the Commodores.

* Louisville was a regional host, and swept all three games, beating Kent State, Kansas and Kentucky. The Cardinals will host the Super Regional against Kennesaw State (GA), the #3-seed from the Tallahassee Regional. Kennesaw State advanced and never faced host Florida State, which shockingly lost its first two games, and were ousted. K-State (The Owls) might be an unknown to the public, but most baseball insiders said be aware of them (Max Pentecost, catcher, taken 11th overall by Toronto in the MLB draft). They advanced by beating Alabama THREE times. Series gets underway Friday, June 6, 6:30pm on ESPNU. Louisville's Danny Rosenbaum, soph 1B/3B (Springside Chestnut Hill Academy/Plymouth-Whitemarsh) was the American Conference Player of the week on April 28, and hit .306 in 50 games this season.

* Maryland was an at-large selection from the ACC. The Terps move on, after sweeping all three games of the Columbia Regional, and beating host and top-seed South Carolina twice. Andrew Amaro, jr IF/OF (Penn Charter) has appeared in 105 games in his career with the Terps, but is basically being used as a pinch-runner at this point in the season. Maryland faces off with conference rival Virginia in the Charlottesville Super Regional, which starts Satruday, June 7 at noon on ESPN2.

Recent Home Runs:

Nick Bateman (2, 3, 4), Miami Dade soph OF (Malvern Prep) Inside-the-park HR on an 11-pitch at-bat, 11-2 win vs Blinn (TX), Junior College World Series, May 27 ... 2 HR, including another inside-the-park HR, 13-2 win vs Spartanburg Methodist, May 29, sending Miami-Dade into the JUCO national title round, May 29

* Florida was the overall #2 national seed, and will host the Gainesville Regional as the #1-seed. The Gators battle #4-seed College of Charleston (41-17, CAA champs) on Friday at 7pm. Although jr RHP Keenan Kish (Germantown Academy) is injured, he is with the team as a student assistant. Other game pits North Carolina vs Long Beach State.

* Bucknell won the Patriot League Championship and their present is to play the #3 national seed Virginia in the Charlottesville Regional, Friday at 2pm. Ryan Otis (La Salle HS) is a sophomore reserve outfielder for the Bison. Other matchup: Liberty vs Arkansas.

* Maryland had to sit and sweat it out, until they were among the final 16 teams to be announced in the tournament. This will be Maryland's first NCAA Tournament appearance in 43 years. The Terps got that at-large berth, giving the ACC seven teams in the tourney. Maryland, the #2-seed faces #3-seed Old Dominion (Conference USA), Friday at 1pm. The other game in the Columbia Regional is South Carolina vs Campbell. Andrew Amaro, jr IF/OF (Penn Charter) has appeared in 104 games in his career with the Terps, and is the son of Jennifer and David Amaro, and the nephew of Ruben Amaro, Jr. Brother, Rob Amaro, led the Temple Owls in batting (.324 avg) in their final season in program history.

Left out, season over:
* Seton Hall (39-15), lost in Big East Championship to Xavier. Joe Poduslenko, fr IF (Malvern Prep) batted .333 in 19 games.

* Duke (33-25), shutout eventual champ Georgia Tech, 6-0, in the ACC Tournament, but lost to Miami in 12 innings, falling one game shy of the title game. Kenny Koplove, soph SS (Penn Charter) played in 56 of the Blue Devils' 58 games (55 starts).

Division II Recap through May 25, 2014
None of the eight teams playing in the Division II World Series were from the Philadelphia area. It was just two seasons ago when the West Chester Golden Rams won their first-ever D-II World Series championship, with contributions from Conor Kerins (Monsignor Bonner) and Matt McAllister (Archbishop Wood).

Division III Recap through May 26, 2014
None of the eight teams playing in the Division III World Series were from the Philadelphia area. Last champion of local interest was Kean in 2007. Johns Hopkins was a runner-up in 2008, with Chez Angeloni (La Salle HS), named as the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament. Last season's champion, Linfield (OR), has already been eliminated in the 2014 World Series. They are managed by Scott Brosius, the 1998 World Series MVP with the New York Yankees.

GREG BROOKS

GWYNEDD-MERCY JR 3B (ST. JOSEPH'S PREP)

HT: 5-6.....WT: 175.....VOORHEES, NJ

It wasn't for lack of effort that the Gwynedd-Mercy Griffins did not reach the NCAA Tournament. Greg Brooks certainly did his part with a monster week in the CSAC postseason Tournament. The junior pounded out 10 hits in 11 at-bats (.909 BA), in the first three games of the CSAC Tourney, leading to the championship series against mighty Keystone College. The Griffins were eliminated with a 7-1 loss, but Coach Paul Murphy certainly has something to build on for 2015. Brooks, also known as "Buddy" and the son of former SJ Prep football coach Gil Brooks, amazingly raised his season batting average from .224 to an even .300 in his final four games. He has always been an on-base machine in his career with a three-season OBP of .430.

Honorable Mention:
* Robert Amaro, Temple sr 1B/3B (Penn Charter) 3 GP vs #5 Louisville: .545 BA (6-11), 2 R, 2 SB (leads Owls with .333 BA, .409 OBP)

* Joey Ravert, La Salle U soph 1B/RHP (Malvern Prep) 3 GP, .333 BA (4-12), .467 OBP, 2 triples (season: 6 multi-RBI games)

JONATHAN MOTTS

LACKAWANNA COLLEGE SOPH LHP (LANSDALE CATHOLIC)

HT: 6-1.....WT: 195.....LANSDALE, PA

Lackawanna College's bid to reach the Junior College Northeast District Championship came up just one win short this season. After defeating a powerful Mercer County squad in the first game of the Region 19 championship series, Lackawanna fell in the title game to Mercer, whose record currently stands at 37-6. On the way to the Region 19 final, the Lackawanna Falcons survived with an 11-5 win against the County College of Morris. In that game, Jonathan Motts got the start, and earned the win with seven innings of work, to help the Falcons stave off elimination and advance to the final series. Motts ended the season with a 5-1 record, leading the staff in victories, and has a stellar career record of 13-2.

Honorable Mention:
* Jamey Minnemeyer
, Gwynedd-Mercy jr RHP (Lansdale Catholic) Earned the win in CSAC Tourney opener (season: 5-1, 47 K in 52 IP)

* Shawn O'Neill, La Salle U sr LHP (La Salle HS) 5th save of season, perfect 9th inn. vs Dayton, May 9 (win/save in 9 of La Salle's last 11 wins)

PAT VANDERSLICE

TEMPLE RHP (BONNER-PRENDIE)
HT: 6-5.....WT: 250.....LANSDOWNE, PA

Most baseball players remember their first hit, or first win, or first save, in the pros, in college, in high school, and maybe all the way back to T-Ball! But Pat Vanderslice's first collegiate win was extra special. Not just because this is the end of the line for Temple baseball (disgusted ... Neil Theobald, shame on you!!!!). How about getting your first "W" against the #5 team in the country, Louisville? Yeah, the Louisville Cardinals came into last Saturday's game with a 39-11 record, and a great chance at hosting an NCAA Regional in the upcoming Division I championships. Pat went out and sliced and diced the Cardinals, pitching five innings, and limiting a potent offense to just four hits and two runs in the 4-2 win. Four innings of scoreless relief from Zach Batchelor (Monroe Township, NJ) and Patrick Krall (Downingtown, PA) sealed the deal. Best wishes to all of the players, coaches and support staff going forward.

Honorable Mention:

* Scott Boches, Marist RHP (Archbishop Wood) Complete game win vs Saint Peter's, May 10 (Leads team with 4 wins and 2 complete games)

* Joe Santospago, Mercer County CC OF (Archbishop Wood) 4 GP in Region 19 Tournament: .286 BA (4-14), 4 R, 2 SB (season: .413 BA)

* Joe Poduslenko, Seton Hall IF (Malvern Prep) Ninth inning pinch-hit single & game-tying run scored in 3-2 win vs Xavier (12 inn.), May 10

* Frank Saviski, Gwynedd-Mercy SS (Bonner-Prendie) 4 GP in CSAC Tourney: .313 BA (5-16), .421 OBP (Led team with 46 hits, 11 doubles)

This Week's Coaching Spotlight
RYAN WHEELER - Temple Owls

* 3rd season as Temple head coach ... 50 career wins with Owls, 22 conference wins ... Previously coached at Richmond, Penn, William and Mary ... Penn State graduate ... Selected in 1994 MLB draft by California Angels in 31st round ... Assistant coach Brian Pugh was a head coach at Arcadia, and assistant at Wesley, Cumberland County College, Richard Stockton and Wilmington ... Assistant coach Kevin Small played and coached professionally in Australia and Switzerland.
As everybody in the Philly area knows all too well, Temple is playing its last season of baseball. As of July 1, the program will be eliminated after 87 seasons. Although the crew and rowing teams were reinstated after new funds became available, that was not the case for baseball. As the Temple News' Jeff Neiberg eloquently stated, "The administration didn't consult with members of the baseball team before making the cuts. It didn't ask coach Ryan Wheeler about how to permanently solve facilities issues. It didn't consult with players about frustrations in the 22-minute ride to Ambler campus and whether it affected their well-being as student-athletes. It didn't talk to former coach James "Skip" Wilson, who helped build the program to become the most decorated among Philadelphia schools."

Oh, and by the way, Temple defeated the fifth-ranked team in the nation, the Louisville Cardinals, last Saturday. Though it is the end, Temple provided tons of memories and great players throughout the years!

Home Run Last Week:

MICHAEL RIVERSO

WIDENER SR 1B (NEUMANN-GORETTI)

HT: 6-1.....Major: Finance.....PHILADELPHIA, PA

He has accomplished just about everything in his collegiate career, but there is still some unfinished business ahead for Michael Riverso and the Widener Pride. Named as the Commonwealth Conference Player of the Year, and sporting a league-best .429 batting average, Riverso came up big one more time for the Pride, as they captured the conference championship and the right to play in the NCAA Regionals, starting May 14. In the title game against Alvernia with the score tied 2-2, Michael came up to the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth. His walk-off, game-winning infield single sent the Pride into celebration mode. He went 5-for-11 in the playoffs with a .571 OBP, and was named as the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Brackets will be announced for the NCAA Regionals on Monday, May 12.

Honorable Mention:

JAMEY MINNEMEYER

GWYNEDD-MERCY JR RHP (LANSDALE CATHOLIC)

HT: 6-3.....WT: 190.....LANSDALE, PA

Gwynedd-Mercy goes into this week's double-elimination CSAC Playoffs as the #2-seed, and boast a trio of quality starting pitchers: two juniors from South Jersey's St. Augustine Prep (Matt Rakus and Rick Elfreth), and Lansdale Catholic's Jamey Minnemeyer. Last Monday, Minnemeyer was at his best, tossing a complete-game shutout in a 4-0 win at Marywood University. In Jamey's nine-inning effort, and second career CG shutout, he whiffed a season-high eleven batters. Minnemeyer minimized Marywood hitters to just three hits, a walk, and a hit batter. For the season, he is 4-1 with a 3.23 ERA. Jamey was honored as the CSAC Pitcher of the Week.

NICK DONOVAN

WIDENER RHP (CARDINAL O'HARA)
HT: 5-11.....Major: Business Management.....ASTON, PA

It looks like good times ahead for Widener Head Coach Mike LaRosa and reliever Nick Donovan. On their way to capturing the Commonwealth Conference Championship, and automatic spot in the NCAA Regionals, the Pride relied on their pitching. In their three wins, Widener only went to the bullpen once, and it was the freshman Nick Donovan, who got the call. Entering a pressure-packed situation against Messiah, Nick prevailed. With one on and one out in the ninth inning, the tying run came to the plate. But Nick got two outs on one pitch, inducing a double play, and sending his team to the title game (see Michael Riverso above). Nick notched his team-leading third save of the season.

Honorable Mention:

* Mike Fitzgerald, Northeastern RHP (Germantown Academy) 3 APP, 1-0, 5.1 IP, 1 ER (last 7 APP: 2-0, 1 save, 15.1 IP, 1 ER, 0.59 ERA)

* Scott Boches, Marist RHP (Archbishop Wood) First complete-game in 2-1 loss at Niagara, May 3: 8 IP, 5 H, 2 R (2nd on team with 3 wins)

Haverford, winners of two of the last three Centennial crowns, will play in the NCAA Regionals starting May 14. After losing tournament opener, Fords won four straight elimination games to capture the automatic NCAA bid. One of the wins came on a walk-off bunt single, and the title game was decided in the 12th inning on another walk-off single. Teams have competed in six of the last eight conference championship games ... Played third base and was captain at Johns Hopkins ('96 grad, '98 Master's degree) ... Hometown Philly Player of the Week for week ending April 20, 2014
ALBERT BAUR

NEWBERRY JR 1B/3B (NEUMANN-GORETTI)

HT: 6-4.....WT: 220.....PHILADELPHIA, PA

It's party time in South Philly!!! At least, that's what supporters of the Neumann-Goretti baseball family are hoping for in early June. All Saints fans are eager to hear Albert Baur's name selected during the MLB draft. It was just two years ago when N-G first baseman Mark Donato's name was called in the 26th round by the Kansas City Royals. But first things first. Baur has been ripping it up this season for the Newberry Wolves, based in South Carolina. In five games last week, Albert batted .458 (11-24), with five RBI, four runs scored and four doubles. By hitting in each game last week, Baur extended his hitting streak to 15 games, batting .409 during that span. He is among the top 25 in the nation with 68 hits and 16 doubles. Not only hearing Baur's name during the draft, how wild would it be if Neumann-Goretti senior 1B Josh Ockimey also hears his name called. Josh is committed to Indiana U in the fall.

MATT PETRIZZI

WEST CHESTER JR RHP/SS (CONWELL-EGAN)

HT: 6-1.....WT: 175.....LEVITTOWN, PA

Is there anything Matt Petrizzi can't do on a baseball diamond? While spending his first two years matriculating at Harford Community College, near Baltimore, Matt did it all, playing shortstop and pitching in 25 games, compiling an ERA of 1.98, which included a pair of no-hitters. Making the move to D-II hasn't slowed him down one bit. He is firmly entrenched as the number three hitter in the batting lineup, and has made 32 starts at shortstop and another five as a pitcher. Matt took the mound twice last week, winning both starts against conference rivals East Stroudsburg and Shippensburg, improving his season record to 3-0, and career record to 10-4. The Golden Rams battle Millersville this weekend, and then head to the PSAC Tournament in Butler, PA, starting on April 30th.

MICHAEL RIVERSO

WIDENER SR 1B (NEUMANN-GORETTI)
HT: 6-1.....MAJOR: FINANCE.....PHILADELPHIA, PA

One of the major reasons Widener went on a 10-game win streak recently was the senior leadership of Mike Riverso. A model of consistency throughout his career, Riverso batted .533 in five games last week, including a pair of three-hit games. He was an on-base machine, garnering six walks and three HBP for an OBP of .708 during that stretch. By the way, he's been plunked 30 times in his Pride career. Widener has once again qualified for the Commonwealth Conference Tournament.

JONATHAN MOTTS

LACKAWANNA COLLEGE SOPH LHP (LANSDALE CATHOLIC)

HT: 6-1.....WT: 195.....LANSDALE, PA

With all of the weather cancellations this baseball season, it's been difficult for teams and players to get into a groove. But with the oncoming spring clearing, many teams have been making games up. The Falcons played six times last week, and Jonathan Motts was the starting pitcher twice, earning a pair of wins. He had only appeared in three of Lackawanna's first 15 games. On April 9, Motts hurled a four-hit complete game shutout against County College of Morris. Just four days later, he allowed two runs over five innings in a win against Sussex County CC. Motts now has seven career complete games and three shutouts in his two seasons at Lackawanna.

MIKE FITZGERALD

NORTHEASTERN RHP (GERMANTOWN ACADEMY)
HT: 5-10.....WT: 185.....HOLLAND, PA

Wow! Talk about perseverance. That's Mike Fitzgerald. While most players take for granted their ability to throw a baseball, Mike cherishes his time on the mound for the Northeastern Huskies. It was an uphill battle just to make the 2013 squad after battling back from Tommy John surgery. He did make that opening day roster a season ago, but in his fifth game suffered a torn labrum that pretty much ended his season. After successful shoulder surgery in May 2013, and rehab throughout the summer and fall, there he was again on the opening day roster, this time as a redshirt freshman. In two games last week, Mike pitched three scoreless innings vs UConn, then earned the win with two shutout relief innings vs Towson. Season stats: 2-2, 3.18 ERA in 9 appearances

Honorable Mention:

* John LaMotta, Marymount (VA) RHP (Neumann-Goretti) First collegiate win: 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K vs Penn State Harrisburg, April 11

JOE FORCELLINI

CENTENARY JR SS/LF (La SALLE HS)
HT: 6-2.....WT: 210.....HATFIELD, PA

Only in his junior season, Joe Forcellini is already entering the top five in many career offensive categories at Centenary. Of course, coming off of a monster week doesn't hurt. Last week in five games, Joe pounded opposing pitchers, batting .667 (12-18), with 11 runs scored and four extra base hits. During that stretch he improved his batting average from .379 to .447. Joe was also unnerving opposing catchers, stealing eight bases in nine attempts. His current career batting average of .398 is second in school history, and his .473 OBP is fourth.

SHAWN O'NEILL

La SALLE U SR LHP (La SALLE HS)

HT: 6-2.....WT: 195.....PHILADELPHIA, PA

Shawn O'Neill's collegiate career is winding down, and the lefty is going out with a bang. Last week, he made three appearances, two in relief and one as a starter. Shawn recorded two wins and a save, pitching a total of nine innings, yielding two runs on six hits during that span. After a rough start to the 2014 season (0-5, 5.64 ERA), O'Neill has rebounded nicely, posting a 1.13 ERA in his last five outings, with three wins and two saves. For his efforts, Shawn was also named as the Atlantic 10 and Big 5 Co-Pitcher of the Week.

BEN LIPPINCOTT

DELAWARE VALLEY COLLEGE RHP (LANSDALE CATHOLIC)
HT: 5-5.....WT: 190.....PERKASIE, PA

Delaware Valley Head Coach Bob Altieri found himself in a pickle last weekend. His game two starter against Eastern had already allowed six runs in the first inning, and the Aggies needed some relief immediately. Ben Lippincott, who was a versatile all-everything player at Lansdale Catholic, entered the game with two on and one out. He recorded a strikeout and fly out to end the inning. His teammates promptly put up a five-spot in the second inning to take the lead for good. Lippincott would go on to finish the game, hurling 6.2 innings, allowing just one run on two hits, while fanning seven, and improving his season record to 2-0.

ERIC FRAIN
BLOOMSBURG JR 3B (ARCHBISHOP RYAN)
HT: 5-11.....WT: 165.....PHILADELPHIA, PA
Although the Hometown Philly baseball schedule was severely hampered by awful weather last week, there are still plenty of stories about the local guys to tell. First up is Archbishop Ryan's Eric Frain, who went 4-for-6 in two games, with five runs scored and a double. His batting average increased to .342 for the season. In 2013, Eric was the starting second baseman for the Gloucester County College Roadrunners, who went on to capture a national junior college championship. Upon his transfer to Bloomsburg, Frain immediately went to the leadoff spot, and has not stopped hitting since. He started 2014 with a nine-game hit streak, went hitless in his tenth game, then had a hit in each of his next ten games. Eric was also named the PSAC Player of the Week.
Honorable Mention:

Nate pitched two perfect innings in the 11-5 win. Mercer started the season with a 19-2 record.

NATE CORONADO
CAMDEN COUNTY COLLEGE SOPH SS (EDISON)
HT: 6-3.....WT: 210.....PHILADELPHIA, PA
It should be fun tracking Nate Coronado's junior season, at the next level, in 2015. It is obvious that he has mastered the junior college ranks, batting .404 as a freshman in 2013, and off to a great start in this snow-challenged season. Last week, Coronado collected eight hits, and seven were for extra bases. On the season, he is batting .440 (22-50). An amazing 15 of his 22 hits have NOT been singles (8 doubles, 4 triples, 3 HR). The 2011 Daily News Player of the Year from Edison HS has 19 runs and 19 RBI in his first 15 games this season.

DOM RAIA
CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE JR RHP (GAMP)
HT: 6-0.....WT: 190.....SPRINGFIELD, PA
March 22 turned out to be a milestone day for the Chestnut Hill College baseball program, now in its seventh season. Dom Raia was the winning pitcher in game one of a doubleheader vs Concordia. With his 12th career victory, Dom passed Bobby Hopkins (North Catholic) as the Griffins' all-time wins leader. In addition, it was the 100th win in program history. Raia went 7.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs, while striking out nine. The former-GAMP star under Art Kratchman, has not allowed an earned run in his last two starts: 14.2 IP, 8 H, 0 ER, 21 K

FRANK SAVISKI
GWYNEDD-MERCY SS (BONNER-PRENDIE)
HT: 6-3.....WT: 225.....ASTON, PA
Shortstop is such a crucial position, but Gwynedd-Mercy Head Coach Paul Murphy feels very at ease with freshman Frank Saviski taking over. He is the only G-M freshman to start every game this season, and is batting a lofty .400 (20-50), second on the team. Last week, he played five games, batting .444 (8-18), and extending his hit streak to seven games (.500, 13-26).

As March Madness takes over, let's look back at some of the top college baseball performers over the last two weeks. By the way, the crew at Hometown Philly filled out their hoops bracket. Last season, teams involved in Hometown Philly Baseball were given priority when filling out the bracket. Guess what? That bracket won its group, thanks to Louisville on the court, and Ty Young (Malvern Prep) on the diamond for the Cardinals. Goin' for two in a row ... and yes, #15 Wofford was picked to upset Michigan, thanks to Demetrius Jennings.
