CLASS A FIRST ROUND
At Radnor High
  Delco Christian 5, GAMP 0:
The Pioneers fanned eight times in the first three innings, and 12 times overall, and their four hits came in separate innings. Eric Funaro and Brandon Henson laced doubles. Anthony Venafro's 400-foot blast to dead center was caught, ending the game.
CLASS AAA FIRST ROUND
At Northwestern Lehigh HS
Bethlehem Catholic 15, Franklin Towne 0: FT sent just 10 men to the plate in this three-inning game. Seven fanned and the only guy to reach base, via a walk, was Ron Gunning. This result completed an 0-4 year for the Pub in state playoffs with a scoring disadvantage of 42-0.

JUNE 4
PIAA STATE PLAYOFF
CLASS AAAA FIRST ROUND
At La Salle University
West Chester East 14, Frankford 0:
The Pioneers surrendered 12 runs and 13 hits in the first two innings, but at least were able to avoid a three-inning termination in their final game under 19-year coach Bob Peffle. Esteban "Shortie" Meletiche, Edwin "Tito" Rohena and Jon Bracero had singles and Peffle afterward autographed a keepsake baseball for veteran ump Jim Scott.
CLASS AA FIRST ROUND
At La Salle Uuniversity
Pine Grove 8, Prep Charter 0:
In the second game of a doubleheader, the Huskies were likewise limited to three singles (by Josh DeSimone, Mike Zangari and Sam Shipley).

MAY 30
CATHOLIC LEAGUE FINAL
(At Widener University)
   SJ Prep 19, Ryan 0:
For the second time in six years (Carroll beat La Salle, 16-0, in 2002), the CL final was outrageously one-sided as the Hawks frolicked to their first championship in the league's 63-season "modern" baseball history; there'd also been a title in 1925. The Prep scored four unearned runs in the first, then exploded for 13 more (all earned) in the second thanks to eight hits (three doubles), five walks and two hit batsmen. Seventeen batters went to the plate. Fittingly, the only two seniors in the starting lineup emerged as headliners. In a game halted by a 10-run mercy rule, Matt Dolan pitched a five-inning one-hitter (Rob McArdle's infield single to lead off the third) and Matt Fischer went 2-for-2 with a walk, double and four RBI. Tim Edger, Steve Bruno and Dennis Murphy added three RBI apiece.

MAY 29
PUBLIC LEAGUE FINAL
(At Campbell's Field, Camden)
  Frankford 7, Central 5:
Senior first baseman Kevin Roche, who made only one plate appearance during the 2006 season (he walked), went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI out of the cleanup spot as the Pioneers assured that coach Bob Peffle would head into retirement with one last title. It was his fifth in eight years, in fact, and Frankford raised its record vs. Pub opposition during the last six seasons, counting playoffs, to 100-7. In his 19 years, Peffle went 235-76 (.756) against Pub opposition with marks of 197-62 (regular season) and 38-14 (playoffs). Esteban "Shortie" Meletiche smacked an RBI double and went the distance, fanning 10. Edwin "Tito" Rohena and Frank Donato (RBI double) halved four hits and as many runs. Losing pitcher Jared Farbman went 2-for-3 and his sac fly drew Central within 7-5 in a two-run seventh. With the tying run on base, Roche caught a foul popup to end the game just before he fell part way down the steps in Central's dugout. He was unhurt.

MAY 26
CATHOLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINALS
(Doubleheader at Widener University)
  SJ Prep 6, North 1:
Soph righthander Kyle Mullen nearly became the fifth pitcher in CL semis history to notch a complete game while yielding no hits or one hit. But in the seventh, he walked three and plunked Derrek Etsell to force in a run and classmate Kevin Gillen was summoned to retire the  final batter. Chris Morrin had North's lone hit, a fifth-inning single. Mullen fanned nine. Tim Edger (triple and single for one RBI apiece) and Steve Bruno (2-for-3, RBI) led Prep's offense.
Ryan 11, O'Hara 3: Kevin McGovern, who'd personally scouted the big-hitting Lions three days earlier, pitched a six-hitter. Each hit came in a different inning; three came with two away. Nick Ferdinand went 2-for-3 with a walk, triple and three RBI. Help came from Rob McArdle (3-for-4, two-run single), Andrew Lacovara (3-for-4, two runs scored) and Mike Kovacs (two-run single). Ryan scored in all six of its at-bats. For O'Hara, which used five pitchers, Marco Menna doubled and tripled.

MAY 24
PUBLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINALS
(Doubleheader at Richie Ashburn Field)
  Frankford 10, GAMP 8:
Bad mushroomed into worse very early for Frankford as rightfielder Jose Burgos suffered a dislocated right shoulder diving for Brandon Henson's game-opening triple and GAMP went on to explode for eight runs; Henson capped the inning with a three-run homer. After scoring two runs in the second on a dropped popup, Frankford posted its own eight-spot in the fourth as hits by Jon Bracero (double) and Kevin Roche (single) chased home two runs apiece; Roche had started the frame with a double. Esteban "Shortie" Meletiche allowed seven hits (none after the leadoff batter of the second inning) in going the distance.
Central 2, Northeast 1 (8 inn.): In a battle of senior righthanders, Jared Farbman (four-hitter, 12 strikeouts) fared a shade better than Joe Breitweiser (seven, eight). Jim Benek drove in a run in the fourth and scored the winner in the home eighth. He singled to left, moved up on Mike Braun's sacrifice and came around on Micah Winterstein's drive over the rightfielder's head. Northeast soph Tim Freiling went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

MAY 23
CATHOLIC LEAGUE PLAYOFFS
SECOND ROUND
  At Widener
  North 10, Judge 9 (8 inn.):
The Falcons overcame deficits of 4-0 early and then 8-7 and 9-8 in the last two innings to jolt their arch-rival and earn a semifinal berth for the first time since 1995. Frosh Ryan Etsell extended the game in the seventh by scoring his senior brother, Derrek (single), with a double; Judge DH Joe Ashdale (five RBI) had provided an 8-7 lead in the top half with a grand slam over the Blue Monster in left-center. Bob Zanneo singled home a run in the eighth, then North got two on an error and Chris James' RBI single. Each Etsell went 2-for-3 with a double and Chris Morrin collected two RBI. Kegan Smith won in relief.
  At Phila. Univ.
O'Hara 6, Carroll 0: Kevin Culbert pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts and, with Chris Dengler (double) on third base in the seventh, he was able to preserve his shutout by inducing a popup caught behind the mound by third baseman Marco Menna. Steve Juliano laced a two-run single while Jon Yuravage lofted a pair of sacrifice flies. Pat Young (two hits) and Greg D'Alonzo (two runs scored) also were factors.

MAY 22
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
FIRST ROUND
  At Widener
  Judge 14, La Salle 7:
In a game featuring 38 negative stats -- 10 errors, 10 unearned runs, 11 walks, seven hit batsmen -- Tim Ashenbrenner was a breath of fresh air. The Crusaders' third pitcher went the final five innings and allowed just one run on one hit, Mike Martinelli's RBI double. Jim DiLisio lofted two sacrifice flies while Andrew McHale (double) and Joe Ashdale (single) lashed hits worth two RBI. The highlight for La Salle, which owned a 6-2 lead after two innings, was Sean Saverio's two-run triple.
  At Phila. Univ.
Carroll 6, Bonner 4: Down 1-2 in the count, John Thomas lined a two-run double to center in the top of the seventh to give the Patriots their third postseason win. Though he did not receive credit for the win, Andrew Candelore was a first-magnitude star thanks to his 5.2 innings of one-run (unearned) relief after the starter failed to retire any of the first five batters. Chris Lisowski posted a two-run single in the first and Chris Dengler, the No. 3 hitter, created a 4-4 tie in the fifth with a squeeze bunt. Bonner, the third consecutive Carroll opponent to do so, collected just two hits.
