PIAA tourney brackets: Class A - Class AA - Class AAA - Class AAAA.
JUNE 6
PIAA STATE PLAYOFFS
CLASS AAAA FIRST ROUND
(At Ashburn Field)
Council Rock South 8, Bonner 3
The Friars fell into an 8-0 hole before posting three in the fifth on
Jamie Juisti's RBI single and Jim Haley's two-run double. Matt Dolan started for
Bonner.
(At Neumann University)
Conestoga 10, Frankford 3
The Pioneers managed six hits against and trailed by 9-1 after three
innings. Losing pitcher Hector Cerda went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.
CLASS AAA FIRST ROUND
(At Ashburn Field)
Twin Valley 3, Neumann-Goretti 1
Only one of this game's runs was earned and it went to TV. John
Snyder singled twice and scored for N-G, which fell for the first time in 23
games, while Joey Gorman allowed seven hits (all singles) and three walks while
striking out nine. The Saints advanced runners to second and third in the home
seventh. A strikeout ended it.
(At Northern York High)
Mechanicsburg 10, Franklin Towne 0 (5 inn.)
The Coyotes were held to four hits and surrendered two runs per
inning. In the first, Tyler Landis singled and Towne appeared poised to claim a
1-0 lead. Alas, the baserunner fell rounding third and was erased in a rundown.
Damian Padilla and Aron Litostanski did the pitching for Towne.
CLASS AA FIRST ROUND
(At Muhlenberg High)
Oley Valley 10, Esperanza 1
The Toros were limited to three hits. Two came in the fourth inning
as Felix Torraca-Dedos singled and later came around on Aderly Perez' single.
Giovanni Victoria made the start for Esperanza.
CLASS A FIRST ROUND
(At Muhlenberg High)
Reading Central Catholic 3, Masterman 2
In the only night game, the Blue Dragons were sent home by a two-out
walkoff double that completed an 0-6 day for District 12 teams. With senior
righthander David Ashbridge not quite feeling 100 percent, coach Alex Dejewski
went with junior righty Nate Vahedi. He lasted the 6.2-innings distance,
allowing eight hits and two walks while striking out 11. The Blue Dragons scored
two runs in the fourth as Augie Legido walked, Harry Taggart tripled and Vahedi
hit into an error, allowing Taggart to check in. Though Jack Christmas followed
with a double, the uprising fizzled.
JUNE 3
CLASS AAAA CITY TITLE
Bonner 7, Frankford 2
(At Ashburn Field)
Jamie Juisti went 3-for-4 with a run-scoring triple (Joe Haley also
had one) and Marty McKeone allowed one hit over the final six innings after
Frankford reached him for three, including an RBI double by losing pitcher
Brandon Gonzalez, in the first frame. Jim Haley, Joe's brother, had a two-run
single and Joe received credit for an RBI after Juisti raced home in the
aftermath of an uncaught infield fly that landed 10 feet from the plate.
JUNE 2
PUBLIC LEAGUE FINAL
Frankford 5, Edison 4
(At Ashburn Field)
After a one-day delay due to excessive heat/humidity, announced just
one hour prior to gametime, Frankford received a route-going performance from
Omar Cruz and a three-hit, two-RBI outing from Hector Cerda while becoming the
Public League's first all-Hispanic champion. Actually, every player on both
teams was Hispanic. Cruz delivered an RBI single in the fifth, giving himself a
5-1 lead, and that became the decisive hit; Edison scored one in the sixth (two
hits) and two in the seventh (four hits) before a strikeout/throw-to-first combo
ended it. The Owls ran themselves out of the sixth and a taylor-made doubleplay
ball removed major starch in the seventh. Major winds blowing straight in from
left and left-center almost certainly cost losing pitcher Nate Coronado what
would have been a pair of three-run homers; there'd been not even a hint of wind
the day before. There were 12 errors and only three earned runs. In its 55th
season of baseball, Edison owned an 0-19 record in quarterfinals and an 0-4 mark
in semis (from an era when only four teams made the playoffs). Its squad
included two over-aged players, who were granted eligibility by a District 12
committee in a move that sparked major anger among the coaches of the league's
other top programs.
CLASS AAA CITY TITLE
Neumann-Goretti 6, Franklin Towne 1
(At Neumann-Goretti)
Josh Ockimey delivered a two-run single, Joey Gorman, Nicky Nardini
and Joey Glennon stroked two hits apiece and four of N-G's
five pitchers posted shutout performances. Ockimey's hit came
in the third inning, and extended a 1-0 lead. The Saints did all of their
scoring in the first five frames. Joe Kinee fanned five in the
first two innings. Per scoring rules, however, the win went to Joe Jaep, who
also pitched shutout ball in the third and fourth. Angel Lazu
singled home FT's fifth-inning run and Markus Malave had two
hits.
CLASS AA 1-12 SUBREGIONAL FINAL
Springfield Montco 11, Esperanza 1 (5 inn.)
(At Ashburn Field)
Jake Yannessa pitched a one-hitter (Jovanny
Zavala's triple with one away in the fifth) with six strikeouts and laced a
triple en route to two RBI. Jeff Escolatico's second inning sacrifice fly
accounted for Esperanza's run.
MAY 31
CATHOLIC LEAGUE FINAL
Neumann-Goretti 3, Bonner 1 (8 inn.)
(At Widener University)
In the visiting eighth, after twice fouling off bunt attempts, junior
lefthander Joey Gorman nixed coach Lou Spadaccini's suggestion to hit away,
sacrificed John Snyder (double off the Blue Monster) and Mike "Zoom" Zolk
(intentional walk) to third and second, then watched Marty Venafro and Jimmy
Kerrigan deliver RBI singles. A 1-2-3 bottom half gave the Saints their second
title in three years and Gorman win No. 3 of the playoffs over seven days (two
as a starter; 15 total innings). Gorman, the junior class president, allowed
four hits in this one and retired 13 of the final 14 batters. N-G's Joey Glennon
(single in second) and Bonner's Paul Shepherd (groundout in first; also gunned
down three would-be basestealers) had the game's other RBI. The weather
conditions featured oppressive heat and humidity with not a hint of a breeze.
After being pelted by a bucket of ice at extremely close range, Spadaccini
hollered while laughing, "Geez! You almost gave me a concussion."
PUBLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINALS
(Doubleheader at Ashburn Field)
Frankford 9, Central 3
Lefty Hector Cerda took a shutout into the seventh, then needed
last-out assistance from Brandon Gonzalez as the Pioneers earned a title-game
visit for the eighth time in nine years. Central committed six errors and only
three of Frankford's runs were earned. Soph Kevin Montero went 2-for-4 with a
triple and two RBI. Ricky Alvarez (three) and Cerda (two) stole multiple bases.
Central's seventh inning rally included RBI hits by Mike Cavallaro (triple) and
Pete Rowe (double).
Edison 15, Washington 8
Nate Coronado went 3-for-4 with a double, two homers (both over the
leftfield fence) and four RBI as the Owls (nee Inventors) advanced to a final
for the first time in the program's 55-year history. His brother, Nelson,
pitched two perfect relief innings and fanned all six batters. Starter Johnny
Pagan struck out seven in four frames. Edison's first three batters, Joshua
Fontanez and the Coronados, combined for eight hits and 10 runs scored. For
Washington, Dean Grande went 3-for-4 and his two-run single created a 6-6 tie in
the fourth.
CLASS AA SUB-REGIONAL
Springfield Montco 5, Conwell-Egan 1
At Glen Mills, Matt Brach doubled and C-E scored a first inning run.
This result means C-E and Esperanza will not play for the City Title.
MAY 28
PENNSYLVANIA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS TOURNEY FINAL
Haverford School 8, Hill School 5: Scheduling woes in the other half
of the bracket delayed the start until 10 p.m., and the game didn't end until
12:45 a.m. Matt Galetta went six innings and Eric Close earned the save. One of
Haverford's three hits was Scott Safford's three-run triple. He finished with
four RBI.
PENNSYLVANIA INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS TOURNEY SEMIFINAL
Haverford School 13, Malvern 4: Ryan Blake pitched a four-hitter and
doubled while halving six RBI with Mike Washington. Vince Rondolone turned three
hits into two RBI.
CATHOLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINALS
(At La Salle High)
Bonner 5, Wood 4 (11 inn.): Seventh-inning RBI singles by Joe Haley
(one out) and Ronnie Scull (two out) enabled the Friars to force extra innings,
then Jim Murphy took a first-pitch curve on his left knee to end it with one
away in the 11th. Scull pitched shutout ball over 4.2 innings and contributed
two significant defensive gems; his diving catch of a popped-up bunt resulted in
a doubleplay, and he tagged out a runner near third after the screaming Friars
duped the guy into thinking a non-existent pickoff throw had sailed into
centerfield. Wood's highlight was Jeff Courter's two-run double.
(At Widener)
Neumann-Goretti 18, La Salle 13: In an all-time crazy contest, La
Salle scored the first 11 runs in the initial two innings and N-G, the home
team, scored the
last 15 in its final two at-bats. The Saints were one out away from being
10-runned, at 13-3, in the fifth when frosh Josh Ockimey crunched a two-run
homer. A bases-loaded walk, followed by an uncaught popup, made it 15-3 in the
sixth, then Ockimey hammered a three-run triple, thus becoming the first player
in city leagues playoff history to post as many as five RBI in consecutive
games. Earlier in that rally, winning reliever Joe Gorman (double) and Jimmy
Kerrigan (homer) walloped hits worth two RBI apiece. For La Salle, Ryan Otis and
starting pitcher Nick Burns halved six hits, P.J. Acierno had three RBI and
Corey Baiada slammed a homer. There were 30 hits (seven for extra bases), 15
walks and seven steals.
MAY 27
PUBLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS
Edison 9, Masterman 0: Nate Coronado, a star shortstop making his
first lifetime pitching start, allowed just one hit in five innings and struck
out 10 as the Owls won a quarterfinal for the first time in 20 attempts, dating
back to 1978. His brother, Nelson, also experienced a lifetime first: an
inside-the-park homer (worth two runs). Martin Nolasco had a two-run single. Due
to injuries and a previously scheduled family trip for the starting second
baseman, Masterman suited just nine players (one, coming off shoulder miseries,
was making his first appearance of the season) and committed the same number of
errors. The lone hit, a groundball single to center, was delivered in the first
inning by cleanup batter David Ashbridge.
Washington 11, Esperanza 4: Dan Meade and Bryan Reiss homered, No.
9 hitter John Santos posted three RBI and winning pitcher Tom Marano (four
innings; Meade finished up) went 3-for-4 with one RBI. Esperanza's Jeffrey
Escolatico lofted two sac flies.
Central 15, Franklin Towne 2 (5 inn.): The 3-4-5 hitters, Pete
Rowe (triple), Mark Gervasi and Gabe Buchanan (double), thirded nine RBI as the
Lancers experienced minimal stress. Mike Cavallaro (three innings) and Rowe did
the pitching. Rowe and Dan Quinn (3-for-3, double) scored four runs apiece.
Markus Malave and Angel Lazu managed RBI for Towne.
Frankford 17, Northeast 0 (3 inn.): Israel Diaz (three-run) and
Ricardo Calcano (two-run) slugged homers and winning pitcher Omar Cruz (3-for-3,
three RBI) bagged a pair of RBI singles in an 11-run second. The Pioneers batted
just twice.
MAY 26
PUBLIC LEAGUE
AAA FINAL
Franklin Towne 14, Phila. Electrical 8: The Coyotes battled back from
deficits of 7-0 (first inning) and 8-1 (third) as the first four batters
combined to score 13 runs and the first six notched all but one of the RBI.
Cleanup hitter Aron Litostanski went 3-for-5 with a double and four RBI. Markus
Malave turned two hits and two walks into four runs scored with the help of four
stolen bases. Angel Lazu posted two singles, a walk, two steals, two RBI and
three runs scored and George Klein had identical stats! Tyler Landis (two RBI)
and Matt Kubacki (3-for-3, walk, two doubles, three RBI) completed the assault.
Damian Padilla, pitcher No. 3, worked the last four innings, allowing one hit
and a walk while striking out six. Losing pitcher Tommy Hicks went 3-for-4 with
an RBI double.
MAY 25
CATHOLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINALS
Neumann-Goretti 13, Lansdale 3 (5 inn.): The Saints improved to 19-0
overall as frosh Josh Ockimey went 2-for-3 with five RBI, a three-run triple in
the third and a two-run single in the fourth, while Mike "Zoom" Zolk turned
three singles into three RBI and he scored all three times, as well. Joe Gorman
went the distance. A double error on a grounder ended the game.
Wood 3, Conwell-Egan 0: Brady McNab gave the Vikings the only run
they needed with a two-out, first-inning single. He added a sac fly in the third
and Joey Monaghan doubled home Kevin Sullivan (triple) in the fourth. Jeff
Courter pitched a three-hitter (all singles) with six strikeouts and was perfect
through four full innings.
Bonner 10, Judge 0 (6 inn.): Matt Dolan permitted one hit, a
fourth-inning, groundball single inside the third-base bag by Mike O'Hanlon, a
lefty swinger. Jim Haley went 3-for-4 with three RBI and his two-run double sent
everyone home with two away in the sixth. Paul Shepherd and Joe Haley, Jim's
brother, halved four RBI.
La Salle 5, Ryan 4: Kevin Long posted a six-hitter and Ryan Otis went
2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. P.J. Acierno broke a 3-3 tie in the visiting
sixth with a single to left. The game ended on a weird play: Long's well-timed
bullet to Joe Forcellini picked a Ryan player off first. By the time the player
was tagged out, Mike Anusky had scored from second to leave the Raiders one run
short.
PUBLIC LEAGUE
AA FINAL
Esperanza 12, Prep Charter 5: En route to falling into a 5-2 hole,
the Toros committed SIX errors in the second inning. The only senior starter,
righthander Felix Torraca-Dedos, maintained his cool and wound up contributing
two hits to an eight-run, fifth-inning outburst -- leadoff single and a
ground-rule homer high into the trees fronting the cemetery beyond leftfield at
Front and Erie. It was his first career dinger. Torraca-Dedos went the distance,
allowing six hits and -- you guessed it -- no earned runs. One of Jovanny
Zavala's two doubles plated two runs. Aderly Perez went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Michael "Beef" Sandefur posted PC's lone RBI.
PUBLIC LEAGUE
AAA THIRD ROUND
Phila. Electrical 18,
Roxborough 8 (5 inn.:) Steve McCollum went 4-for-4 with four RBI, Tommy
Hicks doubled and tripled for three RBI and Chuck Fitzgerald got the win. The
Chargers posted 10 runs in the fifth and Danny LaPorte's RBI single ended it.
INTER-AC LEAGUE

triple and slam for six RBI, making Christian Salem a winner.
MAY 24
CATHOLIC LEAGUE FIRST ROUND
La Salle 12, Roman 1 (5 inn.): Nick Burns allowed four hits (fourth
inning, in succession), Tyler Kozeniewski went 2-for-2 with a walk, three-run
homer and four RBI and Colin Pyne smoked a pair of RBI doubles. While totaling
nine runs in the first two frames, La Sale lofted three sac flies (Corey Baiada,
Jules Arici, Joe Forcellini).
Judge 6, O'Hara 0: Kurt Sowa scattered seven hits while Shane "Stosh"
Malone (worth two RBI) and Mike O'Hanlon bagged doubles.
Conwell-Egan 9, McDevitt 1: Domenic Petrino (four innings) and Beau
Fleming permitted three hits apiece. Fleming turned two hits into four RBI while
Matt Wagner and Nick DeChristofaro halved four hits and as many ribbies.
Lansdale 6, Carroll 5: Ryan "Mugsy" Mulligan scored on Rory Clemens'
fielder's choice in the home sixth, breaking a 5-5 tie. Eric Lewandowski posted
two RBI while Greg Meyle and Kevin Neumann had two hits apiece. Carroll's Eric
McGough had two hits.
PUBLIC LEAGUE PLAYOFFS
CLASS AA THIRD ROUND
Prep Charter 17, Phila. Academy 8: Michael "Beef" Sandefur lofted a
grand slam to create an 8-8 tie in the fourth. The Huskies broke it with nine in
the sixth as Mike Borelli homered twice (two-run, slam) for six of his seven
RBI. Borelli also notched the win, fanning nine in five innings over two stints
(second inning, then fourth through seventh). The Huskies managed just six hits.
For PA, Trevor Newcomb and Travis Zink halved six hits and Newcomb posted more
RBI, 3-2.
CLASS AAA THIRD ROUND
Roxborough 8, Swenson 6: John Spinks (double) and Frank LeGrady
posted two RBI each and Ralph Martinez allowed seven hits. The Indians broke a

threw out three basestealers and launched a two-run homer. Chuck Fitzgerald had
an RBI triple and Danny LaPorte scattered six hits.
MAY 23
PUBLIC LEAGUE PLAYOFFS
CLASS A FINAL
Masterman 2, GAMP 0: David Ashbridge pitched a three-hitter with
seven strikeouts to outduel Dom Raia (six-hitter, 15 Ks). Joey Powell went
2-for-3 with a walk, RBI (sixth inning; infield single), two steals and a run
scored (first inning; on an error). Chris Woods went 2-for-3 with a double. For
GAMP, Tyler Criniti's single was one of only two balls to leave the infield.
This also served as the District 12 championship game.
CLASS AAAA QUALIFIERS
Frankford 11, Germantown 1 (5 inn.): Augusto Ortega went 3-for-3
with a double and two RBI to make Hector Cerda a winner.
Northeast 10, Lincoln 9: With two away and the bases loaded in the
home seventh, the Vikings won it on a dropped flyball (off the bat of Steve
Martinez) that scored all three runners. John Alford went 1.2 innings to win in relief. Luis Contreras
collected two hits, two walks and six steals, including one of home.

homered. Ralph Martinez (one inning) and John Spinks did the pitching.
Phila. Academy 7, Bok 4: With PA's field still too messy, this
game was moved to Bok. Brian Walsh allowed five hits, struck out 12 and became a
winner when Chris Maguire's two-run double highlighted a four-run "home" sixth.
Chris Ropars went 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
CLASS AA SECOND ROUND
Bodine 4, Franklin LC 2: Kyle Lewis (also 2-for-3) pitched a
seven-hitter with 15 strikeouts and two walks. Roberto Marrero doubled twice for
one RBI.
Prep Charter 4, Bracetti 2: Frosh lefty Robert Freer spun a
no-hitter with nine Ks and six walks, and Mike Sandefur won it with a walkoff,
two-run homer.
CATHOLIC LEAGUE
RED PREPLAYOFF
Roman 2, SJ Prep 1: These two, Judge and O'Hara finished in a
four-way tie for fourth at 4-8. A coin flip decided fourth/fifth with Judge
besting O'Hara. This one, played at La Salle High, was for sixth. Erik DeLone
allowed seven hits, induced 15 groundball outs and stranded the tying run at
second after Jawan McAllister's RBI single moved the Hawks within one. Matt
Stoffere (on a passed ball) scored for Roman in the third. Rich Houck's sac fly
brought home a fifth-inning run.
INTER-AC LEAGUE
Malvern 11, Haverford School 5: Having clinched the title

MAY 21
INTER-AC LEAGUE

through five innings) and the Friars supported him, thus clinching the title
