Giongo Family Tragedy Return to TedSilary.com homepage On 12/16/07, Bernadette Giongo, the mother of Kennedy-Kenrick football lineman Shane Giongo (also the senior class president) died in the family's Conshohocken home. Her husband was arrested and charged with her murder. Later, fire damaged a relative's home where Shane and his younger brothers, Colin and Quinn, were staying. Colin (fifth grade) and Quinn (second) are students at Conshohocken Catholic School. Colin plays football for Our Lady of Victory, in Norristown, which combines with Conshy CS to form a team. Below is info on how to help the Giongo brothers and your expressions of support. Thank you. Please send to silaryt@phillynews.com. |

I
know we flood everyone with emails, and you answer the call

dinners, some how it always just comes together and becomes
the most appreciative meal for the team.
May God

Dear Shane, Colin, and Quinn,
I only got to know your Mom this year at KK football. I am
very glad that I did. One thing was very evident….she adored the three of
you. Her face lit up when she talked about you. No doubt, you brought her real
joy and were a source of great pride. I encourage each of you not to
allow this senseless tragedy to define you. She raised each of you to be
fine young men. As you travel through this earthly life without her physically,
know that she is right beside you guiding your way. She will forever be in
your hearts helping and aiding you through life and the many decisions that
you will face. I know that her light will shine bright through each of
you. You were blessed with a great Mom. Her legacy will be each one of
you. I can think of no greater tribute. Know that you have our full
support and that you will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.
May God Bless You Abundantly,
-- Jacquie Guidone and Family

UPDATE . . . DEC. 27
On Dec. 21, SJ Prep junior Mark Giubilato, the backup QB this past
season, copied Ted on an email he sent out to players, coaches and parents
connected with the Prep Football Family.
He indicated he was touched by the Giongos' situation and felt compelled
to help.
Here is part of that email:
When e-mailing or calling, please leave a cell number, or house address
so we can pick up any possible contributions. All are appreciated.
Guys, again, let's show the Catholic League families why we are leaders
not only on the football field, but also in our respective communities.
I will send a follow up e-mail listing all contributors and what we
contributed as a team. Thank you for any help.
Mark indicated he would be working in tandem with fellow
junior Mike Yeager, a defensive back and part-time running back. (Both are expected to
be headliners next season). Mark and/or his father, Mark Sr., an
assistant coach at the Prep, made steady contact with Ted to provide
updates on their fund-raising progress. Mark, who lives on the Main
Line, and Mike, who lives in South Jersey, drove far and wide to make
pickups at assorted houses/businesses.
At about 5:30 on Dec. 27, Mark called to say he and Mike had collected
close to $1,900 in cash, checks and gift cards -- and that more had been
sent directly to the assorted funds mentioned at the top of this page --
and that they'd be visiting the Daily News to drop off an envelope
containing everything they had. The guys came into our office and indeed dropped
off the donations.
Contact was made with K-K FB-basketball player Greg Santangelo, a
close friend of Shane's. Greg said Shane would be attending K-K's
basketball game at Norristown, and arrangements were made to meet Shane
there.
Ted met up at halftime with Shane and presented him with the gifts in the
office of athletic director Chuck Knowles (former FB coach and AD
at Conwell-Egan; Bob Davis, Chuck's assistant, was instrumental
in helping to make sure everything clicked). Shane was overwhelmed. He could not believe that young
men who don't even know him had gone to so much trouble to help. "This
is amazing. We're from the Blue Division. We don't even play the Prep," he said, smiling.
"How do these guys even know who I am?"
Shane was honored to pose for a picture holding a thank-you sign prepared
by Bob Vetrone Jr., of the DN sports department.
Full contact info will be provided for Shane to Mark and Mike, and vice
versa, so they can talk.
This was a wonderful gesture by Mark and Mike. Thank you so much, guys.
(Please look right below for pictures of Mark/Mike and Shane.)

She said it was "inspired" by Bernadette. Thank you, Donna.
Well, as this season is coming to a close, I have been asked to write you
one more time to reflect upon the past 4 years for our
seniors. Those of you who are moving closer and closer to
senior year, you too will find both joy and sadness as the
end of the season draws near.
Freshman year our boys stepped on to the field in August that summer;
some were friends from grade school and some were total
strangers. The rivalry they experienced on the field
representing their respective grade schools, now was to
become one team – a high school team. A team that would
project pride, courage, and camaraderie through thick and
thin, the senior boys of today immediately bonded in a
friendship to last through all four years. They immediately
became one unit – a unit which stays together on and off the
field. Through each win or loss they held their heads high,
they comforted each other and rejoiced with each other.
Defeat may have presented itself on the scoreboard, but
defeat was not in their hearts; for each game they learned
to be a little stronger and a little wiser, their dedication
to the team was ever evident both on and off the field.
Their friendships formed in freshman year helped guide them
to be a stronger team by senior year.
I can remember sending my son to football camp freshman year, he already
had a shaved head, but bald was now the new word to describe
his head when he returned. It was football camp that
brought these boys to the everlasting friendship that exists
today. I can only tell you how rewarding it is to watch
your boy on the field freshman, sophomore, and junior years
and then as a senior watch how he has matured in sport and
self as young man. Tears come to my eyes just thinking
about coming to the close of the season.
As parents, we have adopted all the boys as our own, when they step on
the field they become ‘MY boys’. We cheer each one down the
field, we cringe each time someone is lying on the field,
and say a Hail Mary for him to get up unharmed. I can only
tell you, that it has been one fantastic experience.
As time draws close, even though they will be going in separate
directions I know these boys will remain friends through the
years. Should one or all find themselves on a college
football team they will be cheering each other on to
victory. And wow, look at all the tickets they will need to
secure should one go pro.
All the games, all the pasta dinners, all the snack stand hours, the fund
raising, sitting in the stands in the rain or bundled up in
just about everything you own, washing those muddy uniforms,
scrubbing the grass stains; every one is a memory you share
with your son. May God grant you many memories, may the
four years we all experience be as rewarding for you as it
has been for all of us. May the friendships formed through
a pigskin, a 100 yard field, and 2 goal posts remain
forever, both for KKCHS Wolverine players and for the
Wolverine Team Parents.
I would like to say, it has been my pleasure to meet and get to know both
teams. Our boys have grown into men before our eyes, time
passes so quickly, and yet I am honored to have been a part
of this experience. I hope all the underclass parents find
the ‘football experience’ as fun and as rewarding as the
senior parents. We will miss you and we will continue to
cheer you onto victory in our hearts.
Go Blue, Go Gold!
