Standing Pat Baseball 2006 Return to TedSilary.com Home Page Pat "Chuleta" Lewis, an
outfielder, was a member of Frankford High's 2005 Public League baseball
champions. He attended the non-league game vs. La Salle on 4/12 and sent an
e-mail with some details. Looks like he wants to be a regular (smile). "Chuleta"
is Spanish for meat; from "Bull Burham." |

NON-LEAGUE
Frankford 10, Wood 3
It was a beautiful day for baseball at Frankford's Baldwin
Field as the Pioneers faced off against the Vikings of Archbishop Wood in some
non-league play. Edwin Burgos got the nod from head coach Bob Peffle and
looked good in the first inning allowing only an infield single. The Frankford
squad jumped on Wood's starter, Jr. Charles Kruzits, early to take a 2-0
on a Juan Carlos Torres' 2-run double. Wood quickly answered with three
as Burgos showed a bit of early struggle with his location. A bases-loaded walk
scored a run and then a RBI single, by Matt King, tied the game. The
Frankford staff thought Burgos had enough and sent him to the outfield and
brought in Sr. Richard Jimenez. The scoring in the top half of the second
was capped off as So. Andrew Finley received the RBI by way of a
fielder's choice. With his team down, 3-2, Sr. Ramon Reyes hit a
bases-clearing double to deep left-center that gave Frankford the lead. The very
next batter, Torres, collected another RBI while stroking a single and scoring
Reyes. The game then became a defensive showdown as the middle infield of
Frankford turned three 6-4-3 double plays, in the middle innings. Archbishop
Wood's mid-infield looked pretty good as well, snagging some hard hit balls. In
the fifth and sixth, Frankford started to pick up the bats again extending their
lead to eight. Jeffry Bru picked up a RBI with his single in the fifth.
Esteban "Shorty" Meletiche picked up 3-RBI on a long distance double that
hit half way up the fence in left-center and Fr. Edwin "Tito" Rohena
stroked a double in the gap to top off the scoring. Tito also handled relief
duties in the final two innings. Jimenez and Rohena did not allow any runs in
their combined 5 1/3 innings. Jimenez picks up the win and boosts Frankford's
record to 2-0 vs. the Catholic League. This team seems to be rolling along
playing better and better every game. Frankford takes on Washington Monday, at
Frankford, to resume league play. With the way Frankford is playing lately,
Washington better bring their "A" game and be prepared for a good battle on the
diamond.

NON-LEAGUE
Frankford 9, La Salle 5
La Salle was ranked number one in Southeastern Pennsylvania's Top Ten
Polls and Frankford, who is extremely underrated, is in the "under
consideration" list. La Salle capitalized on a bad first inning by Frankford,
scoring four runs. Frankford stormed back in the bottom half with three of their
own. It stayed that way until the fourth inning when Frankford scored five on a
Shorty Meletiche triple off the gate in deep left field and then a
Ramon Reyes laser also off the left field fence. Juan Carlos Torres
added another RBI on a single. Torres started the game on the mound but after
struggling in the first he moved to his very familiar first base position.
Tito Rohena took over on the mound in the second inning and settled
the game very quickly not allowing a run in three innings. He was then relieved
by Edwin Burgos, who also kept LaSalle scoreless through two strong
innings. Frankford then added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to stretch
their lead to five. Shorty then stepped in to take the mound in the seventh and
looked very well. Frankford began to look a little excited to be leading with
two out in the seventh and made three unlikely errors to allow LaSalle to score
one more. But then came a ground ball to Richard Jimenez at shortstop,
who flipped to Jon Bracero for the force and the win, 9-5. This was a big
win for Coach Bob Peffle and his team, who just proved to the rest of the
doubters that not only can they play with the best of them, they can beat them
also. I become angry every time I hear someone say, "But Frankford is in the
Public League." They don't understand that this team has some of the best talent
I have ever seen at this level. I have played in the Catholic and Public Leagues
and I have never met, let alone played, with a group of talented kids who work
harder, and LOVE doing it. They prove to everyone who thinks you can't work hard
and enjoy doing it, that it is very possible. Frankford players have a passion
for the game that most people don't even realize exists, and that is one of the
biggest reasons they are as successful as they are.
