Randy's Weekly Honors, '07

Return to TedSilary.com Home Page

Randy Seidman is a constant at Washington games and this year is again giving out college honors to Philly Guys playing college baseball. Very cool!  Randy graduated from Washington, which his two sons have also attended. Randy is an award-winning producer of televised sporting events and now works for CN8, in addition to doing free-lance work for major networks and The News Gleaner. His career highlight -- producing games, on back-to-back days, when Julius Erving scored his 30,000th point and Mike Schmidt slammed his 500th homer. He may be reached at rseidman9@aol.com.
Check out Randy's awards from 2006.

Stats are for the 2007 season for all Philadelphia Catholic, Public and Inter/Ac appearing on season opening
college baseball rosters. There were 172 players representing 80 different colleges. Please send any mistakes
or omissions to rseidman9@aol.com.

2007 Hometown Philly All-Star & All-Rookie Selections

Former Catholic, Inter-Ac and Public League players peppered the lineups at the collegiate level once again. In all, 173 players were on season opening rosters, representing 80 different institutes of higher learning. There was success stories at every level, with many being recognized by their respective conferences. The second annual Hometown Philly Awards include First-Team, Second-Team, Honorable Mention, and All-Rookie selections. Players who were 2006 Hometown Philly choices are noted in bold blue. Still to come is the final posting for this season. It will include season stats for all players (where available). Yeah, football and basketball get all the notice, and that's probably the way it should be. This is just my way of getting recognition for these student-athletes, who are all very deserving. As always, thanks Ted, on behalf of everyone who uses and enjoys tedsilary.com

(ROMAN CATHOLIC)
HT: 6-3      WT: 195      SR RH PITCHER
PHILADELPHIA, PA
Although Gwynedd-Mercy was eliminated in the NCAA Tournament Mid-Atlantic Regional, they would have never gotten that far without the playoff heroics of Matt Daley. The senior started against Frostburg in the tournament opener, allowing one run in five innings. Pitching with just two days rest, Matt pitched 5.2 innings of scoreless relief and notched the win against The College of New Jersey. In those games, he allowed one run in 10.2 innings (0.84 ERA), with four strikeouts. For his efforts, Daley was selected to the Mid-Atlantic Tournament All-Region Team. The Griffins earned their NCAA bid by winning the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference championship. Daley went 8.2 innings for the win eliminating Arcadia, on Gwynedd-Mercy's road the PAC championship, their third overall and first since 2001. For the season, Daley finished with a 5-1 record in nine games. Matt and senior teammate Josh Thomas end their career tied as the winningest pitchers in Griffins history with 18 victories apiece. The Roman Catholic High grad was selected as a First-Team All-Catholic pitcher in 2003. Joining Matt as First-Team Southern Division pitchers in 2003, were a pair of athletes who recently concluded outstanding college careers: Frank Gailey, Archbishop Carroll (West Chester), and Mike Antonini, Cardinal O' Hara (19th-ranked Georgia College and State).

JOHN MALLOY
La SALLE UNIVERSITY
(CONWELL-EGAN)
HT: 5-10      WT: 170      OUTFIELDER
FAIRLESS HILLS, PA
John Malloy capped off a fantastic, record-setting season in style, batting .400 (8-20) in the Explorers final four games of the season. Highlights of the week included his 3-for-3 season finale performance at Fordham, and hitting his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot at St. Peter's. John started his college career off with a bang, as he had a school-record 24-game hit streak. It was also an A-10 freshman record, and fell just one game short of the all-time A-10 hitting streak. After going hitless against Saint Louis on April 7, John went on to hit in the next 13 consecutive games. He established two new single-season freshman records at LaSalle: hits (69) and doubles (17). John finished the season batting .327 in 48 games, and led the Explorers in games, hits, at bats, and doubles. He was named to the Atlantic Ten All-Rookie Team. During the season, he was chosen A-10 Rookie of the Week four times. This is John's second selection as Hometown Philly Rookie of the Week. He was previously cited for the week ending March 18. Malloy was a first-team All-Catholic selection as Conwell-Egan won the Catholic League championship last season.

MIKE LORENTSON
PENN STATE
(MALVERN PREP)
HT: 6-3      WT: 185      SOPH LH PITCHER
SPRINGFIELD, PA
The fortunes of Penn State baseball took a dramatic U-turn midway into this season. The Nittany Lions appeared headed toward their fourth losing season in the last six years. However, coach Robbie Wine's squad has won 15 of their last 20 games overall, and are 14-4 in the Big Ten during that span. Sophomore reliever Mike Lorentson is also experiencing good times. After sitting out last year as a medical redshirt, he started this season with an 0-1 record and a 5.68 ERA in his first seven games. Both he and the Lions really took off during the second half of the season. In his last six appearances, Mike has a 3-0 record with a 2.35 ERA. He has allowed just 4 hits in 7.2 innings. Penn State already has secured a spot in the Big Ten tournament, and will host Ohio State for four games during the final weekend of the regular season.
Mike was a Coaches All Inter-Ac selection at Malvern Prep in 2003 and 2004. The lefty was drafted in the 38th round by the San Diego Padres in the 2004 Major League Amateur Draft. Prior to attending Penn State, Mike played at Cochise Junior College for one season.

Hometown Philly's Rookie of the Week
for week ending May 6, 2007

MATT ZIELINSKI
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND
(La SALLE COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL)
HT: 6-3      WT: 200      LH PITCHER
SOUTHAMPTON, PA
For the second time this season, Matt Zielinski is the Hometown Philly Rookie of the Week. In his most recent outing, Matt pitched his first collegiate complete-game, earning a 3-1 win against Massachusetts. In his nine innings, Zielinski allowed six hits, and one earned run, to improve his season record to 5-3, with a team-leading 3.55 ERA in 12 games (11 starts). Before the halfway point of the season, the freshman became the Spiders' go-to guy. He usually gets the important assignment of starting against Atlantic 10 rivals, and is slated to pitch this weekend when the Spiders travel to the Main Line to play the Saint Joseph's Hawks. Matt is sure to have a big rooting section for him at Elmwood Park. Game times are Saturday at 11am, and Sunday at noon. Richmond needs only one win against St. Joe's (9-34) to clinch a tournament berth. With a sweep and some luck, the Spiders could secure one of the top two seeds, which would give them a first-round bye in the upcoming A-10 playoffs, this year hosted by Dayton.
Matt was a first Team All-Catholic as a junior and senior at La Salle College High School, and finished his high school career with a 1.57 ERA.
