His career highlight -- producing games, on back-to-back days, when Julius Erving scored his 30,000th point and Mike Schmidt slammed his 500th homer. He may be reached at rseidman9@aol.com.
Check out Randy's awards from 2006 and 2007.

Welcome to the third season of the Hometown Philly Awards! When Ted Silary started this site some 5.2 million hits ago, it was devoted to the athletes of the Philadelphia Public, Catholic and Inter-Academic Leagues. Through this decade, Ted and his merry band of reporters have kept the fans in and around Philly informed on the exploits of these players. For those former high school baseball players who have gone on to play in college, they receive the unprecedented honor of being mentioned in Ted’s site for up to an additional four or five years. So in the spirit of levity, and probably not brevity, buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Hometown Philly's Player of the Week
for week ending April 27, 2008

ERICH ENNS
MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE
(GERMANTOWN ACADEMY)
HT: 6-3     WT: 180      SOPH OF
LANSDALE, PA
It was a record-setting week for Middlebury College's Erich Enns. In game two of a doubleheader last Saturday against Hamilton College (NY), Erich went 5-for-6, with a pair of singles and a school single-game record three home runs and eight RBIs. In five games last week, the sophomore hit .500 (9-18), with seven walks (.640 OB%). Of those nine hits, six went for extra bases (1 triple and 5 HRs), as he drove in 14 runs and scored nine times.
For his exploits, Erich was also selected as the conference player of the week. Middlebury belongs to the New England Small College Athletic Association (NESCAC). The school, founded in 1800, is located in the Champlain Valley of central Vermont, nestled between Vermont's Green Mountains and New York's Adirondacks. With an enrollment of approximately 2,350 students, class size averages to 16 students per class. Other schools in the NESCAC are Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Connecticut College, Hamilton, Trinity, Tufts, Wesleyan and Williams. There are three other local products playing in the conference. Penn Charter's Jim Entwistle is a sophomore infielder at Williams (MA), Haverford School's Nick Tom is a sophomore outfielder at Bowdoin (ME), and Erich's high school teammate from Germantown Academy, Mark Shimrock, also attends Middlebury. By the way, Shimrock, a junior, has put up huge numbers this season for the Panthers, sporting a .411 batting average with 4 HRs and 37 RBI in 27 games.
Erich was a first Team All Inter-Academic League selection in 2006, as Germantown Academy won their third Inter-Ac title in four seasons.

Hometown Philly's Rookie of the Week
for week ending April 27, 2008
JARED FARBMAN
PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY
(CENTRAL)
HT: 6-4   WT: 175     FRESHMAN RHP
PHILADELPHIA, PA
The amazing turn-around continues at Philadelphia University. The Rams started the season with a tough non-conference schedule and lost their first eight games, and won only once in their first 13 games. But since that point, Philly U has been on a torrid pace, and even took possession of first place in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) with a 16-7 league mark. Freshman pitcher Jared Farbman was able to help his team in a variety of roles last week. In the Rams' 9-3 win against Chestnut Hill College last Tuesday, Jared started and pitched seven innings, allowing three earned runs and fanning five, while running his season record to 5-0. Four days later, Farbman came out of the bullpen and notched his first career save as Philly U defeated Felician College, 10-8, in the first game of a doubleheader. In the nightcap, the athletic Farbman pinch-ran and scored a run in the 11th inning, but the Rams fell 4-3. By the way, Farbman scored on an RBI single by fellow Public Leaguer Brandon O'Malley (Northeast).
Philly U started the season 0-8, record since 18-11
This was Jared's second selection as Hometown Rookie of the Week this season.

HANEEF HILL
VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY
(GERMANTOWN)
HT: 5-8     WT: 180      SR RHP
PHILADELPHIA, PA

It has been a long journey from the streets of Germantown to the campus of Virginia State University for Haneef Hill. The senior right-hander is wrapping up his career with the Trojans in style. He was the winning pitcher in his final home game as VSU won the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Baseball Tournament. After posting victories in the first two games of the tourney, head coach Merrill Morgan handed Haneef the ball for the CIAA championship game, and he did not disappoint. The Trojans won the title, 14-7, against Saint Augustine's, as Hill recorded his fifth win of the season. It was also his third complete-game of the season. The senior Sports Management major allowed eight hits in his nine innings, with four earned runs and three strikeouts.
The title was the 24th CIAA crown in the history of the VSU baseball program, which began in 1923. VSU has an enrollment of 4,300, and is located in Petersburg, VA. Other CIAA members: Saint Augustine's (Raleigh, NC), Bowie State (MD), Elizabeth City State (NC), Saint Paul's (Lawrenceville, VA), Virginia Union (Richmond, VA), Fayetteville State (NC), Johnson C. Smith (Charlotte, NC), Livingstone (Salisbury, NC), and Shaw (Raleigh, NC).
Haneef was a First-Team All-Public honoree in 2004, and was on that year's Public League Carpenter Cup roster, coached by Frankford's Bob Peffle.

RYAN TERRY
MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY
(CONWELL-EGAN)
HT: 6-0      WT: 190        3B
LEVITTOWN, PA
The Monmouth Hawks have been having a blast for about 6 weeks now. That's when they went on an amazing, extended run of solid baseball, winning 24 of their last 25 games. Monmouth started that stretch with a school record 15-game winning streak. Starting with the third game of that streak, Ryan Terry has been in the starting lineup, mostly at third base, and has been an offensive force. In four games last week, he batted .600 (9-15), with 7 runs scored. In addition, he hit his 5th homer of the season and stroked three doubles. Through games of April 25, Ryan is batting .349. After the Hawks record setting win streak was snapped (at Wagner, Apr. 12), they reeled off another 9 straight wins, and sport a 26-9 record.
First 10 Games:  Monmouth   2-8     Ryan Terry .222  (4-18),  0 HR,   2 RBI
Next 25 Games: Monmouth  24-1    Ryan Terry .374 (34-91), 5 HR, 24 RBI
This was Ryan's second selection as Hometown Rookie of the Week this season.
Honorable Mention:
* Sean Quigley, Neumann IF (Roman Catholic) last week at the plate: 3-7, and made 1st pitching appearance, recording the win in 3.1 IP
* Mike Martinelli, Scranton OF (LaSalle HS) April 16 vs Kings: 3-4, 4 R, April 20th vs Juniata: 1st collegaite pitching appearance: 1.1 IP, 2 R

First to Finish:
There are 73 teams that feature the talents of players from the Catholic, Inter-Ac and Public Leagues. The first of those teams to finish its season are the Lincoln University Lions. The Hometown Philly Awards accentuate the positive, so there is no need to even mention Lincoln's 1-22-1 season record. However, one guy stuck it out for four seasons, put up some pretty numbers, and will get his degree in Business Administration. West Catholic grad Duane Wyse finished his career at Lincoln with a .291 batting average in 78 games, with a remarkable 77 stolen bases in 82 attempts (94%). He was among the top five in NCAA stolen bases per game as a soph and junior. Josiah Barnes, a senior from Overbrook High has also played his last game. He appeared at five positions (1B, 3B, RF, C, P). As a pitcher, he was often asked to "take one for the team" against much stronger opponents, therefore some of his pitching totals were askew. However, although not a Hometown Philly product, teammate Peter Reyes (Bronx, NY) deserves the Purple Heart. He was the starting and losing pitcher in a 30-0 shutout on April 13th against Briarcliffe. His line: 2.2 IP, 24 H, 26 R, 16 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 2 HB.
The second team to wrap it up for this season was Guilford College (NC). Chestnut Hill Academy's Mike Braverman saw spot duty in his just completed junior season. The Guilford Quakers final record was 17-22 overall, 6-12 Old Dominion Athletic Conference. In the spirit of the 76ers NBA playoff appearance, what former Sixer (actually still with the team), went to Guilford, and eventually finished as the NBA's second leading scorer in back-to-back seasons with the San Diego Clippers? Answer later on - I lied, the answer is now - its Lloyd B. Free, now known as World B. Free, currently the 76ers Director of Player Development/Basketball Ambassador)

Celebrating John Marzano

All of the family, friends, former teammates, colleagues and fans of the late John Marzano are feeling an emptiness. He brightened the lives of so many, yet he was just one of us. A native son of Philly. A Public League star at Central. He played at Temple under the legendary master, Skip Wilson. He went on to play major league baseball, the dream of so many, but a reality for so few. Yet there he was spending ten seasons with the Red Sox, Rangers and Mariners. And then to become such a popular fixture in the local media, most notably with his work on Comcast SportsNet's Phillies Postgame. John Marzano is the epitome of a Hometown Philly player - a scrapper, a real blue collar kind of player, who persevered and was successful in a game he loved, and then came back home to give a piece of himself back to the community ...

STEVE DeBARBERIE
ALVERNIA COLLEGE
(MONSIGNOR BONNER)
HT: 6-3   WT: 210   SOPH OF
DREXEL HILL, PA
  Steve DeBarberie
would not mind if Alvernia could schedule Eastern University more than the 3 games they played this season. In his 20 games played prior to the 3-game weekend series vs Eastern, Steve was hitting .164 with 0 HR and 6 RBI. After the series sweep, his season average ballooned to .333, to go along with s 5 HR and 20 RBI. Other than T-ball, I couldn’t ever imagine anybody hitting .882 in a series, but that’s what 15 hits in 17 at bats will do. He homered in three straight games, and reached base safely in 10 consecutive plate appearances. Phew! My keyboard is burning up!
The Crusaders are hoping this will jump-start Steve for the remainder of the season. After all, he did hit .339 (42-124) in 38 games as a freshman last season, and was named to the Honorable Mention All-Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Team.
Steve was a second team All-Catholic selection as a senior at Bonner in 2006.
The numbers (thru 4/13) - they don't lie .....
1st 20 Gms:  .164   (9-55), 0 HR,   6 RBI,  5 R,  1 2B

Hometown Philly's Rookie of the Week
for week ending April 13, 2008
JARED FARBMAN
PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY
(CENTRAL)
HT: 6-4   WT: 175     FRESHMAN RHP
PHILADELPHIA, PA
Philadelphia University Head Coach Mark Heineman has been at Campbell's Field to watch the last two Public League championships games between Central and Frankford. Jared Farbman started both games for Central, and he and the Lancers won in 2006, with Frankford winning in 2007, their fourth title in five years. Apparently the coach liked what he saw in the lanky righthander, and it is paying big dividends for the Philly U program.
Last week, Jared tossed a 3-hitter in a 10-0 shutout against Bloomfield College. He walked two and struck out ten, in his second shutout of his freshman season. In his most recent start, he allowed three hits and no earned runs in 5.2 innings to run his record to 4-0. For the second straight game, Farbman notched 10 strikeouts. Most importantly, his four wins have all come after Philly losses. Jared's first win came when his team's record stood at 0-8, his second win when they were 1-12. The Rams and their emerging ace have turned it around, and their record through April 16 is 10-16.
Honorable Mention:
* Kevin Culbert, Widener RHP (Cardinal O'Hara) last week: 2 GP, 1-0, 6 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 9 K (season: 0.96 ERA, 6 SV, 28 IP, 4 BB, 34 K)
* Ryan Nally, Gwynedd-Mercy OF (North Catholic) last week: 4 GP, .556 (5-9), 3 R, 5 RBI, 2 SB, 2 SH
* Ryan Kreider, Mercer CC RHP (Father Judge) last week: 3 APP, 0.84 ERA, 10.2 IP (season: 17 APP, 3-0, 3.29 ERA, 27.1 IP, 25 K)
* Anthony Cafagna, Richmond RHP (Chestnut Hill Academy) April 11 vs Temple: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
* Pete Greskoff, Brown 1B (Malvern Prep) last week: 3 GP, .667 (6-9), 2 HR, 8 RBI, 4 R, 2 doubles
More Central Casting:
Two of Jared Farbman's teammates from Central are also performing at a high level. Brandon Watson is a senior outfielder from Elizabethtown College. Last season, he batted .350, and was named to the First Team All Commonwealth Conference team. Career stats: .311 BA, 78 G, 79 H, .395 OB%. Junior Andrew Reynolds has been in the starting lineup for three seasons for Eastern University. He has been a valuable and versatile player (3B, DH, RHP), and has batted 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th this season. Career stats (very comparable to Watson). .314 BA, 76 G, 70 H, .418 OB%.

RYAN BUCH
MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY
(CONWELL-EGAN)
HT: 6-3      WT: 195      SOPH RHP
YARDLEY, PA
Ryan Buch is no sophomore slumper. After an award-filled freshman season, Ryan is not resting on his laurels. Not only is he 3-1 on the season, but his Monmouth Hawks just tied a school record with their 13th consecutive win. This past weekend, Monmouth swept Sacred Heart in a 4-game series to open Northeast Conference play. In game one of a Sunday doubleheader, Ryan got the start, and pitched a gem. Monmouth's 17-0 drubbing of Sacred Heart was Ryan's first collegiate shutout. He pitched a seven-inning complete game and allowed just one hit and struck out a career-high 14. Ryan had a no-hitter through 5.1 innings, and for his exploits was chosen as the Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week.
In 2007, Ryan recorded nine wins, setting a freshman record at Monmouth, and was chosen as the Conference Rookie of the Year. The Hawks were eliminated in the NCAA Regionals after losing to #5 Arizona State and Nebraska. Ryan started the Nebraska game and had a 4-2 lead when he was lifted for a reliever in the 7th inning.
Ryan was a member of the undefeated 2006 Catholic League champions. Conwell Egan finished the season No. 1 in Pennsylvania, No. 4 in the East and No. 29 nationally.

MIKE COLEMAN
SAINT JOSEPH'S UNIVERSITY
(MONSIGNOR BONNER)
HT: 5-9      WT: 170      OF/DH
DREXEL HILL, PA
Freshman Mike Coleman is currently getting his chance to shine for Saint Joseph’s. He appeared in 13 of the Hawks’ first 26 games, mostly in spot duty, and totaled just 13 at bats. However, after making four straight starts last week, and helping ignite the St. Joe’s offense from the top of the order, Mike might not be coming out of the starting lineup anytime soon. In those four starts, the redshirt freshman batted .357 (5-14), and was on base in 11 of 20 plate appearances. With Mike’s efficient week, his batting average rose to .333 and he went over the .500 mark in on-base pct (.514).
Mike batted .426 and .460 in his last two seasons at Bonner. He also captained and was a three-year letterman of the ice hockey team.
Honorable Mention:
* Ryan Kreider, Mercer Community College RHP (Father Judge) 2 scoreless relief appearances: 4.1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K

More Monmouth
Monmouth won the Northeast Conference championship last season with two area freshmen: Conwell-Egan's Ryan Buch and Archbishop Carroll's Andy McDonnell. I guess word must have filtered out that they had a positive experience, as four more Delaware Valley natives have joined them at the West Long Branch, NJ campus. New to the team are two more players from Conwell-Egan, Ryan Terry and John McDonald, and a pair of Malvern Prep graduates, Matt McEndy and brother Tim McEndy, who transferred after redshirting last season for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats. The Hawks travel to Staten Island to play Wagner on Friday afternoon, in hopes of setting a school-record with their 14th straight win.

SEAN MURPHY
HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY
(NORTH CATHOLIC)
HT: 6-4      WT: 190      SOPH RHP
PHILADELPHIA, PA
It really was a high point for North Catholic alum Sean Murphy when he took the mound last Saturday. The sophomore Salem Community College transfer was making his 7th appearance, but just his third start at the D-I level for the High Point (NC) Panthers. Locked in a pitchers' duel, Sean emerged with a 2-1 win against Big South Conference foe UNC-Asheville. He went 8 innings, allowed just 3 hits and 1 unearned run, with a walk and a season-high 7 strikeouts, in picking up his first win of the season. Season numbers: 4.08 ERA, 28.2 IP, 32 H, 7 BB, 20 K. Sean is making his case for staying in the rotation. He has been impressive in his last two outings, allowing just one earned run in 13.1 innings.
A couple of interesting tidbits about High Point’s win against UNC-Asheville: 1) UNC-Asheville is home for gargantuan 7’7” 360-lb Kenny George. The junior center from Chicago led the basketball team to an NIT berth. His ‘07-08 stats for the Bulldogs: 28 games (1 start), 12.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.3 blocks, 19.8 minutes, 70% FGs, 65% FTs, 0-0 3-PT FGs ... and 2) Sean Murphy's manager at High Point is Sal Bando, Jr., the former college All-Star. At the Univ. of Arizona, he played with Trevor Hoffman, Scott Erickson, and JT Snow. He also played at Oklahoma State, a fourth place finisher in the 1993 College World Series. Sal, Jr. played a few seasons in the Cardinals system. His brother Chris Bando, spent 8 seasons as a catcher for the Cleveland Indians. Of course, the old man, Sal Bando, Sr. played 16 major-league seasons with the Oakland A’s and Milwaukee Brewers. Bando, Sr. captained the A's to three consecutive World Series Championships, and later was the general manager for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Honorable Mention:
* Chez Angeloni

RYAN TERRY
MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY
(CONWELL-EGAN)
HT: 6-0      WT: 190      IF/OF/DH/C
LEVITTOWN, PA

A player’s versatility is a key factor when any baseball coach fills out his lineup card. Ryan Terry has earned increased playing time in his freshman season, and has produced. In Monmouth’s first 15 games, Ryan has been in the lineup at third base, left and right field, catcher and designated hitter. In a 3-game sweep of NJ Tech last week, Ryan had 7 hits in 14 at bats, with 7 runs scored, his first collegiate HR, and 4 RBI. In 10 games this season (7 starts), Terry is batting .324 with a .410 OBP.
Ryan was a key contributor in Conwell-Egan’s 2006 Catholic League championship season when he batted .431, as his team went 14-0 in league play and finished 22-5 overall.
Honorable Mention:
* Jared Farbman, Philadelphia U (Central) complete-game 2-hit shutout vs Univ. of Sciences (2 BB, 5 K)

What's In a Name?

While going through college rosters from Missoula, Montana through the University of South Florida, many interesting names popped up. Here are some of the highlights:
* Brooks Robinson, Georgia College and State. No relation to the Orioles' great - career goal: be a pro athlete - position, third base, where else?
* Chuck Boring, Pitt-Johnstown jr RHP, not much to say about this uninteresting player, other than he hails from Dilltown, PA, Hey, I don't make this stuff up, OK?
* David Huey, Pitt-Johnstown sr RHP, this Boring teammate doesn't have a wacky name, but he resides in Glen Campbell, PA. This Rhinestone Cowboy attended Punxsutawney High School (with Gus the Groundhog?)
* Matt Helm, Marshall sr IF, Downingtown, PA native has the same name as Dean Martin's private eye from a series of 1970s James Bonds wanna-be movies, with sizzling co-star Stella Stevens. Matt's dad, Jack Helm, played baseball and football at Penn ... and has a sense of humor!
* Tony Bernazard, Jacksonville soph IF - Princeton, NJ star playing in the south. His father, Tony, is the New York Mets VP for Player Development. He also chairs the Mets committee on "How to Avoid Another Late Season Meltdown."
* Vinny Dammann, Pace (NY) soph OF - ex-Gloucester Catholic player - Vinny really is "De Man"
* Angelo Bruno, Stonehill (MA) fr IF/P - I am not saying anything bad about this guy!!
* But this season's favorite goes to an outfielder from the University of Alabama-Huntsville. This 6-3 junior bats and throws right-handed, and although he steals a lot (12 SB), claims that he did not chop down ANY cherry tree - yes, it is George Washington. For the season, GW is batting a very presidential .312 in 22 starts for the Chargers.

DELAWARE VALLEY COLLEGE
(CARDINAL DOUGHERTY)
SENIOR RIGHT HANDED PITCHER
SOUTHAMPTON, PA
For his complete-game shutout win against Utica College on March 20, Dan was chosen as the Hometown Philly Player of the Week. Delaware Valley College won the game, 12-0, in Fort Pierce, Florida, during their spring training visit. Metague yielded consecutive singles with one out in the third. Those would be the only base runners he would allow. He walked none, and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts.
On the season, the Aggies are 8-7 through March 27. In 4 appearances, Dan sports a 2-0 record, with a 2.94 ERA, and 21 strikeouts in 15.1 innings.This was not Dan's only accolade of the week. He was also named on campus as the Delaware Valley College/Pete's Pizza Athlete of the Week. Pretty heady stuff, huh? FROM THE PUB TO THE BIGS
For the last three seasons, Chris Calciano, the former Lamberton High star, coached the Georgia College and State Bobcats. He guided his team to the Peach Belt Conference championship and reached the NCAA Regionals in each of the last two seasons. At GCSU, Calciano coached Mike Antonini (Cardinal O'Hara) and Brett DeFelice (Chestnut Hill Academy). Antonini was selected by the Mets in last season's draft, while DeFelice is a sophomore batting .327 for the Bobcats.
Last October, the college announced Calciano's departure to become a scout for the Boston Red Sox. He will oversee the Mid-Atlantic Region, covering Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and parts of Pennsylvania for the defending Major League champions. His career record at GCSU was 132-48 (.733), including a nine-week run atop the Division II polls during the 2006 season. “I'm excited about the transition from coaching college baseball to professional scouting and looking forward to identifying and signing the top amateur talent in the Mid-Atlantic region for the Boston Red Sox," said Calciano.

The West Chester Golden Rams are one of the early-season success stories in area college baseball. With a 16-game winning streak to start 2008, and a consistent spot in the Top 10 national rankings, West Chester is poised and ready to enter conference play. Their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener is March 28 vs Millersville. An ingredient of West Chester's quick start, are the quick feet of centerfielder Frank Nunan. The senior Temple-transfer has solidified the Golden Rams outfield defense, and has been a source of production batting ninth. During a recent five-game stretch, Nunan went 10-for-14 (.714), with 5 runs, 5 RBI and 3 steals. His stats thru March 20: started all 21 games (Golden Rams record: 19-2), .328 BA, .414 OBP, 10 runs, 10 RBI, 5 steals. Frank was a First-Team Hometown Philly All-Star in 2006, when he was a sophomore at Temple, and hit .306. (CARDINAL O'HARA)
HT: 5-10    RIGHT-HANDED RELIEVER

Joining West Chester as one of the top teams in the Delaware Valley, past and present, are the Widener Pioneers. Winning 14 of their first 16 games this season, Widener is also positioned to start conference play, as their Commonwealth Conference slate gets underway with a three-game series against Elizabethtown, March 28-29. Putting out the fires this season is freshman Kevin Culbert, who has been unhittable in the early going. Let me re-phrase that, almost unhittable. He has allowed 6 hits against 48 batters faced for an opponent batting average of .125. In his first seven collegiate outings, Kevin sports a 2-0 record, with 4 saves. In 13.2 IP, he has allowed just the 6 hits, no earned runs, 1 walk and 20 strikeouts! In his most recent appearance, Culbert pitched 4 scoreless innings, yielding 2 hits, no walks and 7 K's, as Widener defeated Gwynedd-Mercy, 7-6, in 12 innings. Kevin was a Second-Team All-Catholic selection last season, and pitched 6 innings of shutout ball for O'Hara in a 6-0 win in the second round of last year's playoffs against Archbishop Carroll.

2008 HOMETOWN PHILLY AWARDS
Delaware Valley teams usually travel in February and early March to more baseball-friendly locales. Obviously, most of the destinations are in the south. Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas all host college tournaments and visitors from up north. One of the more popular places to play is Virginia. Ironically the first players honored this season are playing in Virginia.

(GERMANTOWN ACADEMY)
HT: 6-3      WT: 215        JUNIOR THIRD BASEMAN
JENKINTOWN, PA
Although he is currently at William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, Tyler played his first two seasons of college ball at Holy Cross in frosty Worcester, Massachusetts. Yeah, yeah, it’s pronounced Wooster. Maybe all of the championship fever from New England Nation has had an effect on speech patterns. Like we would refer to West Chester as Wester.
Anyway, Tyler transferred down south, and has been reunited with former Germantown Academy teammates, Pete Vernon and Sean Grieve, both senior lefties for the Tribe. Stampone made his presence felt right away, and in 14 games through March 9, was hitting .396, with a .476 OBP, 13 runs, 6 doubles and 4 steals. More importantly, his new team won their first six games, and posted an 11-3 record with a couple of close Colonial Athletic Association losses to James Madison University, and a 10-2 defeat at the hands of #2 North Carolina. After starting the season batting seventh, Tyler moved to the leadoff spot in game four, and has been there ever since for the College of Bill and Meg.

Hometown Philly's Top Rookie, First Month of the Season
ANTHONY CARDONA
WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
(CHESTNUT HILL ACADEMY)
HT: 5-10      WT: 175        FRESHMAN OUTFIELDER
LOWER GWYNEDD, PA
This rookie has gone country. Leaving the big city, Anthony quickly found a new home at Washington and Lee, in cozy Lexington, Virginia. The CHA grad started his collegiate career off with a bang, going 3-for-6, with 2 runs scored, and a solo home run. Anthony batted ninth in that season opener, but after hitting safely in his next 8 games, moved to the number two spot in the order. For the season, he is batting .426 in 13 games, with 19 runs and 12 RBI. In the field, he has played in left and right field with no miscues. Family and friends should probably not call or text Anthony for a few days, considering he just played 24 innings in a doubleheader this past Sunday. W&L won the first game in 16 innings, and had their nine-game winning streak snapped in the nightcap, dropping their record to 11-3. And now for a rarity on tedsilary.com, here is a history lesson: Washington and Lee is a private, liberal arts university that lies between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains. It certainly is a small school, as its enrollment of 2,200 includes undergrads and law school students, as well. It is the ninth oldest institute of higher learning in the nation. Coincidentally, Tyler Stampone’s William & Mary, is the second oldest school. Of course, you all know which is the oldest. It is revealed at the end of the posting. No flipping!
Honorable Mention:
Kevin Culbert, Widener fr RH (O’Hara) 1-0, 4 saves, 7.2 IP, 0 ER, 11 K
Ryan Kreider, Mercer County CC fr RH (Judge) 3 games, 1 save, 3 IP, 5 K

John Barr, Virginia fr OF (Germantown Acad.) see OK with Virginia Already
OK WITH VIRGINIA ALREADY
Player and Rookie of the Month playing in Virginia. Germantown’s Haneef Hill at Virginia State. Neumann's Billy Canady at Norfolk State. But perhaps the biggest splash being made in the Cavalier State is at the University of Virginia, where 25% of the starting position players hail from right here! Phil Gosselin has anchored the left side of the infield, alternating between shortstop and third, while carrying a .371 BA. John Barr has played mainly in left field sporting a .444 BA. On Feb. 28 against Coppin State, John went 2-for-5 with a triple, 3 runs, and 5 RBI. Their contributions have helped the Cavaliers reach a #12 national ranking. UVA won its first 11 games of the season, before dropping a pair of weekend contests against ACC foe NC State.
I KNOW YOU PEEKED
Oldest college? Washington and Lee is the ninth oldest college, Willie and Mary are the second oldest, and the Crimson of Harvard take the honor of the oldest school. What’s with New Englanders and pronunciation, anyway? Must be a real treat to hear them refer to parking their car in Harvard Yard.
