Randy's Weekly Honors, '10

Return to TedSilary.com Home Page

   Randy Seidman is a constant at Washington games and this year is again giving out college honors to Philly Guys playing college baseball. Very cool!  Randy graduated from Washington, which his two sons also attended. Randy is an award-winning producer of televised sporting events and now works for the Comcast Network, in addition to doing free-lance work for many of the major networks. His career highlight -- producing games, on back-to-back days, when Julius Erving scored his 30,000th point and Mike Schmidt slammed his 500th homer. He may be reached at rseidman9@aol.com.
   Check out Randy's awards from 2006 and 2007 and 2008 and 2009

2010 Hometown Philly All-Star & All-Rookie Selections
    The fifth annual Hometown Philly awards were once again announced in downtown Philadelphia during the 4th of July weekend celebration. There were 188 players on college baseball rosters hailing from three Philly high school leagues: Catholic, Public and Inter-Academic. These student-athletes represented 87 different colleges and universities.
   Special congratulations go out to all of the honorees and their devoted families, teammates, coaches, managers, trainers, and especially to the seniors. Once again, thanks to the daddy of tedsilary.com, the man himself, Ted Silary, for always touting "our guys." Please e-mail any omissions or mistakes to rseidman9@aol.com.

  SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT RECOGNITION
  CHRISTIAN WALKER, South Carolina fr 1B/3B (Kennedy-Kenrick)

    He was not the MVP of the 2010 College World Series, but without Christian Walker batting behind him in the four-hole, Jackie Bradley, Jr. would not have seen so many good pitches to hit. Kennedy-Kenrick's Walker and the highly touted Bradley, Jr (soph OF - Prince George, VA) combined to help lead the offense as the Gamecocks won their first-ever College World Series championship. In the best-of-three finals against UCLA, it was the Bruins starting pitchers that the network was in love with. But SC and their followers didn't go all the way out to Nebraska for nothing. Here are some similar numbers in the seven CWS games played: Bradley (MVP): .345 BA (10-29), 2 HR, 9 RBI - Walker: .414 BA (12-29), 2 HR, 5 RBI. A season ago, Christian Walker was selected in the 49th round of the 2009 MLB draft by the LA Dodgers. I think he might be moving up the board after this national showcase.

Christian Walker leads South Carolina to the College World Series Finals vs UCLA
Kennedy Kenrick's Christian Walker has continued his splendid play in the 2010 postseason. Throughout the Regionals and Super Regionals, Walker seemed to always come up with the key hit. Playing on an even bigger stage at Omaha's Rosenblatt Stadium, Christian has continued to shine at the College World Series. Coming out of the loser's bracket, the Gamecocks won four straight elimination games to reach the World Series Finals. The frosh certainly delivered. In five pressure-packed games last week, he hit a gaudy .400 (8-20), with 2 HR and 5 RBI.
WALKER'S WINNING WAYS
* Two hits, including a solo HR in one-run loss to Oklahoma, 4-3
* Bases loaded walk gives Gamecocks 10-0 lead, as they go on to eliminate the tournament's #1 seed, Arizona State, 11-4
* Three hits: 8th inning RBI single ties game 1-1, as Carolina beats and eliminates Oklahoma in 12 innings, 3-2

2010 Hometown Philly Final Stats
Stats are for the 2010 season for the Philadelphia Catholic, Inter/Ac and Public League alumni appearing on college baseball rosters. The three Philly leagues contributed 188 players representing 87 different colleges, both season highs in the five year history of the Hometown Philly Awards. Next week's final posting will include an update on Christian Walker and South Carolina in the College World Series finals. In addition, All-Star Teams and Players of the Year, and a partial listing of 2011 Hometown Philly freshmen will be listed. Please feel free to e-mail me any player you might know who will be playing college baseball next season, or any omissions or mistakes from this season's stats to rseidman9@aol.com.

Hometown Philly NCAA Division I Tournament Report

through June 17, 2010
South Carolina in the College World Series
    For the second consecutive season, a Hometown Philly player gained national headlines, helping to lead his team into the College World Series. Last season, it was Virginia's Phil Gosselin (Malvern Prep), who homered against phenom Stephen Strasburg, on the Cavs path to Omaha. This season, it was a true freshman whose exploits made him the "go-to guy" for media interviews. Of course, by now, if you are reading this, you know all about South Carolina fr 1B Christian Walker, who stole the show in the Myrtle Beach Super Regional against Coastal Carolina. Walker and his teammates are in Omaha, and are hoping to keep playing for the whole month of June.
    Virginia made its first-ever World Series appearance a season ago, but were denied a return visit, as they lost their Charlottesville Super Regional to Oklahoma. A recap of South Carolina and Virginia follows, along with the complete Hometown Philly 2010 Home Run List. Once the Gamecocks finish their season, stats will be posted for all of the area players. That will be followed with the final posting of the season featuring All-Hometown Philly selections, Player, Pitcher and Rookie of the Year selections, and more!

 SOUTH CAROLINA  (48-15)
 At Large Berth from the SEC
 Winner of Columbia Regional and Myrtle Beach Super Regional
   Although they entered the NCAA Tournament with just seven wins in their prior 13 games, once South Carolina reached the postseason, it has been a different story. They enter their ninth College World Series on a roll, winning the minimum number of games possible (5). After sweeping through the Columbia Regional, SC ousted Coastal Carolina with a pair of one-run victories. Coastal still leads the NCAA with its 55 wins this season.
    Kennedy-Kenrick's Christian Walker played a pivotal role in both wins. In Game 1 against Coastal, Walker opened the scoring with a sharp two-run single to left, allowing the Gamecocks to score three runs on just the one hit in the first inning. South Carolina would add another run in the second inning, and held on for a 4-3 win. Walker was an emotional leader in the game, and ESPN microphones picked up his scream when he chest-bumped reliever Matt Price, who had just escaped a bases-loaded, no-out situation, with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to end the 8th inning.
    Game 2 will be etched in Walker's memory forever. Here is the setup: bottom of the 8th ... South Carolina trailing 9-7 ... runners on 2nd and 3rd ... 2 outs ... a 1-2 count ... and BOOM - a 3-run shot! If Phil Gosselin's homer against Strasburg was "The Shot Heard 'Round the College Baseball World," then Walker's dramatic blast surely was "The Shot Heard 'Round Gamecock Nation." Christian was mobbed at home plate by his teammates, and that was followed by a 1-2-3 ninth inning by Price to preserve the win, and send South Carolina to their fourth World Series this decade (2002, 2003, 2004, 2010). Their first game will be against Oklahoma (49-16), which vanquished Virginia.

 VIRGINIA  (51-14)
 Automatic Bid as Atlantic Coast Conference Champions
 Winner of Charlottesville Regional, lost to Oklahoma in Super Regional
   Last year, they were Cinderella. This year, it became midnight for Virginia. The Cavaliers were able to sneak up on everybody in 2009, and advanced to within a few games of playing for the World Series championship. This season, UVA was no longer a secret, as they were the top-ranked team for most of the season, according to Baseball America. Virginia was taken to the limit in the regional, beating upstart St. John's for the championship. In the Super Regional against Oklahoma, Virginia won Game 1, but came up on the losing side in the final two games against the Sooners, ending the Cavs chance at a return to Omaha. But for a moment in the first game, it seemed like deja vu all over again. Phil Gosselin, fresh off being selected by the Atlanta Braves in the fifth round of the 2010 draft, showed that the Strasburg dinger was no fluke. Leading off the home first, Phil went deep on Oklahoma ace Michael Rocha, giving Virginia the early jump. With the home run, Phil also established a Cavaliers record for hits in a season with 96. He would homer again in Game 2 with a 3-for-5 performance, and would finish the season with an even 100 hits. Germantown Academy's John Barr was the DH, and went 3-for-8 in the series to finish the season with a gaudy .373 average.

Hometown Philly NCAA Division I Tournament Report & MLB Draft Recap
through June 10, 2010
     There were no major upsets in the D-I Tourney among the 16 regionals scattered around the country last weekend. Each regional consisted of four teams, hosted by the #1 seeded team, and played in a double-elimination format. Of the 16 winners advancing to the Super Regionals, the top-seeded team won 13 times, #2 seed won three times, #3 and #4 seeds were shut out. Two of the eight upcoming Super Regionals feature Hometown Philly players.

 VIRGINIA  (50-12)
 Automatic Bid as Atlantic Coast Conference Champions
 Winner of Charlottesville Regional, advance to Super Regional best-of-three series hosting Oklahoma (47-15)
 Charlottesville Regional: #1-seed and host Virginia, #2-Mississippi, #3-St. John's, #4-VCU
   A season ago, the Cavs had to travel out west, and beat Stephen Strasburg, among others, to advance to the Super Regionals. Last season's stepping-stone could become this season's reality, as the Cavs won their regional, and stayed home to do it. UVA beat VCU and last season's Super Regional opponent, Ole Miss. Advancing in the winner's bracket, the Cavs were upset by Big East champion St. John's, but came back to defeat the Red Storm in a rematch for the regional title.
    Versatile junior Phil Gosselin (Malvern Prep) continued to lead his Cavs to victory out of the leadoff spot. In four games played in the Regionals, Phil batted .353 (6-17), with a .450 OBP, 3 RBI, 3 R, 3 BB, 2 SB, DB. Phil's excellent season obviously excited the Atlanta Braves, who selected him in the 5th round of this season's Major League Draft. Another junior John Barr (Germantown Academy) went 6-for-12 in the four games, including a 4-for-4 performance in the win against Mississippi.
Charlottesville Super Regional in Charlottesville, VA for the best-of-three series vs Oklahoma:
Saturday, June 12 - 3pm  (ESPNU) ... Sun., June 13 - 4pm (ESPN) ... Mon., June 14 - 1 or 7pm, if necessary (ESPN2)
The Cavs record entering Saturday's opener is 50-12. At this point in their dream run of '09, they were 46-12-1.

 SOUTH CAROLINA  (46-15)
 At Large Berth from the SEC
 Winner of Columbia Regional, advance to Super Regional best-of-three series vs Coastal Carolina (55-8)
 Columbia Regional: #1-seed and host South Carolina, #2-Virginia Tech, #3-Citadel, #4-Bucknell
   Little more than a month ago on May 7, South Carolina visited Kentucky for a three-game SEC series. In the opener, SC overcame a 7-4 deficit thanks to the heroics of 1B Christian Walker (Kennedy-Kenrick). One of his three doubles tied the game 7-7, as the Gamecocks went on to win 13-9. Walker went 4-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored. At that point, South Carolina's record was 36-9, and they were the fourth ranked team in the nation. They looked like a lock to land one of the coveted eight top seeds in the NCAA Tournament, but finished the season on a down note, going 7-6, and losing both of its SEC tourney games. They did receive an at-large berth, and rebounded to win the Columbia Regional championship in three straight games, outscoring Bucknell, Citadel and Virginia Tech by a collective 38-11. Walker played the entire regional at first base. After an 0-for-5 opener vs Bucknell, Christian was instrumental in the next two wins with five hits in ten at bats, including an RBI double in each game. So dial the cable into ESPNU Saturday at noon to see Walker and the Gamecocks battle Big South champion Coastal Carolina (Doug Fleming, fr C - Penn Charter).
Myrtle Beach Super Regional in Myrtle Beach, SC for the best-of-three series vs Coastal Carolina:
Saturday, June 12 - Noon (ESPNU) ... Sun., June 13 - 1pm (ESPN) ... Mon., June 14 - 1 or 7pm, if necessary (ESPN2)

    Three other Hometown Philly teams qualified for the NCAA Regionals, but came away empty handed. The closest team to advance was North Carolina. Rider and Saint Louis each lost both of their games, and were eliminated.
 NORTH CAROLINA  (38-22)
 At Large Berth from the ACC
 Eliminated in Norman Regional
 Norman Regional: #1-seed and host Oklahoma, #2-California, #3-North Carolina, #4-Oral Roberts
    The Tar Heels lost out on a tiebreaker and did not participate in the ACC Tournament, but received an at-large bid to "June Jubilation" (lame analogy to March Madness). They were selected no doubt for their season's body of work. (By the way, how many times did "body of work" sneak into the conversation during March Madness? When did this all of a sudden become the default cliche for selection criteria?)
    In the regional, North Carolina posted a pasting of California in the opener, one of the few mini upsets on the tourney's first day. The Tar Heels suffered a one-run loss to Oklahoma in a winner's bracket matchup, and after an elimination game win against Oral Roberts, once again lost to Oklahoma by a run, ending their chance at reaching Omaha. Freshman 2B Tommy Coyle (Germantown Academy) saw limited duty in the regionals, going just one-for-nine, but chipped in with four walks, three runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base.
Note: UNC lost the tiebreaker to Boston College to qualify for the ACC Tournament. Speaking of BC, I know it is only one season, but it will go down in time as a real college classic. Below is my posting from last season's Austin Regional ...
Marathon Men
    Although no locals played in this game, it stills merits attention in this report. The top seed in the entire tournament belongs to the Texas Longhorns. When they squared off to face the Boston College Eagles last Saturday, little did they know they were about to enter the NCAA Record Book ... and The Twilight Zone. Words are not necessary.

   Rider indeed faced a difficult task in the 2010 Austin Regional. They were clobbered by a couple of nationally ranked teams, Texas (11-0 loss) and Rice (19-1). The Broncs finished with a school single-season record 36 wins.

   The Billikens won the A-10 title in four straight games beating Fordham, Xavier, and Charlotte twice. Entering the regionals with a seven-game winning streak, Saint Louis got the blues with an 11-2 loss to Louisville, and an 8-3 loss vs Illinois State. Louisville would advance through the winner's bracket, but lost twice to Vanderbilt, making the Cardinals one of the three top seeds (out of 16) not to advance.     This year's Major League draft had a Philadelphia flavor to it. How great was it that our own Phillies took a local for the first time ever in the first round? Germantown Friends' Jesse Biddle was the 27th player taken, and maybe Ruben Amaro and the Phils' brass might want to put his pitching career on hold, and put the kid into the #3-hole in the Phillies' batting order right now! Can't get much worse? The following is a list of Hometown Philly players selected in this year's draft.
  MAJOR LEAGUE DRAFT  .....  MAJOR LEAGUE DRAFT  .....  MAJOR LEAGUE DRAFT  .....  MAJOR LEAGUE DRAFT  .....  MAJOR LEAGUE DRAFT  .....  MAJOR LEAGUE DRAFT
    Four players were selected in the 50 rounds of the draft. It is quite possible that Virginia's All-ACC performer Phil Gosselin (Malvern Prep) could be winding up his collegiate career in the Division I tournament. Phil was selected in the 5th round by the Atlanta Braves as a second baseman, who will make a push to sign him. Phil was the 164th player taken overall. Keystone sr RHP Sean Murphy (North Catholic) was chosen in the 33rd round (995th overall) by the Oakland A's. With all of the depressing news of North shutting down, here is one small ray of sunshine for the students, players, alumni, and all of the North Catholic family to feel good about. Frankford High's Wander Nunez was selected with the first pick of the 36th round (1,076th) by the Washington Nationals. Wander played for Western Oklahoma State, which fell a few games shy of securing a National Junior College championship. The Phillies named Villanova reliever Mike Francisco (Malvern Prep) as their 45th round pick (1,371st overall). The 6'5" lefty was Nova's closer the past two seasons.

Draft Notes
* Washington Nationals top overall pick Bryce Harper played for little known College of Southern Nevada. Well, not so little known anymore. With all of the scouting eyeballs following Harper, his teammates became beneficiaries. Including Harper, a total of nine Coyotes were drafted, five of them coming in the first 11 rounds.
* The Ouch Department: East Carolina sr RF Devin Harris was picked by the San Fran Giants in the 48th round. Last season, Harris was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 8th round, but did not sign. LSU jr CF Chad Jones was originally drafted in 2007 in the 13th round by the Houston Astros, but did not sign. This season, he was taken in the 50th round.
* Mr. Irrelevant: It is quite an honor to be taken as the last pick in any draft, but to be last in baseball is something very special when you consider 30 teams with 50 rounds, and plenty of compensatory picks. The Yankees selection with the 1,525th overall pick and the last pick of the last round was Western Kentucky jr C James Rice. The other thing that sucks more than being the last player taken, is to be the next-to-last player taken!

Hometown Philly Tournament Update
through June 1, 2010

   Now that the NCAA Division I regional brackets are set, let's take a look and see which members of the 2010 Hometown Philly roster are still playing baseball. Following that will be a summary of participating players and teams in the D-II and D-III tournaments, as well as the National Junior College Tournaments.
  VIRGINIA  (47-11, 23-7 ACC)    Automatic Berth as ACC Champions
    Wow! What do the Cavs do for an encore? What an unexpected, exciting run they made in last season's tournament. Just to recap, UVA was slightly dissed and sent out west to the very competitive Irvine Regional, where they proceeded to hand San Diego State phenom Stephen Strasburg the only loss of his junior season. After that, the Cavs defeated then top-ranked UC-Irvine twice to advance to the Super Regional in Oxford, MS. After dropping game one to Ole Miss in the best-of-three-series, UVA won the next two games to advance to their first-ever College World Series. Arkansas ended Virginia's dream run with an 12-inning, 4 hour, 47 minute classic. Two locals who contributed to the 2009 dream season as sophomores, and also had outstanding junior seasons, are ready to go. Phil Gosselin (Malvern Prep) moved to the leadoff spot this season, and was the catalyst for UVA's great start, and #1 ranking for much of the season. Phil was a first team All-ACC selection, and who could forget the mammoth HR he hit off of a startled Strasburg last season in what was dubbed "The Shot Heard 'Round the College Baseball World?" Teammate John Barr (Germantown Academy) hit .361 this season to raise his three-year average to .328. Also on Virginia are a pair of freshmen who were also 2009 MLB draftees: Stephen Bruno (St. Joseph's Prep), and fr Robert Amaro (Penn Charter). UVA is the fifth overall seed in the tournament.
  Charlottesville Regional: #1-seed and host Virginia, #2-Mississippi, #3-St. John's, #4-VCU
  Friday, June 4 (4 pm): Virginia vs VCU ... Sat., June 5 vs Ole Miss/St. John's

  COASTAL CAROLINA  (51-7, 25-0 Big South)    Automatic Berth as Big South Champions
    The Chanticleers from Conway, SC finished with a 51-7 season record, and are the fourth overall seed in the tournament. Midway through the season, Coastal Carolina won 17 straight games, and 26 out of 27.
Hometown Philly: fr C Doug Fleming (Penn Charter)
  Myrtle Beach Regional: #1-seed and host Coastal Carolina, #2-Coll. of Charleston, #3-NC State, #4-Stony Brook
  Friday, June 4 (1 pm): Coastal Carolina vs Stony Brook ... Sat., June 5 vs Coll of Charleston/NC State

  NORTH CAROLINA  (36-20, 14-16 ACC)    At-Large Berth
    The Tar Heels are among eight ACC teams picked for the tournament, most ever for the conference. Freshman 2B Tommy Coyle (Germantown Academy) played in 54 of UNC's 56 games this season, starting 50 times. Tommy hit .292 with 13 stolen bases in 15 attempts.
  Norman Regional: #1-seed and host Oklahoma, #2-California, #3-North Carolina, #4-Oral Roberts
  Friday, June 4 (8 pm): North Carolina vs California ... Sat., June 5 vs Oklahoma/Oral Roberts

  SOUTH CAROLINA  (43-15, 21-9 SEC)    At-Large Berth

Hometown Philly's Player of the Week
for week ending May 16, 2010

JOHN MALLOY
La SALLE SR CF  (CONWELL-EGAN)
HT: 5-10     WT: 170       FAIRLESS HILLS, PA

 *  Last Week:      4 GP, .429 BA (9-21), HR, 7 RBI, 7 R, 3 DB, TR, BB
 * 2010 Season:  49 GP, .324 BA, 4 HR, 40 RBI, 39 R, 11 2B, 3 3B, 10/16 SB, .388 OBP, .994 FLD% (1 E/158 chances)
    John Malloy continues to set records as his college career begins to wind down. He is also helping to keep the Explorers in contention for the upcoming Atlantic 10 tournament. Last week was highlighted by his walk-off solo HR in the bottom of the eleventh in a 13-12 win against St. Bonaventure. He was 4-for-7 in the game, with 4 RBI, 3 runs, and a pair of doubles. John's first inning double was the 55th of his career, a new all-time La Salle record. John's 268 career hits (thru 5/20) are just five shy of setting a new school record. The weather conditions in Amherst, MA are favorable for the three-game series at UMass this weekend. If La Salle qualifies for the conference tournament, it would give Malloy some wiggle room to set the hits record.

HT: 6-2     WT: 196      COLLEGEVILLE, PA
 *  May 16 vs Clemson: Win, 8 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

    It has been a dismal Demon Deacons season down in Winston-Salem, NC. Despite their 6-22 ACC record (16-37 overall), there has been a shining star, and he is just a freshman. Tim Cooney's latest outing resulted in a Wake Forest win, enabling the Demon Deacons to win the series vs Clemson, just the second time they accomplished that in the last ten seasons. Although Tim's numbers for the season were not outstanding, he received plenty of experience in his freshman season, which will serve him well in the future in such a competitive conference.
Honorable Mention:

Hometown Philly's Player of the Week
for week ending May 9, 2010

SEAN SAVERIO

WIDENER SO C/DH (La SALLE HS)
HT: 6-0        Hometown: HORSHAM, PA
 *  Last Week:      5 GP, .444 BA (8-18), 3 HR, 10 RBI, 8 R, 3 DB, TR, .565 OBP
 * 2010 Season:  36 GP, .430 BA, 3 HR, 41 RBI, 41 R, 13 2B, 5 3B, 5/10 SB, .503 OBP, .991 FLD PCT (1 error)
    Sean Saverio's batting average has been well above .400 since the fifth game of the season. He had been doing it all for the Pride this season, driving in runs, getting on base, and playing excellent defense. Except he hadn't gone deep. With four HR in his freshman season, Saverio had none entering the Commonwealth Conference championship. After top-seeded Widener was upset by Messiah in the opening game, the Pride found themselves in the loser's bracket, now needing four straight wins to claim their first conference title since 1999. With Sean leading the way, Widener did indeed win four straight on their way to their seventh conference championship in school history. Saverio homered in each of the final three games, and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. The Pride will find out where they are headed during the selection show this Sunday, May 16.

    After being upset by Messiah in the Commonwealth Conference tournament opener, Widener coach Steve Carcarey needed a starting pitcher to step up and go deep into a game with quality innings. To take the crown, Widener would have to play, and win, four games in a span of 28 hours. Turning to his most reliable pitcher down the stretch, the coach was elated with Rick Kazigian's outing against Alvernia. Rick would go on to record his fourth consecutive victory, and went the complete nine innings in the process. The result was a 5-3 win against Alvernia, that kept Widener in the tourney. By the way, entering the game, Alvernia's starting pitcher, Shane Zellers (Wiconisco, PA) was 8-0, with a 1.26 ERA. Taking the loss and yielding four earned runs in 7.1 innings, Zellers' postgame stats were an 8-1 record, and a 1.66 ERA.

HT: 6-0       WT: 210       LIMERICK, PA

      His freshman season has been one of ups and downs. Starting off with a bang in his collegiate career with the South Carolina Gamecocks, Christian Walker was showing why he was considered the top high school player in Pennsylvania, and the 88th best in the country, according to PG Crosschecker. In the season-opening three game sweep vs Duquesne in mid-February, Walker homered in each of his first two games, and finished the week 8-for-14 (.571), with seven RBI and five runs. But then the swoon came, with only four hits in his next 37 at bats (.108). He was dropped from the starting lineup and it took almost two months to play his way back in. However, in his last 8 games, Christian is batting .581 (18-31). Last week he homered at Kentucky in one game, and tied a school record with three doubles in another game. South Carolina entered the week as the #4 team in the country, but after dropping two of three on the road at Kentucky, they have fallen to #7.

Hometown Philly's Player of the Week
for week ending May 2, 2010

ESTEBAN MELETICHE

KEYSTONE SO 2B (FRANKFORD)
HT: 5-11       WT: 175       PHILADELPHIA, PA
 *  Last Week:      5 GP, .476 BA (10-21), 10 RBI, 9 R, 4 SB, 3 2B, 2 SF, HBP
 * 2010 Season:  30 GP, .451 BA, 4 HR, 32 RBI, 39 R, 14 2B, 3 3B, 12/14 SB, .522 OBP
    Perhaps Esteban Meletiche might want to skip the first few weeks of 2011, if he returns for his junior season. If he does not turn pro (hoping to be selected in the June MLB draft), and returns to La Plume, PA, Meletiche would try to avoid the slow starts encountered as a freshman and sophomore. His first two seasons were mirror images. He really picked up the pace in both midseasons, and finished on fire as he led his teammates into the conference tournament. Starting this season, "Shortie" hit a very respectable .350 (14-40), but went hitless in four of his first eleven games. However, since that point, he collected hits in 18 of his final 19 games, for a .516 average (32-62). Last week, Esteban hit safely in all five games, with ten hits, and four multi-hit games, as the Giants went 4-1. Their only loss was a near-upset on the road at Divisio
