Every so often, we'll publish photos of people in
or around the game as a way
of providing recognition. If you see Ted on the trail and think someone's
photo,
even yours, deserves to be posted on www.tedsilary.com,
speak up.

Mayor Street tosses up the ceremonial first ball in the All-Star
Labor Classic. The jumpers are Charron Fisher
(L) and John Allen.

Part of Veterans Stadium was removed to make the implosion go
easier. This shot was taken March 20, a
day beforehand.

Gratz star Mark Tyndale is interviewed by CN8 after announcing his
decision to
attend Temple.

Mark has just finished making his comments. His father, Mark Sr.,
and Leonard Conyer, a family friend
and grandfather figure, are also visible at the table. Gratz coach Leonard Poole is
clapping in the back.
Gratz junior Abdullah Moon is at left. The trophies are for the Pub title and title game
MVP.

On 3/7, Basketball Hall of Fame member Paul
Arizin ('46) was inducted into La Salle High's HOF.
At left is Scott Wolpert ('84), president of the
Alumni Association. As is rather well known among
"oldheads" (smile), Paul was cut all four years
while at La Salle and then became an all-timer at
Villanova and in the NBA with the old Phila.
Warriors.

Guys named John Griffin have been pretty good to coach
Speedy Morris. Junior won two titles for him at SJ Prep.
Senior won two for him at Roman.

The happy Hawks.

The CL title was the eighth for Speedy Morris (two at
SJ Prep, six at Roman) and ninth total (one at Penn
Charter) as a high school coach. That's his lucky baby
blue sweater.

The victorious Simon Gratz Bulldogs.

These five Wood players, all members of the rotation, are products
of the same grade school, Assumption, in Feasterville.
L to R -- Mike Piselli, John Gwiazdowski, Corey Filer, Brian Klumpp and Tim Walters.
(Thank you to Mike's mother, Kathy,
for providing the photo.)

La Salle franchise Nick Shattuck (right) was unable to play
vs. SJ Prep in a CL semifinal 3/3 due to an ankle injury.
In the foreground is the legendary Thomas "Hockey Puck"
McKenna, who denied any responsibility (smile).

La Salle's student rooters, with a babe or three mixed in. Jack
Crouse informs me that the girl in front to the left is
Courtney Hogan, sister of basketball-FB player Brian Hogan. Jack says she's very popular
and a staunch supporter
of La Salle athletics. Brian, by the way, is in the picture of Nick Shattuck, sitting in
front of Nick.
SJ Prep's Chris Clark approaches Colin Fitzgerald (34).

Dougherty's Tim Smith plays keepaway with Neumann's Richard
"Tabby"
Cunningham in CL semi 3/2.

After the Cardinals' 66-62 win is assured, Kyle Lowry points as
happy subs come onto
the floor.

The ball is loose and the face of SJ Prep's Corey
O'Rourke is contorted. Behind is West's Derrell
Hand.

Neumann's crowd.

The immediate aftermath of Dougherty's 66-63, double-OT win over
Wood in a CL quarterfinal 2/27.
Dougherty's subs rush the floor. A Wood player can't bear to watch.

In the other quarterfinal, Ryan's Joe Zeglinski shoots over La
Salle's
Mike Stanton (33) and Kevin Ihlein (31).

Wood's Matt Spadafora moves past North's Sean Thomson in
pre-playoff 2/25. Wood won,
70-55, for the first postseason victory in school history.

The Vikings were mighty happy after the win. Among the celebrants
were Matt Spadafora (second
from L), Tim Walters (third from L), Brian Klumpp (fourth from L) and Mike Piselli (black
bushy
hair, middle). Visible in the back near the wall is Corey Filer.

The Prep students were out in force for the showdown vs. Roman,
2/21. Prep won, 56-47, to take first in
Catholic South.

At halftime, FB star Matt Parkhurst hit a halfcourt shot to win
free lunches for a week.

Roman's cheerleaders followed up Matt's shot with an equally impressive performance.

Check out this photo of the Phila. Patriots provided by Sean
Singletary's mother, Jacqueline . . .
This 14-and-under team fared well in the national AAU tourney in the summer of
2000.
Front, L to R -- Kyle Lowry (Dougherty), Jared Black (SJ Prep), Zack Zeglinski
(Penn Charter), Joe
Clancy (Ryan, currently not playing) and Tim Smith (Dougherty).
Back, L to R -- coach John Zeglinski, assistant Shawn Smith, Sean Singletary (PC),
John Griffin (SJ
Prep), Shane Clark (Dougherty), John King (Judge), Charron Fisher (Roman), assistant John
Griffin,
assistant Rick Ferraiolo.

North Catholic's seniors and parents were honored 2/20 before the
game vs. Wood. L to R -- Paul
Chladek, Ryan Davis, Sean Thomson and Chalie Evans.

North's Jeremy Coombs maneuvers between Wood's John Gwiazdowski
(hand upraised) and
Matt Spadafora.

At halftime, North's student rooters moved closer to Wood's for
heckling purposes. Both staircases
were pretty much filled with spectators.

Anthony Morrison displays his glee after U. City's 57-47 win at
Olney 2/19 in a Public
League quarterfinal. The Jaguars are killing time while waiting to head outside
and board
the team bus. Morrison dinged his ankle; that's why it's elevated. (Sorry this photo
is so dark.)

Olney's managers: Shavar Sizer (L, stats) and Gregory
"Ham" Phillips (scorebook). It was
fun watching games with them this season. They were competent and knowledgeable.
Best
of luck, guys!

Roxborough's Laiya Skinner has a smile for everyone.
And she has taught our man Bill Wettstein everything
he knows about basketball (smile).

The Gratz managers wanted a new picture and, phew, can they be
persistent! (smile)
In front is Jessica Johnson (Virginia State). Right behind is Ciana Brown
(Villanova).
Krystal McCrimmon intends to enter the medical field.

Gratz' Matthew Walden jams over Mansion's
John Brooks.

On 2/16, Kennedy-Kenrick's Amarildo Matos protects the ball from
West Catholic's Rob
Latimer. Matos had 32 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists in a 90-83 loss.

Wood's Corey Filer shoots vs. Ryan in
game played 2/15. There's just a hint of
the ball at the top of the photo. Hey, if
you want professional quality photos, buy a
newspaper (smile).

La Salle junior Jack "Jack in the Box" Crouse, the
best-dressed stat man on the "Pub" scene. Notice
the tie is still in place (smile).

On 2/11, the Bodine Ambassadors beat Swenson, 79-76, to terminate
a 69-game, 6-season Public League
losing streak. The guys were a shade happy (smile). Jawaan Montgomery, who had a triple
double, can
be seen directly behind No. 21, Norman Hamilton. The head of the other
consistent star, Eric Pendleton,
can be seen directly to Montgomery's right (well, to the left in the picture.)

In this shot, Montgomery is over the right shoulder of Tyree
Griffin (31) and Pendleton is the first
guy in the front group, next to Akeem Clark (33).

The celebration is on as players mingle with fans.

Just in case the day turned out to be historic, I took a photo of
the opening jump ball.
The 23s are Bodine's Kason Chishimba and Swenson's Kobina
Anderson. Standing
nearby are Bodine's Kaiem Frink and Swenson's Emilio Pabon. The ref is Paul
Graham, father of ex-NBA player Paul "Snoop" Graham (Olney/Franklin).

E&S celebrates its basketball history. The retired
"jerseys" of Michael Anderson, Lynn Greer, Will Chavis and
John Cox are painted on the walls.

Well, the centering is a little off, but . . . E&S' Tramaine Jackson shoots a jumper.

The ball's going through the hoop and one guy is on
the floor. FLC at Mansion on 2/5.
(Photos by Bill Wettstein.)

Eight guys are awaiting the result of a shot.

Members of Neumann's "Cove." The picture would include a
few more guys at the top, but one of
them made an obscene gesture. Maybe he thought I was from the Inquirer (smile).

West Philly's Chris Williams makes a move past King's Ricardo
Laing on 2/6 at West. The
Speedboys were still wearing their old uniforms.

Roman QB Andre Sloan-El, who's also a basketball player, signs his
scholarship papers to Minnesota 2/4 in the
school library. Coach Jim Murphy and Andre's parents look on.

O'Hara RB Anthony Heygood signs his papers to attend Purdue as
family members look
on. He doesn't play b-ball, but he has probably attended a game or two (smile).

SJ Prep's Chris Clark hits a free throw vs. Roman 2/3 at Phila.
Univ.
as coach Speedy Morris, wearing his lucky light blue sweater,
looks on.

Lincoln's Malik Alvin shoots over Olney's
Andrew Jerry in game played 2/3.

Sean Thomson has just nailed a shot for North Catholic vs. Ryan.

gone through the net. Notice the fans sitting on the steps in North's basement
gym.

North's Chalie Evans looks to make a move.

Penn Charter's Sean Singletary sizes up Dougherty's Kyle Lowry.

his award to teammate Shane Clark.

Gratz' Mark Tyndale and GA's Ryan Ayers were Game 1 MVPs.
GA's Brian Grimes catches a pass from Joe Gill (left).

Sean Singletary plays keepaway from GA's Kirk Jones as third quarter winds down.

There wasn't an inch to be had when Penn Charter hosted Gtn.
Academy on 1/30. Here, Ryan
Ayers looks to pass.

Mike Kearney sets a pick on Neumann's Mike Payne as Clark
steams past.

Before a game vs. Neumann on 1/30, SJ Prep guard Chris Clark was
honored for
having surpassed 1,000 career points. His mom, LaVonne, is at the left of the
front
row. His uncle, Dana, an all-timer at Olney and Cheyney, is standing nearby. At the
extreme right is FB star Matt Parkhurst, who is leading the student
rooters.

Two of the all-time coaching legends were in attendance 1/29 at
the
Gratz-Bartram game. At right is Temple coach John Chaney, who earned win
No. 700 the night before. At left is Temple assistant Bill Ellerbee, who
experienced megasuccess at Gratz. Chaney also was the coach at Gratz.

Gratz' Mark Tyndale is pounded on a layup attempt.

Gratz' Mark Tyndale rebounds in front of Chris Seaborn (21) as
Jason
Hickenbottom tries to stay out of the way.

Dougherty's Kyle Lowry shoots a free throw 1/25 vs. La Salle.

La Salle's student rooters (with some girlfriends mixed in). Jack
"In the Box" Crouse is second from the right
in the third row (looking to the left at stat boy Mike Grant).

People had to squeeze in everywhere. La Salle AD Tony Resch (arms
folded, gray sweatshirt,
far left) monitors the student section. Sitting on the floor nearby is Daily News
photographer
George Miller.

The legendary Joe Donahue, an assistant at SJ Prep, keeps
statistics during the game on a computer.
Here, at halftime of the SJ Prep-Bonner game, he's trying to get his printer to
work. It didn't go well.

Franklin's Anwar Rascoe receives a post-game hug from his
2-year-old
sister, Lashaya.
The E&S managers deserve their own shot, right?
L to R -- Shalonda Spruill, Anica Crawley, Jamila Griggs, Lenisha Edge,
Phylicia Turner.

Germantown's Ivan Evans shoots over Frankford's Ervin Hook (20) on 1/20.

Wood's Matt Spadafora tries to protect the ball from Ryan's Joe
Zeglinski in game played 1/19.

Dennis Hilller (L) and Jon Doyle, two members of Judge's 1998 CL
title
squad, were in attendance 1/18 at the La Salle game. Both just returned
from
proudly serving their country in Iraq -- Dennis in the Navy, Jon in the
Marines. We thank them for their bravery and sense of duty.

Senior guard Brian Hogan, also a FB star, has been lost to La
Salle
due to torn knee ligaments and is now helping with stats. But in
the
really big news where this photo is concerned (smile): TedSilary.com
reporter Jack "In the Box" Crouse is the guy past Brian in the
Eagles
jersey.

Episcopal's Joe Rosati contests a shot by Gtn. Academy's Andrew
Ott.

Again, Ott is on offense and Rosati is playing defense. (Photo by Kristen)

La Salle assistant John Gallagher (L) and Dave Pauley, head coach
at the
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (phew, say that fast once) were
among
the spectators Jan. 16 when West Catholic hosted SJ Prep. Dave and Huck
have
gotten into a running playful feud over whether Ridley, Dave's alma mater,
could
make the playoffs in CL North. Huck keeps saying no. Dave
says Huck really
works for www.getaclue.com. If they come to blows,
Ted will step in. This photo
was snapped by Amauro. I wonder if this damn camera has a reduce red-eye
function?

REID MY LIPS . . . LEAVE ME ALONE
Andy Reid made a special visit to the DN sports department on
Thursday 1/15 to make sure we were giving proper coverage to the
Eagles. Layout man Drew McQuade, not a fan of authority figures,
refused to acknowledge Reid's presence. He wouldn't even buy
him a donut.

Andre Sloan-El launches a free throw vs. West Catholic on Monday
night, Jan. 12.
Yes, NIGHT. Roman is now starting its weekday varsity games at 6:30 p.m.

Roman's Raymond "Doodles" Sims brings up the ball as
West's Rob
Latimer prepares to dig in.

FB player Quindell Christmas is a legendary scorekeeper for
Dougherty's
basketball team. In S.C. at holiday time, he even served as an unofficial
assistant coach.

People were EVERYWHERE when Gtn. Academy hosted Penn Charter on
1/9. Note the sittees on the far side and standees in the corner and along the
baseline. PC won, 56-53.

GA coach Jim Fenerty emphatically makes a point. Our man
"ZB" can be seen at
bottom right in the blue shirt! (smile)

Gratz' Mark Tyndale tries to fight around a pick being set by
Dobbins'
Ahkieme McClendon.

Gratz' managers are still the best! L to R -- Ciana Brown, Krystal
McCrimmon, Jessica
Johnson. Ciana is bound for Villanova and intends to be a manager for coach
Jay Wright.

In a CL South opener, Neumann's Richard "Tabby"
Cunningham tries to
maintain control as SJ Prep's Chris Clark defends.

In Wildwood, N.J., on 12/29, Bartram's Tywain McKee spins and
looks to pass
to Marquise Carrington. Chris Seaborn is set up in the high post. The
opponent
is Winslow Twp (N.J.).

Ted and daughter Kristen, Christmas 2003.

Kevin, Ted's son, opens a present.

SJ Prep's John Griffin, guarded by Episcopal's Wayne Ellington,
passes to Reggie Redding on 12/23 at Saint Joseph's Univ.
John Griffin defends as Brian Shanahan prepares to inbound and
Gerald Henderson breaks to catch the pass. (Contrary to popular
belief, that is not Ted's lunch on the table -- smile.)

SJ Prep's Mike Kearney tries to defend Penn Charter's
Rob
Kurz in the low post. Action took place 12/20 in the classic
at the Palestra.
PC's Sean Singletary is defending SJ Prep's John Griffin and the referee is counting.

West's Derrell Hand can't keep the ball from going out
of bounds.

La Salle guys have the same problem.

Vincent Tucker-Hall (1) and
Richard Crawford (3) are the
leaders for Swenson, a new
Pub member.

Lamberton played its first game in its new home, Shepard RC, at 57th and
Haverford, on 12/16 vs. Bodine. This is where Wilt Chamberlain played as
a youth (it was called Haddington, then) and this mural is on the wall at the
back of the stage.

Lamberton's Harold Hall drives the left baseline against
Bodine's Tyree Ezell.
