North's Stan Orzechowski hit two homers for the Catholic League
6/16 in Carpenter Cup win over
Delaware South. They produced five RBI. Here, after the game, DN photographer Jessica
Griffin is
taking Stan's photo.

Northeast grad Scott Hunter, a first team All-City player in
baseball and football, has completed
his pro baseball career and is now a scouting supervisor for the Mets. We wish Scott all
the best.
He was at Penn to scout the Carpenter Cup. That's the Pub team in the
background. Scott owns
the only homer, over the 371-foot sign in left-center at the Vet, by a Pub player in the
CC.

Pre-game introductions for the PL final on 6/3. Frankford beat Northeast, 6-4.

At this point, everybody still loves everybody (smile).

Joe Farina, at his release point.

Farina has already lost his hat and the party is. No. 12 is SS
Cory Shaeffer. No. 7 is 1B Geoff
Minetola. No. 5 is DH Ramon Reyes (good quickness off the bench!). No. 18
is 2B Richard
Jimenez. No. 14, barely visible behind Shaeffer, is 3B Jeff Newman. C Carlos Rosado is to
Farina's right, trying to lift him.

Everybody again loves everybody.

Shaeffer and Farina are front and center with the cup. (Sorry about cutting off a few guys' heads.)

One more celebration pic for the road.

Carroll's players warm up on FB field at La Salle University before the resumption of play 6/3 in CL title game.
Despite a 7-3 deficit, Ryan's players remained alive during the home seventh.

Brandon Gribbin is hoisted after final out by 1B Colin McHale. 3B
Brian Rorick and C Matt
Lisowski are about to join the fun. Running in from RF is Frank McDonnell, who
caught a liner
for the final out.

Coach Fran Murphy poses with commissioner Gene Otto (center) and moderator John Mooney.

Mugging for the assorted cameras.

The seniors. Brandon Gribbin (left) had to get it together (smile).

As his brother, Chris, looks on, Ryan's Tom Dolan does some
soft-toss hitting
before the CL title game 6/2.

Carroll starting OF Matt Smith was unavailable due to a partially
torn
Achilles tendon, suffered in the semis. He's sitting with Joe O'Shea.

John Mooney (hands clasped), former coach at St. James and AD at
Bonner, as well
as the CL's baseball moderator, received a medal before the game celebrating the
50th
anniversary of his graduation from then La Salle College. Getting ready to present
the
medal is Brother John Kane, who supervises academic counseling for La Salle's
athletes.
John Mooney has been in the Catholic school system for 50 years. He's retiring.

Carroll's John George takes a pitch. Catcher is Nick DiEnno. Ump is Paul Fricker.

Ryan's Kyle Unger heads back to 1B on pickoff as Colin McHale
awaits throw. Ump is
Carlos Deno.

Dolan declines to offer at a high fastball. Catcher is Matt Lisowski.
Chief umpire Gene Otto (center, looking to his right) confers with
other umps and
assorted dignitaries (smile) after rain soaked the field. The game will be completed
at noon tomorrow.

The umpires and teams stand at attention before the Carroll/Conwell-Egan semifinal 5/29 at La Salle Univ.
C-E's Brian Herman throws the first pitch to Carroll's Dave
Puliti. The catcher is Matt Fischer. The plate
ump is Paul Fricker.

Carroll's Brian Rorick is ready to break for home as Herman delivers.

Matt Burns takes a hack for Conwell-Egan. The catcher is Matt Lisowski.

Coach Fran Murphy has a post-game talk with the victorious Patriots.

In game two, Ryan 1B Rob Fisher awaits the throw as O'Hara's Matt
Catania
returns to the bag.

Ryan pitcher Mike Szelagowski. The second baseman is Shawn Costello.

Tom Dolan pitched the seventh. The shortstop is Anthony Carter.

Dolan gloves it up with Nick DiEnno as Ed Kovacs trots in to join the party.

Frankford-Washington semifinal May 27 at La
Salle Univ. At right is Ken Radziak, who placed third in the Best Teammate 2004
competition.

The players stand at attention for the National Anthem.

Not much action in this photo, right? Correct! But check out the
fashion
statement of Frankford's Carlos Rosado. The bottoms of his pants are
tucked under his spikes. Cool, huh? The first baseman is Eric "Son of
Ramblings" Seidman. The ump is Joe Lieberman, whose son, Ivan, was
working at third.
Justin Presley fakes a bunt against Joe Farina. (Ball is near Presley's head).
Rosado is
the catcher. Jim Scott is the plate ump. Bob Wolf is the 2B ump.

Farina winds and Central's players arrive for the second game of the doubleheader.

In game No. 2, Northeast sr. LH Andrew Lihotz struck out 14 in a
2-1 win. He also
scored the winning run.

This pickoff throw squirted away from 1B Chris McNamee and Craig
Baumbach
moved up to second.

Coach Sam Feldman (46) gathers his squad in the dugout after the
exciting win. Joe Cross, who placed second
in our Best Teammate 2004 competition, is howling at the upper left (smile).

Well before a second-round CL playoff on 5/26, Carroll coach
Fran Murphy (L), SJ Prep coach Chris Rupertus and Gene Otto,
chief of umpires, met to discuss a rules interpretation.

The men in blue, L to R: Carlos Deno, Gene Otto, Bill Haines and Paul Fricker.

The pitch is en route and Carroll's Brian Rorick is pulling the
trigger. So is the on-deck hitter,
Colin McHale. (He walked four times). Paul Yantosh is the catcher.

Joe McElwee uncorks a pitch. The second baseman is Steve
Vassalotti. That's Central High in
the background.

Carroll's Colin McHale reaches for pickoff throw as Bobby Muth dives back to the bag.

It's all over but the handshakes. And even some of them are over.

You can never have enough catchers. Here, La Salle assistant Ed
Bongard puts three guys through
their pre-game paces. Bill Warrender is at left. The two on the right are Jeff
Kanof (26) and Nick
Brechbill. La Salle won the first-round playoff, 22-8, on 5/25.
Matt Malloy, who wound up winning the Best Teammate
2004 contest once the last ballot was received Tuesday
night, guzzles some pre-game water.

La Salle soph Matt Zielinski delivers.

Craig Kubis hits for North as his teammates look on with
anticipation. Jeff Kanof is the catcher;
Rob Miller the umpire.

O'Hara's players came to Philly U. to watch part of the game. They thought the grass was a beach (smile).

North CF Stan Orzechowski (17) was excellent in defeat with a
double, triple and
homer for two RBI.

Central coach Bob Barthelmeh throws BP before the Lancers' 7-6 win
over
Edison in a PL quarterfinal 5/20.
Andrew Reynolds, the guy on the right, is nicknamed "Harry
Potter." But Nick
DeLeo can also make a strong case for having that handle. When I was getting
ready to take the picture, Nick said, "I'm taking off my glasses." I said.
"You
can't do that. That's the point." (smile)

Jonathan "Loco" Gonzalez uncorks for Edison. Others in
photo: runner Joe Gallagher, umpire
Warren Gillis and shortstop Javier Lafuente.
Central's Brandon Watson. SS Andrew "Harry
Potter" Reynolds later won in relief.

Brandon Watson returns to mound as Danny Camacho (middle, arm
raised) accepts congrats
after slamming a solo homer. The ball entered the trees pretty much above where
you can see
Watson's head in this photo.

Reynolds and catcher Ron Daukaus exchange a hug after the game's
final out,
a screaming liner to leftfielder Kurt Haberle. (Sorry this isn't exactly crystal
clear -- smile.)

Penn Charter frosh Mark Adzick delivers a pitch to Gtn. Academy C
Alex Kaplan on 5/18.
GA won, 14-0, to clinch the Inter-Ac title.

A look toward the plate. The hitter is PC's R.J. Hollinshead.

Four PC players wait out an 18-minute rain delay on a bench
outside the school library. L to R --Mark Adzick, R.J.
Hollinshead, Sam/Sammy Zeglinski and Zack Zeglinski.
Ace writer Ed "Special Ed" Morrone was on deck when
Matt
Bruderek finished a three-hitter.
The post-game handshakes.

The happy Patriots.

Josh "Eggie" Williams pitched for Kensington vs. GAMP in
a
9-4 loss on 5/17. His teammates were guilty of nine errors in
the round-of-16 playoff.

During a rain delay that halted play for 63 minutes, the teams
passed the time together under the bridge in the background. Here
they're returning to the field. The bridge is over 7th Street, above Packer.

John Sandefur, of the South Philly Sabres organization, was a whiz
getting the field ready for the
game to resume. He was helped by Anthony Turchi. That's the Walt Whitman Bridge in the
upper left.

Carroll jr. RH Brian Rorick uncorks vs. O'Hara on 5/14. The 2B
is John George.

Part of the crowd. At least 150 people were in attendance.

Yes, that's a helicopter. It was actually close to the field and briefly held up play.

O'Hara's Paul Titchenell arrives at home after his two-run HR in
the eighth inning. No.
29 is Don Werner, who was on base via a walk. Ump Carlos Deno watches to
make sure
Titchenell touches the plate.

Olney beat Mastbaum, 6-3, on 5/13 to win the Pub Division B title. The happy Trojans surround coach Barry Strube.

Strube has just been doused with a bucket of water.

Mastbaum pitcher Jose Colon, as viewed through a hole in the wooden backstop.

Mastbaum's Sherrod Evers and Elsa
Alicea, mother of Luis Alicea. Elsa
has trouble saying "Sherrod" and
instead calls him "Sheet Rock." It's
catching on and Sheet Rock likes it.

Freshman Felix Madera got the win for Olney, allowing four hits
and
striking out nine.

A conventional look at Jose Colon.

Third base coach Jon Cross, a lawyer, was mainly responsible for
helping six Gtn. Academy players
sign with D-I programs.

Penn Charter coach Rick Mellor (24) speaks with his team after 9-0
loss. Ed "Special Ed" Morrone (red
hair), of website writing fame, listens somewhat intently (smile). At right is pitching
coach Gerry Sasse.

Overbrook's Ron Bubas arrives at home after slamming a LONG home
run vs. Franklin Towne Charter
on 5/10. The ball entered the trees in left-center at approximately the exact upper
right-hand corner of
this photo. About 40 feet high!

'Brook has only 11 players. Robert McCatty (L) is the DH and
scorekeeper. Redmond Thomas also sees time at DH.
These are some photos from O'Hara-NC sent to us by Delane
Rouse of www.contrastphotography.com.

North SS Tim Wallace throws to first.

North's Mike Berretta throws to 1B Ed Jaskowiak. O'Hara's Steve Cook dives back.

O'Hara submariner Kyle Reynolds.

Jerry Kleger (L) and Bill Hall umpired the Washington-Central game
on 5/6.
Jerry coached Franklin to the PL title in 1983. Bill is heavily involved in
supporting the Carpenter Cup.

Some of Washington's subs get down and dirty while watching the
game. The man in the white hat is
Randy Seidman of "Randy's Ramblings." The players, L to R, are Anthony O'Donell,
Anthony Aleman,
Mike Werb and Mike Kline.

O'Hara's Steve Cook crosses home after starting game vs. Bonner
with a homer on 5/4. At left,
shooting for the Daily News as a stringer, is Brad Bower.

Bonner kids hang out behind the centerfield fence. They had a grill and even set up a baby pool.

O'Hara coach Frank Allison is back in action after being sidelined
in '03 due to severe head
injuries suffered in a fall. He's still battling and everyone wishes him well.

Bonner's Kevin Ward heads for home after slamming a two-run homer off the third floor of Bonner's building.

There is an actual visiting bench at La Salle, but things are
informal. North's players are spread out on
the hill for game 4/30. TedSilary.com correspondent Pat "The Stat" Gordon is at
the extreme right,
wearing a white hat.

La Salle legend Matt "Smurf/Stump" Malloy leads off first base. The first baseman is Ed Jaskowiak.

Ryan's Mike Szelagowski pitched a shutout vs. Conwell-Egan on
4/29.
He fanned 11 and allowed six hits (three of the infield variety).
C-E CF Tim Carroll takes a pitch. The catcher is Nick DiEnno.

C-E's Matt Burns awaits a pitch as Joe Jordan leads off third.
Burns grounded to 3B Ed Kovacs, who
threw home to Nick DiEnno for the catch-and-tag on Jordan.

All of the Inter-Ac fields are nice, but Chestnut Hill Academy's
might be the most pleasing to the eye.
That's the school in the background, across Willow Grove Ave. Here, Gtn.
Academy's Sean Grieve is
pitching to CHA's Anthony Biello.

CHA's Anthony Cafagna is a very
promising freshman.

Ex-Phillies pitcher Tyler Green is an assistant to GA coach Craig
Conlin.
The brains behind the GA operation: Zach Berman, L, of ZB's
Zone
fame during basketball season, and Brett Greenberg, president of
the student body.

SJ Prep's Bobby Muth takes a lead at 1B. The first baseman is
Neumann's Jon Brady. Notice the guys
at the table along the fence. They play music during the game.
Prep's John Coury, son of principal Michael Coury, delivers
a pitch vs. Neumann.

Backup catcher Anthony Miller, one of the driving forces behind
Neumann's
"The Cove" rooting section at basketball games, poses with a good-luck bear
belonging to sr. RHP Antonio Cima.

Citizens Bank Park is not the only baseball venue with a view of
the Center
City skyline, baby! Jamil Phillips pitches for Dobbins vs. Germantown at
29th
and Chalmers on 4/20. The 2B is Kenny Robinson.

Anthony Cuffie waits his turn to bat and, yes, that's a cemetery
right
behind him. Notice the shirt. Some of G-town's guys don't have uniform
tops. Anthony put on his No. 13 and G for Germantown with adhesive
tape. Only in the Pub! If anyone out there would like to purchase a set of
tops for the Bears, I'm sure it would be appreciated.

Junior RHP Luis Alicea posted a two-hitter to lead Mastbaum
past Fels, 11-1, on 4/19.

This is Mastbaum RF Luis Ortiz. His
nickname is "Teeth". At first he didn't
want his picture taken, but his teammates
were pressuring him and he finally
gave in (smile).

Mastbaum's 4 seniors -- Jose "Tito" Colon, Wilson Ribot, Joel Rodriguez, Alex "Mouse" Norat.

Northeast's Andrew Lihotz delivers a pitch to Frankford's Ramon
Reyes in 4/17 game.
Frankford won, 5-2.

Soph Seth Shapiro is barely visible, facing teammates, as he
arrives at home plate after
smacking a two-run homer.

Joe Farina pitches to Brandon O'Malley.

Sr. RH Kyle Whalen delivers the first pitch in the history of West
Catholic's
new Alumni Field, at 46th and Fairmount. Burrs lost to Dougherty, 4-0.

The first batter was 3B Mike Wood. He's about to toss his bat
because he thinks he has just taken ball four.
The pitch was called a strike. He then collected the field's first hit on a groundball
single to right. The catcher
is Steve Roman.

Part of what I've dubbed The Mesh Monster. The mesh surrounds the
entire outfield. It's about
40 feet high from the corners to about midway to dead center. Balls going over it are
only a
ground-rule double. If you clear the mesh from right-center and left-center to dead
center, it's a
homer. It's only 215 feet down each line! Can't be more than 300 to dead center.

Junior righthander Mike McCann hurled a shutout. That's the
intersection of 46th and
Fairmount beyond centerfield. He allowed four hits, two on infield rollers. The CF is Luke
Ashenbrenner.
