Eastern Regional
Wins 21st Straight
NJ Group 4 Title

On Nov. 9, 2019, Eastern Regional High, which draws its students from Voorhees, Berlin and Gibbsboro, in South Jersey, defeated Hunterdon Central, 9-0, at Bordentown, to win its 21st consecutive South Jersey Group 4 championship -- all under the guidance of coach Danyle Heilig. She started at Eastern in 1999 after coaching in 1998 at Haddon Heights. The story is here . . .

By Chris Nalwasky | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
Another year, another Group 4 title for Eastern.
With the 9-0 victory over Hunterdon Central, the Vikings, No. 2 in the latest NJ.com Top 20, won their 21st consecutive Group 4 title and 23rd all-time on Saturday at Bordentown.
It is the second most consecutive group crowns in a row in the state in any sport behind Paulsboro wrestling’s 25.
“It’s honestly one of the best feelings of the season.,” Ryleigh Heck said. “Our whole team was excited. We were ready and we wanted it. Coming into the program, I knew about the past. Our coach motivates us to keep the streak going."
Heck led the way with four goals and two assists. She now has 76 goals and 22 assists on the season.
Eastern (22-1), which is ranked No. 2 in the entire country by Max Field Hockey, took nine minutes to finally get on the scoreboard as Hunterdon Central (13-10-2) played tough defense. But after that, the Vikings spent much of the final 10 minutes in enemy territory. Eastern stayed on the attack after the seven-minute halftime break.
“They were definitely working very hard. They didn’t give up and were on us tight. It was hard to maneuver, but at the end, we figured out how to get by them. All of our corners gave us chances to score."
Riley Hudson, Tara Somers, Amanda Middleman, Elise Pettisani, and Carlee Thompson all scored as well for Eastern. Somers also added three assists while Kylie Zielinski notched one.
Hunterdon Central goalie Alexea Karpinski held her own between the posts. She recorded numerous tough saves throughout the contest.
“She made many saves,” Heck said. “It was hard to score on her. But, we kept going and got stronger.”
Next Wednesday, Eastern, the defending Tournament of Champions winners, will begin its quest for its ninth T of C title. Its opponent will be decided after the last game is played. The Vikings have made the T of C final in 11 of the 12 years of its existence.
Eastern and the Non-Public winner, No. 1 Oak Knoll, are the likely top two seeds and the two teams are likely on a collision course to the championship game. Oak Knoll beat Eastern, 4-1, back in September, and the Vikings have some revenge on their minds.
“Our whole team, we’ve been working toward that. We want to face Oak Knoll again and see how it goes,” Heck said. “They’re an amazing team."
Hunterdon Central reached the Group 4 final for the first time since 2004.

This quite-prophetic story was written in 1999 after Eastern Regional won its first -- of
MANY -- New Jersey Group 4 state championships.

By Tom McGurk
     Inquirer Suburban Staff
There was no official ceremony, but one could sense the symbolic passing of the dynasty torch Sunday on the artificial turf
at the College of New Jersey.

Since 1997, Ocean City has set the standard for South Jersey field hockey teams. The Red Raiders have won three straight
state Group 3 titles and amassed a 70-3-4 mark over that stretch.

Behind coach Trish LeFever, Ocean City successfully dealt with the pressure of being among the area's elite and overcame
the graduation of key players, such as 1997 Inquirer player of the year Abbey Woolley and four-year goalie Jen Cushinotto
in 1998.

The Red Raiders will carry an area-best 35-game unbeaten streak into next season. However, they will have to replace the
state's top 1-2 punch in Cory Picketts (36 goals) and Jenee Doto (31), who were named the Field Hockey Club of South
Jersey's defensive and offensive players of the year, respectively, Monday on. Picketts and Doto (who scored a school-record
80) combined for 159 career goals.

So the dynasty could well be over.

Now, it might be Eastern's turn.

With only two seniors - link Lindsey Domers and back Kari Adler - in the starting lineup, the Vikings put together their first
undefeated season (20-0-1) and won the state Group 4 championship.

Eastern was dominant, outscoring its opponents by an eye-popping 102-4. The lone blemish was a 1-1 tie against Shawnee
on Oct. 1, a game in which the Vikings held an 18-5 advantage in shots and a 23-4 edge in corners.

Their biggest strength this season was their defense, which often appeared to go unnoticed because of the sheer power of
its offense. Along with Adler, sophomores Lori Hillman and Mary Beth Miller and freshman Rachel Dawson continually
frustrated opponents with speed and skill. Junior Colleen Bolger established herself as one of the area's premier goalies with
18 shutouts, including 14 straight to end the season.

``Our defense was so strong,'' Adler said. ``If someone messes up, there was always someone else to back the play up.
That's teamwork. ''

Junior Lisa Kreckel, who missed all of last season because of a knee injury, enjoyed a breakout season with 18 goals. The
rest of the forward line was also productive, with freshman Shaun Banta (13 goals) and juniors Jamie Fraser (nine), Kristie
O'Donnell (seven) and Kirby Hicks (five).

In the midfield, junior link Sarah Dawson appeared to be in the middle of every play in the postseason. If a 30-yard,
one-handed, reverse-stick dribble in the state final against Phillipsburg wasn't inspiring enough, there was the overtime goal on
her 17th birthday that dispatched Shawnee in the state semifinals.

Eastern's biggest off-season concern will be replacing Domers, the Boston University-bound link who was one of the area's
top players and provided tons of leadership.

Coach Danyle Heilig, a former Moorestown standout, deserves some of the credit for molding the Vikings. Heilig turned a
deflated Haddon Heights program into a Colonial Conference champion last season before she took over at Eastern.

Heated warmups. It's a wonder Eastern isn't tired by the start of a game.

The Vikings go through an extensive pregame warmup routine, which includes as many as three different drills being
performed at the same time.

At first, it looks disorganized mainly because most of the players are moving around at the same time, but the drills have
become the staple of the Vikings' success.

``You can always tell in warmups if we're ready,'' Domers said after the Vikings' 6-0 win over Millville in the South Jersey
Group 4 final.
