RECAPS OF SEASONS RESULTING
IN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS
1962
OLYMPIC CONFERENCE (7-0)
In its first full Olympic season, the Silver Knights thumped
Clearview, 32-0, to complete its run of perfection. Harry Capozzoli ran 10 times
for 87 yards and four TDs while Rich Harris gained 109 yards on 14 totes,
blocked well for Capozzoli and made two interceptions. Tom Carroll hit Dan
Maurer for a 59-yard score.
1963
OLYMPIC CONFERENCE (7-0)
Sterling again rolled through seven games, extending its conference
winning streak to 14. Harry Capozzoli whizzed for a 25-yard TD on his first
carry and finished with 100 total yards (plus another TD). A 12-yard pass from
Dan Mazziotta to Joe Feuda, who made a one-handed catch, produced TD No. 3.
Deptford could have earned a title tie with a win.
1973
COLONIAL CONFERENCE (6-1)
Sterling fell to Haddon Heights, 15-6, in its final conference game.
Twelve days later, on Thanksgiving, HH spanked Haddonfield, 45-0, to create a
tie for the championship.
1974
COLONIAL CONFERENCE (7-0)
The Silver Knights completed a perfect conference campaign by topping
Haddon Heights, 13-0. The shutout was their fourth and they allowed just 16
total points. Wilson Bratten ran for a short score and Jeff Pelouze preferred to
go lonnnnng -- 94-yard kickoff return. Final overall record: 10-0.
1975
COLONIAL CONFERENCE (7-0)
Again the Silver Knights achieved perfection while allowing 31
points. The finale was a 40-0 destruction of Haddon Heights. The losers
committed six turnovers, but so did the winners. Tim O'Brien turned 11 carries
into 156 yards and two TDs while Brian Broomell passed 7-for-13 for 84 yards and
one score.
1977
COLONIAL CONFERENCE (7-0)
Guess what? There was eve more defensive dominance this season. En route
to their second perfect overall record (11-0) in four years, Sterling opened
with six shutouts (five in conference play) and yielded just eight conference
points. Again the last-game opponent, Haddon Heights, was waffled (by 50-0).
Sterling bagged 491 yards of total offense and Jeff Pacific notched lengthy TDs
-- 65-yard pass from Ken Kelley, 55-yard run. Kelley's three conversion runs
raised his season total to 15, a South Jersey record.
1984
COLONIAL CONFERENCE (7-2)
The Silver Knights suffered losses to Woodbury and West Deptford,
but, oddly, finished in a three-way tie for first with Paulsboro and Gateway.
Dan Swallow recorded 17 tackles and one interception in the final game, a 27-0
Thanksgiving blanking of Collingswood. The defense also received a defensive TD
from Tony Revelas, who recovered a fumble in the end zone. Pat Trioli caused it.
Chip Oliver passed 6-for-8 for 87 yards and a 61-yard TD to Robert Hughes.
Sterling scored on its first three possessions.
1985
COLONIAL CONFERENCE (9-0)
After losing a playoff game to Overbrook, the Silver Knights
concluded conference play at 9-0 with a 29-0 Turkey Day triumph over
Collingswood. Clint Person (23-79) and Calvin Shepard-Cass (8-89) halved four
rushing TDs and Henry Johnson claimed the school record for field goals in a
season by hitting his fourth. The 9-0 record remains Sterling's best in
conference play.
1990
COLONIAL CONFERENCE (8-1)
Haddon Heights and Woodbury completed 8-1 conference campaigns one week
earlier and Sterling created a triple tie on Thanksgiving by edging
Collingswood, 7-0. A first quarter drive covered 72 yards in 14 plays. Greg
Kelley caped it with a 24-yard run. Despite their success, the Silver Knights
did not make the playoffs due to a shortage of power points.
1992
COLONIAL CONFERENCE (8-0-1)
The only blemish was a scoreless tie with West Deptford in conference
game No. 6. The outright title was claimed Thanksgiving morning, thanks to 34-0
domination of Collingswood. John Fox (22-202) rushed for four TDs and Joe Miller
(11-164) added one. Miller upstaged Fox in the longest TD contest, 55 yards to
53. The defense limited Collingswood to 45 yards and forced five turnovers. One
of the stars was linebacker Ryan Barikian, nephew of C-wood coach (and former
Sterling player) Bob Barikian.
2001
COLONIAL LIBERTY (4-1)
The Silver Knights suffered a loss to West Deptford in their second
of five division games. They finished in a tie with WD and Haddonfield after
rolling to a 51-14 blasting of Collingswood on Thanksgiving Eve. Ken Parker
(13-164) and Harold Barton (7-122) rushed for two TDs apiece and Jay Cage repped
the defense with a 70-yard score on an interception.
2005
COLONIAL LIBERTY (3-1)
Sterling fell to Collingswood, 7-6, on Thanksgiving Eve and that result
allowed those teams and West Deptford to triple-share the championship in a
five-team division. Both teams scored in the first quarter. Mychael Scott's
58-yard dash moved the Silver Knights within 7-6, but the PAT was unsuccessful.
After posting a goal-line stand, C-wood maintained possession for the final
8:21.
