WOOD 44, JUDGE 31 2/27
CL QUARTERFINAL
We suspect these cheerleaders were representing Father Judge (smile).
Judge's Damien Palantino guards Corey Filer.
Shot No. 1 of the happy Vikings, now 1-11 in official CL playoff history . . .
And here's No. 2, though Allen Borovich looks more dazed than thrilled --
smile.
(Sorry there aren't more action pics. The camera was balky for a while.)

JUDGE 60, NORTH CATHOLIC 48 2/23
NORTH PRE-PLAYOFF
John "Cecil" McLean (L) is the scoreboard operator for Judge's
home games, but ex-referee Jim King handled the duties for
this one. Doesn't look like "Cec" was too upset about that.
Brett Bryan (10) guards Kevin Lynch and the fans are packed even into a corner.
Tim McCauley moves off Chris Schwartz' pick, and Andrew Pomager awaits him.
A look at the large crowd at the other end of the gym.
Damien Palantino covers Danny Breen. Ref Kevin McKinley and North coach Mike McCarron are to the left.
GRATZ 63, UNIV. CITY 34 2/22
CLASS AAAA SEEDING GAME (For 3rd/4th)
Gratz' Ryheem Miller keeps Charles McKissick at bay.
Ervin Jordan rejects a shot by Sean Gilbert.
The ball's on the rim, the ref has a foul call and the trash can, right against
the baseline, is catching water
that's dripping from the ceiling. (I know. It wasn't raining -- smile.)
Ameer Ali shoots over Robert Mosby.
Malik Alvin fires a jumper over Anthony Morrison and the fight for position begins inside.
Ameer Ali takes it to the hole vs. Robert
Mosby.
PREP CHARTER 69, ENG. AND SCIENCE 55 2/20
PUBLIC LEAGUE SEMIFINAL
E&S' Fred Gresham is surrounded by two defenders and Haven Wroten
(20) awaits him.

Rashiid Coleman is in his stance and ready to challenge Frankford's Ryan Smith (22).
Lewis Leonard is on the move and Scott Rodgers (44) is
ready to slap the ball.
Maurice Miller barrels over a Central defender just after
releasing the shot.
Julian Coleman, brother of Central's
Rashiid, rests on second row of stands
after throwing up about eight days'
worth of meals, or so it seemed
(smile). His mom is talking with
Central's principal, Sheldon Pavel.
In this one, Julian is sitting back up
and Frankford's Ryan Smith is taking
a brief break from frustration.
Rashiid Coleman prepares to release a runner.
WEST CATHOLIC 69, BONNER 60 (OT) 2/18
Bonner's Derrick Graff blocks Chris Mayo's shot.
Joe Askew converts over Mike Heppler.
Steve Wheatley rejects Derrell Hand.
Jeff Jones hits a bank shot over Maurice Denton.
Jeff Jones releases over Joe Askew while absorbing a bump from Antonio Banks.
EPISCOPAL 65, MALVERN 43 2/17
INTER-AC SHOWCASE TOURNEY
Malvern's Tom Grandieri makes his eyes red and dares Gerald Henderson to make a move (smile).
No one seems too interested in dealing with Henderson
on the inside.
Henderson controls a rebound and looks to pass upcourt. The Malvern player is Kevin Dougherty.
Wayne Ellington blocks Kevin Dougherty's shot.
GTN. ACADEMY 42, PENN CHARTER 30 2/17
INTER-AC SHOWCASE TOURNEY
GA's Andrew Ott completes a dunk.
GA's Brian Grimes, covered by Joe Rauchut, considers an entry pass to Ryan Ayers.
Sammy Zeglinski holds the ball and Kirk Jones
tries to stay loose.
Now, at least there's some action for Jones and Sammy Zig.
FRANKFORD 52, GRATZ 45 2/15
PUBLIC LEAGUE QUARTERFINAL
Gratz' Sean Gilbert scores over Frankford's
Lorenzo Byrd.
Ryheem Miller tries to move past Ryan Smith.
Kenny Spotwood hits a floater over Sean Gilbert.
Talk about a jumper. Frankford's Ryan Smith gets serious lift against Syheem Perkins.
Lewis Leonard gets mobbed after the game. All we can see is his red-white sneaker (smile).
JUDGE 50, CONWELL-EGAN 47 2/14
BILL FOX BECOMES CL'S WINNINGEST COACH (542)
C-E's Finn Skovdal contests a shot
by Jim Schule.
Jim Schule looks to pass late in the first half. Not sure who the C-E player is.
Dan Griffin prepares to launch a trey and Chris Schwartz (31) and Kevin Lynch come flying to the ball.
Bill Fox speaks with a cameraman from Comcast SportsNet.
Bill Fox is about to receive the game ball from The Rev. Joseph Campellone,
Judge's president. His
family shares the moment. Front, L to R -- daughter Maura, wife Maryellen, daughter
Bridget. Back,
L to R -- son Brendan, Bill, son Brian. (Sorry about the red eyes.)
WOOD 51, LA SALLE 19 2/13
Before the game, student reporters Jack "In the Box" Crouse (La
Salle, L) and Kevin "Booch" Bucher decided they
needed to step outside and settle a few things . . . Just kidding. I set this up. Jack
said, "Ted, you're a crazy guy." As
if I didn't know (smile)
Rob Pearson (25) chest-bumps sixth man
Mike Murnane during intros.
Wood's Matt Spadafora guards Tyrell Marshall and Wood coach Joe Sette takes up
half
the picture (smile).
La Salle's Joe Sobocinski screeches to a halt as Mike Piselli defends.
Chris "Meadowlark" Crawford dribbles between his legs. That is against Catholic North rules! (ha ha)
DOUGHERTY 46, JUDGE 45 2/11
Judge's Arthur Livingston rejects Vincent Simpson's
layup attempt.
Dwight Lyons has ball stripped by Mike Briscella (R) as he flies into
Jim Schule.
The ball squirts out of Vincent Simpson's hands and over the baseline. Damien
Palantino is the closest defender. Chris Schwartz is reaching.
Arthur Livingston deposits an easy two in front of Josh "Scrap"
Martin. That's Judge coach Bill Fox with hands on hips.
James Franklin penetrates among four defenders. Kahlil Mumford appears to have
his hand
on the ball. Dwight Lyons is No. 22.
These are mostly (all?) members of Bill Fox's family. They hoped to see him
become the winningest coach in Catholic League history, but it wasn't to
be.
SJ PREP 42, BONNER 32 2/11
Bonner's Jeff Jones pulls up and Corey O'Rourke goes sprawling.
Corey O'Rourke dogs Jeff Jones and Speedy Morris begs for a 5-second call.
This was unusual because Speedy hardly ever complains or makes suggestions
to the refs (smile).
Derrick Graff makes a tippy-toes pass over Larry
Loughery (front) and Reggie Redding.
I'm posting this one only because all 10 players are in it.
PUBLIC LEAGUE ROUND OF 16
PREP CHARTER 86, FREIRE 62 2/10
PC's Rodney Green, who shot 17-for-19 en route to 36 points, is covered
by Dwayne "Mister" Johnson.
Isaiah Coleman defends and Bilal Rogers looks to pass.
Jason Dogan moves through the lane and is bothered by Pierre
Lewis (L) and James Morene.
Since when do teammates cover each other in a game? (smile) That's Rodney
Green on the left.
Isaiah Coleman moves past Rodney Green.
Paris Griffin is upended by James Morene on what was momentarily
a very scary play.
Marcus Morris steps over the baseline and Lavine Grimes grabs the rock.
UNIV. CITY 31, SOUTHERN 29 2/8
Eric Harrington catches an entry pass.
The Jaguars break from a timeout as the sun, coming in from the
windows, sheds some light on the situation.
Robert Mosby contests Amir Ryan's floater.
FRANKFORD 77, LINCOLN 58 2/7
Frankford's Kenny Spotwood shoots over Jamill Baker.
Lewis Leonard skies for reverse layup.
Peekaboo. Kenny Spotwood is not letting Jamill Baker see you. Or the basket. Or any of his teammates.
FREIRE 105, DEL VAL 72 2/5
Del Val's Raymond Wells (30) and Clifford Copper reach and look up for a loose
ball that's
just out of the picture. That blue thing at the left is one of eight padded
columns. There are four
on each side and they're no more than two feet off the sidelines. Freire is
located in a former
YMCA at 2027 Chestnut Street.
Freire's James Morene grabs a rebound.
Isaiah Coleman converts a reverse layup.
Dwayne "Mister" Johnson passes in front of Richard
Broady.
RYAN 44, JUDGE 43 (OT) 2/4
Ryan's Joe Zeglinski controls the ball and heads off to the
races. The Judge player is Mike Briscella.
Joe Zeglinski covers Tim McCauley and the balcony is almost filled.
Mike Varanavage launches a trey as Mike Briscella makes a tippy-toed attempt at
a
block.
The immediate aftermath. Ryan coach Bernie Rogers, looking a little flushed
(smile), begins the walk to shake
hands with Judge coach Bill Fox. Jon Bruce, who'd fouled out, runs onto the court and gets
ready to exchange
hugs with Kevin Hudgeons (40). Judge's Tim McCauley can't bear to watch.
DAN DOUGHERTY, WINNINGEST COACH IN CITY HISTORY 2/3
Episcopal coach Dan Dougherty recently became the winningest coach in city
history with 542. He was up to 548 as of 2/3, along
with 606 total wins counting time at schools outside the city leagues. My story is in the
2/4 Daily News. These guys were
outside Doc's classroom as we finished the interview and they came in for a photo op.
L to R -- Dan Nealis, Tim Ivory, Mike Nealis, Craig Wallace, Zac Arbitman, Pat Kelly,
Gerald Henderson, Doc, Joe Rosati,
Brian FitzPatrick and Mike Yocum. (Dylan Brown, Wayne Ellington and Greg Isdaner were
elsewhere.)
(Meanwhile, what's with the hands on chins for Arbitman and Kelly? They struck the same
pose in the Episcopal team photo --
smile.)
STEVE SLATON SIGNS 2/2
Conwell-Egan RB-DB Steve Slaton signs his letter of intent with West Virginia.
He is
flanked by his mom and coach Kevin Kelly. Photo by Mike Marano.
NEUMANN-GORETTI 74, ROMAN 69 (OT) 2/2
N-G's Earl Pettis guards Raymond "Doodles" Sims and Roman's students
hang out on the stage.
And, yes, this Phila. U. gym is always yellow.
Antonio "Scoop" Jardine guards Raymond "Doodles" Sims in
the night's
best matchup of cool nicknames (smile).
The Roman kids try to intimidate N-G foul shooter Phil Love. Didn't work. He went 2-for-2.
Derrick "D.J." Rivera goes between the legs to evade Bobby Jordan.
AUDENRIED 48, PENN 46 2/2
Check out the warped boards on Penn's court. There are six/seven rectangular
areas like this
spread around the playing surface. Dangerous!! Can you spell l-a-w-s-u-i-t?
Audenried's Andrew Hardy tries to block a shot by Penn's
pogo-sticking Mikal Jennings.
Penn's Keith Mobley played for Gratz last
season and can't rid himself of some red.
Mikal Jennings drives the left side and Hasan Roundtree prepares to pick Alex Jones.
Soph PG Orie Johnson is 5-foot tall. Maybe.
Maybe not. We do know this: He's a treat to watch.
EPISCOPAL 53, GTN. ACADEMY 45 2/1
Episcopal's Gerald Henderson moves past Ryan Ayers.
Wayne Ellington dumps a pass to Gerald Henderson, whose head is barely visible
over
the left shoulder of Joe Rosati (34).
Gerald Henderson covers Ryan Ayers.
Brian Grimes shoots over Gerald Henderson.
Just a general shot to show the GA bench, Episcopal rooters right behind them, overflow crowd, etc.
