MARCH 1
SEASON REVIEW

The Blue Devils finished the season with a 10-16 record overall and 2-10 in the
Inter-Ac (tourney included). They started the year off great with an 8-7 record with
impressive wins over Friends' Central and Truman. When it came to league
play the Devils came up short and couldn’t finish games that they were
winning. Their most impressive wins had to be against Germantown Friends,
who finished the season with 15 wins, and Episcopal at home, when the Devils
led the entire game, by 10 points. There were many disappointing losses
this year. Against Malvern at Arcadia, led the whole game until the start
of the 4th quarter; GA at home, we were up 7 with under 4 minutes to
go in the game; PC at Inter-Ac tourney, when Mike “Spike” Christiansen put
up a career-high 14 points and couldn’t be guarded by anyone. We were up,
56-52, with less than 3 minutes to go and missed the front end of a one and
one. The season was an improvement from past years, a new coaching staff
and some new players improved 3 games from '06. There are some
young talents that could step up next year and make our program even more
competitive. Mike Mattei (JR) had big games against PC and EA and showed
leadership on the court and unselfishness throughout the year. Enforcer
Mike Lonergan (Jr) brings physicality and hustle all the time. Mike
Rhoads, former GA guard who was forced to sit out this year for I-A games, will be back
as a junior and Matt Whitworth who showed signs of improvement towards the
end of the year. Gary Lawrence showed signs of greatness at times but will
have to be consistent for our program to take the next step.
Team MVP:  Sr. Mo Young
He was the teams' most improved and the team's MVP. He’s quick, can dribble
and gave fits to opposing defenders and was named to Honorable Mention all
inter-ac. Mo averaged 10.1 points in league play.
Best School Ever: Malvern Prep
This school is so perfect. They take the liberty to critique anyone and
nothing seems to be wrong up on the farm.
Best Performance:
Due to an injury Mo Young suffered against Kima, Mike Christiansen poured
in 14 points and had Sam Zeglinski on skates the whole night. Spike also
made some flashy assists around defenders while in the air. This was
without a doubt a night to remember for him.
Worst Column on Ted Silary: Friarside Chats
In an early season report I chose to run with the self proclaimed “Big
guns”. These Big guns are Malvern students Ted Rawlings, Kevin Newby and
Brian Thomas; sweet crew. These guys are legends up on the farm and also
pose well for pics. I say they are the worst writers on this site because
of the things they said about our school, fellow classmates and myself.

INTER-AC LEAGUE
GA 56, CHA 52
Disappointment is a word to describe this game and the Blue Devils whole
season. Athletic Director Mark Burke took over for Ed Aversa and had high
hopes for rebuilding this program. We came into this game off of our first
Inter-Ac win over Episcopal in which the Devils dominated the game from
start to finish. They had momentum coming into this game and played
consistent for the first three quarters and about four minutes. They made
shots and played good defense, shutting down Kyle Griffin for the first
three quarters. He scored 9 of his 14 pts in the 4th quarter. CHA led this
game going into the 4th quarter, 37-32, and had controlled the tempo of the
game up to that point. GA scored 24 pts in the 4th behind Kyle Griffin and
Jeff Holton (7 of his 10 pts) in the final period. Holton also hit two big
free throws in the final moments of the game to seal it for the Patriots.
CHA soph Gary Lawrence showed signs of greatness, scoring 21 pts and pulling
down 13 boards. He played physical and has showed maturity throughout his
Sophomore year. CHA killed themselves at the line going 14-27 (51%). Mo
Young (16pts) played great defense on Kyle Griffin and was the reason he
was a non-factor in the first half. The CHA fan section was great, coming
to the game with a boom box equipped with a CD containing the Super Mario
Brothers theme song for GA coach Jim Fenerty.
P.S. -- The day after this game I learned that Mr. Burke was suffering heart
complications and was in the hospital. My prayers go out  to the Burke
family and I hope for a speedy recovery.

INTER-AC LEAGUE
Chestnut Hill 57, Episcopal 48
How sweet it is: The Devils got their first Inter-Ac win in over a year. From start to finish the Devils dominated this game and Episcopal, who showed no fight until the late moments of the game, played lackadaisically. The Devils entered this game with an 0-4 record in the I-A and were coming off a tough loss to the Quakers of Penn Charter. They started the game off leading, 16-7, at the end of the first quarter and never looked back. Jr G/F Mike Mattei led the Devils again (13 pts, 8 brds, 2 blks) and has emerged, in my eyes, as the Devils best player. He is 6’2, can shoot, jump, and sometimes is too unselfish. Other leaders for the Devils were Soph Gary Lawrence (11 pts, 6 brds, 1 blk) and Sr Guard Mo Young (10 pts, 4 brds). For Episcopal Jr Dan Hilferty led with 9 pts. Big men Mike Nealis and Herb Bowen (both about 6’6) combined for only 14 pts against an undersized frontline. Jr Forward Mike Lonergan (6’2) and Sr C Eric Dziengelski (6’0) had to do with the lackluster night for EA’s two giants. Both bodied up and overpowered the bigger Nealis and Bowen. CHA’s next game is this Friday the 26th against a GA team that blew the Devils off the court in their first meeting.
PS: Many people will agree with me about how BAD the officiating was for this game. Episcopal coaches were on the floor yelling at the refs. Players diving on top of each other and no call, but the next possession ticky-tack fouls are called.

Penn Charter 64, Chestnut Hill 54
This loss was tough to swallow. CHA led 29-24 at half and had a PC team that underestimated the talent of our team -- and specifically Jr. Mike Mattei, who exploded for a career-high 21 pts on 7-8 shooting from the arc -- right where they wanted them. The turning point in the game was in the third quarter when sr. Mo Young stripped Sammy Zeglinski and then proceeded to “talk smack” and hiss off the wrong  person on the court. Zeglinski erased a 7-point lead in a matter of about fifty seconds.  He scored 11 of his 24 pts in the third quarter and his team then preceded to take over the game. Frosh Travis Robinson (10 pts) is a manchild. He’s about 6’4 and seems more than willing to take the reins from Zeglinski once he graduates. Gary Lawrence and Mo Young had 10 apiece. I’m interested to see how the second meeting between these two teams turns out. Because when the Devils are shooting well they can play with anyone in the league.

"Da Rebuttle" (or "Rebuttal", as it's really spelled)
The following piece is a direct statement issued by the
“Kingsley Krazie” Nation (not specifically by me!!) in response to the false, harsh, and misleading comments by the Friarside “Big Guns.” So pop your collars, sit back, and enjoy.
Plain and simply “your boys” aren’t back. You are always in the basement of the Inter-Ac and you have not won a championship since 1995. You have no promising young talent, and converting All-City lineman (congratulations) such as Paul Ostick (who has trouble making it up the court more than once without wheezing) into a center simply won’t work. We won in 1998 behind the famous Whitworth brothers, who left their mark in the city of Philadelphia. Who do you have that will be remembered? Nope, sorry, Brian Grandieri does not count.
First, let us begin with how you Friarsiders got to the game. After “Fergi”, and “KNEWBS” hopped into “B’s” Civic you bumped one another to “Earth, Wind, and Fire.” Oh, and one more thing, no one wants to hear about “KNEWBS” sloppy brawl at the only bar in Malvern. Just because every farmer and their sons were there does not mean it has to get out of control. Keep it classy.
So you guys got to the game late (true fans), and claimed to get harassed by hoodlums. According to the dictionary a hoodlum is defined as a “thug or gangster.” Simply put, they do not exist amongst the Kingsley Krazie faithful nor would they publicly beat 5’7 gangster midgets, a bar-brawl crippled such as “KNEWBS”, and Jordan “I take Webshots of me and my friends” Ferguson. Maybe it was girls in white Ts who were scratching and clawing at your ever-so-sexy bodies. I know that’s a shock since you go to an all-boys school that does not even have a coordinate program. Farm life tends to shelter young men like yourselves from the beauties of adolescent life. And then you refer to yourself as Goliath. While Ostick and Alberici may look like Goliath, your team is not that type of powerhouse. Also according to the fable Goliath gets taken down by David, the smaller and clever opponent whom we resemble (see you on the 27th).
On to the game. We, being the faithful fans that we are, were in attendance from the beginning. We played well in the first half. Our sharp shooting along with tough defense allowed us to go into the half with a four point lead. The Devils held Malvern to 22 points, which was 22 more yards than Hoban gained against the Devils in football. And his “fumble recovery” would have been overturned if the Inter-Ac had a replay system. But you beat us. We’re not going to sit here and complain about Rashad Campbell’s punt return for a touchdown that was called back. Basically we’re going to wait for next year, when we come to your house with big-game experience, a Maxwell award nominee, and nine returning starters that held your Godsend Hoban in check. But until then, good game.
Back to the court. In the second half you guys played well. However you still showed no signs of a good basketball team. You still can’t play solid defense (leaving us wide open jumpers that we just did not make), Hoban can not make free throws when he hears Rashad’s name, and as a result you will get beat by teams like GA, Episcopal (who you already lost to), PC (next time around) and Haverford (led by the classy John Haldy, who not only is extremely talented but was able to take our taunting and come up to us after the game and tell us that we were the best student section in the area). We will admit we’re not a good basketball team. We have our moments, but that does not mean we walk around calling ourselves the “Terror Squad.” Please just “Lean Back”, chill out, and realize you are a below average basketball team, below average reporters, and awful fans.
As for player of the game. We’re going to give it to John Alberici. No one else played well enough to get the MVP. While Mike “I wear straw and overalls while cruising in B’s civic taking webshots with Fergi” Francisco was clutch from the line, he’s still a young bull and is not deserving enough of this award. The “Ogre” however is a pure joy to watch. You can not help but laugh. Enough said.
Now to the defense of our players. You called out Gary Lawrence. OK, he had a rough day. But needless to say he is, like you said, 6’6. Let me inform you he is a young sophomore who is not far off from eight years old. Give him time to fill out, refine his skills and this kid will be special. At least we have young players with upside. I wouldn’t be surprised if he lights the Friars up the next couple years. Look for us, we'll be the ones standing in the back saying I told you so.
Next there’s Mike “Spike” Christiansen, who you so kindly gave the Player of the Game Award to. Chicks dig the hair. Get over it. B, you need to stop playing that act that you're some sort of 5’7 gangster, and start keeping it real like our man Spike. He isn’t going to put up big numbers, but he’s quick, hustles (if I recall he caught up to the speedy Joe Hoban and blocked him en route to a lay up) , and has a lot of heart (something your team doesn’t know much about).
Last but not least there’s the “Kingsley Krazies.” A joke, huh? Where were your fans at the Inter-Ac opener, or for that matter where have they been all year? Malvern is a good academic institution that provides kids with a solid education and athletic program. But what you kids are lacking is pride. Pride in your school, and your teams, regardless of their record. You fail to show up in support at any sporting events, and I am pretty sure the 3 of you “Big Guns” were the only students in attendance at this game. Word of advice: Stop trying to act like you're cool gangstas from DELCO. YOU'RE NOT. Just because you live in the middle of the woods/farm country, and watch MTV rap videos to see how you should dress, talk, and act, does not mean you cannot come cheer at basketball games. Be confident in yourselves, have some pride for your school, and come out to cheer and have a good time. Being yourselves for a change instead of wangstas would be extremely worth your while. Look at the “Kingsley Krazies.” Our basketball team is 1-31 in the last four years in league play. But still, game in and game out, we are there in support chanting, yelling, and getting in the heads of weak individuals like yourselves. Lastly you made a comment about thinking that St. Joe’s Prep is your rival. Let’s face it, they are better than you in every way and would be offended if they heard that. They are rivals with La Salle, so once again stop trying to be something you're not. Instead we like your idea of creating a rivalry between our two schools. We match up well in every aspect. Football you beat us by one point (ask your players, not you sideline reporters, what they thought of our team after the game), basketball by four. However let’s realize that we split games with you in baseball, demolish you in squash (ha ha) and soccer, and there’s still one more game left between us in basketball. See you on the 27th.
Truly Yours,
The Kingsley Krazies

INTER-AC LEAGUE
GA  64, Chestnut Hill 36
This game was a one-sided affair. From start to finish the Patriots
dominated the game even without SG Kyle Griffin. GA raced out to an 18-2
lead at the end of the first and buried the visiting Blue Devils. They
started the game by making pretty much every shot they took and the
opposite took place for the Blue Devils. One bright spot for the Devils
was Soph Gary Lawrence; he scored 15 pts and grabbed 8 boards. Jr. Mike
Mattei totaled 4 pts 9 boards. For the Patriots DJ Johnston led with 13 pts.
Jr. Joe Hill put up 12 pts and looks like the player who will take
Griffin's role as scorer while he is out. Great ball pressure & defense was
played by the troop of guards that the Blue Devils use (Srs. Mike
Christiansen, Mo Young , Mark Justice,
and Luke Pelullo). GA Frosh Cameron
Ayers showed poise that I didn't think was in him after seeing him play in
an early season game against Roman. Our student section was once again
loud, assuring themselves as the most deserving fans in the city of
Philadelphia and of course the best In the Inter-Ac. Congrats to Jim
Fenerty, who collected his 400th win.
P.S. -- The famous Puck was in attendance for this game and at one point he
exclaimed to some CHA parents that GA was a lock for the Inter-Ac
championship. He said this because word had spread around the gym that
Malvern had defeated Penn Charter. We'll have to see what happens.

INTER-AC LEAGUE
Malvern 55, Chestnut Hill 50
Fresh off the First Annual Chestnut Hill Academy Wing Bowl/Pep Rally
Friday night, that yours truly won, the Chestnut Hill Academy basketball
team was ready for the Inter-Ac tipoff at Arcadia University. Back to the
Wing Bowl, I singlehandedly destroyed the competition. In the first round
I knocked out head football coach Rick Knox, 9 wings in 45 secs. The 2nd
round: 12 wings in one minute while knocking my friend and linemate Wayne “5
Wing” Crawford out of the competition. Wayne then began to throw up in a
trash can. Then in the Championship round I faced off against Rashad “Mr.
Perfect” Campbell
and other line mate Don “Super Fan” Houck. I finished
the tray of 30 wings in under the time limit of three minutes. Taking home
the grand prize of a 10 dollar gift card to Wawa, a rubber chicken, and a
king hat. Back to the game, the Devils were ahead of the Friars for the
first three quarters of the game and had controlled the tempo up to that
point, but in the fourth quarter Malvern made their push outscoring the
Devils, 18-12, and erasing the five point lead held at the end of the third.
In the end this game came down to free throws. The Devils shot just 7-16
from the line compared to Malvern’s 15-21. Leading scorers for the Devils
were Srs. Dave Jennings (13 pts) and Mo Young (11 pts).  Jr. Mike Mattei
put up 9 pts on 3-4 shooting from long distance. Soph Gary Lawrence had
his up’s and down’s and finished with 10 pts (4-9 fts). Malvern’s Phil
Gosselin kept them in the game early scoring 11 of his 14 pts in the first
quarter. Sr.  Joe Hoban scored 10 pts and Sr Mike Francisco had 12 pts
(8-9 Fts). The atmosphere of the game was great all day due to the loud
and unruly cheering of the best student section in the Inter-Ac “The
Kingsley Krazies” led by Don Houck, Bob Hyson, and Anthony Cardona.
Chestnut Hill’s next game is Tuesday at Germantown Academy.

Inter-Ac Preview
I’m here writing for this website to clear up some speculation about the CHA basketball program -- we actually do have one and they have started the new era under coach/athletic director Mark Burke with a 7-6 record. Totaling the amount of wins from last year (7-19). I think this team can make some noise in the Inter-Ac this year if things fall into place and possibly win their first championship since the Whitworth bros ('96). Obviously Penn Charter was the favorite at the beginning of the year but their 10-loss start has knocked them out of city rankings. Haverford, who has their star guard John Haldy and frosh Dan Stewart (saw him play in the summer; can run and jump and has tons of potential), has started the season off with 11 wins and are a big surprise in my eyes. Germantown Academy has the always consistent Kyle Griffin, who decided to go to La Salle. They seem to be an average team who were down against a young Life Center Academy team at Gwynedd-Mercy College but took over in the second half. Episcopal  will be down after the loss of their three horses last year.  Guard Pat Kelly will be their leader with help from Herbert Bowen and Mike Nealis, both 6’8. Malvern has also been a surprise in my eyes with their 10-2 start. Joe “I got shut down by Shad Campbell” Hoban looks to be their leading scorer with their other player being Phil Gosselin. Now to the Blue Devils. Usually when you hear about CHA basketball, people talk about our two or three wins in league play over the past three years. I’m optimistic about the past assumptions about this team and think we have a chance to get some wins. 6’5 Soph Gary Lawrence will need to be consistent for the Devils to do anything thing this year. Solid contributions are needed from Jr. Mike Mattei, Sr Dave Jennings, Sr Mo Young and a transfer from GA, Soph Mike Rhoads. The race for the Inter-Ac is wide open and it's going to come down to who executes and makes plays.
