| 1952.10.05 | BERNIE BURKE MAKES QUICK WORK: At McCarthy Stadium, in the oldest available La Salle football game on film, linebacker Bernie Burke steps in to intercept a Falcon pass and races in for a touchdown. Ron Boyle kicks the extra point, but La Salle couldn’t dent the North defense, losing 19-7, to drop to 1-2-0 under firstyear coach Jim Gallagher. | 22 | 9 |
| 1953.10.18 | GOAL-LINE STAND STOPS SOUTH: At McCarthy Stadium, La Salle’s defense stiffens against the powerful Pirates of South Catholic, stopping them on an oldfashioned goal line stand, but South Catholic stifles the Little Explorer offense, winning 6-0, and dropping the Blue and Gold to 0-3-1. La Salle would win their last 4 games to salvage a 4-3-2 season. | 23 | 8 |
| 1953.11.01 | WARD HAS NORTH GOING SOUTH: At McCarthy Stadium, the 0-3-2 Little Explorers take on defending champ North Catholic. Running back Jim Ward takes the ball from quarterback Bill Magee and circles right end for a first and goal. After a few tries, Ward plunges into the end zone for a 6-0 lead. He goes on to score twice more, as La Salle upsets the Falcons, 18-0, in a “watershed” game that turns around the Blue and Gold Football fortunes. This is one of the earliest La Salle games found on film. | 6 | 9 |
| 1954.10.31 | DOUBLE-DEALING DAVE DIEHL: At McCarthy Stadium, end Dave Diehl gets loose on two long receptions, the first from QB Eddie Nessler and the second from QB John Henry from punt formation for a touchdown, as La Salle embalms the Hawks of St. Joseph’s Prep, 24-0, to improve their record to 3-4-0. They won their final 3 games to finish at 6-4-0. | 24 | 10 |
| 1954.11.25 | NESSLER, FRANKSON CLIP CLIVEDENS: At McCarthy Stadium on Thanksgiving Day, QB Eddie Nessler fires a deep pass over the middle, and Ray Frankson makes a one-handed juggling catch and races 63 yards for a touchdown to get the Little Explorers on the board, after Bill Cosby ran a punt back for a touchdown for the Clivedens. La Salle goes on to win, 13-7, to finish the year with 4 straight wins and a 6-4-0 record. | 21 | 8 |
| 1955.10.23 | MURRAY HURRIES WITH PIRATE PILFER: At Mc Carthy Stadium, in what may be the most important play in La Salle football history, end Chuck Murray intercepts a Bishop Neumann pass and races 27 yards for the only score of the game, as La Salle continues on their journey of a perfect season and a City Title with a 6-0 shutout of the previously unbeaten Pirates. | 9 | 10 |
| 1955.11.13 | HOPKINS HURRIES THROUGH BEARS: At Mc Carthy Stadium, Fullback Tom Hopkins cuts through the St. Thomas More line, and veers left, running freely into the end zone from 21 yards out, and the City Title-bound Little Explorers whitewash the Golden Bears, 22-0, to improve their perfect record to 8-0-0. | 16 | 7 |
| 1955.12.10 | FRANKSON RAY OF HOPE: For the first time in its history, La Salle had won the Catholic League, and was playing Northeast High School in the City Title game at Franklin Field. The opening play from scrimmage, called a “28”, was a play they worked on all week, as Ray Frankson burst through the line on a trap play and charged 74 yards deep into Northeast territory. That first-round knockdown led the Explorers to a 26-0 whitewash of the Archives, and the unbeaten and untied Explorers won their first City Championship. | 1 | 8 |
| 1955.12.10 | HUGH BROLLY: NUMBER 50 FOR 50: At Franklin Field, La Salle Quarterback Hugh Brolly masterfully runs the La Salle offense, and this time calls his own number. Brolly breaks a tackle just beyond the line of scrimmage, and lopes 50 yards into the end zone to put the game out of reach, as La Salle wins their first ever City Title with a 26-0 whitewash over highly-favored Northeast High School. Brolly ended his quarterback career with a perfect 10-0-0 record. | 7 | 10 |
| 1956.09.30 | GRECO ROAMIN' INTO END ZONE: At McCarthy Stadium, La Salle gets on the board first as quarterback Paul Aita’s pass is deflected by a St. James defender right into the hands of back Lou Greco, who accepts the gift for a 37 yard touchdown. The Jimmies come back from a 19-6 deficit to tie La Salle, 19-19, stopping the Explorer win streak at 16 games, with the Blue and Gold record now at 2-0-1. | 5 | 8 |
| 1956.10.21 | JOHNNY BE GONE: At McCarthy Stadium, Junior back Johnny Herrera scampers around right end for a 28-yard touchdown run, as the Little Explorers improve their record to 3-1-1 with a 26-0 blanking of the fledgling Crusaders of Father Judge. | 10 | 1 |
| 1956.10.21 | GRECO OFF TO WISTER WOODS: At McCarthy Stadium, quarterback Paul Aita sends a long bomb down the middle of the field to Lou Greco, and Greco races into the end zone for a 72-yard touchdown, and catches his breath to also make the PAT, as La Salle overwhelms a fledgling Father Judge squad, 26-0, to improve their record to 3-1-1. | 18 | 6 |
| 1957.10.20 | HERRERA BREAKS SCORELESS TIE: At McCarthy Stadium, the upstart Crusaders hold the mighty Explorers scoreless in the first half, but a 3rd-period drive culminating in John Herrera’s 6-yard plunge into the end zone, followed by his extra point, leads La Salle to a 20-0 victory, bringing their record to 4-0-0. | 24 | 3 |
| 1957.11.10 | SOLECKI, BIRCHLER CRUNCH CAHILLITES: At McCarthy Stadium, quarterback Al Solecki looks like he’s stopped at the line of scrimmage, but breaks through a tackle and gets outside for a long gain. A few plays later, Solecki sweeps the right side on an option play, and pitches to Ed Birchler, who takes it inside the flag for a touchdown, as the Little Explorers go 7-0-0 with a 53-12 blitz of Roman Catholic. | 17 | 5 |
| 1957.12.07 | AITA ARC TO FLASH HERRERA: At Franklin Field in the City Title game, the Explorers are trailing the Indians of Roxborough, 6-0. Struggling with the ground game, quarterback Paul Aita takes to the air, and lofts a pass in the left flat to the “Cuban Flash” Johnny Herrera, who takes it in for a 14-yard touchdown to tie the score. La Salle goes on to score two second-half rushing touchdowns in the mud and rain to defeat the Indians, 19-6, for their second City Title in three years. | 2 | 9 |
| 1957.12.07 | MUDDER MAXWELL A GREAT SCOTT: At Franklin Field, La Salle and Roxborough are tied, 6-6, entering the fourth quarter. La Salle’s field position enables them to advance to the shadow of the Indians’ goal line, where Joe “Scotty” Maxwell plunges over to give La Salle the lead. Maxwell also scores an insurance tally late in the fourth quarter, as the Little Explorers win the City Title for the second time in three years with a 19-6 victory over Roxborough. | 8 | 9 |
| 1958.11.16 | JERRY AND HOWARD NO COWARDS VS CARDS: At Springfield High School in a first-round playoff game, Sean Agnew takes a Cahillite punt and returns it 65 yards to the two-yard line. | 1958.12.13 | GITTENS GOING AND GONE: Playing in their 3rd City Title game in 4 years, La Salle takes on Lincoln High School at Franklin Field, and wins the coin toss, electing to receive. Deep in return position is Vic Gittens, a small package of dynamite as a return man. Gittens gathers the ball in at his own 12-yard line, and bolts up the middle of the field, taking the opening kickoff back for an 88-yard touchdown to put La Salle on top early. The Railsplitters were too much for the Explorers, though, winning by a 28-20 score. | 1 | 4 |
| 1958.12.13 | SHAUGHNESSY SHENANIGANS: At Franklin Field, in the City Title game, Fred Shaughnessy drops back to punt, but takes off up the right side for a first down, propelling the Little Explorers toward their second score of the game, but the Railsplitters of Lincoln prove to be too much for La Salle, as they defeat the Blue and Gold, 28-20, for the City Title. | 9 | 5 |
| 1960.10.02 | BOGDAN TARNISHES GOLDEN BEARS: At McCarthy Stadium, the Tommy More quarterback sends a long pass down the middle of the field, and defensive back Ed Bogdan tracks it down, and takes it up his left side for a 47-yard interception return for a touchdown, as the Explorers easily handle the Golden Bears, 20-0, for their third straight win to start the season. | 8 | 6 |

| 1960.11.13 | AS THE CROW FLIES PAST FALCONS: At McCarthy Stadium, halfback Tom Crow slants through a hole in the line and breaks free, making some moves to avoid tacklers, and gallops 52 yards for a touchdown, as the Little Explorers drub the Falcons of North Catholic, 28-8, to clinch the Catholic League in the regular season on their way to a City Title win over Frankford. | 14 | 8 |
| 1960.12.10 | DENNERY'S GOT THE GOODS: At Franklin Field for the City Title, La Salle held a 12-0 halftime lead over the Pioneers of Frankford High. Lining up on the right in the lonesome end position, Vince Dennery slants across the middle, grabs a pass from quarterback Ed Stranix, and races 44 yards for a touchdown to give La Salle an insurmountable lead on their way to a 24-0 victory and City Title over Frankford. It was Dennery’s second touchdown catch of the game, as the Explorers win their third City Title in six years. | 3 | 9 |
| 1960.12.10 | AS THE CROW FLIES TO DENNERY: At Franklin Field, in the City Title game, halfback Tom Crow takes a handoff, rolls right, and spots end Vince Dennery streaking downfield, hurling a 46-yard touchdown in the second quarter, as the Little Explorers defeat the Frankford Pioneers, 24-0, for their third City Title in six years. | 25 | 10 |
| 1961.09.24 | ORMOND SINKS PIRATES: At McCarthy Stadium, defensive back John Ormond returns a punt 35 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, and the score holds up in an 8-0 defeat of the Pirates of Bishop Neumann, as the defending City Champion Explorers start the season at 2-0. | 2 | 3 |

| 1961.11.05 | GRIFFITH PICK, O'NEILL DEAL: At McCarthy Stadium, linebacker Bob Griffith dives in front of a Burr receiver to intercept a pass. Then, RB Joe O’Neill rumbles close to the goal line, and bucks in from 2 yards. Bill Magarity passes to Tom Hendricks for the two points, but West Catholic comes back to defeat the Explorers, 18-8. to ruin their 7-0 start to the season. | 24 | 6 |
| 1961.11.12 | O'NEILL AND MAXWELL START ONSLAUGHT: At McCarthy Stadium, La Salle’s first drive of just two plays starts with a 50 yard run around right end by Joe O’Neill, and ends with a 29 yard run around left end by Jim Maxwell for a touchdown, as La Salle tramples Roman Catholic, 50-0, to improve their record to 8-10, and clinch a tie for the regular season crown with Monsignor Bonner. | 19 | 1 |
| 1961.11.25 | DANIEL FINDS LONESOME END: At Temple Stadium, in the Catholic League Championship game, quarterback Frank Daniel finds lonesome end Tom Hendricks on a V-pattern for a 28 yard touchdown to cut the Monsignor Bonner lead to 7-6, but the friar defense holds off the Explorers to win the Catholic League for the second time in 3 years over La Salle, 13-6. | 7 | 5 |

Running back Jan Muller bursts through the line and is finally dragged down by a Judge defender, but not before the 59-yard gain brings the ball to the Father Judge one yard line. Quarterback Frank Daniel follows his left guard into the end zone for the touchdown. Though the extra point try was missed, La Salle hangs on to the 20-12 lead in their season-opening win. Note the fancy scoreboard at Northeast in 1962!. | 3 | 3 |
| 1962.09.16 | DANIEL, BANNISTER SLIDE DOWN JUDGE: At Northeast High School, QB Frank Daniel arcs a pass to the left corner of the end zone, and Jim Bannister snags it for a 12 yard touchdown. | 1962.09.23 |
MAXWELL'S HOUSE RUN BREWS FALCONS: At McCarthy Stadium, running back Jim Maxwell skirts left end for a nice gain, and then takes a quick handoff from quarterback Frank Daniel for a 12-yard touchdown up the middle, as the Explorers increase their record to 2-0 with a 20-0 shutout of the North Catholic Falcons. |

| 1962.10.07 | DANIEL'S BURR-FECT PASS TO O'NEILL: At McCarthy Stadium, quarterback Frank Daniel fires a strike down the slot to Joe O’Neill for a touchdown, but the twopoint play is missed, and La Salle ends up losing to West Catholic, 14-12, for their first loss after starting the season with three wins. | 17 | 8 |
| 1963.10.27 | FAHY, FOTA FOIL FATHER JUDGE: In a tight game crossing from the third to the fourth quarter at Northeast High School, running backs Joe Fahy and Stan Fota finally break loose on two great runs to set up a 1-yard plunge by Fahy to give La Salle a 12-0 lead that they hold against an improving Father Judge team, as the Explorers even their record to 2-2-2 and start a 4-game winning streak to finish out the season. | 4 | 6 |
| 1963.10.27 | McFADDEN ALONE IN END ZONE: At Northeast High School, quarterback Dennis Blake rolls out to the left and finds an astonishingly wide open Bernie McFadden in the end zone, and the Explorers go on to shut out the Crusaders of Father Judge, 12-0, to even their record at 2-2-2. | 9 | 2 |
| 1963.11.10 | FOLEY, FAHY FLUMMOX FALCONS: At Lincoln High School, defensive back Jay Foley returns a punt 47 yards in the second quarter for one touchdown, and HB Joe Fahy raced 33 yards to set up the other touchdown, as La Salle improves their record to 3-2-2 with a 12-0 blanking of North Catholic. | 25 | 6 |
| 1964.10.11 | McNICHOL FOILS FALCONS: At Lincoln High School, midway through the third period, RB Steve McNichol breaks free down the left sideline for a 28-yard touchdown to stretch the La Salle lead, and the Little Explorers defeat North Catholic for the 8th straight time, 12-0, to increase their record to 3-1-0 and remain undefeated in divisional play. | 1966.11.13 | MEEHAN MY INTERCEPTION: At McCarthy Stadium, in the fourth quarter of a scoreless game, Explorer linebacker Kevin Meehan drops back in coverage and picks off a pass by Bishop Egan’s Pancho Micir, returns it, and then laterals to defensive back Bill Cubbin for additional yardage. Though the play did not lead to a score, the good field position eventually allowed La Salle to score the only touchdown of the game with 2 minutes to go, upsetting the high-flying eagles, 6-0, spoiling their perfect season in the “Upset Of The Decade”. | 10 | 9 |
| 1968.10.20 | ZAISS RACES PAST CRUSADERS: At Northeast High School, quarterback Joe Zaiss bootlegs for two long gains against the Crusaders, but the Father Judge offense was way too much for the Little Explorers as they win 54-20, dropping La Salle’s record to 2-3-1. | 23 | 4 |

| 1970.11.06 | DEENEY PUTS KNIGHTS TO SLEEP: At Roosevelt Stadium, in the fourth quarter of a tight defensive struggle, quarterback John Maher looks right, and then passes left to John Deeney in the flat, and Deeney races 50 yards to the left pylon for the only score of the game, as La Salle defeats Bishop Kenrick, 6-0, for only their second win against six losses. | 1973.09.23 | CASSIDY-UZELAC PRELUDE: At McCarthy Stadium, La Salle starts a 4th quarter comeback against the Vikings, as Mike Cassidy hits Pete Uzelac for a 3 yard TD, and holder Bill Tamasitis tosses to Mark DeSimone for two points. | 1975.10.26 | NO DOUBTING TAMASITIS: La Salle had trailed Cardinal Dougherty, led by the great running back Lawrence Reid, at half, 19-6. But Reid was injured near halftime, and the Explorers had come back to trail by six points at 19-13 as the fourth quarter unfolded. The Cardinals punted, and John Tamasitis caught the ball on his own 15, and raced 85 yards for the game tying touchdown. John Walsh’s extra point, and a rejuvenated defense, gave the Explorers a surprise 20-19 win over Dougherty. | 1 | 6 |
| 1975.10.26 | EXPLORERS DECK CARDS, 20-19; JOHN WALSH'S PAT IN 4TH QUARTER WINS IT: John Walsh kicks the deciding extra point as La Salle comes back from a 19-6 deficit to defeat Lawrence Reid and Cardinal Dougherty, 20-19. | 11 | 2 |
