the 2017-18 season . . . Plus some Tedbits.

SPECIAL NOTE
To all scorekeepers: PLEASE try to make sure that correct info on scoring is called into the Score Service -- 215-854-4570. Generally, it's better when the winning team calls in the results. That way the papers receive info to explain HOW the game was won because representatives of the winning team will usually be in a better mood (just human nature) to provide extra details such as rebounds, assists, etc., or the identity of someone who maybe hit a winning shot. Thank you.

  Matt Griffin
made history Monday night as his Roman Catholic Cahillites edged Bonner-Prendergast, 51-49, to win the Catholic League championship. This is Matt's second year in charge. In CL history, 25 titles have been won by coaches in their first or second year at a school. Bill "Speedy" Morris, who coached Matt at the Prep, was the last to do so in '03. Matt was not on that team, but his brother was (John). Speedy also won the championship in season No. 2 of his first go-'round at Roman. John "Jocko" McGarry also pulled off the feat at two schools, West Catholic and Southeast Catholic (a k a South Catholic). In '62, Rev. James Donahoe took over when Ed "Dutch" Doyle needed to step aside due to illness. The CL's first season was 1919-20.

Last night was the 17th time in Catholic League basketball history that the championship was decided by no more than two points. Thanks to Hakim Hart's layup with 1.6 seconds left on a pass from Lynn Greer, Roman is now 2-2 in these classics. Below are the scores and a pertinent nugget for the 17 games. Take note: In 1937, a best-of-three series decided the title. La Salle won Game 3 by four points, 29-25. By the way, Lynn Greers are 2-1 in league championship games. In 1969, Senior was a rotation guy for Edison's Public League champs. He had one point and three rebounds in a 69-67 win over Southern (then had 12 points and seven rebounds as the Inventors beat Roman, 57-54, for the City Title). Junior, the Daily News City Player of the Year, had 19 points and four assists as Engineering and Science fell to Gratz, 68-46, in the '97 Pub final. III, only a soph, had 12 points and four assists in last night's 51-49 win over Bonner-Prendergast.

Time to take a guess . . . Here are your picks for the winner and final score in tonight's Catholic League final -- Bonner-Prendie vs. Roman -- at the Palestra. This is the first batch. Other guesses must be received by 8 p.m. Thanks to all participants. A note about one guesser: Tom Kehoe has working ties to all four teams that'll be playing tonight. The teams in the girls game will be O'Hara and Neumann-Goretti. He teaches at the first and formerly taught at the other. He also worked at B-P and Roman. At those schools he was the disciplinarian and athletic director, respectively. . . The Wife picked Roman because her mother, Mary, graduated from Hallahan, Roman's sister school. and many family members attended both.
UPDATED with picks received by 8. The polls are closed. Thanks to all participants!

Tomorrow night, one of the combatants in the Catholic League final (against Roman) will be a team from the suburbs, Bonner-Prendergast (Drexel Hill). Then known as Monsignor Bonner, it became the CL's first suburban champ in 1960. Over the 58 seasons from '60 through '17, "Burbs Boys" won 10 championships and Bonner led the way with four. The Friars were also the only squad to win two in a row -- current coach Jack Concannon was a star forward for the '83 kingpins -- and now there's a chance BBs will again capture two in a row since Archbishop Wood was the '17 winner. La Salle was new to the BB club in '63, having moved to Wyndmoor from the college campus at 20th & Olney. Tom Ingelsby, Carroll's coach in '95, was a star guard (as a junior) for O'Hara's '68 champs.

The 2018 Catholic League championship will be decided Monday night at the Palestra as Bonner-Prendergast meets Roman Catholic. So far, 83 championship games have been played (counting three "extras" that were part of best-of-three series in 1937 and 1939) and Roman leads in wins with 22. B-P owns four, all from its just-Bonner era. Records for championship games are on the left. Records for quarterfinals/semifinals/finals are on the right.

The final week of January in 1964 was an all-timer for a Southwest Philly kid named Frank Kunze. Up until the mid-1960s, Public high schools had TWO classes in each grade. Frank, a basketball player, graduated from John Bartram on Jan. 27. The next day, he played for the Braves against Frankford in a regular season game and, in his first start of the season, scored 52 points by shooting 22-for-40 and 8-for-12. He was on the floor for all but the final 1:18. Kunze had started as a soph and junior, but coach Tony Coma brought Frank off the bench in that 1963-64 season because he'd be a mid-year graduate. The start and chance to rack up as many as 52 points was Coma's way to thank Kunze for the way he handled the situation. OK, now we're up to Jan. 29 and here's what Kunze did . . . Played for Cheyney in a 91-77 victory over East Stroudsburg! He scored just two points (on a field goal) while becoming, according to multiple newspaper accounts, just the second white guy to ever play hoops for Cheyney. The first, also in that season, had been Ridley product Al Ross. On Jan. 30, Bartram played Roxborough. By Public League rules, Kunze could have played in that tilt as well! Mid-year grads were eligible through Jan. 31. However, NCAA rules prevented college athletes from continuing to play at the high school level. Kunze went on to have a great career at Cheyney, racking up 1,274 points. He was a co-captain for the Wolves' 1966-67 squad, which was the Division II East Regional champ. He then played briefly in the Eastern Professional Basketball League.

Quite the contrast in last night's Catholic League semifinals at the Palestra. Bonner-Prendergast (nee Bonner) claimed a postseason win over Carroll for the first time while Roman upped its record vs. St. Joseph's Prep to 9-3 and bested the Hawks for the third consecutive season. B-P coach Jack Concannon was also Bonner's boss for those setbacks in '93 and '95; that was his first coaching go-'round with the Friars. Between Roman and Prep, Speedy Morris is now 5-4 in that series.

This kid rules!! . . . Jason Smith, the winner of the Take a Guess contest for the CL semis, is 12 years old. And he's the grandson of the second-place finisher, Jim Smith, who's likely THE most devoted B-P fan, ever. Jason's in the sixth grade at St. Dorothy School, in Drexel Hill. He attended the games with grandpop and another legend, John "Lefty/Blade" McCauley. Congrats, Jason!

Take a guess . . . Here are your picks for the winners -- and combined margin of victory -- for tonight's Catholic League semifinals at the Palestra. Guesses must be received by 6:15 p.m. Ballot box now closed. Thanks to all participants! Judge assistant Fran Hennessey thinks both games will require four overtimes and be decided by just one point (smile).

In this century. lower seeds have claimed victory 13 times in Catholic League quarterfinals. The most recent upset occurred Friday night and was quite notable because it prevented Neumann-Goretti from advancing to the semis for the first time since 2008. The Saints were bested by St. Joseph's Prep, 54-40, and, yes, the game was played in N-G's gym. Strange goings-on: The Prep went scoreless for 7:27 and N-G did so for 10:05.

PAISAA TOURNEY QUARTERFINAL
Haverford School 66, Penn Charter 46

PC's 2017-18 season is in the books. Was it terrific? Hardly. Was it decent enough to create nice memories? Let's go with that. The Quakers finished 17-11 overall and they hadn't claimed that many wins since going 18-11 in 2005-06. On the ouch side, they went 3-6 over the last nine games and were unable to finish at least .500 in the Inter-Ac League (4-6). PC lost twice to HS in the regular season and a road win today against this opponent would have qualified as a significant upset. A mid-range jumper by sr. WG Mason Williams brought PC within 10-7 with 3:29 remaining in the first quarter, but the Fords mostly rolled from there and the first eight minutes ended at 21-11. The second stanza was basically even. There was a hint of light for PC with about three minutes left in the third as the lead was whittled down to eight, at 40-32. Nah, it didn't go down to six or five. It ballooned. Shortly before the buzzer, sub sr. G TJ Malone, a lefty, drained a right-wing trey to make it 48-32. There was one last play of note in that quarter. With two-tenths of a second remaining, sr. WG-SF Will Samuel inbounded from the right baseline. There was no time to catch/shoot, of course, so soph WG-SF Ryan "Pooch" Holmes did a great job of semi-catch/simultaneously-guide and he successfully nailed a bank shot. The ref ruled . . . no good. Oh, baby. My pic from the far end showed the ball in Pooch's hand with no time yet off the clock. Wonder if anyone shot video? HS made the lead 21 points, at 56-35, on a trey by star sr. G Kharon Randolph with 6:34 left. To that juncture the Fords were 10-for-15 in the second half. Williams (19) and Samuel (14) scored in double figures and the latter claimed 10 rebounds. Jr. G Gavin Burke topped HS with 20 points while Randolph managed 19. Against I-A schools, Burke had his three highest scoring games vs. PC -- 14, 14 and 20. He totaled 33 vs. all others. With 1:52 left, PC coach Jim "Flipper" Phillips made sure his lineup included all five seniors -- Williams, Samuel, PF Ryan Dickson, G Jake Nicastro and deep sub F Christopher "Floater" Thomas. The first four departed at 1:13 and Floater was allowed to finish since he hadn't played earlier. Williams finished his season with 526 points (18.8 PPG) and his career with 1,204. That number ranks sixth in school history. Thanks for an enjoyable season, guys, and good luck to all seniors going forward. Note to underclassmen: Put in lots of off-season work. Plenty of playing time will be available next season.

The questions began peppering the cell phone as last night's interesting Catholic League quarterfinals wound down. Lots of Tedbit inspiration (ha ha). One question came from Dan DiBerardinis, Roman's good-guy athletic director. He was wondering how often teams meet for the championship one year, then don't advance as far as the semis the next. In fact, he was guessing this might have been a first. Ah, these young bucks. So much they need to learn (smile). I can see why Dan, a 2005 Roman grad (and player), had that thought, though, because Roman and Neumann-Goretti (nee Neumann) have been dominant programs for a good while. Plus, he wasn't too far off with regard to modern times. This is the first time since 2008 that both previous year's finalists have not advanced to at least the semis. There was also a 10-year gap before that and a nine-year gap before that. This list goes back to 1968, the first year for quarterfinals. There have been 10 instances and five occurred over the first 15 seasons. Fourteen of the teams lost in quarterrs. One fell in a pre-playoff. Five did not make the playoffs (X used for that).

Exactly 50 years ago today (it was even a Friday), all front-row spectators at Bartram wound up being treated for windburn. Just kidding . . . I think. The final score in a game that completed the Public League regular season was Bartram 158, Simon Gratz 89. Yes, the Braves exploded for 158 points (4.9 per minute) and this was two decades prior to the debut of the three-point shot. At the time, 158 and 247 were state records for one/two teams in the same game. Not sure about now, but I know of at least one higher combo total. In 1998, also in the Pub, George Washington outlasted West Philadelphia, 130-127, in four overtimes. In this 1968 game, Mike Moore led Bartram with 57 points thanks to 21-for-34 shooting from the floor and 15-for-16 at the line. He also claimed 21 rebounds. In all the Braves shot 64-for-101 and 30-for-43. Also, they scored 51 points in the fourth quarter (6.4 per minute). Outrageous! Marv Frazier (30) and Ernie Strange (18) also had high totals. Bartram coach Jack Farrell said of the outcome, "It wasn't a deliberate thing to roll up a score like that. When Mike got into the 40s, we called time and the kids decided to do it on their own. I'm real happy for him." The boxscore accompanies this Tedbit. Be advised, there are some typos. Imagine being a Gratz player. You get home from school and Mom asks, "How'd the game go?" . . . "We scored 89 points." . . . "Wow, that's great!" . . . "But we lost by 69."

This year, for the first time, three Catholic League teams are being coached by African-Americans. And last night, Cardinal O'Hara's Jason Harrigan became the first of those three men to claim a CL playoff win. On the road, the Lions bested Archbishop Ryan, 58-47, for their first playoff win since 2012 as sr. G Antwuan Butler scored 24 points (all in the second half). Butler is a transfer from now-closed Delaware Valley Charter and Harrigan was his coach there before taking the O'Hara reins for the 2016-17 season. Also yesterday, McDevitt, coached by Will Chavis and likewise involved in a road game, gave St. Joseph's Prep a scare before falling, 57-51. Next up will be Bryan Caver. Tonight at 7 at La Salle, he'll lead Conwell-Egan vs. Lansdale Catholic in a game to decide the CL's rep for the upcoming 4A City Title.
UPDATE: Conwell-Egan won, 65-57, so Bryan Caver now owns a win as well. Patrick Robinson scored 24 points, thus reaching 1,000 for his career.

PAISAA TOURNAMENT, FIRST ROUND
Penn Charter 63, Friends' Central 55

Anyone have a friend who knows somebody who works for Guinness World Records? Boy, do I have an entry for that organization! Here we go . . . Fewest Field Goals Attempted in the Second Half by Someone Who Scored 24 Points in the First Half -- 1, Mason Williams, Penn Charter, 2018 vs. Friends' Central. (With injury/sickness/foul trouble not part of the equation.) . . . Hard to believe, right? In the first half, the sr. WG sniped 9-for-11 from the floor and 6-for-8 on three-pointers for those 24 points as the host Quakers built a 33-21 lead.. He was on full-blown fire. He drained five of those treys in the first 12:10. In the second half, Williams was guarded very well by Edward Holland. The kid never left Mason's front or sides or back or anything and since PC was still doing reasonably well, there was no need to force things. Williams did try three FGs beyond intermission. But he was fouled on two of those attempts and since the ball did not go through the rim/net, those attempts did not count. (He hit three straight free throws after being hacked on a trey attempt from the left corner and the first of two after being clobbered on a follow.) His one actual attempt was a dunk with 1:22 remaining in the game. That was set up sub jr. F Ryan "Zingy" Maloney, who made a steal at about three-quarters court. Williams raced to the other end, Maloney pinpointed him perfectly along the way with a pass and Mason pogo-sticked up for the uncontested jam. In all he scored 30 points while shooting 10-for-12 from the floor (6-for-8 on treys) and 4-for-6 at the line. OK, are you ready for Nutty Nugget No. 2? Sr. SF Will Samuel scored 19 points and . . . owned NONE at halftime. He took just two shots prior to intermission. He scored PC's first seven points of the third quarter and frolicked from there. In all, he shot 6-for-11 (2-for-4) and 5-for-6. Meanwhile, the coolest play of the night featured sub jr. G Dylan Topaz, who made an acrobatic leap for a steal, then added a spin en route to a driving layup. Who says golfers aren't athletes!? (smile) Soph WG Ryan "Pooch" Holmes spent his night turning into Mr. Floor General with six assists and Maloney had eight of his nine rebounds in the first half. F Josh Friday, a gangly lefty, made sure FC hung around by scoring 16 of his 18 points in the second half. By the way, Friday's uniform number is 13. Wonder how he'd play on Friday the 13th? Wing sniper BK Kothari mad-bombed his way to 12 points by nailing four treys. PC's quarterfinal opponent (details TBA) will be the winner of tomorrow's Haverford School-Solebury game.
NUGGETS: In the opening game of the doubleheader, PC's girls also defeated Friends' Central . . . PC teacher John Burkhart handled PA duties for both tilts. He announced that one of the refs for the boys game was John Prez. "Prez" is his nickname. He's former Dougherty sniper John Przybylinski . . . Did you know? Keith Holmes, Pooch's dad, scored a goal on a head ball as Ryan topped Carroll, 4-0, to win the Catholic League soccer championship in 1981.

Bonner-Prendie jr. PG Isaiah Wong last night finished first in voting for the Coaches' All-Catholic Basketball Team and thus earned MVP honors. Going back to 1965, when the league first picked A-C honorees by division, Wong is the 15th underclass MVP. As you likely know by now, Wong is a first-year CL player. He transferred into B-P from Notre Dame in Lawrenceville, NJ. Other first-year CLers on the list below are O'Hara's Adonal Foyle in '92 and Dougherty's Kyle Lowry in '03. Foyle came from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, a Caribbean nation, and only stayed one year before transferring to a school in upstate New York. He played college ball at Colgate and then spent 12 years in the NBA. Lowry popped up at Dougherty as a transfer from Northeast. He played at Villanova and is still going strong in his 12th NBA season.

For the first time since 1988, and 11th time total, Monsignor Bonner/Bonner-Prendergast has finished with the best record in its division. (These days, of course, the Catholic League is all one "division.") In 1964, '66 and '67, the Friars ended up in a tie for best-record honors. They lost a coin flip in '64, then lost/won pre-playoffs to decide the top spot in '66 and '67, respectively. This year they finished in a 12-1 deadlock with Neumann-Goretti and go into the playoffs as the No. 1 seed because of the head-to-head result with N-G. The Friars also won the championship in '83. That year they finished second in the Southern Division. A star senior forward on that team was Jack Concannon. Yes, he's the coach of this year's team.

For the second consecutive season, at least two guys have finished with averages of at least 22 points in Catholic League regular season play. Conwell-Egan's Patrick Robinson, a senior (and lefty), averaged 23.5 and Bonner-Prendie junior Isaiah Wong averaged 22.0. This makes two consecutive seasons with "Two 22s" along with three in the last five. There was a three-season run from '98 to '00. . . Oh, one last thing. Wood plays Carroll tonight in the final regular season game. The Vikings' Andrew Funk owns 231 points through 12 games for a 19.2 average. If he drops a 55-point bomb tonight, we will gladly add him to the list (smile).

Under third-year coach Bernie Rogers, Haverford School last night defeated Penn Charter, 79-66, to become the 10th Inter-Ac team in this century (just the third over the last 12 seasons) to finish with a perfect record at 10-0. The Fords won their games by a rounded-off average score of 71-53. Just once did an opponent come within 10 points; Malvern the first time around at 62-57. This century's other 10-0s: Germantown Academy in '00, '01, '02 and '13; Penn Charter in '03 and '04; Episcopal in '05 and '06; Chestnut Hill in '10. This is the Fords' fourth perfect I-A season -- 10-0 in '25 and '27, and 7-0 in '37.

INTER-AC LEAGUE
Haverford School 79, Penn Charter 66

If only PC had scored two more points in a specific part of the game -- just TWO more -- the entire night might have wound up differently . . . OK, probably not. But we can dream, right? A three-pointer by sr. WG Mason Williams on a feed from sr. PG Jake Nicastro drew the Quakers within 24-23 in the latter portion of the second quarter. And there they stayed, stuck on 23 up to intermission and then for the first 65 seconds of the third quarter. If PC had taken the lead against the Fords, who were shooting for a perfect Inter-Ac season at 10-0, maybe the confidence level at least semi-soars, maybe the student fans stand up and form an actual rooting section, maybe the Fords begin to experience at least a hint of the jitters, maybe the Quakers forge ahead to lead by six-eight points heading into halftime. Oh, well. Can't have everything. Recently, couldn't even have many Inter-Ac wins. After starting league play at 3-1, PC sagged to a 4-6 finish and since four starters will be graduating it's tough to predict what will happen in the 2018-19 season. Before halftime, HS got a right corner trey from sr. PG Kharon Randolph, a loose ball/opportunity bucket by jr. SF-WG Christian Ray and another FG by Ray on a follow. That made the score 33-23. The second half started with regular baskets by Randolph and frosh WG Christian Clover, which sandwiched a left-corner trey by Clover. That quickly, the score was 40-23 and the deep sighs released by PC faithful were numerous. To that point HS owned a shooting percentage of 66.7 (10-for-15) in the second and third quarters. Overall, Ray wound up shooting 10-for-14 en route to 22 points. He was a very savvy kid around the cup and is the definition of no-muss, no-fuss. He farts around (or passes gas, if you prefer -- smile) with the ball not at ALL and matches quick hands with springy feet. Randolph (15 points) missed his first three shots, then just two thereafter. He pretty much had his way on drives. Clover, like many (all?) lefties, loves to take his mail on the left side of the court. He had 16 points and went 3-for-5 on treys. Jr. G Gavin Burke (14) missed NO treys, going 3-for-3 with classic lift/arc on his shots. Jr. PF-C Asim Richards bulled around inside. PC started its five seniors -- the usual four plus deep sub Christopher "Floater" Thomas. Floater departed with 4:38 in the first quarter and he owned a plus-three since PC was ahead, 8-5. He also dished an assist, but his season's shooting percentage dipped to 83.3 (on 5-for-6) because he missed his only shot, a left corner triple. Williams sniped 5-for-7 from behind the arc and notched 22 points. Nicastro had six points, two assists. WG-SF Will Samuel had 14 points and seven boards. PF Ryan Dickson had two assists and set ever-forceful picks. Jr. F Ryan "Zingy" Maloney paced the subs with 11 points while shooting 3-for-4 (one trey) and 4-for-4. The visit began in the Graham Athletic Center as the wrestling squad topped Episcopal in a very rare appearance in that building. It was a fun experience and congrats to all who made it happen -- athletic department whirlwinds John Thiel, Ed Foley, Gerry Sasse, coach Pete Shaifer, etc. "Shaif" remembered being part of a GAC meet (also vs. Episcopal) as a PC senior in 1982 . . . The arrival inside the Dooney Field House was highlighted by getting to see HS assistant Jazz Williams, who was entering the building at the same time (with his daughter). Jazz starred at West Catholic and later coached the Burrs.
NUGGETS: PC will host Friends' Central Wednesday in the first round of the PAISAA Tournament . . . Good to see former Dobbins star Marvin Stinson, whose son, Jaylen, a frosh, is a rotation sub for HS . . . Ditto for former La Salle star Terry Burke. Gavin is his son and so is Scott, a soph JV player who dresses varsity . . . Randolph is headed to the University of the Sciences. Ex-Carroll star Jordan Ingram, an assistant at USci, was on hand to watch Kharon do his thing . . . One more visiting dignitary: Rich Miller. Among other duties, he coached Judge in 2000 when Bill Fox was taking a break.

In his third season, coach Bernie Rogers has steered Haverford School to its first Inter-Ac League championship since 1999. It's an outright crown and the Ford will finish with a perfect mark (10-0) if they win tonight at Penn Charter. The I-A started in 1924 and 29 coaches have won first championships by their third season at that school. The list is below. Thirteen firsts. Ten seconds. Six thirds. As you check out the names, you'll see that lots of great men are included.
UPDATE: The Fords indeed finished 10-0.
