Markward Club

Everyone connected with the Markward Club, and Philadelphia basketball in general, continues to cherish memories of George Paull, Andy Dougherty and John "Tex" Flannery. George, who died Dec. 9, 2002, at age 57, was the Club secretary and a star player at Dougherty and La Salle College, then later a coach at Ryan. Andy, who died Oct. 4, 2005, at age 79, was the secretary prior to George and lit up each and every luncheon with his sense of humor and amazing memory. In his younger years, Andy would move from table to table to do some ground work and later introduce every single person in attendance! Without having written down any name! Tex, who died Nov. 4, 2007, at age 85, was the club's president emeritus (and president before that, of course) and used his humor, with a focus on mixed metaphors ("it's all water under the dam") to entertain luncheon goers. He was also La Salle High's FB coach for 29 seasons (and Bartram's for four before that) and went 166-132-12 overall with three Catholic and two City titles.

The Markward Memorial Basketball Club, named after the legendary former Roman Catholic High coach, William "Billy" Markward, meets most Wednesdays from early December to mid-March to honor players in the Public League, Catholic League and Inter-Ac League (along with others, more than ever, for reasons that remain mysterious, and have people scratching their heads -- smile).

Luncheons begin at 12:30 p.m., cost $16 (includes tax and gratuity) and are held at The Valley View Inn, on Domino Lane, off Ridge Ave., in Roxborough.
